I saw Vince at the Ohio State Fair in Columbus, Ohio. Vince’s Dad was a federal court judge in Columbus. He died 2 weeks before the show. We thought Vince would cancel, but he didn’t. His last song was “Go Rest High On The Mountain “. He broke down crying after about 30 seconds into the song. Everyone stood and finished singing the song for him while he stood on stage and cried. We all left the show crying.

Dwight Yoakum sang "In the Garden" at Buck Owens' funeral. Alan Jackson sang "He Stopped Loving Her Today" at George Jones' funeral, too. Songs not quite as tear jerking as "Go Rest High...," but still pretty sad & sung with sadness. Just saw Gill, et al (?), sang "Go Rest High..." then, too! Cheers!
"You're no stranger to the rain..." Vince started writing this when Keith Whitley died of acute alcohol poisoning and "finished" when his brother died. However, he did not feel it was complete and in 2020 completed the song.
The lyrics to the new verse are as follows: "You're safely home in the arms of Jesus / Eternal life, my brother's found / The day will come I know I'll see him / In that sacred place, on that holy ground."
He fought his way through this song with the help from Patty Loveless at George Jones', aka Possum, funeral where other stars stood to support him. That version is very hard to watch.
I have not watched the entire video yet, such a powerful song.

The accident placed Bob in a coma for three months and left him with irreversible brain damage. He subsequently struggled in life and would lose contact with his family and friends. He died in 1993.[3] Gill wrote the song "It Won't Be the Same This Year" for his brother. This song is for my son Andrew. He was murdered December 10, 2017. It took me two years to be able to sing this for him in church. My heart is shattered. 😭😭😭😭😭😭💔💔💔💔. My beautiful son. Vince has the voice of an angel. And yes, this song hits emotional pangs that all human beings can relate to. I mean, is there any one of us who hasn't loved someone tortured by demons who has passed too early and just breaks our hearts in the process?

I attended a family service today for my 27 year old nephew who passed away January 3rd. He was a tormented young man who turned to drugs and alcohol. This song was played before his casket was closed for the final time. Damned near tore the heart right out of my chest. RIP Kyle 🙏 🕊 💜

I saw Vince Gill with the Eagles in Nashville. It was a great concert and Vince Gill did an amazing job filling in for Glen Frye.
First time here... These guys are more than just country music artists. They all 3 are more Bluegrass as well as country. Vince goes way back to rock n roll days ('70's). I know Ricky's big bluegrass guy. And Patty began in the late '80's doing more mainstream country, but she's got Bluegrass in her DNA coming from Kentucky! Lol! But all these people are craftsmen (and woman!). They are all excellent musicians and can play and sing with the best because they ARE the very best. I saw Patty on stage, not 15 ft away from me in '88 and I always knew she'd be special and I was right. This music is great because it's real. From the heart n soul and as real as it gets. Vince Gill started writing this song in 1989 after the death of country singer Keith Whitley, but didn't finish it until after the death of his brother in 1993. Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs are singing harmony.
Definitely one of the most beautiful songs ever written. It brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it.
This was played at all my relatives funerals. It brings me to tears everytime. My family cemeteries are on top of mountains in WV. Closer to God we say and so beautiful.
After hearing a song like that, it makes me wonder how anyone could deny the existence of God.
When my father-in-law passed my wife was naturally extremely upset so I helped plan his funeral. He lived his whole life in the north Georgia (US) mountains and this song just seemed to fit his life perfectly, so I chose it. He died in 2009 and my wife still can't listen to the song without breaking down. And to be honest, neither can I.
So sorry for your loss. The mountain top will be my resting place too. Prayers 🙏
Unlike you, I wasn't able to hold back tears. I lost my sister last May, after watching her suffer with kidney failure for 3 years. This is the first time I've heard this song and it truly moved me. Thank you for sharing this reaction with us...it was wonderful ! Music is supposed to move you so tears are allowed, even for an Englishman 😉❤.

