The Confusing HALL OF FAME Case of Chauncey Billups! Stunted Growth

- Chauncey Billups has to be the biggest example of both stunted growth and growth spurt, as that’s kinda how his career has played out. Perfectly on the fence of is he or is he not a hall of famer. I’ve seen many make the case why he should be a hall of famer, and also cases as to why it hasn’t happened yet, and a few that say eventually one day he’ll get in, he has to right. Well ask Damian Lillard and he’s confused as to why his former head coach isn’t in after all these years as well. Since 2018 Chauncey Billups has been eligible for the Naismith basketball hall of fame and every year he’s been passed on and many don’t understand why. Today I’ll give you 3 of the biggest reasons Chauncey Billups should be but is not a hall of famer, while also explaining the most important reasons he’s been passed on all these years. One thing we know for sure though, is Chauncey Billups was one of the best point guard of his era, catching his stride after a few difficult adjustment years in the NBA. 5 to be exact, and 4 different teams before he signed with the Detroit Pistons for a bargain 5 year 35 million dollar contract. We all know how it went from there. He became a 5x all star, NBA champion and finals MVP, led his team to 6 consecutive conference finals and back to back NBA finals in 04 and 05, defeating a juggxrnaught early 2000s Laker team that won 3 straight from 99-00 to 01-02. That gave Chauncey Billups the juice to even say he belongs in the hall of fame alone. Top it off he was awarded the finals MVP, one of only 2 point guards to win a championship and finals MVP of his era. Here are 3 reasons Chauncey Billups still hasn’t been named a hall of famer. The Confusing HALL OF FAME Case of Chauncey Billups! Stunted Growth

How long before they Let Chauncey in?
3-4 Years
I dont think he cares anymore
John Wallace Joe barry Carol Elton Brand Raef Larentz and Drew Gooden are suggestion
Bro rip had worse numbers than Chauncey in the finals overall only scoring was comparable but the shooting % wasn't
A great video! It proves that hall of fame voting is not set in stones I do look at the basketball hall of fame with less reverence because of how it lets in ppl who really don’t fit that standard. And in Chauncey’s case it’s very confusing. He prob is a boderlkneline candidate. I actually like how you point out he was overshadowed by guys like iverson and kidd (both of whom should not have been in the hall-iverson because while he was fun was extremely overrated-kidd because of him being a cancer in the clubhouse and his domestic violence conviction ). So that should raise his profile as a candidate.
However…the cons you pointed are equally strong.
He’ll prob get in eventually, I mean Yao Ming is in the hall!
Aint nothing confusing about Chauncey he a legend and a Hall Of Famer.
Nah
I telling you lol
Nah
Nah
He is and so is iggy
Chauncey is a better/more impactful player than a lot of HOFers. Those nuggets teams don’t have the success they had without Chauncey. 5 All Stars, 3-All NBA, 2 All Defense, a ring, and Finals MVP. Hes getting in
He gets in....the Finals MVP settled that for me. Iggy says he isn't....he gets in too at some point.
Chauncey is my personal, all time favorite pg. His on court, demeanor, ability to run a team, defend his position, and just being a leader have always stuck out to me as a Piston fan. Once he found his grove, he always made the team he was on better. Needless to say, he's a HOF in my eyes and will definitely be in that group soon enough.
When I think about Chauncey, I think about Kyle Lowry, who had a very similar trajectory. It took both of them a while to become impact players, but, both eventually did, and I think both will be and should be HOFers.
I’d luv to see a stunted growth story on Carlos boozer dude was pretty good early on but his game fell off way too quickly
I'm so glad you posted this.. me and another dude was going at it in one of your previous vids about this, Chauncey B. specifically. Just because ur a great player doesn't mean u couldn't have been better or that your growth wasn't stunted
Chauncey Billups is probably the greatest example of why being in the right situation is at least as important if not even more important, to reaching your full potential as a player, as having the talent and skills to do so. Chauncey bounced around the league and found a bit of success in Minny with KG, but was considered a disappointment if not a bust, until he got to Detroit and LARRY BROWN. IMO, Larry Brown is the greatest coach in the history of basketball. EVERYWHERE he's gone, college or pros (except for that dumpster fire with the Knicks in 04-05 and early 80's stint with Jersey) he's not only won, but changed the entire culture of his teams. David Thompson, Reggie Miller, Allen Iverson and Chauncey Billups all had some there greatest success under Brown.
