Grout removal tool selection is important. We discuss 3 options in
If you're removing a small area of grout, say for a subway tile, a handheld tool will work. The small grout saws in the video are only a few bucks and work well. They do take a bit of effort though. Also, be careful not to scratch the surrounding tile. Furthermore, if your tile is clay based you don't want to nick it as this will reveal the dark clay under the finished edge...not good.
What tool is best for large ares of grout removal? I'd recommend using an oscillating multi-tool. In the video I show you the FEIN MultiTalent. Lately I've been testing this tool and really like it. That said, any multi-tool worth that's a good one will have a grout removal blade.
You'll likely have to buy the grout removal blade separately and they cost $20-$30. But these carbide blades are the best option for removing grout because they work very well.
Again, be careful not to scratch the tile with the multi-tool. And make sure to use a respirator so that you don't inhale all the grout dust. It's also a good idea to use a shop vac with the multi-tool to cut down on the dust.

Btw, this is my CYA, I'm not responsible for any tile damage...it's up to you to be responsible and ensure you don't harm yourself or your bathroom. This video is meant to be for entertainment purposes.
As an electrician that does strictly remodels this is an absolute essential tool. czcams.com/users/postUgkx0vyBwjtx9GGOuiqUVT2sRoYqmDoNT_RI Being able to precision cut any material with a light weight tool is priceless.I upgraded to this Dewalt 20v from a competitor's 12v. The Dewalt 20v is just as light as the competitor's 12v. I am extremely pleased with the overall performance and battery life of this tool. As far as oscillators go, they just aren't very ergonomic tools. The dewalt oscillators have an offset handle that do make them somewhat more ergonomic than the competitors' oscillators.
This works perfectly. I recently bought the Kobalt multitool and grout blade. I couldn't believe how easy this was compared to manually scraping. I put this job off as long as possible. It was much worse in my mind until I watched the video and tried it. You can do over a foot per minute nice, clean and deep. Ready for new grout. Nicely done and thank you.
were you just changing the grout color?
You should find an oscillating tool with a stopper attachment. This will save your water proof membrane that is behind your tile. Set your depth to 1/2 or 3/4 the tile thickness.
Thank you for your advice. I was wondering if an oscillating tool would cut too deep, then it cut through the membrane. Now I can have peace of mind using one.
Just a thought. I think I would use the tool turned around, so when your viewing from the top, it's much clearer. Great videos.
He is just recording a video
Good tips, great beard. Feel more confident about tackling a re-grout job at the local scout hut
i am super happy with my Dewalt multi tool, less money than the Fein, and does the job.
Fun fact - The Fein company invented the oscillating multi-tool and that is why some people called the Fein tool
I've never had to remove grout and I hope I never do but good video. Nice to see it done with both methods.
+J Parra thanks, it' can be messy if you do the entire shower surround. Admittedly I'd think about just replacing the tile at that point but sometimes that's too costly
It's one of those things you only ever do once, it's usually easier just to strip the tiles off and start again :)
Martin Nicholls I’m facing a bathroom countertop that needs the grout removed and replaced and I think you’re right. Rip it up and lay new stuff.
Just had to remove grout from huge back porch used an angle Grinder bedside it was going to take forever otherwise still came out clean but dust is no joke
Thank you very much good sir. Just bought corded tool
Would you recommend wetting the tiles line when grout removing from the floor?
Note, you can also install the blade with the straight edge facing out, so that you can get in right next to the wall
Thanks N Blackmore for adding that tip. I've done that before in tight spots and it works great.
Is there a guide attachment for the oscillating tool that will assist in preventing you cutting too deep ?
Dewalt has a depth attachment you can fasten to their tool. I have a corded version and the attachment was included.
thanks for video. blades can be pressed/snapped on without flipping lever to unlock. snap on then flip lever to eject. lever only used for removal.
+lawxr6eBay yes, you're correct
Thanks so much!
Oh my bad what sander to remover hardened mortar on the tile or the full tesseract to removing the mortar for tile to prevent scarring
Great tip...power tool for big job
I dunno. I mean if your really in a financial bind or are extremely powerful adverse, I can see why you would get the hand manual one. But honestly the multi tool option is like 2000x faster and easier
What is best ..multi tool head ?? To remove tile glue grout ...
What options do we have for a bunch tiles that are spaced less than 1/16". I have to do my tub surround and am not looking forward to using a razor knife to get into those narrow spaces!
Thank you
Nice video buddy. really helped me..off course I bought he Dewalt tool :)
Any tip on how to fix floor tiles that turned into partial drums? - No spare tiles (spare tiles cant be sourced either) and only part of some tiles have turned into drums, so wonder if there's a fix to this without actually removing and replacing the tiles?
How deep does one cut? What is the probable backing underneath floor/shower floor versus wall? Maybe I'm overthinking this.
