I’m a Korean American who lived in Texas and there’s actually a similar thing to y’all, used exclusively in the southern regions of Korea! It’s “ma”, which also means “you” in a broad way, and can imply so many meanings just like y’all. Fun to see a ubiquitous southern thing.
Robyn Daniell yeah but when I’m on campus in my university a lot of people don’t understand. Plus I like adding a little more sass between my words. As a Floridian it’s hard to not speak in a mixed southern accent especially when ur Latina too.
To the people I’ve seen complaining in the comments about this being overly done: the South is big. Your area may not use this word this way, but where I live in south Louisiana it is absolutely accurate. Also, props for using the correct spelling of y’all. ;)
"To the ones that's trine to play like they smart and put ya'll, or just flat out get it wrong with a yall, that is just so wrong. They just aint took english." 🤓
In Australia we have a term “fair dinkum” which basically means true. It is very nuanced when used by old school Aussies. It is able to authenticate actuality and quality. It can stand alone as a question. It is used as a substitute for very and really. It can be a stand alone expression for surprise, disappointment, disgust, realisation and admiration. It is also used to verify information or instruction. Long live regional linguistics.
No need for immature cursing son! Grow up and learn to communicate respectfully and intelligently like a real gentleman or moral character. How pathetic.
The boy in the back seat annoying his sister and then mocking her with "stop touching me" with that tone and look on his face was an Oscar winner in my book. He nailed it. Because that's how ya actually do it.
What I love about the UK is that y'all have the same problem where everybody takes jabs at the South lol. We have that problem here because everyone thinks we're just a buncha goobers who lack a certain level of "class" and "sophistication." Although when I look at my family at gatherings, I tend to understand why we're seen that way lol.
I'm a southerner. But not of USA. . I live in southern Asia. South India Southern part of my state South Canara district. Southern part of the city South wing of the hostel. . Hell even my bed is in southern part of my room.
I only lived in New Orleans for 3 years, from 1985-1988. I STILL bust out the y'all from time to time. People look at me kinda funny until I explain that I came by the expression honestly! And I understood every one of those examples in the video. Lol
And for those who think incorrectly, y'all is never singular. All y'all, however, refers to each and every member of the group to whom you are speaking; it's basically an emphasis that you are indeed referring to EVERYone and not just the majority of the group.
I’ve heard my relatives in Kentucky say ‘thang’, plus their accent is definitely much more evident than it is in this video. Mine has mellowed a lot here in NC, but when I visit it comes back.
@@MelB868 Where do you live? In Speech class my teacher had a difficult times getting to say "thing" instead of "thang" and other Southern 'isms'. We had to stand in front of a mirror and watch ourselves as we talked. :-) Quite the funny lesson! We laughed hysterically.
It’s a what mixes well and what doesn’t kind of thing. Basically, what PC and Southern mean by “we’re having an icebreaker” is that the two groups are going to get together for an event that is centered on the enthusiastic breaking of ice over one another’s heads.
I'm from Texas and my boyfriend is from New Jersey. The first time he heard me say "y'all" he teased me about it, and ever since then I've been saying it as often as humanly possible with a more southern sounding accent😂
I am born and raised in Southern California. Never moved. Still live here to this day. I use y’all in everyday conversations. Granted I am from a rural area, but still. It’s so much easier than saying you all. Or all you guys. 💜
Don't forget "How are y'all?" where you're referring to that person and their family or roommates and use "y'all" even though you're talking to one person. Not to be confused with "how are all y'all" which refers to a big crowd which you're addressing.
It's in the blood ! I grew up in Northern California and I was the only kid (along with my brothers ) that communicated in "y'all". Thank God I finally made it home to Texas!
That fella definitely deserved a "check him out" y'all! Also, I live in Pennsylvania, but I wrote this comment without a single thought. I think I've been watching too many of these videos!
I'm the ONLY one in my entire family throughout the history of the U.S. to be born on the West Coast, but everyone else in my family is Southern and I so relate to all of these videos! 😂
I think you should have used the word your instead of you're (which means "you are"). We (southerners) have problems with people misspelling y'all as ya'll, too. Make sure you use the right one!
We LOVE Y’all in Nashville! Just last week, went to get an ultrasound, and the technician randomly mentioned a part in your videos and I said oh my gosh, I love Y’all! We went on and on about our favorite ones. You do us proud! 💋💋
chef kdowg Oops, you're right. I tend to put the apostrophe next to the L's when I write because it's easier to make three consecutive lines instead of throwing an "a" in the middle of them. Probably just laziness.
I accidently say ya'll. I don't have much of a southern accent (though I was born in the south) but now and then I will be like "YA'LL THIS IS INSANE".