Back to Billups, once he was able to learn how to play the PG position the right way, the winning way, under Brown, peaking at being the FMVP of the 04 NBA championship against the Shaq/Kobe Lakers, Billups was a HOF level player for the remainder of his prime. When he got traded to the underachieving, undisciplined Nuggets for Allen Iverson in the 08-09 season, he LED that team (even tho Melo was the best player) to a WCF appearance in which they likely would have won the whole thing if it wasn't for that guy they called Mamba in LA.
Chauncey was that guy back in the day he came up found his game got with the right organization & the rest is history
If Tracey Mcgrady made it Chauncey Definitely deserve to be in there HOF
I don’t see the comparison at all. Tmac is a 7x all star/ 7 all nba (2x 1st team), 2x scoring champion
PLUS T-MAC ALSO WAS GOOD ENOUGH TO COME STRAIGHT FROM HIGH SCHOOL!!!
T-Mac lead the League in scoring multiple times, and was only slowed by injury. Mac was way better than Chauncey
@@33greenleaf 💯
@@33greenleaf Facts! Comments like that prove to me that these people didn’t actually watch Tmac back then
And Rip did not out perform Chauncey in the finals or the season. As a dir hard Piston fan just cause you average more points than another player doesnt mean you out performed another person on your team. We had a coach in Larry Brown that was super focused on the pg position when he was coaching us. Larry was on Chauncey every second which was what had made Chauncey a greater player. He would be all over Chauncey for looking for his offense instead of setting other players up. If he had a coach who was more pg friendly Chauncey would have easily averaged more points when he was in Detroit. It was a different time in basketball and not like it is today with pg doing whatever. I feel Marbury, Gilbert Arenas, and Stever Francis with the help of the legend Allen Iverson help usher the ear of the pg averaging more points than everybody and having the ball all the time is what helped the pg be able to score more without being looked down upon because historically in the game the pg was suppose to facilitate. Chauncey played a role in the pg being more of a threat offensively and being able to shoot more shots with his emergence and play in Minnesota and Detroit.
Hall of Famer with work ethnic Finals MVP,All Star,,all defensive, pure point guard skills,Bog Uncle,Late Bloomer,My Man Detroit Basketball!!!!!
Finals MVP alone should get most people in but his resume speaks for itself
I think a fmvp or MVP is auto Hof
What’s with the video guy disrespecting Tony Parker.. @2:03 he calls him “some French guy” wtf 🤨
@holdmyweight3597 sarcasm
Chauncey deserves almost as much credit for taking Denver from a first round playoff team to a contender immediately.
Another great vid.
If Detroit drafts anyone but darko hed probably have multiple rings
Swear! Him being in the HOF wouldn’t even be a question.
Passing on Melo was crazy
They probably would down the road but they probably don't win in 04. Sheed was the missing piece and they probably not trading for him if Darko not a bust or if they had somebody else like Melo or Bosh
@@33greenleafpassing on Wade too. Imagine that five and then D-Wade as the Sixth Man! They lost to the Spurs in seven in 2005 but they definitely beat them with Wade.
@@philipcallado5693 yeah Wade and Bosh were better choices than Darko
People forget he balled with the Timberwolves in the season before he came to the Pistons. And showed great promise with the Wolves when he became a free agent in the playoffs which is what made the Pistons sign him.
He not a hall guy. Absurd talk
@@lordoffaiyum9727 Why not? If guys like Mitch Richmond, Tim Hardaway, Vlade Divac are in the hall, he has a case
@@holdmyweight3597 none of those guys should be in especially Divac, that's ridiculous for him to be in. At least Hardaway and Richmond were star players, but Divac was never a star player.
