Grout removal tool selection is important. We discuss 3 options in
If you're removing a small area of grout, say for a subway tile, a handheld tool will work. The small grout saws in the video are only a few bucks and work well. They do take a bit of effort though. Also, be careful not to scratch the surrounding tile. Furthermore, if your tile is clay based you don't want to nick it as this will reveal the dark clay under the finished edge...not good.
What tool is best for large ares of grout removal? I'd recommend using an oscillating multi-tool. In the video I show you the FEIN MultiTalent. Lately I've been testing this tool and really like it. That said, any multi-tool worth that's a good one will have a grout removal blade.
You'll likely have to buy the grout removal blade separately and they cost $20-$30. But these carbide blades are the best option for removing grout because they work very well.
Again, be careful not to scratch the tile with the multi-tool. And make sure to use a respirator so that you don't inhale all the grout dust. It's also a good idea to use a shop vac with the multi-tool to cut down on the dust.
Check out my video to see the tools in action and to get a few more tips

As an electrician that does strictly remodels this is an absolute essential tool. czcams.com/users/postUgkx0vyBwjtx9GGOuiqUVT2sRoYqmDoNT_RI Being able to precision cut any material with a light weight tool is priceless.I upgraded to this Dewalt 20v from a competitor's 12v. The Dewalt 20v is just as light as the competitor's 12v. I am extremely pleased with the overall performance and battery life of this tool. As far as oscillators go, they just aren't very ergonomic tools. The dewalt oscillators have an offset handle that do make them somewhat more ergonomic than the competitors' oscillators.

This works perfectly. I recently bought the Kobalt multitool and grout blade. I couldn't believe how easy this was compared to manually scraping. I put this job off as long as possible. It was much worse in my mind until I watched the video and tried it. You can do over a foot per minute nice, clean and deep. Ready for new grout. Nicely done and thank you.

You should find an oscillating tool with a stopper attachment. This will save your water proof membrane that is behind your tile. Set your depth to 1/2 or 3/4 the tile thickness.

Thank you for your advice. I was wondering if an oscillating tool would cut too deep, then it cut through the membrane. Now I can have peace of mind using one.

You will cut down to the thickness of the tile+ add a little bit. No harm no foul if you score the backer board, that stuff is really strong.

In the mudroom I have a wooden base board and tile. The guy that worked on the tile grouted the gap between the wooden base board and around the dooar (big gap between entrance and tile) but because its and old house it cracked and sink in some areas. Plus he did not seal it and I have stains all over. What do you recommend to do with that gap, take the grout out and put something else? Do you think I can apply another color, a darker one over the old one?

The silicone wore away and water got underneath and behind the grout. When I press it, it moves a bit so I figure it's time to replace it. What kind of grout removal bit/blade would I use for the larger half inch grout joint? Thanks in advance.

I agree! What is the value of the multi-tool if it is just going to chip the edges of your tile. Now you have to re-tile. You can clearly see the tiles that were chipped by the tool in the video. I wonder if all of the grout attachments would chip the tile like that.