I love this! So cool to hear about other "Southern" languages. :)
All southern kids know that it’s in their mommas tone of voice no matter what she’s sayin! Lol
Don't hope your Mama uses your whole name either then you're in DEEP TROUBLE!!!!

Robyn Daniell yeah but when I’m on campus in my university a lot of people don’t understand. Plus I like adding a little more sass between my words. As a Floridian it’s hard to not speak in a mixed southern accent especially when ur Latina too.
LizMarie Diaz try holding in ur southern baptist accent when u live in California , I say y'all more times then I'd rather recommend
+Robyn Daniell Or "Y'op" ("all need to st" implied)!

We in Texas spell it ya'll
@@MsMandyandy don’t lie
I'm born and raised in Wenatchee Washington. But my momma had family from all over the South. It's engrained in me to say Y'all.

You should check out the history of the f word.
"All of y'all" is a southern staple.
Damn if these videos don't make me miss home. The silent y'all with the "bless her heart" had me rolling.
George Hutto that's classic, lol

No need for immature cursing son! Grow up and learn to communicate respectfully and intelligently like a real gentleman or moral character. How pathetic.
To whom was that directed? I ask because I see a reply from Antonio Cruz that, to me, only shows my name but has no content.
Yankees be like that 😂
I got scared hearing that momma tone of hers. Ha!
Isagail. I think most of us heard it and thought yes ma’am.
Y'all hu-ush!

What's wrong
wmwflwsbs What?
My favorite is “what y’all...” I always end up making the “ch” sound... “whatchyall” 😂
Whatchyalldoin’?
Same. XD
@@annap7678 Or just “chyall doin?”
@@DreamingCatStudio I LIKE it!! A contraction of a contraction!
And then a proper Southern gal winds up the sentence with "doin" as in "whatchyall doin'?"

Y'all are welcome anytime!
0:04 Love this accent. I would never ever get tired of a lady talking like that.
My church sets up displays every fall for people to take pictures in front of. My favorite one has a little sign that says "It's fall, y'all."
As a southerner I understand all of these
Of course. Normal conversation.
"All y'all" is like a southern "double negative" (but with nouns)...I use it all the time anyway! (GA girl here) 🌸
I only lived in New Orleans for 3 years, from 1985-1988. I STILL bust out the y'all from time to time. People look at me kinda funny until I explain that I came by the expression honestly! And I understood every one of those examples in the video. Lol

Its also is the plural of you and comes from "ye all" in lowland Scott, a variant of english. As Scott-irish and english are very common in the south.
This should be added to grammar books so non-Southerners won't get so confused :D
Ok
Howze y'all momma and them.
I call it "the emphatic plural".
I live in the south and this is sooo true.
I died when the random chick said "You all" and under "silent y'all" it said bless her heart😂💀
Grew up in Nebraska but learned y'all from a Texas woman I worked with. Just about every day she would say "y'all are so full of it."
Heh.... I'm from Wisconsin, and I use "y'all"in my texts.... then again, it could be 'cause I've been living in Looziana for the last two decades. 😁
Well...I think it should say, "It's a Southern Thang" because we don't say 'thing' in the South. We say thang.