@@rooseveltdarbey9493 Yeah that’s my point. Even if you don’t think they deserve to be in, they still are. Which is why Billups should get in
@@holdmyweight3597 dude is a pacers fan 😂😂😂
That explains his idiotic opinion
Appreciate this man 💯💯💯
Karl Malone waited 6 yrs because at the time of his induction 6 yrs was the required wait time. I don't think it's his sexual misconduct allegation with Chauncey though. He may have to wait similar to guys like Paul Westphal and Bob Dandrige
He retired in 2014… almost 10 years
Malone got in first try. Back than you had to wait 6 years.
Another great video! Salute 🫡
Billups has the same problem Kevin Johnson has with getting in hall of fame with the allegations.
Never heard of it? Provide the source?
@@vittiriowashington5211 You must be really new if you’re unfamiliar with Billups allegations. There was a big uproar before him being coached as the blazers
@holdmyweight3597 I'm 42 what's wrong with you "youtubers" and the whole you must be new, young, etc.. He literally had no case, strictly allegations... How in the hell is a head coach?? Google the man's catalog.. He is HOF worthy from high school to the league... It's undisputed sheesh... peace man
The first three minutes are wasted rehashing the same point. I'd go with: Here's three reasons why they should induct Chauncey Billups and three reason against. Add in Damian Lillards two cents and move onto the featured content already. Whenever I'm buttonholed by a person with this tendency, I tune out immediately. You're just flapping your gums to me.
Facts I just be at work bored listening to this barbershop gibberish 😂
Bro just yapping 😂😂😂
And Tony Parker was not a better player than Chauncey numbers lie. Numbers say that James Harden is greater and better than Tracy Mcgrady and I feel that T Mac is greater and better than Harden even with Hardens stats and awards.
Harden did more. T-mac never forced the prime Lakers to game 7 like Harden forced the prime Warriors.
Bro, ain't nothing confusing about his resume. 100% hof
BEING THAT CHAUNCEY WAS "THE ENGINE" IN THAT CHAMPIONSHIP RUN, HE SHOULD GET IN....TRUE FLOOR GENERAL
Longevity 5 all stars a ring and finals MVP sound like a solid resume to me. Only knock against BIG would be the fg percentage
Fg percentage?? Lol he has a higher percentage than JKidd. That didn’t stop him making the hall 😂
It’s his start that keeping him out , he was an after thought, almost considered a disappointment until he got to Detroit. Makes you question whether it was because of the team more so him why they won. I loved him, great floor general who got better as the game went away from more traditional point guards… hit some big shots .
Exactly 💯 I don't think he's a Hall of Fame player, he was a good star role player. Not a superstar NBA player.
What about Kyle Lowry. I’ve heard Raptor fans say he’s the Goat raptor and a future hall of famer?
He'll be a part of this year's HOF class. Congratulations.
Billups was my favorite player on the 2000s and I'm not from Detroit. The 04 finals is still one of the most memorable for me and Mr. Bigshot just always made the right play. He could've averaged over 20 pts per game in multiple seasons of his career but he would look to let others get their shine for the betterment of the team. It was always team first with Chauncy.
That was a good episode!!! I always liked Billups and think he should be HOF! Didn’t know anything about that incident in Boston. Aside from that he should be given his props!!! 🙏🏼😎👍🏽
Suggestion: Sidney Moncrief. Career too short? He certainly played well enough to be in the HoF
I think he just got inducted last year.
@@akeme25 oh man, he did in 2019! It just took forever and I didn’t realize it
Sid and Paul Westphal took forever to get in because each had only about 5 full outstanding seasons. Longevity issue. However, they were definitely elite in their prime. Billups was never elite.
Wow didnt realize he was a 5-time All-Star, even 2 times when he was with Denver
You must have not been watching back then 😂
@holdmyweight3597 no I was, I just have shitty memory lol. I mean I remember his All-Star years with Detroit, when they whole starting lineup minus Prince were All-Stars, I just don't remember his All-Star years with Denver. I also remember thinking how Detroit won big with the trade getting Iverson, but obviously not lol
Big shot gonna get in . Ay JC can you do a video on trey Langdon (Alaskan assassin)?
