      He was like Gellert Grindelwald though the Fantastic Beasts' version of Samantha joined up with Grindelwald in order to be with her no maj (mortal) boyfriend. Bewitched premiered on Sept. 17,1964 and Rapport's Law in the Harry Potter universe was repealed in 1965 right after Bewitched premiered. Bewitched was partially inspired by the 1941 book The Passionate Witch written by Thorne Smith and finished by Norman Matson after Smith's death. Thorne Smith died in 1934 while writing that book, though we could see a character based on him in a future Fantastic Beasts film where he wrote the book for an advertising client who was trying to get his beautiful blonde haired witch girlfriend back. Bewitched is also partially inspired by the play Bell, Book and Candle where the name of the male lead in the British version of the play is Anthony and the name of the spinster aunt is Queenie. Also in the American version of the play there is a line that states that witches gather at the top of the Woolworth building, the location of MACUSA but it was taken out of the movie version of the play.

    It's too bad Darrin didn't know what he was getting himself into before he married Sam. I wonder if Tabitha ever got curious as to why Darrin didn't get along with Maurice and Endora. He should have told her "Well because I'm not a warlock, and they don't believe in mixed marriages, thats why things are complicated". No doubt Tabitha would ask "Well if you and mom love each other why should it matter?". Sometimes I think witches and warlocks can be kind of small minded. Maurice definitely should have been one to learn that not all mortals are bad, once you get to know us of course. I'd definitely stand up to Maurice respectfully and say "Look sir, i don't mean to question your judgement, maybe it doesn't fit your idea of normal but Sam and Darrin being married works great. We mortals aren't so different from you witches and warlocks", i just hope he doesn't blast me

    • @daniels7907
      @daniels7907 Před 4 lety +12

      In fairness, Darrin was just as small-minded. He was so hostile towards magic that he largely expected Samantha to completely cut herself off from her old life (because everyone in it was a witch or warlock). It really came across as him being bothered by the idea of his wife having powers and a life that he didn't and couldn't have.

      It was the same with Tabitha - his attitude was that his daughter should not be 'contaminated' with magic - like a father with a child who has a talent for music deciding that they must never have a music lesson or an instrument to play on. He expected Samantha to accept him and the mortal way of doing everything but could not or would not accept his wife's gifts. One time he thought she had used her powers to create a campaign and he was mad about it. But when it came to changing a flat tyre in the rain on the way to a dinner party it was - hey can you twitch us out of this mess!

    • @daniels7907
      @daniels7907 Před 3 lety +2

      @@martinbennett8752 - It would also prove the same with their son Adam, who initially repressed his magic because his father was constantly denouncing magic as bad. As you point out, Darrin could be hypocritical about it at times, abruptly deciding that magic *should* be used if it would spare Darrin himself a problem that he, as a man of his time, would be expected to handle on his own. For example, in one early episode Samantha was babysitting the warlock child of some friends and Darrin really hammered the no-magic-in-this-house thing until a burglar broke in, at which point he wanted the kid to use his powers to stop the burglar!

    BEWITCHED was/is unique now and then. It was one of the first, if not the first, series to feature two powerful female characters. Yeah, there was THE HONEYMOONERS who had Alice who stood up to Ralph and Lucy, but neither could do what Sam and Endora could do. I recognize that the other two shows are different types of comedies.
    Endora wouldn't take crud off of any mortal and Sam had her limits. Cross that line and one will face a bugged witch. I would say this, Endora has helped Darrin on a couple of occassions.
    This series really put women in lead roles for eight years, right at the beginning of the women's movement.