You will cut down to the thickness of the tile+ add a little bit. No harm no foul if you score the backer board, that stuff is really strong.
thanks so much for such a to the point review!
I've used the hand tools, they jump off track and will scratch your tile. That is if you aren't steady with your hands and have arthritis!
Whats the tesseract to
Keep it from scarring the tile.
Can u use the multi-tool to clean out thinset after removing clips in preparation for grouting? Same blade?
Thanks for this!
Nice 👍
Where is that cross hatch fabric tile sourced from? I can't find it anywhere and want to match the theme of my house for a bathroom remodel.
In the mudroom I have a wooden base board and tile. The guy that worked on the tile grouted the gap between the wooden base board and around the dooar (big gap between entrance and tile) but because its and old house it cracked and sink in some areas. Plus he did not seal it and I have stains all over. What do you recommend to do with that gap, take the grout out and put something else? Do you think I can apply another color, a darker one over the old one?
Thanks for video. Quick question. I have a half inch grout joint that sits between the tub and the tile that needs to be replaced. The silicone wore away and water got underneath and behind the grout. When I press it, it moves a bit so I figure it's time to replace it. What kind of grout removal bit/blade would I use for the larger half inch grout joint? Thanks in advance.
Uhhh if you have water leakage behind it wouldn't you remove whole lot, water proof and re do?
Thank u
I see you damaged the tiles with the multitool. Tha's my biggesst fear...
I agree! What is the value of the multi-tool if it is just going to chip the edges of your tile. Now you have to re-tile. You can clearly see the tiles that were chipped by the tool in the video. I wonder if all of the grout attachments would chip the tile like that.
WTf I was watching removing Gout videos. When I moved to the next, I thought this is a comedy with those tools 😆
In your personal opinion what other brands of power removal tools You recommend that make the job easier & fast ....?????
Thanks.
+ZOMBIESCAPCOM1 my experience is with Bosch and Fein, both are great tools
Hey Jeff, the hand held usually doesn't work for me when the joints are narrow :(
It's one of those jobs I really don't enjoy but it's on the "HONEY-DO" list.
BTW....First! Lol!
it's not my favorite project either, super messy when you take out a lot of grout. But the multi-tool makes it way easier. Right on, being first today!!!
Home Repair Tutor Yeah I know. BTW...Second, hahaha!
+snakemonkey555 you're on a roll today
Home Repair Tutor Just in the Holiday Spirit!
snakemonkey555 they make cup brushes for the drill spray bottle with hot water the drill in lowest setting
Unfortunaltley you chipped some of the tile you. Wed a thinner place for 1/8” joint
I grouted on top of grout, and now need to remove just the top layer. Would the hand held be my best bet?
where's the grout, e.g. shower floor or shower wall?
@@HomeRepairTutor shower wall
so what happened that your removing the grout did you not like the color?
+Flores 828 no reason in this bathroom, it's urethane grout and can be filled in no problem. I removed the grout just demonstrate the tools 👍
Home Repair Tutor o ok. im thinking of getting the fein 18v multi tool but idk how good their battery platform is. Are you considering on making a video review on it
+Flores 828 I'm happy with the 12V but hopefully will get my hands on an 18V soon. What type of work are you going to do with it?
Home Repair Tutor i usually use it to do drywall cutouts baseboard cuts or woodwork that needs smalls cuts. i have the ridgid multi tool which I really like the removable heads. but was thinking of purchasing a back up multi tool
“As you can see, this is a clay based tile.”
I did nothing see that.
Yeah, I have the pain staking task of re-grouting. What do you think of the Dremel oscillating tool vs the one your using?
+snakemonkey555 the Fein is solid and my favorite oscillating multi tool. It has plenty of power to chew threw grout with the grout removal blade
The Fein is solid BUT also very expensive. What are your thoughts on the Dremel MM30-3? It retails for about $80.
Hi! I have an issue, my wife and I installed glass mosaic backsplash tile, in our kitchen...but the thinset has seeped through the front and sides, and is now hardened there. Do you have recommendations on the best way to clean this out?
Try a razor scraper
can I use the multi tool if I have a much wider grout line?
Hey! Cool video.
Have you ever used a Dremel for grout removal? I wasn't sure but it's light and seemingly more agile so you don't scratch the tile? Thoughts?
Where from get grout tools in united Arab Emirates.sharjah
The link to your home repair tutorials comes up with Error 404
thank you, I just fixed it 😊
How much would that cost me to hire someone to regrout my shower?
A lot
blades on backwards. ....
+The Talking Donkey this is the Starlock system, it's on the correct way because there's only one way to install it
What are your impressions of the Regrout Tool from Intertrk? m.czcams.com/video/RyCWUzHHZis/video.html
Useless product & waste of time.
Need to buy a shop vac too? Nope - fail.
I can see you have no hands on skil at all.
