(Peter) The Difficulty Menu of Doom Explained

- Doom's difficulty settings aren't always understood. Watch and learn how each difficulty distinguishes itself in Doom.
Songs used in chronological order:
Doom II - Into Sandy's City
Rise of the Triad - Goin' Down the Fast Way
MegaSphere - E1MAP01 (E1M1 and MAP01 mashup)
Doom - I Sawed the Demons
Doom II - Message for the Archvile
Enemies in Nightmare difficulty also have their minimum time before the first attack removed, and this change isn't a part of UV-fast ruleset in vanilla Doom or compatible ports. You can test it in HR18 if curious.
Once again I learn something new in Doom.
How big a difference does that make? Just the first attack it seems?
It doesn't seem like too big a difference, effectively cutting out their reaction time to seeing the player, but hitscan enemies first attack each time being instantaneous, rather than having a couple steps grace to take a shot? Certainly might add up on some levels.
Lvl 4 is a good example of it. I had no idea it had a code. Tnx
System Shock 1 has enemies like this, the enemies can attack you with hitscan attacks as soon as you get in their sightline. Especially bad is the Cyborg Assassin that is a small, dark enemy who has an attack that makes no sound at all. This leads to you entering a room and getting completely pummeled in seconds; especially in ambush-rooms like the one on the Reactor level where you enter a room, 4 doors open and enemies pound you.
You have to play it very differently, slowly entering rooms with your shields up.
"Can I play daddy" is probably exactly what prompted my dad to let me play a level of wolfenstein as a kid.

I never knew about that BFG on Bloodfalls. Always just thought that room was a mistake that was never finished.
I first played Doom 2 on Hurt Me Plenty, so knew about the BFG. Imagine my surprise when it's not there on Ultraviolence. Nice prank, though.
I liked that empty room back then, because I thought back then that there was not much QA player testing, so some rooms felt quite empty like it was made by a bunch of geeks and not very refined modern AAA game where everything is too safe though. It also adds a sense of real mystery in the place, like not every secret and room has a gameplay sense, but some of them exist on their own without a useful point, like this is a real hellish place with mysterious rooms nobody knows what they were all about.
Proof that HMP is the canon difficulty.

Another thing to note is that the original release of Doom only went up to Ultra-Violence. About a year later the 1.2 version added Nightmare - but this was back when few people had internet access so a lot of copies of Doom in circulation continued to run the original release version. I originally thought it was a feature added in Doom 2 (or Ultimate/Final/etc), and only found out the truth years later.

Ultra-Violence can be easy for even newcomers now. Thanks to the mouse and keyboard as, it turns out, making playing FPS games a hell of a lot easier - something that ID recognized even all the way back then. If you want to up the challenge but not jump to -fast or NM, I recommend trying out keyboard controls - it makes ambushes much harder when you can't instantly do a 180 flip.
To an extent yes.but I don't seem to have that much of a difficultly spike with keyboard (I use a and d to strafe while having both w and s as well as the arrow keys for moving forward and back, left and right arrows for turning).keyboard slows you down a little when pulling of tougher maneuvers through enemies.there is also a key that allows quick turns (I have seen this in the zdoom-engine based source ports).
@@necrosteel5013 Until about 6 years ago I never strafed. It was like operating a plane, it made the game hell. But that's just how I always played it since I was a kid.

I’ve enjoyed playing on UV for years, it’s the best all-around challenge for the game. Certain parts of NM are fun and I actually like how aggressive the enemies are, but the respawn is what turns me off. If they had tweaked it some to where enemies can only respawn once or if there was a chance they don’t respawn after death, it would have been a lot more reasonable to play. In the big rooms, though, you have so many respawns going sometimes that it ruins the fun of even playing, you’re so busy killing there’s no time to collect items and explore.

"it would have been a lot more reasonable to play"

Cool, I haven't ever noticed that difficulty affects lighting. Also one thing bothers me a bit. Has fast parameter on nightmare has always been there? Maybe it's just time, but I have strong feeling that first times I played Doom I just thought nightmare is same as ultraviolence, but with respawning enemies which made it unfair to me and lost interest quickly because of that. Just that fast parameter seen these days seem so damn obvious. Especially that missile speed. It's something that can't be unseen now. Then again with that 486/33 Cyrix chipped pc it looked fairly different than these ports with much greater frame speeds. Iirc vanilla was capped to 30fps anyway.

