This was an incredibly hard task for Vince to do. He wrote the first verse for his friend the great Keith Whitley after he passed away. The second verse was written for Vince's brother who passed away at a young age. Vince was very close to George, so it was added emotion on top of an already emotional song. Please listen to his version with Ricky Scaggs and Allison Kraus to get the pure beauty of this incredible song.

I was fortunate to see him perform when he was 17 and just starting out. He played with a band called Mountain Smoke, all of whom I eventually knew EXCEPT Vince. His talent jettisoned him into the ozone pretty quickly. He still visits his old friends....and has no arrogance whatsoever.

Hi. Vince Gill had such an upbringing around these older "Country Legends" as a young boy n now a man. To see him break down on stage is understandable, to see Patty Loveless closely watching Vince n filling in with her powerful voice was very touching. To see those country music "Stars" stand for the song is such a testament to the support they give each other when they saw Vince struggling a little. Human emotions n support were given to all that day. Peace to you and yours

I am glad you are getting to know Vince Gill, because he is one of the premier country singer/songwriters. Most country singers now only wish they had half his talent. He is in the Country Music Hall of Fame and, as of last year, has 22 Grammy Awards. Only Alison Kraus surpasses him in the Grammy numbers (27 as of 2020--individual, and 14 more with her band Alison Kraus and Union Station. She is as astonishing as he is. There are great country singers...and then there are those who are just on a level few will ever achieve. Vince, Alison, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams Sr...four I can think of right off the bat. There are others, but very few others.

George Jones called Vince Gill Sweet Pea because he’s such a nice guy; and an artist not ashamed to wear his heart in his sleeve. He’s also as you no doubt one of the industry’s best musicians. It was as if he had to play that extol long bridge so he could get his anxiety and emotions under control. I could not imagine having to do that especially with your hero and friend lying in his casket right below you. I’ve seen Dolly Parton cry only a couple of times because she’s always so upbeat I think she’s afraid she’d be crushed by the world’s population coming to comfort her. The one time it happened on live TV was when she was asked to give out the song of the year at the the CMAs in 95 or 96 and Vince won for this song. When he came from backstage and he saw the standing ovation he just broke down. The song was written for his brother who passed the previous year. When Dolly saw that she handed that award back to the “model” and she went straight to Vince and started rubbing his back and let him lean on her while she was pouring tears herself. While he made his speech she stood back behind biting her lip to try to get herself back together. God bless all of us that are tender hearted and still wear them on our sleeves.

I’ve been waiting for this one! That’s one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen. If you didn’t know anything of Patty Loveless before watching this video, you walk away knowing she is a class act and a cut above. She could have just as easy stood there & let Vince flounder in his emotions, but she stepped up and she carried it, while at the same time consoling him & helping him regain his composure. That takes style & class folks! Patty is one of those that is mostly known as a “backup” or “harmony” singer- she had a solo career, but she’s best known for her work with Vince & Ricky Skaggs among others. In my opinion, she’s pure badass. Listen to her live version of “you’ll never leave Harlan alive” if you want to hear what she can really do vocally.

He actually did that sing a bit ago, which indicates just how smartly he is researching what songs and videos to do. Patty did a lot of "mainstream" songs with radio airplay in the 1990s, but he managed to dig up one that I don't think ever got played on the radio, at least not the "mainstream" stations, but that was nothing short of legendary to those in the know.

What always struck me is that she was also very close to George Jones and had to be hurting as much as he was, but she held it together and helped him through it. You can hear parts where her voice starts to fill, then trails off as she watches him and follows his lead and helps him make it through the song. I have loved this performance since I first saw it because it was such a display of friendship and support. There are only a small number of people who can push through their own grief to help others and we should cherish them.

Vince is one of those guys who's been around so long, the '70's kept calling him back. Now he's singing with the Eagles! Together, these two are why us old guy's and gals prefer real country music... because its REAL. Just as the people in it are. Without genuine love for one another, what's the point? I don't know new country. When I hear it, I find I don't like it much. But these two, and who they're singing about, well... God bless them every one!

It is, a great honor to George Jones, a very powerful tribute to the legend. Gill, recorded this is 1995, there is a common belief that Gill wrote this song for his brother, Bob, who passed from a heart attach in 1993. The fact is, Vince started writing this tune for another legendary baritone/tenor named Keith Whitley in 1989. Whitley was well know to fight the battle of vices we see so many times. Mr. Gill completed the song in 1993 at the passing of his brother to eulogize his life. Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs recorded with Gill as backup singers on this 1995 album. Vince Gill has recorded some of the finest Gospel music of all of them in my opinion. Thank you PJ, always enjoy your work !!

