Why Sony's Answer To The MCU Never Stood A Chance

  • Spider-Man is without a doubt one of the most lucrative superheroes ever put to film. With three different franchises, and countless appearances in the MCU, Spider-Man proves to be successful time and time again. Yet, Sony in their attempt to get a Spier-Man Villain Universe off the ground has failed at every turn.

Honestly what we have is fine. It'd be BETTER with Spider-Man so he could spin off from his villainous roots into the Lethal Protector Arc, but as is the duology so far gives us a nice Dark Comedy that makes light of Cosmic Horror while also illustrating the threat of it. It's kinda like MIB or Ghostbusters in that matter.

Morbius should of been more of a horror style rated R film, similar to the 1986 “The Fly” movie. But instead of a teleporter, Morbius is trying to find a cure, and obviously instead of a Fly, it’s a Bat. And similar to The Fly movie, when Morbius gets his powers he tries to control them, but by the end of the movie he become the evil vampire killer, instead of the “anti-hero” we got. Plus the movie could have ended where the final girl blows up his lair (which would be the company’s building where he works) and when the police comes to find his body, it ends up being missing. This would hint that he escaped the explosion AND leave it open to where Morbius would become a Spider-Man villain in the future

I think we'd MOSTLY be happy if Sony's films actually mean something and aren't just cash grabs to capitalize on "Oh, it's a movie about someone who's related to Spider-Man" but rather do something unique like what the 2019 Joker movie did. If they give us something meaningful, I think we'd be okay with Sony still sharing the rights. Thankfully, ITSV and ATSV proves that wrong in the positive side.

    1. A Venom franchise 100% could work and be really good, but by not having Spiderman you cut out a massive chunk of what made the character yo interesting
    2. Even with them reworking the character to work without Peter, they rushed the *heart and soul* of the character:
    *The redemption*
Venom started as a villain, hating Spiderman with a passion, then slowly phasing it out and becoming more of an anti-hero, the Lethal Protector. He was still pretty batshit, but he wasn't harming civilians anymore.
Then Eddie's whole life tumbles down, he realises how bad the symbiote is for him, it abandons him, he develops cancer and he's forced to confront that he really has nothing.
Then he gets a second chance through Anti-Venom and he gives up those powers to save countless people, earning him a small bit of fame and redeemed him in the eyes of a lot of superheroes, even Peter himself.
He then tracks down the Venom suit again, confronts the darkest aspects of himself and becomes a proper hero, partially to set an example for the son he didn't know he had up until that point, but also to prove that he is stronger than his inner demons and his upbringing.
Venom/Eddie is genuinely one of the most well developed characters in Marvel's entire history. But these movies barely scratch the surface and fast forward through a lot of the developement to the point that it barely feels earned.

I feel like this video was more of just "Why morbius failed." because as we see with the box office sales for Venom, neither Venom movies really failed at all. They had pretty great soundtracks (IMO) and I enjoyed both of them, with my only issue being that in some scenes it's kind of hard tos ee what's going on. I don't think it's a surefire thing that the future movies in this verse are going to fail at all. They might, if Sony disrespects the characters like they did with Morbius, but I think it's fine.

'Morbius' doesn't really ruin anything about the character. The problem is that it's a very boring one and there isn't much to do around it. He's a doctor and a vampire. How do you make that interesting? I legit don't see it, not even with Spider-Man in it.

  • @crazypeopleonsunday7864
    @crazypeopleonsunday7864 Před 10 měsíci +2

Actually, I think creating stories around side and minor characters can be more interesting than characters that have been done over and over again for decades. Nothing against Spider-Man, he's one of my favorite superheroes (tied only with Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan)), but with lesser, or virtually un-, known characters you can try something new and build their world for the ground up. Relatively recently I came up with an idea for a Frog-Man... story? I don't know what medium I was thinking it would be for. TV show, comicbook series? Regardless, I was able to unironically think up a whole word based around a joke character, and fill it with plenty of side characters and arch enemies that would explore themes of humility, self-confidence, and redemption. (Hopefully I can bring it to life someday.) My point is just that side characters can make for really good main characters, too, if handled well.

I'm fairly certain making all those solos R-rated and building up to a King in Black crossover could've worked swimmingly.
Just imagine Venom, Carnage, Shriek, Toxin, Morbius, Hunger, Kraven, Rhino, El Muerto, Black Cat (?) and the odd Spider person facing off against Knull.
Obviously, they should've given Carnage his due in Venom 2, not killing him off and keeping his threat level intact.
Not shying away from Morbius actually biting and draining (innocent) people without the "Milo" cop-out would've gone a long way in establishing his villainy before the inevitable antihero turn.
El Muerto might be a supernatural Bane stand-in.