All 4 explanation vids currently existing on this channel are great. The most awesome and informative for me is doom RNG explanation, my comprehension of doom game mechanics grew up exponentially, especially useful for comprehending what do people do in TAS runs. I hope to see more of skillful walkthroughs from both of you guys. And if you are interested in explanation video idea: it might be doom movement bible or something like that
A cool thing I have noticed in terms of Ultimate Doom's episodes is that each episode seems to relate to each difficulty setting. Episode 1 being at the top and being the easiest. Episode 2 ramping up in difficulty. Continues on to the episode 3 being harder and relating to "Hurt Me Plenty". Episode 4, "Thy Flesh Consumed" was the hardest and is in the same number down the list as Ultra-Violence. Sigil is the hardest of the 5 episodes and relates with Nightmare setting and even has the same font. I wonder if this was intentional but still is a neat coincidence in itself.
It's probably an accident of New Game submenu coding. And Sigil's a PWAD episode.
I always like playing on higher difficulties, the highest difficulty is a matter of fact, but I really hate that last one whereas you put it the enemies just become turrets.
Give me faster demons, demons doing twice the damage, faster fireballs/missiles, but when you turn them into turrets (which is accurately describing your enemies at that difficulty level) then it completely changes the gameplay.
Before you could be engaged in battle with four enemies and a fifth enemy will quietly flank you or will go to cover behind a wall so you don't know where he's at then later surprise you and catch you off-guard. But in that last difficulty where they become turrets the majority of battles devolve into running around and killing them and maybe popping out of cover every 1/2 second or so but knowing exactly where an enemy will be relative to the room you're in because you know they're going to be firing at you, you have a clear line trajectory of where an enemy will be without even seeing him there in the room.
I just don't really care for it and I think it changes the gameplay too much to be easier in fact.
I've played Doom for years and honestly even Ultra Violence feels like easy mode. The NIGHTMARE! difficulty is where the real challenge is at.
Yep. Ultra violence with keyboard and mouse feels like playing with kids outside. With keyboard only, it's a few times hard. Actually, my childish fear for revenants and Archviles was because of "only keyboard" reasons.

Ha, I remember when I was about 7 years old playing the psx version. I would always select ultra violence because I thought it meant that there would be more blood and gore when I killed something, never thought that it corresponded to the difficulty. It took me ages to beat doom 1 and 2 back then, thought it was the most difficult game ever.
In hindsight it's the reason why I always play doom on uv since that intense difficulty is what has made doom doom for me!
You learn something new everyday, man! Still, I'm not sure how practical it is though.

I have been tinkering with my own difficulty categories in ZDoom-compatible source ports. It applies the Total Infighting, Slow Monster, No Pain State, Respawn, Increased Ammo Drop, and many other flags, plus altering the amount of Health creatures have or their Damage outputs, all across eight unique settings. One of them is "Night Train" and as the name implies, it's an Ultra-Violent variation where creatures respawn, but without the hyperactive aggression and with a time buffer so that it doesn't begin immediately--it is designed for really big custom maps where you are expected to backtrack.
That sounds cool. So far I've only tried the Ruthless and Savage custom difficulties on Glaice's RD&D mod. All they do is make enemies respectively 25% and 50% more likely to attack than move when Doomguy is in sight.
There's achievements on the 360 version of DooM/DooM2 where you need to beat the either a level, beat the game or a episode on Ultra Violence or higher.
That Doom 2: No Rest for the Living on ultra violence definitely feels like an endurance challenge when going for 100% everything