My husband died just over 13 years ago and I had this song played at his funeral. It is my understanding that Amazing Grace was the number one song requested to be played at funerals until Vince wrote Go Rest High and now I believe it has replaced Amazing Grace as the number one song sung at funerals. The year my husband died, I attended four funerals that summer and this song was played at three of them. It's a beautiful song but it is one that I cannot listen to without crying and that's even if it isn't this super emotional performance by Vince and Patty. Other people have mentioned what a class act Patty was as she helped Vince through this song so I won't add a lot to what they have already said. I will just say, I agree, wholeheartedly.

I like the upload where they include the funny personal story Vince told about George sending him a bunch of cans of ravioli. George also personally nicknamed Vince "Sweat Pea". I remember watching an old video with multiple country stars telling stories, in which Vince talked about it. They were very close friends.
Charlie Daniel's also gave an awesome eulogy at George's funeral. Charlie has a great way of putting things into words.
Though it's strange for me to think about how Charlie was at this funeral to hear this performance. Because a couple of years ago, I watched Charlie's funeral service via a livestream, and Vince performed this song there too. So in an odd way, it's almost like Charlie got a front row seat to see a performances that was done at his own funeral. Though, Vince did it solo at Charlie's funeral and didn't break down.

Keith Whitley's death rocked the country music community, including his friend Vince Gill. Gill began writing "Go Rest High on That Mountain" after Whitley's death and finished the tune four years later, when Gill's brother passed away from a heart attack. 💔

One of my favorite Vince Gill Songs is called When I Call Your Name.
If you get a chance listen to it.
It shows the real range of his vocals.

The song was originally written about Keith Whitley in the first verse and his brother in the second. It is a powerful song and played frequently at funerals. Everytime I hear it, I get goose bumps. It's just one of those songs.

Such a moving song. I've not been to a family members or friends funeral where it has not been played. I just couldn't have it played at NY husband's funeral. It would have undone me completely.

He originally wrote this song for his brother but I think they use it now at just about every country singer funeral.

  • @thewhiskeycowboy-official

It breaks me up seeing him unable to sing like that... and I fully understand why. If folks want to hear him singing the song fully, they need to go watch the official music video for the song. Vince can really belt them out, but was so emotionally overcome in this situation that he just did what he could do. Cheers.

Shows how much love Vince had for George. Alan Jackson sang He Stopped Loving Her Today at that same service. He made it all the way though, but you could still see the pain. I don’t know how it is in other genres, and I don’t know how it is with the most modern ‘country’ artists, but for many decades, Country Music was a community.
Now you need to go hear what that really sounds like, it is so beautiful. Look up Vince Gill Go Rest High On That Mountain Official Music Video, singing with Patty and Ricky Skaggs. The song was inspired by the death of two men, Vince’s bother and Keith Whitley. Keith and Ricky Skaggs met as teens and played with Ralph Stanley’s bluegrass band. Both grew up to be very important forces in Country Music. Many of the lines of this song are directly referring to words and titles of Whitley’s songs. Keith was a great songwriter and singer, but he was a tortured soul. Keith wrote and recorded a song I’ve Done Everything Hank Did But Die, referencing Hank Sr. Then Keith did that, too, age 33 from alcohol poisoning. It as a sad day for Country Music.
As for Vince and his voice, you have some real treats coming your way with him. SMOOTH. And he is another one, like Glen Campbell, that also is an accomplished guitarist. In addition to the above song, I recommend first, When I Call Your Name Official Music video. Also, Never Knew Lonely official video. I Still Believe In You. Nobody does that high lonesome sound better than Vince.
And then when you want good laugh, watch The Notorious Cherry Bombs, It’s Hard To Kiss The Lips At Night (Official Video) with Vince and Rodney Crowell. They each dress up as the other’s wife. I like to watch this when I need a good chuckle in life. Rodney Crowell was the son in law of Johnny Cash and even recorded a song about Johnny and the first time he heard I Walk the Line. I was a very small child but I remember the first time I heard I Walk The Line, I though he was saying lion, not line. Rodney Crowell & Johnny Cash I Walk The Line Revisited

If you would like to hear the singer this song is about Keith Whitley I’m No Stranger To The Rain is a good place to start. And Between an Old Memory and Me. And a search on Keith Whitley Lorrie Morgan will find you duet of Keith and his wife Lorrie. Lorrie is the daughter of George Morgan and she is named after Loretta Lynn. A great singer in her own right.

Jones' funeral and emotions were so naturally expressed.
Thanks much for your very apt reaction.
In case you didn't know, Vince is now touring as a member of the legendary group The Eagles. He's a great vocalist and guitarist.
I love a good bit of his past work. "One More Last Chance" is one light-hearted favorite of mine.