I had this song played at my husband's funeral almost 15 years ago and a lot of people must have had it played at loved one's funerals because I believe it has replaced "Amazing Grace" as the number one song to be requested at funerals. Of course the lyrics and the tune are beautiful but add to the mix Vince's remarkable voice and the stunning harmony provided by Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs and you pretty much are guaranteed that you will have a hit song.

I think I fell in love with Vince’s voice the first time with “When I Called Your Name.” Most recently, his song about his wife, contemporary Christian singer, Amy Grant…”When My Amy Prays” reminded me of why I love his vocals/lyrics. Of course he’s also one of the best guitar players in country music, too.

While I understand why many think this is true it is not. "When I Called Your Name" was released on his 1990 album by the same title, he was married to his first wife at that time. He did not meet Amy Grant until about 1993 or 94. Amy was married at the time. The both eventually divorced in the late 90s and got married in 2000.

This song is amazing and brings me to tears almost every time I hear it. I remember I saw Vince perform it at Carnegie Hall some years after he had released it and he had said a brief statement about the number of people that had written to him or told him how much it helped them through their times of grief, and he seemed genuinely shocked. But that is the kind of man Vince Gill is, very humble, very "almost shy", not looking for notice or fame from others. The first time I ever heard Vince's voice, that high pure tenor, on "When I Call Your Name" I fell in love with him and his voice instantly. He's an amazing singer, but is singing doesn't compare to his guitar playing, he is one of the best guitar players in the U.S. You've probably heard him on many Artists albums from Rock to Blues to Country to Christian and didn't even know it. He turned down an offer to join "Dire Straits" as their Guitarist, because he'd just signed his first Country Music label. When he got older and slowed down the Country thing, he joined the Eagles and played with them for a while. He is an amazing "strings" player and if you ever get the chance to check out a video and see his Guitar Collection....its incredible.

Home Free has a very beautiful version of this song with a video that has a military theme. They wanted to give justice to the amazing song but somehow not disrespect it. It's extremely emotional and respectful. The military themed video is a way to give honor to the original song but not take away any of the meaning, just show's how the pain and loss of loved one's can be felt in different circumstances. legend! Started out in pop, easy rock/ folk/ top 40 genres with a group called Pure Prairie League. An amazing singer/ songwriter/guitarist and multiple times over award winner! Vince started to write this song when his friend Keith Whitley died then finished it when his brother died....never do I hear this song without thinking of my Dad...I lived in NC and my Dad was in Ohio ..I drove 12 hrs to get home and heard this song 3 times on my car radio on my way home to Ohio..anyone in the US knows how hard it is to get good radio stations when going state to state and this was in 2004..I figured it was a message to me..I think what are the chances of hearing it 3 times in 12 hours

I usually find Home Free's version of the song comparable to the original, but they have nothing on this song. This is the most amazing version of this that I have ever heard.
Along with Vince Gill is Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs. As you heard, their harmonies are to die for. I first heard this song at my God-Father’s funeral in 1999. No matter how many times or how many versions of this song I’ve heard, I usually end up in tears. It seems like this is a top choice for people to play at a loved one’s funeral. Vince is one, if not the best, guitar/banjo pickers in country. He plays on many people’s songs. He’s been around forever & has an angelic tenor voice. He’s married to Amy Grant a famous Christian/country singer in her own right. While this was a beautiful, soulful song there are others that show case his voice/playing better. He has a very large catalog of work!: Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain, Will the Circle be Unbroken...so many.
Also he plays with the group The Eagles when needed for the member who passed away a few years ago.

That lone violin, oh my...as mournful as bagpipes or a solitary harmonica. Such a treasure this song and Vince Gill. Have bought many records of his over the decades. I had to put my 16 y.o. doggie down two days ago, and I'm looking for a few songs to commemorate his life and love we had together. This song, along with Elvis', "I'm So Lonely, I Could Cry". In Texas, we bring our dogs home with us, if we have a yard to bury them. It's very comforting. Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs backup is supreme.

