Honestly, considering Darrin's and Samantha's expected life spans, it's a wonder her parents gave her such a hard time about marrying him. I don't know why Samantha just didn't say, "Mother, Father, don't worry--he'll be gone before you realize it."

Plus Darrin was mostly a pill. Was forever irked about any witch-ly behavior, had zero interest in the witch life or perspective. Samantha's mother Endora is played as a meddler, but she was actually quite fun and far more open minded about human need than Darrin about witch need.

As a child watching the reruns, I never understood why Samantha was so willing to marry a stick-in-the-mud like Darrin. I mean, not use your magic for housekeeping? That's crazy. But, if you consider her long life, Darrin is just going to be a small part of it. She wants to play at being a human, suburban housewife for awhile. It does make you wish the writers had explored her back story some more. Would have been more interesting to see where that desire came from and get more of her family history.

    • @RusTsea196T
      @RusTsea196T Před 3 lety +117

Yep, the eternal Bewitched question: "What does she see in him?" Once you've thought a little it's hard to understand why a woman with so much ability and life experience (300 years) would want to buy in to "the husband is lord and master" more of the time. Granted, the thinking on marriage roles was even worse in earlier times, but with her obvious intelligence and 300 years to think on it, she should certainly have thought of a better way of living for herself. The obvious answer is just that the viewers aren't supposed to think about it that hard.

I think you’re too deep into an older sitcom. That short of deep character analysis is probably something none of the viewers or writers cared about. I do imagine its a bit like Doctor Who (the Doctor). The short lives humans live and how much they make of them represent something the doctor can never have. You wonder “why does this immortal alien that can travel anywhere in time and space” spend so much time with humans. For him it’s because they’re creatures that achieve amazing things given their short lives.
Also (just a random though) she could have actually just fallen in love with him. There’s a serious misconception in that any of us need a “reason” to like or even feel attracted to someone. Its a volatile emotion and can be based on anything or nothing. If these were real people, it would not to be any of our places to ask “why” they are together and what they see in a each other. Because there doesn’t need to be an answer. We don’t need a reason to love someone. Love is inherently an unreasonable and illogical emotion (really all emotions are; similarly people don’t need a reason to be angry).

She's also mentioned knowing Diogenes (~400 BCE), having met Helen of Troy (~1180 BCE) and dating Otze the Iceman (a shaman found frozen in a mountain pass, ~3500 BCE). She's also mentioned that she changed her mind "many times in the last 3,000 years" in a conversation about love and relationships, indicating she's been an adult at least that long. Sam is very nice on a superficial level, but she has been extremely cruel to Darren. By not telling Darren the truth until after they are married, she's trapped him (from his viewpoint of what is right and moral) in a relationship that he really doesn't want to be in. She's using him. She may not think she is using him, but she is. And considering the relationship dynamics, it would appear that the main thing she sees in him is that he's basically non-threatening. I am glad they addressed this in season 2's "What Every Young Man Should Know" when Endora sends them back in time to see what would've happened if Samantha had told him she was a witch while they were still dating instead. That should've "really" happened on an ethical level, of course, but then you wouldn't have the show's main conflicts. What sets it up is Samantha, AFTER they're married, telling Darrin: "Soooo I'm a witch. I have literal magic powers to do anything. I am several centuries old. You're going to get old and die way sooner than me. My relatives all have magic powers too, will hate your guts, and will torture you for the rest of your life. @Doug Winfield I was gonna point that out, however, since "Bewitched" was a b/w show that did shift into color after its 2nd season, we do know what color that exact dress of Endora's was. She wore this iconic dress quite a bit throughout the series (in both the b/w and color episodes). So, even though this was a b/w episode, originally, that's actually irrelevant 'cause they colorized the dress the exact same color it legitimately would prove to be in the later color episodes. So, we know the statement is still correct, she did have the same color palette as Daphne Blake. 😆But, I guess it is worth mentioning that (unlike Daphne), Endora did branch out into other colors and outfits, as well. 😉Though this outfit was clearly her favorite. 😁

