  • Maybe the driver was a bit foggy about the meaning of the 11' 8" clearance sign, or the significance of the "OVERHEIGHT - MUST TURN" flashing signal? I don't know, but he floored it and hit the bridge with his rental truck this morning.

I went to their website. *There's no way to find out the truck clearance heights on the Penske website.* They'll tell you the internal storage capacity, but not what @#$%ing bridges it'll get stuck under. It's like they actually WANT such accidents to occur, because they sure avoid giving potential customers the information they'd need to avoid them.
Supposedly the contract you sign tells you that you're responsible for any overheight collisions, but having seen how assiduously the website avoids telling you this information, I suspect the contract is also suspiciously void of what the height limit is for the particular vehicle you're renting.

Lon.TV they do and normally they run the light. The light is programmed to turn the light red when it detects an overheight car so the driver has plenty of time to decide whether to tempt fate or turn and not be a dumb ass. It didn't turn red when he pulled up immediately because he was 5 cars down and it already turned red, so he had plenty of time to react.

Exactly, a lot of them speed up to get through the light and end up hitting harder.
Here is one that speed up to run the red light and the whole length of the roof ripped off: czcams.com/video/I0BJmC6u7MU/video.html

@Jake Logan It's the same rental company too. They're going to be getting used to replacing their trucks often pretty soon.

It already turns red, stays red extra long, and turns the sign on, but I agree that "OVERHEIGHT MUST TURN" is vague and could be ignored by someone who doesn't realize that their truck is overheight for that bridge, especially since the reason this bridge is famous is that it catches trucks that aren't overheight for most other bridges.
Something like "YOU ARE OVERHEIGHT AND MUST TURN" might help. Or a plastic bar hanging on chains before the canopener, so that they non-destructively hit it and realize that they will definitely hit the bridge.

Sign overload. Too many bogus signs = they fade into the background of irrelevance.

Penske trucks always have the best crashes...and they will never defeat the bridge!

As far as I can see there are very few reasons why he did that. 1 he's blind, 2 he can't read, 3 he's drunk, 4 he's on some kind of mind altering drug, 5 he's on his mobile phone, 6 he's stupid. I favour number 6!

Watched this again today. The sound of the box ripping and snapping against the canopener as the truck backs up, is even better than the sound of the truck hitting the bridge in the first place.
