- Final Fantasy's creator Hironobu Sakaguchi and the series's legendary composer Nobuo Uematsu sat down with me to chat about their brand new game, FANTASIAN.
I felt incredibly lucky for this honor, and I had to take the chance to have Uematsu-san listen to my favorite of my Final Fantasy VII Covers I composed.
We also talked a bit about his experience as a composer, why he started, and how he wrote One-Winged Angel.
This is a sneak peek, I'll be dropping the full interview tomorrow, where Hironobu Sakaguchi & Nobuo Uematsu will tell us a lot about FANTASIAN and the reasons why they made this game.

For me, the game is a beautiful breath of fresh air and a parting gift from Uematsu-san & Sakaguchi-san, who (sadly) won't be making new games or soundtracks after this one.

I met Uematsu san in Germany on the Distant World's Orchestra.
I wanted him to sign my Final Fantasy X Album CD, since it's my favorite of them all.
He looked me into the eyes and started humming the Hymn of Faith while doing so.
This was probably one of the most special moments in my whole life, he's such a humble soul.
That's so sweet. He didn't even fully compose for that game either.
What an awesome story. Yeah, definitely a memory you will cherish forever.

I'M SO JELOUS!~ Nobou Uematsu-san is absolutely my FAVORITE composer. Uematsu-san is responsible for my current taste in music ever since I was a kid, the legend literally shaped how I view / see music, NO, He changed my life! I still dream of one day going to his concert if ever another "Distant worlds" pops up nearby in asia. You are both so down-to-earth. I can FEEL the large amounts of BLISS from you here Alex. So happy you got this life-changing chance 🙌
Check out Yasunori Mitsuda's work as well. Very similar to Uematsu.

I really appreciate Uematsu talking about how even though FF has changed since 10, they still love the series and seeing it evolve. Composing music for him is about the time in which he exists in "now" and not necessarily just to appease nostalgia. I think part of why Soken has been so successful is that he took this teaching to heart and not only revisits classic tracks that are very nostalgic, helping them to transition into something more modern and in the "now," but also continues to progress forward and find new paths. What legends.

It's honestly so amazing seeing Alex thank this legendary man with such passion and reverence; I wish I could thank him too.

That not going to happen, because Square is very strict and they are avoiding it. They only doing inside their company.
The one mistake was Gackt and others for Dirge of Cerberus etc. They cannot make a remaster and so on. If they do, then Gackt want more money.

Absolutely my favourite track from the man himself, is To Zanarkand, 20 years later and Im still not tired of listening to it. My favourite memory of the song though, is my mom overheard it, when I played it and she just asked "oh, this sounds familiar, isnt it from a game you played a lot?" it almost brought a tear to my eye, still does. Nobuo Uematsu is a genius, he is the GOAT, and no one will ever, in my opinion, make a better music track than To Zanarkand. And I will gladly be proven wrong.
There is nothing better, than someone who has been inspired by their childhood heroes; in a sense, to finally get to meet those heroes, but also explain how they have been influenced by their work not only through expression of words, but through showcasing the fruits of labor from their own works as well.
This is such a great interview and moment and you can tell Uematsu and Sakaguchi are enjoying themselves.

10:00 When he talks about how he would try to mix and match parts of his ideas to create his works, it reminded me of FF8's boss theme Force Your Way. That piece can be split into 6-7 different parts and yet he somehow managed to combine each and every part to make a masterpiece
Also I wanted to note that I'd love to play Fantasian, however, the game is only for Apple Arcade atm and I only have android devices and a gaming PC, so unfortunately I will not be able to play it unless it comes to android or some sort of PC port

I met Uematsu-san in Brussels during a Piano concert of FF music. This man is a huge inspiration for me as well and I'm so jealous that you got to spend so much time with him ! I'm also glad to see that he seems to be in good health knowing what he has been going through.

It brought tears to my eyes to see this happen. Alex getting the opportunity to chat with Nobuo Uematsu and Hironobu Sakaguchi really blessed me. Final Fantasy is a huge part of my childhood and life as I make graphic novels and make music.

Wow, Nobuo is my fav composer, 6 is my favorite game of all time, my father died in A snow related car accident while I was playing it back in 1996 I think for the 3rd time. Nobuo's music and the themes of 6 helped me cope with the loss, and 6 months later I went into the army where I continued to hum the music through my training to keep my spirits up. I owe a lot to his music and as a super huge fan of his work ever since and Final Fantasy became my favorite franchise after 7.
I have to say your arrangement was amazing, the horns were so strong and the call outs to the other songs brought so much nostalgia back. Music truly is the greatest of the arts, it entertains, it heals and because it engages so much of the brain, memories tied to it have been proven to last a lifetime, even after suffering a stroke people remember music and memories tied to them. Guess the good thing is I'll never ever forget his music lol

The joke is they’ll tell you that no matter how little Japanese you spoke. You can say as little as arigatou or hai and they’ll go 日本語上手 immediately.
