What did you think of the episode?
Eee...
Not gonna watch this series, sorry...
Had to watch it like 3 times .... but still interested to see Winston's ascension and get back. Who's John Wick's pappy... and all that :D My first hunch is Frankie but that's if he got one off before he was unalived. :D So my guess is Franky is the Pappy or Winston is maybe the pappy if Yen falls for him or Yen goes back for little baby that she was protecting from crack head room or whatever that lady was. Couldn't tell if she got shot. Also curious to see how John got Charlie's car.
@@darknesswithin0 Not even to decide for yourself if its for you or not? Shame
I am leaving this comment for your mom!
Loved it
Prediction: Frankie’s wife is pregnant. Winston promises to take care of her. She gives birth to John but is killed. Winston now connected to the universe gives John to the Ruska Roma to be taken care of, and trained. This is why Winston has such a soft spot for John, his nephew.
Good take
ofcourse! Keanu is part whaisian
Great prediction. I'm still gonna watch even though I believe that's what's going to happen lol.
Wiki states John was born in 1964.. Dunno how true that is tho
@@AaronSGames1unlikely dude. Wouldn’t make sense. John isn’t 60 doing this shit.
Franky and Yen are John Wicks parents hence Winston’s affection towards John, he’s his uncle.
Yes, I called that too. Everything checks out with heritage , based on Keanue, he’s a mutt mix of everything. But Chinese. And native and white , check. Well the lady Vietnamese but still …
But he wasn't of Russian descent? John was born Jardani Jovonovich in Padhorje, a village in the Byelorussian SSR of the Soviet Union, on September 2, 1974 and the series supposedly takes place in the late 70s
@@ghostskull3815 mother probably pregnant, gonna flee and hide in SSR. Show takes places in the 1970’s . So it’s very open to possible. John bio says he was taken in as an orphan by John’s fathers friend , Winston or Uncle Winston
I said the same thing. John even says "yeah" just like Frankie
Darn it, only if I watched it 12 more earlier, was gonna say Winston is John's uncle
First episode was pure perfection! Cant believe some critics called it boring....
Loved this episode so far!! I was hoping you were going to cover this. Wow, can’t believe I caught one not mentioned, but Winston runs into the someone saying “I’m walking here!” Aka Midnight Cowboy. Just went and verified … it’s at 0:55:49 when Winston realizes where his brother is and squeals a u turn. The guy saying it is in a cowboy hat and barn coat and raises his hands when he says it
I'm so glad the episode was over an hour! I hope the next 2 episodes are of a similar length. As much as I love the action, more world building is also very welcome, the scene where the police woman went into the hotel was incredible, as soon as she pulled out the money I got goosebumps and can't wait to see what happens with her character now.
They will be
Great scene. I was actually scared for her.
I don't know if anyone else has said it already, but at 2:50 Frankie didn't 'steal' that bottle of champagne, he noticed and picked up an empty bottle and handed it off to a guy to have it refilled/replaced. He even shook it to double check that it was completely gone, he's playing the role of being 'responsible' and taking care of the patrons during the party.
Fantastic opening episode. Excellent little spin-off, cool characters, Love the first episode I always like Winston and it's cool that we get to see his life. This was an action packed, none stop! Looking forward for the next episode. Highly recommend this series!
Every minute was just wild man. The kitchen scene down to the hall way scene every at the very beginning.
loved this episode and excited for the two other episodes. john wick not being in it BECAUSE ITS A DAMN PREQUEL isn’t a valid reason for people to hate it
Saw the 1st episode last night and all I have to say is AWESOME! Especially seeing a young Winston and Charon. Loved it and went more 😊
was so happy to see this show got a breakdown! love all the other videos and was hoping this would come
I was cautiously optimistic when they announced this, but after seeing ep. 1, I'm sold.
Great video and totally dug The Continental! Can't wait for part 2 to drop! 🔥
For a first episode of show, it was DYN-O-MITE! From the opening credit to the last, plus the kick ass songs they played , it was a hit for me. Also, we had a glimpse of the making of the ballistic kevlar suit we saw in John Wick 4. Dunno if you guys mentioned that :S
I totally enjoyed this episode. Thanks for the breakdown and the stuff about "Be Seeing You." I never realized this was carried through all the movies. So cool!
Uncle Charlie, played by the great Peter Greene, is the same character played by David Patrick Kelly in the John Wick movies, the bodies disposer 😁
I absolutely loved it, it had full of action and incredible world building. I look forward to seeing how it all plays out. Bring on Episode 2
Frankie is JW's father which is why Winston looks out for him.