Does this song not remind you of an old Irish or Scottish folk song? You can hear the roots of Appalachian bluegrass style music as they are directly related to their Irish and Scottish ancestors who settled in the Appalachian Mountains of the south.
I strongly suggest you check out Vince Gill's song Let Me Love You Tonight. It's a little more upbeat and another good representation of what his music is like.

He has many great songs - mostly from the 90s - and some 80s, I guess - I sent a bunch of his songs the 1st time I inundated you with those 2 long lists. Ha ha. My father died when I was 6 - and he was a Christian - but James Taylor's "Fire & Rain," is the song that always made me think of him. (I'm aware there are lines that are for adults, not father/daughter, but a lot of the song's lyrics & sound hit me with a case of the blues). This song reminds me of a friend. Glad you liked him!! Vince G. is married to Amy Grant (gospel/"popish" singer, probably heard of her) and I believe they still live in metro Atlanta, Georgia. There is one song I'll repeat from the list I gave you. I am pretty sure you got the songs in your "thingamabob." This song was a radio hit, but now it's kind of hard to find, have to scroll pretty far..."There Ain't No Future in the Past." Beautiful vocals, really high notes, pretty, melancholy song. It seems to be one of those songs that was popular but he's not known for that now so I guess it got dumped in the memory hole of YT. My uncle who was like a big brother to me was killed in a coal mine accident ( a cave in )
and this eong came out that same week. I remember driving down the road and I had to pull over when I heard it for the first time. This past September, my best friend of 24 years died instantly and unexpected from a blood clot that noone knew she had. This song has helped me tremendously through both losses

This song means a lot to millions of people. And many people have requested to have this song played at a loved one's funeral. In my case, my mom planned her entire funeral while she was dying of cancer. Her old co-worker and a good friend sang this at my mother's funeral last November shortly after her diagnosis. Vince Gill was her favorite artist and this was her favorite song.
Oddly enough whenever I hear the song I do not cry, I smile because when I hear it I know that we did well with remembering her.
That is what this song is about remembering the loved ones that you have lost. As well as celebrating the life that they lived.

What can one say about Vince Gill.. True story... My nephew was installing a putting green that his wife was giving him as a present... Went by to see the job .He walked up to me and as I said nice to meet you Mr Gill, he quickly interrupted me and said with a smile just call me Vinnie... This is a real down to earth person... Oh and a great singer songwriter...
I saw him sing this in New York at Carnegie Hall with Ricky Scaggs and instead of Patty Loveless, Allison Krauss did the harmony... While it was wonderful, it had a totally different vibe..
This and "Daddy's Hands" are the 2 that I remember from my Papa's funeral. This was played at my Nanys graveside also but I think more of my daddy when I hear this. Daddy's Hands is another really great one.
Im from Louisiana and to see you genuinely acknowledge the amazing one of a kind voice Vince has is so refreshing. My Grandma was over the moon for him and i remember her playing him all the time. This holds a very special place in my heart. We played this song while we were carrying both of my parents caskets at their funerals from the herse to the grave.
We played this at our father's funeral. He loved it. He lost his ten year cancer battle. But as he drew his last breath. He went with hands lifted worshiping the Lord. He hugged those who went before.
This is a beautiful son. I played it at my dad's funeral and my brother's. Give John Michael Montgomery's I Miss You A Little. It always gets me to tear up. I played that one at their funeral as well, and it hit me harder than this one.

This was played at my nephew's funeral. He was only 19 years old and had just graduated, had gotten a scholarship and was planning on attending college when he was killed in a freak snowmobile accident. It was so heartbreaking and this song always makes me feel his loss.

Great song to react to; I'm a legacy fan of Vince Gill's from my mom and dad since I grew up hearing his music (mostly listened to country and classic metal growing up).
If you want another doozy of a tear-jerker country song, listen to "The Father, My Son, and the Holy Ghost" by Craig Morgan; I think you can figure out the specifics from the name. Tragic story honestly, but a POWERFUL song.

This is such a heart-wrenching song for me. I can never hear it without thinking of my dear mother. The male singer is Ricky Skaggs and the harmonies he adds to the song are incredible.
