    Justin is my most expensive friend, because he always has the best camera gear that I always end up buying too.
    Even though I have the same stuff (except the NDs - I have K&F NANO-X - not as fancy, but work great), I think someone starting out on CZcams should use their phone and a decent mic.

      @@JustinBMcBride I filmed an adventure vid in Hawaii last year with my phone (and like 2 crappy drone shots). It's doable, especially when starting out...or when you have to pack light..or if you are cheap/lazy...I've been all of those things...sometimes all at once.

    I can say that personally I'd rather watch a channel with less-than-perfect video production values but with a great storyteller behind the lens. Sweeping drone shots, generic music, etc, are a dime a dozen. I want to be in the virtual passenger seat with you. I want to hear you (or any CZcamsr) describe your adventure. The highs and the lows; your beautiful campsite, the towns and people you encounter, the technical primitive 2-track you traversed, the flat tire, the stranded motorist you winched out, the tow truck when a diff breaks, etc. Gear-wise, a decent mic is the single most important thing you can use. If I can't hear the narration I'm not going to watch.

    As a retired Navy Photographer (equipment maintenance and repair actually) I had fallen away from photography. When the Navy started with digital imaging in 1994, I jumped into that world. But as I retired in 2001, I've followed a different path. Well, my world changed last year, and I decided to dabble in the CZcams world. I've also stuck my toes back in the digital photo world thanks to a really great friend. I'm running a 22 Gladiator Rubicon while pretending to overland (more next season as I continue to purchase things I need), working on a 95 Grand Cherokee (owned 17 years, time to get some long arms and lift and hit the trails), and soon will be collecting parts for a 1962 IH Scout (cruiser, mild offroader are my plans). And other projects and mayhem along the way. Basically, chronicle when I can, learn to edit on the fly, and just have fun and not take myself too seriously. IF I can entertain or help others along the way, so much the better... I'm having some grand adventures along the way in this beautiful state of Utah...

    Gear does not matter at all. The 3 C’s are what is most important. Consistency, Creativity, & Charisma. That is what matters the most to have a successful CZcams channel. “The Outdoor Boys” = 3.6 Million subscribers, uses old GoPros. “MAV” = 2.38 Million subscribers, uses an iPhone, “Nikki Delventhal” 736 Thousand subscribers, uses an iPhone. None of them have drones, gimbals, ND filters etc. I love the “Geardo” aspect of this hobby. I have thousands of dollars worth of camera gear for a small CZcams channel, because I to tinker with all the cool gadgets. But none of it is needed for CZcams. ( which you do identify at the end of your video). I am just backing that up with this comment. (That is also why my channel is not growing, i am not consistent)

      @FaddaJoe Před 10 měsíci

      Perhaps the best example on youtube showcasing this is Demolition Ranch. Non an "adventure" channel, but he didn't start using high quality camera gear until he amassed around 10 million subscribers, currently at 11.4 mil. Half of his videos were filmed on GoPros and/or cheap DSLRs. Those 3 C's are the #1 thing that sets apart successful youtubers.

    I am glad that you aren't one of those people saying that they can shoot with a potato and that gear doesn't matter because it does matter in a way, especially as an intermediate it can really help a lot. I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max and although its couple of years old my sony 7ii from 2015 shoots photos and videos 10x better than my phone especially once you learn the basics like ios, shutter etc. And the funny thing is that I got it for only $700 with a 28-70mm lens both barely used. All of the other things you mentioned are on point such as the ND filters, the only thing is that I believe that people who are not doing photography/videography professionally or don't have the budget shouldn't spend thousands on things such as gimbals and other accessories they might use couple of times, its simply not really worth it for many.

  • @Clouder77
    @Clouder77 Před 10 měsíci +1

    Full frame will give you more background blur but I feel a crop sensor is more budget friendly like the new Sony a6700. I use it as my main camera with the Sigma 16mm 1.4 lens and the new Sony ECM-M1 shotgun microphone. Get a v90 memory card and you are good to go at 4K. Freewell ND filters are a good budget friendly filter.

