You and Louis i think share a passion for fixing what would normally be thrown out. If the Macbooks arent fixable, there at least a full video discussing why it should be fixable and/or why the broken board is needed to fix simple issues apple wont allow parts to be sold for.
I bet Louis Rossman could tell you exactly what's wrong with it in about 5 seconds. Then he will drill a hole through the motherboard and it will work again. The guy is a wizard I swear.
Really interesting channel this, and at least your honest when you don’t manage to fix stuff. Doing a better job at recycling electronics than most, keep up the good content
The best way to figure out shorts is to keep a static point (ground point) and figure out the closest point where it has the lowest resistance. Generally either a chip or bad solder due to liquid damage. Either way you will get the smallest resistance at the shorted point. Or just run several amps and look through a thermal camera. Or even more amps and wait for the smoke :)
I have this great old office chair that unfortunately would sink and the faux leather on the armrests had peeled off, so I was thinking of replacing it... but then I just realized I could replace the piston and reupholster the armrests and now it's good as new. Right to repair is so important; I hope Apple changes their tune on it eventually. Thanks for the video! As Louis would say: I hope you learned something.
Check the backlight traces, there's a known flaw where something like a 52v backlight trace is right next to a 1.2v CPU power trace and there's no filter or fuse between that circuit and the CPU- if the 52v finds its way into the 1.2v line for any reason the CPU is dead. Might not be that but from what I've seen it's possible. Would be interesting to see you post a follow-up video where you remove the CPU, fix whatever caused the short, and then install a new CPU. The problem is that those CPUs aren't cheap and are hard to find.
Rossmann has a zhao Mao for bga chip replacement but replacement CPUs are generally expensive enough to attempt to do that it's not worth it, even if you have the station paid for.
From watching a ton of laptop repair videos, it seems if water damaged you stand the best chance with disgnosing if the original corrosion can be seen and then work out what this would have impacted via schematics and tracing. Once someone has messed with the item I'd keep well away as you are searching for a needle in a haystack. Thanks for these videos. Admire your patience.
I love all your bad decisions. Makes for great vids. BTW I like you're adoption of the "half split" troubleshooting method. They taught us that in Naval Electronics School and it really shows you the direction to go.
Lol I love how you found out that the iPhone X smart battery case has a chip that can work on the MacBook or something, idk man that sounds so cool and I love how much you had to do for this and all the extra things you did that I never would’ve thought of doing 😄
The new iPhone can't be repaired anymore. Almost all of the parts are locked to the logic board and don't work in another iPhone. But at least we have a few charging bricks less.
Who’s repairing stuff nowadays? Most people don’t have the knowledge or tools and if you are paying someone to do it (personally I wouldn’t know whom I’d ask) it’s probably going to be quite expensive. Let’s face it, most people just buy new stuff. Overall Apple is probably more environmentally friendly than most other smartphone or laptop manufacturers because they only sell high-end stuff which doesn’t get replaced as often (or is sold on).
@@Mike-oz4cv Dude! You just opened my eyes! Basically that also means Lamborghini, Ferrari, and others like that are more environmentally friendly than the usual family cars with their tiny engines and maximum fuel efficiency. Because there are only very few super cars around, plus the owners probably aren't driving them 20km or even more every working day around the year. So, it basically doesn't matter how much gas the super cars guzzle because in the big picture it's absolutely nothing compared to the millions upon millions of normal cars eating miles every single day.
Unrelated to this video but your ps4 analog stick drift video. The cleaning part worked a treat on mine and I thankyou as you have saved me from spending £45 weeks before the PS5 comes out.
Make sure your buss line a0 or a1 didn't get shorted to the 50v back light power. They run right next to each other. A short to the buss from the back light will kill the 13" macs, the 15" may have a mux that gets taken out.
Easy fix, dip it into ultra sonic cleaning machine, then replace any components that will not function. Replace them with spare parts you have from other 2018 models laying around.
im not sure but it seems that the voltage isnt enough to let the current to move across all these resistance , so see where the highest voltage is and try to clean it or something, thanks for you vids and best of luck.
There has to be a new type of infra red camera that detects precisely where the short is, that's why we need Aether technology, well, once we've got it, it's bye bye electro magnetic spectrum

Dude if this board isn’t getting to 20V you have issues with the CD3215s. They negotiate power from charge ports. If one of those is bad, forget all the other stuff for now...
Shorted CPU MOSFET sent PPBUS 12v to the .7v CPU line. Only option is replace MOSFET and CPU but you run the risk of this being icloud locked to someone's account just like an iphone would be.
Oof shorted cpu to ground. She’s a goner, Louis might be able to use his machine to remove it, but 9 times out of 10 you’re not gonna find another working cpu, as donor boards also have a good chance having shorted cpus. I think its normal for the CPU to get that hot. When you injected voltage into it, the cpu didnt have any heat sink or fan or any cooling system, so the cpu got hot very quick. But dont take this serious, im not a professional, but thats just what i think
First thanks for your videos. It’s really fun to watch your repairs. I see many have already talked about rossman repairs. He sometimes complains about a bscan/jtag connector. Or maybe there is some other debug connector that goes to cpu. There is one called XDP in other designs.
I would not take a warm cpu as a sign of anything bad... Most cpus reach 60 degrees+ (celcius) before it even attempt to boot the operating system. There is a reason there is "the perfect amount of cooling paste" on those things... I don't have a clue what might be the next thing to test though. But I would say your elimination method was a good step in the right direction. Keep disconnecting til the error is gone.
next time to find a short circuit immediately, use a compressed air spray, the components freeze and the first component that melts the ice it will be the one in short circuit I use these techniques to repair Smartphone, in a few minutes you find the problem.