EYE OF THE BEHOLDER is a favorite of mine. Endora is the one who put doubts into Darrin's kind. But I love what he tells Sam in the park, that it doesn't matter as long as two people who love one another are meant to be together.
In the sequel episode, SAMANTHA'S OLD MAN, Endora does more than just put the thought of aging into Darrin's mind, she changes him into an old man to let him feel what'll be like to get old BUT, he still has the same mental capacity he has before the change. Here one sees how hard it is for Darrin to adjust to the sudden change.
In this episode, we also find out that Sam will let herself age at the same rate as Darrin does by explaining, "Witches can do anything they want to do." Of courses, after showing Darrin what she means, Endora pops in angry.
These two episodes are two examples that show what BEWITCHED was all about, love and, in many cases, dealing with day-to-day issues, although, sometimes Sam had to deal with an issue her way. 🙂

You have to remember, back in those days, most women expected to be virgin on their first wedding night. Most men expected they'd have to marry to have sex, unless they had an accommodating widow/divorcee friend, or a pay-by-the-hour 'friend'.
When that's your expectation, long engagements aren't exactly a priority.

It's episodes like this that makes BEWITCHED head and shoulders above comedies today, and most of those of its time. But this show was more than just a comedy, it was a story of two people from two different cultures trying to cope in a suspicious world that didn't like their beliefs challenged.
Samantha had to hide who she is for fear of a backlash against her and her family. This is another way of showing what women, people of color and gays were going through back in the 60s, and prior, and even now. Some say that Sam was repressed while Jeannie was a free spirit. Jeannie's uncontrolled nature got Tony, who I thought was the master, into trouble more times than not. Sam was/is more reaoistic. She feared for her family's safety. She stated that more than once, even explaining to Tabitha why they had to keep their secret.
In many ways, BEWITCHED was ahead of its tike. Love this series.

I have thought about this watching these shows. If she lives hundreds of years and hardly ages I have thought how many times was she in love and how many for the lack of names. Just how many husbands did she have . Unless she only dated warlocks before Darren she could have went through ten or more . Wish I could live that long without ending up in a cold and lonely grave for eternity lord help us all.

I think it scared him and made him sad. The idea that Samantha will live practically forever and he only has so much time with her.
Of course being a man in the 60s it probably hurt his ego a bit about the immortality thing as well but more than anything I think that small flicker of fear we all have when thinking about getting older and dying got to him right there

In the rest of the episode, we see that he's worried about her losing interest in him as he ages and fades, and he's worried about her being stuck taking care on invalid, and he's just kind of overwhelmed. There's a scene where he sits in the park watching an elderly couple that are clearly still in love, and you can see him comparing their mortal relationship with his situation, and he's not sure he can cope...or if he _should_ .

Would you want your wife, still young, vital, and strong, so spend her every waking moment caring for you as an invalid? Or hold her back from enjoying her own life? Now granted, with Sam's lifespan that doesn't apply as much, but it's still something to think about. Even in real-world marriages, big age differences can be an issue. I don't oppose them across the board, my own parents had a modestly big age difference and they were happy together, I could tell. But...it _does_ matter. My mother outlived my father by the better part of two decades. (Granted, even with the age difference my father died younger than he should have for health reasons.) I would never tell a couple with a big age difference not to get together just because of it...but I would also not tell them not to think hard about it first, because it does matter.

Not even a thread on the needle Sam can thread without a spell and still deceive Darrin ... it's funny, but it is also sad to see her making a fool of her ... actually many people try to do things like this, cheat, hide, deceive and that never works!! I wonder if it was him deceiving her ... him, breaking promises, lying and manipulating, I think it wasn’t going to be funny.
Not even a thread on the needle Sam can thread without a spell and still deceive Darrin ... it's funny, but it's also sad to see her making a husband of a fool ... in fact many people try to do things like that, cheat, hide, cheat and that never works!! I wonder if it was him deceiving her ... him, breaking promises, lying and manipulating, I think it wasn't going to be funny.
Speaking of respect ... I just forgot that she cheated on him ... I didn't say I was a witch. She did not introduce her mother, father ... in fact, she even hid the marriage from them. And now she wants to shove the whole HER family down his throat, while his parents can't even go to the house ... they rarely go and when they go, the mother is made crazy, just like others. She has already suffered horrors at their hands, because she insists on keeping them close. She CHOOSED to marry a mortal and live among mortals ... he was not the one who went into her world ... she would have to adapt herself ... but she is unable to keep the promise she made to her husband. Women like Sam are like today, who do wrong things and think they should be accepted ... they are not. That is why 50% of legal marriages fail and they are left alone having to work and educate their children. And they complain about double, triple journeys ... the others (a large part) of the other 50% are fake ...
      I'm sorry, but it is.