Chauncey Billups is one of those examples of a player exceeding his potential. He was never suppose to be as good as he was but his work ethic pushed him to be a top guard in the mid 2000’s.
But he *was* supposed to be as good as he was. He was the third pick in the draft. When you're drafted that high, you're expected to be a Hall of Fame player. It took for the right situation, but he eventually got it done. He's going to be in, and I'm surprised he isn't in already.
Chauncey was a WELL ROUNDED do it all high quality basketball player. He had great vision, could shoot, drive, and a strong defender. Even though he played at a VERY high level he was never THE BEST shooter, driver, scorer, defender, and while his overall impact was high... he just didn't have the Super Star impact that garners HoF votes. (He is one of my current favorite PG's)
Agree. I liked him in college and was happy Celtics got him. Was pissed when we moved him. He is not a hall of famer
So b/c Chauncey was more of a team player & not a selfish, ball hog stat padder like others who were inducted in the HOF before him, he's a tentative selection even though he was a winner & consistent leader & his affect cannot be measured only in physical data...So i wonder why Tom Chambers & Antawn Jamison haven't been selected although some women were ahead of them. The politics in these sports leagues disgust me!
It's The Hall of Fame not The Hall of Good 🏀
*Nah, not every star deserved to be in the Hall of Fame, and he is one of them.*
It was announced today (April 3rd 2024) that both Chauncey Billups and Vince Carter have been elected for the hall of fame. Congratulations to both of them. Well deserved!
Success as a Coach can help solidify
It took Maurice Cheeks 30 plus years to get in the Basketball Hall of Hall; Chauncey Billups should have no teeth using a walker if he goes in.....
I like to think that he had a similar impact with his leadership and basketball IQ, that has currently kept Chris Paul relevant in the league. Personal stats don't really tell the whole story, it's the teammate's and team stats he impacted more through being a Floor General.
He was no where on CP level
@@benziahbrown7111 Never stated he was on his level. Since deciphering context seems to be lacking for some, I'll be a little clearer: I'm referring to the TYPE of value he brought, not the SAME amount of value. It's just like when people used to always comp other players to MJ and say, "He's a poor man's version of Jordan". They just referring to the style or play, not how good he is. Billups' value was being a floor general more than filling stats, much the same as CP does now in his advanced age.
@@benziahbrown7111or several other's.
I was a Nets fan in the Jason Kidd era. We were always scared to play Chauncey’s Pistons.
Well done as usual!!
It's the NAISMITH BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME - not NBA.... of course he should be inducted. It's about the body of work, High School - College and Professional
Great video but you got the The Mailman part wrong. 6 years was the time for retired hoopers to wait to be inducted. It was shortened twice since he got inducted.
The 2004 Detroit Pistons starting 5 should be in the HOF... For achieving the impossible.💪🏾
I had forgotten all about that incident.
I’d take Chauncey Billups over Chris Paul any day of the week.
Wtf
Chauncey Billups is top 10 to top 15 PG of all time. Yao Ming is in the HOF. Chauncey Billups is definitely a HOF.
Yao really is in because of the global impact he had...He has good numbers, but I'd agree, not HOF numbers, and didn't have one ounce of team success.
My Dawg Big Shot!💪🏿✊🏿💪🏿✊🏿.
My favorite player
Mr. Big Shot… The Legend.
It took me Years to Appreciate his Game, but Homie was Extra Smooth with his Campaign.
I will take that Detroit Championship Team Over Many Dudes Favorite Teams.
Big Ben was the Big Man Killer. Silent Assassin.
Rip was always Poetry in Motion. This about Chauncey Tho…
Salute to Him and the Guys.
Best Version, Detroit.
He wasn’t as efficient as you’d think he was
Great point guards were not valued during his era, especially after the Isaiah Thomas disrespect, Magic set aside in basketball & the rise of the shooting guard leading to chips. That's all
Simplest case: when he was traded to Denver, for a short while, the Nuggets became actual contenders (and yes, before the Jokic era)
He should get in. If Mo Cheeks can get in, then Mr. Big Shot can get in!