    • @JustinBMcBride
      @JustinBMcBride  Před 10 měsíci

      APSC/cropped sensors aren’t worth the investment. Starting with a budget full-frame like the A7C starts the investment into lenses that will stick with a creator for longer. APSC is poor in low light and cropped sensor lenses aren’t compatible on full-frame sensors. When a creator is faced with upgrading their camera body, they’ll have to buy new lenses too.
      Not worth it in the long run.

    • @Clouder77
      @Clouder77 Před 10 měsíci

      @@JustinBMcBride i disagree because you can use full frame lenses on crop sensor cameras and if your vlogging in the dark use a light. Not everyone can afford full frame and you don’t need it for CZcams. If you have the money yah get full frame I’m just making an argument for budget minded folks.

    • @JustinBMcBride
      @JustinBMcBride  Před 10 měsíci

      @@Clouder77 So let’s say you pick up the 20mm f1.8 to use on a 1.6x crop APSC sensor knowing one day you will buy a full-frame. That 20mm is now a 35mm and unusable as a vlog lens.
      Budget minded creators are better off using their phone or an action camera than an APSC if they have aspirations to go full-time. And, as I said at the beginning of the video, to stand apart from all the other creators out there.
      The a6700 is $1800 with an 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens. A Sony A7C is $1500 and the 20mm 1.8 is currently $798. For $400 more than the a6700 you have a full frame sensor and f/1.8 lens. APSC isn’t worth the money.

    • @Clouder77
      @Clouder77 Před 10 měsíci

      @@JustinBMcBride you are assuming all full time creators need full frame and they don’t. It can improve production value I get it. The Sony A7C is the cheapest and best option for entry level with Sony, but full frame lenses are way more expensive, bigger and heavier. Sony makes crop sensor cameras for a reason they are smaller, lighter and cheaper. Some people prefer a lighter setup. If you compare a6700 to the older a7c in terms of video features the a7c falls behind. Get the A7cII it will just cost you $800 more before tax if you want 10-bit video up to 600 mb/s, which the a6700 has.

  • @joemzd
    @joemzd Před 10 měsíci

    A contributor to the "professional look" in videos is motion blur, and you absolutely need a collection of ND filters to achieve that. Generally speaking, you'll want to follow the 180 degree rule: your shutter speed (exposure) being double your frame rate, i.e. 30 fps means your shutter speed should be 1/60.

  • @tom_gorman

    Great info. Could you talk a little about responsible drone use and regulations? I started using one and then realized there are very strict rules the FAA put in place that many ignore. You need a part 107 certification to use one or you risk massive FAA fines.

    • @JustinBMcBride
      @JustinBMcBride  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Part 107 for commercial use, yes. There is a hobby license that most can operate under as long as they aren’t publishing monetized content. Pilot Institute is a much better resource than I am on the matter though.

    • @805Rock
      @805Rock Před 9 měsíci

      @@JustinBMcBride Agreed Pilot Institute is awesome. Took their 107 course. Maybe mention the requirement so people don’t run out and get themselves in trouble? You reach a lot of people and could help keep drones from being banned everywhere…which is getting more likely.

    I am actually a little disappointed with this video bud. You focused on so much camera gear and tools, but not on what is actually "needed" to be an adventure youtuber. Every youtuber talks about cameras, lenses, drones and even DaVinci, which I swear by as well. But what I was hoping to see is technique, how do you make your stories? How to film while on the move? How long do you truly spend on a trail to get the shots you need? How do you know you have all the shots you need? How do you fly the drone expertly while driving? Those kinds of things, that's what makes a youtuber an "Adventure CZcamsr".... make sense? Not that this was not good information or that I didn't pick up on something I didn't know, but I would like to see a video focusing on the making of an adventure video.... 😀