Yeah the fighting style, the mom is Asian. Keanue is part Chinese , native and white .
Mix of a lot
No. John was born in 1964. The Continental takes place in the 1970s.
@@Yamas258wrong wong
Omg I was so scared to watch this review of yours because I loved the first episode of the Continental
It would have broken my heart if you had been critical of it like I’ve seen all over CZcams so thank you for a brilliant review on this series!!!
Another great video and Doug in his bullet proof John Wick Suit was EPIC and he is the Boss!! Thanks Ryan and Doug Wick for another fantastic video and explanation of things and all the symbolism and easter egss. Don't mess with Doug Wick!
Appreciate your hard work man
3.30 the horse is also a nod to Bianca Jagger's famous moment riding a horse into studio 54. Studio 54 being an alternate reality space with alternate laws and rules that defined the 1970s. By the way the disco-music selection was dope.
I was about to say...
thank youuu for this reply!
I am really loving it so far. I have read and seen some reviews that don’t like it for a host of reasons but I think those reasons are based on preference for wanting the same look and feel of the movies that we love. However I think if this looked and felt like the movies it would not show how the environment/world pre John was different. Plus I went into this episode seeing how it will fit into a world that the producers are trying to create not how this fits into the John Wick world. Love your video can’t wait for the ones for 2 & 3
Flipping loved it!!! I love the world building and seeing where it all started.
This was a very well done video!
Great job...ENJOYED this as much I did the TV series. Keep up the great work.
I'm glad that I watched your review. I was about to ignore this series. But you made it seem intriguing. I'll let you know..watching ep. 1 now 😁
This show is awesome!!! Super fun watch!!
Now something I been waiting for lol will u do the whole show ?
The first episodes is fantastic love it great start cant wait for more good acting direction, and choreography so far.
been waiting on this all weekend
"Animal Symbology is my Speciality." Greatness!
Excellent details and lore! Keep it up!
This show is awesome!!! Really excellent!!! I loved it !!’
Fantastic breakdown. I'm gonna binge watch all John Wick next weekend.
I think his brothers wife is pregnant... with John. They talked about starting a family. Maybe tey alreay have, Winston always seemed fatherly to John.
I'm a huge fan of John Wick but didn't know that Screen Crush has videos on the movies. I'll have to check them out.
I loved E1 of The Continental! I think Rotten Tomatoes got it all wrong. This video nailed it.
You pointed out the taxi from Taxi Driver (cool!), but I'm pretty sure I heard the line "Hey, I'm walkin' here!" in the background. Dustin Hoffman's words in Midnight Cowboy when he almost gets hit by a taxi.
Is John Franky's son? Winston's nephew? Family?
That’s what I’m thinking.
Also Franky and John both were loving husbands…
You’re right.
Fab review as always. I know it won’t ever happen, but I would LOVE your take on “The Prisoner” (1960’s version) someday…!
*_Breakdown, WELL DONE!!!!_*
Loved this opening episode of The Continental, I can't wait to see the world building they will do beyond this.
Love the show and love your videos! Doug was well dressed! 🍻 and your mom jokes - 🤣🤣🤣. Also…doesn’t Neo say…guns, lots of guns in the Matrix?
This show is gonna Kick Ass😎
I wasn't sure what to expect with this show but I really enjoyed the first episode and want to see more!
I loved it. Can’t wait 4 more…
Great start with amazing action. Dude I always watch ur movies or tv shows breakdown for years, but this time you forgot to mention the legend " charon " may his soul rest in peace 🙏🏾😔
Love it so far, interesting to see the high table,
The helicopter scene is what led me to that Yen and Frankie are John's parents
this is gonna be a great series
Frankie is John's Dad, super obvious. Really good show!!!
🏆 this was the best first episode. When is the next. Can hardly wait.. please
Glad you are covering this series. I’ll be looking forward to future breakdowns!
Lol Doug is now considered a Vato. Yo that Missy Elliot reference was dope! 💪😂
I’m loving this series
Awesome. Finally got to see the history of the world of Wick.
Covering Katie McGrath's jaw should be a criminal offence
But her eyes are amazing and she’s great with acting even with the mask 😨
@@PicekRudly I know I know. There's so much of her I freaking adore. Just listening to her voice and I get all weak
The panic at the disco bit made me laugh more than it should have🤣
Really cool callout to the context of Be Seeing You in “The Prisoner”. Makes a lot of sense as a deep cut Easter egg!
Thank you 🙏🏻
You got me with the your mom joke.. hook line and sinker.. lol
Got the 70's NYC pretty spot on filthy...overall looked great!
