  • If you own a Pi-Star hot spot, you know that you can use your phone as an internet connection. But did you know that you can directly wire the phone to your hotspot? All you need is a microUSB male to standard female adapter and one more program on the Pi-Star. See the post below for more info:

    And you don't have to have the iPhone on LTE/5G either. You can have it on wifi as I understand it. Do all modern iPhones work with OTG? I have a 2nd gen SE. Great video!

      @MarkWarrick  Před 3 lety +2

      Yes, you can connect a Zumspot or other device like this using your phone's hot spot via the phone's wifi. I can think of no reason why any iPhone would not connect with an OTG.

    Brilliant solution! I find that using the Wifi tethering technique very finicky also, and I hope your method will solve that problem!
    In my particular situation, I made my MMDVM hotspot out of a Raspberry Pi3. It has a micro usb for power, and then 4 other regular USB ports {type A?}. In your video, it looks like you are powering your hotspot with a separate power cable to the wall into a microusb port on the hotspot, and then using a second microusb port to connect your iphone. My raspberry pi only has the one microusb port for power. Therefore, I have no second microusb port to use in order to plug in the phone. Can I instead use a lightning to USB A cable to plug the phone into one of the USB A ports, and therefore not need the microUSB to USBA OTG adapter at all? Do you think that would work?
    Thank you so much for your help!

      Thanks so much for the reply! I ordered the cable and cant wait to try it. I also was not sure if the "OTG" type adapter was somehow special to this particular set up. I know I sound like, and actually am, a "newbie" at all this., so....thank you for your patience! Your blogpost link was also very helpful. @@MarkWarrick

      @@dpetervan in your case, you don't need the adapter. You're just using one of the USB-A ports on the Raspi 3 and a standard lightning cable. Be sure to do the command line instructions which are needed to activate USB as an ethernet adapter. km6zpo.com/tether-your-iphone-to-a-pi-star-for-a-more-reliable-connection/

      Yes!.. Thanks again. It took me awhile yesterday to figure out how to "SSH" into the Pi when only the Pi star image was loaded. I used "Putty". Low and behold, I successfully got to the command line prompt on the Pi! I was impressed with myself! LOL. I then entered the UN and PWD, and then your suggested commands
      rpi-rw
      sudo apt-get install usbmuxd
      and it returned something to the effect that it was already functional, so, I assume I should be good to go.
      I will follow up when I receive the cable and plug it in.....
      Thanks again!

      OK, tonight I ran the usbmuxd command, I plugged my phone into the USB A port on the pi. I turned off WiFi on the phone, and then turned off my wireless router just to be sure the Pi was not still using my home WiFi network.....and it indeed worked! I used "Parrot" successfully, and also connected to TG 91 worldwide. Very nice Mark!
      Next step is to see if I can take the Pi with me in the truck, connect it to my phone, and try operating mobile.
      Thanks again for posting this video!

    This video does not show how you connected the phone to the hotspot in pistar. I have a OTG cable hooked up to my pizero hotspot and iphone cannot seem to get it connected. Any tips?

    • @MarkWarrick
      @MarkWarrick  Před 2 lety

      Connection sharing on iPhone only works if your cell phone company allows it and you’re paying for it. In your iPhone settings, look for personal hot spot. Turn it on. If you don’t see that menu item, call your cell phone company to activate it. On e that is on, and the iPhone is connected to the pistar, reboot the pistar. It will automatically pick a DHCP address that your phone’s hotspot is giving out.

