Would be helpful if you said how much water needs to be flushed through before use

The factory filters are not consistent. The original leaked like a sieve. I called service and he took the whole housing apart, found nothing and told me to get another filter. The replacement I got from Kitchenaid leaked, too. Then I found that neither was fully seated. The last few degrees of rotation took a lot of force and the leaks stopped. The next two factory filters went in easily with no extra force required. The last one would not supply water until I removed and reseated it a couple of times. Consumers Report found that most after market filters do not filter as well or meet NIOSH 42, 53, and 401 to varying degrees. That means I am stuck with these flakey over priced filters to achieve best filtering.

That is NOT the end of installation of the water filter. Installation includes flushing 4 gallons of water through the filter before it can be used. Very bad to omit this step and tell you you're done.

There are no black rings on my brand new just opened filter and once I install it the "replace filter" light is still flashing at me.

What do you do if it is stuck??

Mine is stuck too. It appears that one of the channels that is used to unscrew the old filter is notched and is not allowing the old filter to unscrew. I'm weary about forcing to unscrew the old filter with channel locks or other tools because I might break something. Any ideas?

Apparently after some deeper googling and a willingness to 'get it done, or else' we found that if the water is turned on somewhere else in the house and a pair of pliers are used to twist it, the filter does come loose as "depicted" in the video above

I had no problem getting it in and out but I had water all over the place. The Kitchenaid service guy showed up with no filter and could not get my #2 filter to seal in my brand new fridge, either. He pulled the whole top of the fridge down and found nothing and flooded the fridge and kitchen a couple of more times. He wanted me to buy a $50 filter for a brand new fridge. After going around with Kitchenaid, they finally sent a new filter. It still leaked. Then I found the problem. When you rotate the filter into place and it appears to have gone all the way, you might not be there yet. With extra force it click locks at the end of rotation. Make sure you feel it lock. Even the old filter worked when properly installed. Pathetic that the nasty factory repair guy can't install a filter. When I told Kitchenaid of the potential problem, in hopes of helping others in the future, they tried to sell me an extended warranty. Fat chance.