4:52 🤣Can’t get enough of it😂
It's very good and detailed
This show is EPIC!!!!! Anybody stating otherwise is just not part of The Hightable.
Factz bro..
I thought this episode, as an opener, was really strong. Can't wait for the next one. Here's a little easter egg for you... the blonde thug in the kilt who works for the Adjudicator is played by Kirk Ward who was also the writer, the show runner and an exec producer!
Thank you! I was wondering who would break it down.
This show is everything.. I love it and the music. Put me on the show
I’m guessing that Frankie is Jon Wick’s dad, with Yen obviously being his mom. That’s why Winston looks out for Jon and it suits Keanu’s biracial look. Seems too perfect not to be true.
No. John was born in 1964. The Continental takes place in the 1970s.
@@ryankwon8785 he’s playing a character he doesn’t have to be his real age
lol
8:39, It also retroactively furthers the point that John is a different breed of menace among other the various menaces in this underworld (dog breed reference absolutely intended).
This show had me really thinking about Kingmen last movie. I hope they do the same as well.
I'm calling it Frankie is John's father.
I loved the episode it flushes out the wick- verse like the movies never have more world building in the show
I thought for sure this would be just another cash grab but man was I wrong. It was so good. Can't wait to see what happens next!
watching this like 👀😱🤯
What the fuck?!
i love it so far
The car not only looks like the one from the movie, the license plate is the same "XAB 235"
So John's dad is 100% Frankie. That explains Winston's unnatural proclivity to help John in the movies, He is his family.
Had no idea these episodes were so long, this is incredible! Could have done without ANOTHER Mustang death tho 😭
just before the end of the mayhew interaction, there's a song playing on her radio when she says to "remember to turn it off" which is in russian doll, another series the actor for mayhew was in where he was kind of similar in character

Recap by Tammy AI
nice recap Tammy!
Did you notice in the opening scene where we’re introduced to Cormac, that as Frankie walks away Cormac speaks to his wife asking her “where you been?” Insinuating that she is the wife Frankie was balling.
Ahhhhhhhhh the cuteness!!! Doug in the suit!❤❤❤
Thought it was a bit slow to start - but it had a lot to expand on, I suppose - the music was 100% great - so going to give it another go :)
Ist episode was Hilarious. 🤣🤣 Always get a good laugh from the makers 🤣
I’m going to watch it over. It was hard for me to get into not because I didn’t like it but because I just didn’t knw nothing about that universe of it in John Wick. But I watch now that I have a connection to Winston.
The Jesus Saves sign in the episode reminded me of Grand Theft Auto 2, you would always go to the building to save your game !
I find this very pleasantly ironic that The Continental is premiering the same day the WGA strikes end considering that unlike numerous other Hollywood stories, John Wick is actually Derek Kolstad's original concept.
I think Frankie is John's Daddy
Charles is the old guy in charge of the cleaners in John Wick 1. same hat & everything
Peter Greene even talked with the same cadence as David Patrick Kelly 🤣 awesome actor
Nah Charlie would be like 100 years old by then.
@@viclavar9298 it's confirmed, he's the same character
just call it a wrong casting since Peter Greene does looks like a man that is reaching the 60s more than a man in the early 50s
@@NekoHibaCosplay Even if he's early 50s he'd be damn near 100 years old. Horrible casting lol.
also take a look at the number plate on the mustangs, they both are the same in the show and in the john wick movies, same car?
Lou’s dojo is called Burton karate and is located in Chinatown. I might be reaching but this could be a subtle reference to big trouble in little china. Kur Russel’s character is called Jack burton.
Thanks for not spoiling too much from Chapter 4. Also the "guns, lots of guns" is originally from The Matrix, but I'm betting you already knew that.
Will you be doing a Doctor Who review for the new series human and Doug?
Don’t forget the connection that Keanu Reeves also uses that line about guns in the matrix.
You also didn't mention the midnight cowboy reference when the car flips a uturn a guy goes "hey I'm walking here"
It’s hittin for me
The Continental never confirms that Frankie/Yen were John’s parents and I feel it’s a missed opportunity to confirm Winston as John’s uncle. Maybe we can assume Winston respects John because he reminds him of his brother, but John’s origins are still unknown (again a wasted opportunity and making the Continental a one off mini series).
Ryan, what happened to the Easter egg about Charlie? Charlie is the Dinner Reservation clean up guy! We get to see his beginning as a garbage man. He even has the same hat!
With the idea that Frankie and Yen are John's real parents maybe this could build towards a plot in John Wick 4 exploring John and Winstons relationship.
the horse in the beginning is clearly Studio-54 hommage, nothing more, but nothing less, for the continental being very New York-series