I always assumed the final secret in Map25 of Doom II was empty regardless of the difficulty, but now I know it has a BFG9000 in it on a difficulty easier than Ultra-Violence.
Ultra Violence -fast has been my favorite way to play Retro DooM Trilogy for the past number of years. Sometimes I gift myself slightly faster running speed when playing some custom wads (-turbo) but it's a great alternative to increase difficulty without having to deal with respawns.
The -fast switch doesn't just make enemies more aggressive and attack faster, it also gives them extremely increased pain recovery time and increased projectile speed (they attack faster and the fireball/rocket flies faster as well), so with certain enemies like shotgunner & chaingunner, you _really_ need to try to OHK (One Hit Kill) them or else they will have a "twitch" pain recovery and unload 3-4 more shots (shotgunner) in you before your reload animation is even finished from the shot that injured it in the first place.
I love this game (trilogy), been playing DooM since the shareware released in summer '93 and is the only game I have never stopped playing (I'd say I've played close to or slightly over 2000 video & pinball games since 1984).
An interesting video.
But if I'm allowed couple suggestions.. You could really use a better quality microphone. And that urine-colored background is very unpleasant for the eyes.
I really liked the video too, but I had to rewind several times to understand you. Other than that, no complaints here.
i like the yellow
It's a fresh, tasty lemon yellow, mate. It's all in the eye of the beholder.
Yeah the yellow is harsh on the eyes. The microphone seems fairly ok, I think the problem is that he records in an office or somewhere with no sound absorption. A common thing to do that has worked for me is to bring your duvet from your bed and put it over you and the microphone and you essentially make a mini recording studio.
I had to turn on the comments. It would also help if you articulated better and spoke up a bit. That said, your channel is one of my favourites, so please don't be discouraged.
Always thought it was cool to see the character portraits during the difficulty selection screen too, like in Wolfenstein and older CoD games. I remember back when I played Call of Duty Black Ops for the first time as a kid, I was so stupid that I thought choosing Veteran difficulty meant my in-game character would look like a skeleton. Safe to say that I didn't get past the first mission and had no idea why. But nowadays I think it adds character and some of the hardest difficulties are the most fun ones.

Thanks for the info! Been playing it, but never even thought of looking up the differences until now :)
I wish more games changed layouts and enemies with difficulty instead of just adding more health and damage
Videos about Doom, even something as basic as chosing the dificulty, i find them fascinating! i really wish you can continue making videos like this, because i literally want to know _all_ about Doom 1, 2 and Final Doom.
I play it since i was like 7, but i first saw Doom when i was like 5 - 6 years old, and i'm almost 25 years old now. I think childhood memories makes the biggest impact on us, maybe that's why i find Doom, Duke Nukem and Heretic so fascinating even till the day of today.
How did you get to know Doom, Decino?
I knew all of this, but favourited anyway.
Did this man just take e1m1 and map01 music and combine them? Brilliant!
Its doomsday my dudes
i appreciate the way theyre named. they give you a basic idea, without shaming you for picking something lower on the scale.
Yo yo yo hold up... Blood, why is there "Made to Order" difficulty. Is that Blood: Fresh supply or something?
Indeed it is. It's the custom difficulty level where you can tweak pretty much every aspect of the challenge individually.

'At Doom's Gate' mixed with 'Running from Evil' is the accurate definition of blursed.
Huh. So, there's a reason why I never noticed a difference between Too Young and Not Too Rough...
I still think there should be a difficulty named 'Tommy's Toys', in reference to an absolutely bonkerballs mega-series of DOS games that offer little to no sensibility other than you know that you're in for some wacky shit.
Is there another game you love as much as Doom? Your content is exhausting and much appreciated.
Not really. Doom spoiled me.
I know this comment was made 2 years ago but what else is there other than doom man at this point the name sells itself
@@witcherjohn3440For single player: Quake 1. For multiplayer: Quake 3/Live. 🥲
Doom has so many intricacies. I recently looked over and analyzed the audio logs in Doom 2016.
Did you know that Doom 2016 and Doom 1993 have basically the same story?
The Doom Slayer is also centuries old.
Lastly, his soul is stuck in a loop.
For a more detailed explanation I have a vid up on my channel covering the subject. 🤙
There is only two difficulty settings in Doom- Ultraviolence and Nightmare. Those other settings must be screen resolutions...actually, I find this video very interesting. I am a what you would call a Doom veteran that has been playing since 1994. I have played so many variants, wads, mega wads, unofficial map packs, official map packs that I couldn't tell you how much time I have put into the series. I have even played every single console iteration of Doom through to the end minus Doom for the Snes...I just can't do it. In all of that time I have never played Doom on anything lower than Hurt Me Plenty which used to be my preferred difficulty. I can't even tell you when I started considering Ultraviolence normal. I honestly never gave the difficulty much thought and I have learned quite a bit from this video.
The lowercase l in "Mein leben" really bothers me.
That's how it's written tho.
When people who've completed Doom on Nightmare enter class late, the teacher apologises for being too early.
I'm indeed too young to die. I'm 13
Go play fortnite bitch
On the playstation, it was:
I am a wimp
Hey, not too rough
Hurt me plenty
Ultra-violence
(Nightmare not available)