      @@MarkWarrick Yeah, this is a great concept! Except four raspberry Pi3's, two raspberry pi 4's, three raspberry pi zero's and not one will not connect to iphone consistently, or timely. Even if they connect, the connection is incredibly unstable- to the point of disconnecting from the iphone less than one foot away. After reading some forums with people who have the same issue, they said to use all lower case letters for the phone name and for the password. No numbers, capitals, and no special characters. I changed the name of my phone to "abcd" and changed the hotspot password to "kingking." Still, no connections. Your method will definitely work better. Thanks for posting it. 73

    Thanks for your sharing! I've tried your method but I may be mistaken. Could you please give me support? I have my iPhone 13 PM connected to my hotspot with a lightning cable. However, unlike your demonstration, I don't need an OTG adaptor to covert USB-A male to micro-USB male. Instead, the USB-A male from my lightning cable can be directly connected to the hotspot, that USB socket originally connected to a Wi-Fi dongle. Another micro-USB socket of the hotspot is for power supply and it has no big deal. After such connections are made, I turn on mobile data and tethering on my iPhone, and I wish to tether via USB, (and that's how the lightning cable works, right?). I've waited for about 15 mins but the display of my hotspot shows nothing. In this case I think it's searching for a network but in vain. Do you have any idea about this issue? TIA!

    Would this setup work with an ICOM ID-52a? As I understand it, you can use an Android as a hotspot but not an iPhone. I was thinking a Raspberry Pi or so either device would also it but can’t get an answer. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    How can I run the pi-star with my dmr or dual dmr/analog Hf radio and my iPhone 12 Pro to use APRS loft ATAK/ITAK on iPhone but also still be able to use my OPS-core AMP headset that’s connected to a u-94 port dual ptt v50 invisio ptt which then need to be run and connected to my Hd radio somehow.. but if the iPhone is plugged to the Hf tethered than I won’t be able to plug my AMP Ops-core headset into it…right? I want this to be All working together cohesively. Do I need to connect a BT capable and aprs capable hf radio to my iPhone via Bluetooth to keep the port open for my ptt/headset cables and then hook my PI-star hardwired /yethered to my iPhone for best connectivity? If I do and I push my headset ptt button on the invisio v50, Will whatever I say into my boom mic on my AMP headset be send through APRS TX properly, or no? Please help!! Thanks!!

      Your questions go way beyond what I can do for you via CZcams comments. I recommend talking to your local amateur radio club and getting yourself an elmer to help you out with all your questions. There are also a slew of amateur radio message forums, Facebook groups, etc. in each area you need help with. Good luck!

      Raspbery Pi's have a USB Micro input. The other end you connect to your phone's charger cable. This one would work: www.amazon.com/UGREEN-Adapter-Samsung-Controller-Android/dp/B00N9S9Z0G/?th=1

      Get USB female to Micro USB Male adapter. Connect your iPhone using the standard lightning to USB adapter into the female USB connector. Plug the male end into the micro usb port of the Raspberry Pi. Turn on your iPhone's hot spot. Reboot the PI. To figure out what IP the iPhone gave the Pi-Star, get an IP scan program for the iPhone.

    Doesn’t the phone try to power the pi? My hotspot would turn on when I tethered it to the phone.
    I then attached my hotspot to my car jack and tethered my phone to my hotspot wirelessly and it killed it. Too much power I guess. Not sure exactly. 😢 be careful. Not all ports are the same. 5v 2w isn’t much.

    • @MarkWarrick
      @MarkWarrick  Před rokem

      No. The phone isn't going to provide enough power for the Raspberry PI - even if it could I wouldn't recommend that. If you notice, there's a 2nd wire coming out of the PI - that's the power for the PI.

    • @MarkWarrick
      @MarkWarrick  Před rokem

      P.S. This configuration is for a wired connection, which is more reliable than wireless.

    • @kirksfilms
      @kirksfilms Před rokem

      Yep, I get it. I'm just saying that when I tethered it with the cable, the hotspot powered up. I didn't try to add the 2nd cable to the power port at that point. My intent was to use it wirelessly and power it via my car's phone charging port. The power must have been too much and it fried it, although the USB plug for my accessory port said it was 2w. I never had a chance to try it wired with a power cable. Looking for a replacement. It looks like they are 2x times as expensive as when I bought it in 2021.