According to Boxoffice Pro, the upcoming superhero team-up movie is currently tracking to earn between $25 million and $35 million in its opening weekend at the box office. If Madame Web does end up launching somewhere in that range, it would mark the lowest opening weekend yet for the SSU franchise. Morbius currently has the worst SSU opening weekend at $39 million, followed by Venom ($80.3 million) and Venom: Let There Be Carnage ($90.1 million). Even if Madame Web comes in on the higher end of its tracking, its opening would still be lower than The Marvels, another female-fronted superhero team-up movie, that opened in November 2023 with $46.1 million.

And the only exposure I had to the character was Spectacular Spider-Man which was so long ago, I don't remember how he was portrayed. But oh my God, that sounds terrible! They're blatantly ripping off Vixen! And she already had her own movie! Sorta. There's this weird thing Warner Bros does where combine all episodes of their animated DC webseries into a movie. And Vixen is one of them. And it's in the Arrowverse! Even though as a Black guy, I don't like that the Arrowverse cast part-Black part-White actresses to play effing Africans (Mari and Amaya), it's still decent. I'd recommend it.

But it's weird to me making movies about villain without their hero.
Venom worked sort of for the first movie, and after that it got pretty bad, Tom Hardy pulls people to see a movie and it works financially but the story is not working as a stand alone or a part of a bigger story in my opinion.
I wonder what they will do in the third movie, and I hope it's just not to say that they did a trilogy for him..

Basically a villain origin story. And the post-credits can show him going after another vigilante as a "challenge" (perhaps teasing the actual Sony-verse Spider-Man that we've never seen instead of trying to introduce MCU Spidey)

If they were piling in the money, I would at least begrudgingly understand it, but they're not. Morbius was a disaster, because no one cares. Kraven will probably be even more of a disaster, because no one cares. • @mangaloveranix8412

Sony used to make the Sony Spider Universe with the release of TASM2 alongside with the lineup similar to MCU Phase 1, including the movie with The Sinister Six, Venom and Carnage, Aunt May and Peggy Carter, Spider-Man 2099, and Miles Morales, but they didn't plan the SSU in the effective way. It was even planned that Andrew Spider-Man will be giving the Spider-Man mantel to Miles while Spider-Man 2099 will be like Captain America from Earth-9200. At the end, there will be a team up with Spider-Man characters, such as Spider-Man, Venom, Spider-Man 2099, and Black Cat maybe, similar to Avengers 1, against Carnage as the main antagonist. It is only Spider-Man infected with Venom into wearing the Symbiotic Suit in such a way he will be enraged over his dead girlfriend's death before Venny drops to Eddie so that symbiote can begin his adventures with Eddie in another film at the meantime.
As far as I want to see the BETTER version of the SSU, the poor reception and low cash for TASM2 at box office demolished this version. What we got aside from that trainwreck are games by Activision with bonus content, such as Carnage and Rhino. That sucks certainly that The Amazing Spider-Man's Earth shows more potential than the Raimiverse movies rather than being a reboot series of movies after the fallout of events between Spider-Man 3 to 4, which was canned with a video gane tie-in for consoles like the Nintendo DS. There's another movie called Spider-Man vs. The Amazing Spider-Man in the works, but that was canned, thanks to the low ratings and expectations of money collected and deposited of TASM2, so Sony went to Marvel Studios to make a reboot series of movies for Spider-Man in the MCU. That sucks donkey balls. What's even worse is the arrival of Kraven in No Way Home buzzing the crap of Spidey was scrapped in favor of Kraven the Hunter because the writers of NWH wanted a solo movie for Kraven instead of adding too much characters like with what Sony did for Raimiverse Spider-Man 3. What's the problematic factor from the SSU to MCU is the deal between Sony and Marvel Studios in which hand a party cannot put a well-known character into the MCU left-out unattended because of copyright issues, which involves with Spider-Man horrendously. Sony still doesn't want to sell Spider-Man to Disney because that web-crawler will make money for them one movie by one movie at the time each year. What's is an quagmire is that the SSU is connected with the MCU on the factor of Spider-Man and other characters Sony attained so far from Marvel away from bankruptcy.
One day, one day, maybe we will see all Spider-Man characters into the MCU. That will be the beastial experience we want to see for a Spider-Man movie. In the post credit scene for NWH, a piece of Venom is crawling on a table at the bar Eddie was in. I believe I want to see MCU Spidey vs. MCU Venom as my suggestion for the next MCU Spidey movie. Spider-Man is yin while Venom yang. We want Spider-Man to grow up so he can get the bigger picture of the world surrounding him will be for the hero like him to be the best there is after all that is immortality through nalenced durality as seen as in one of your videos about the Venom movie series, Nerdstalgic.👍🤩👍