Chauncey is in. Nice. Well deserved. Congratulations.
Aka Mr.Big shot💯
I’m a little biased because I’m from Detroit but die heart Kobe and Laker fan. He never shied away from the big moments or the biggest moments moments. Let him in
Do Rawle Alkins
Three's no confusion his an hall of famer period.
Sorry Chauncey is not a Hall of Famer If you have doubts then he shouldn't get in
He's going in with Vince. Two players that played with Raptors
Karl Malone had much more than “allegations”.
now we need a zhaire smith stunted growth
He was my favorite player
I don't think he deserves it. He's a shueting first PG and never got 20 PPG! There were also plenty of opportunities to score: Two starters were not even scorers(Prince and Big Ben) and they were a low scoring team, too! With that not being true(ever getting 20 PPG), what about assists? He only got 8 assists once in a long career and I do not think he got close to that again. He also was not a defensive player or steal guy(like Iverson). Finals MVP is subjective and it should be clear for that to count. I do think his MVP was controversial! He was a great and clutch shueter, but he's got a whole, whole lot going against him on the court! I enjoyed and liked him a lot as a player, but--like Deion once said--if you have any tangible doubts, pass on that guy!
Rick Pinto was not the right guy to coach the Celtics when he took the job he felt that he had to trade Chauncey for veteran experience to boost a playoff run, and it blew up in his face in his first year. If he kept Chauncey, and let him develop then I can see himself Pierce, and Walker winning a championship in Boston
CHAUNCEY BILLUPS SHOULD BE IN THE HALL OF FAME= NBA FINALS MVP. STEVE NASH IS IN THE HALL OF FAME, BILL BRADLEY IN THE HALL OF FAME, CALVIN MURPHY IS IN THE HALL OF FAME, MO CHEEKS IN THE HALL OF FAME, TIM HARDAWY SR IN THE HALL OF FAME..
All the above guys are better than Chauncey, aside from Bradley.
@@Amick44 I WOULD NOT AGREE THAT CALVIN MURPHY WAS BETTER THAN CHAUNCEY BILLUPS
@@BLACKMAAT well that is your choice. However, I will say Calvin opened the door for all little men. Particularly in his era in the 70s. He went up against Frazier, West, Maravich, Bing, JoJo White. and he held his own and more.

Chauncey is a FIRST ballot HOF, a quenessential point guard and a impeccable floor general. His HOF status should be unquestioned.
Maybe not 1st ballot but he’ll get in
Chauncey balled out in his career. I don't see how he's a stunted growth.
Vlade Divac should not be In the hall of fame. Chauncey Billups will be in the hall of fame
Chauncey is a greater overall player than Andre Igloudala. He did a magnificent job in the finals and was a great glue player. He did spectacular in the finals with his role but he was not greater or better than Chauncey for his career.
I'm confused, is the hof just for individual accolades 🤔 Billups was an exceptional pg on a championship team. That offence was built around Rip coming off a million picks hitting the middy and occasional three.
He should been in the HOF sooner!
Definitely should be in the hall of Fame
That stunt #2 heavy.. can't be fnckin' around, in e'erbody else situation, doing what e'erbody else be doing... That ish never ends well.
I make deliveries to his house here in Portland. His wife is a sweetheart.
A superb player, but not a HOF'er. Too many early years where he wasn't great. Overall, his stats don't jump out at you. For him to be in, he would have had to have won at least two or three rings.
😆
Right. I think of him as simply a good player. Solid contributor on a winning team. And it took him a while to get going.
When Billups went to Detroit, he was in the perfect system and Larry Brown utilize him better
CHAUNCEY BILLUPS SHOULD WON MVP ..... BEATING PRIME SHAQ AND KOBE IN NBA FINALS 🤦🔥🔥🤦
i’m a chauncey fan but he’s not making my hall of fame. he was mister big shot but missed a lot. kinda streaky
Former "Toronto Raptor "
Pete Maravich would be nice to cover.
Bruh they letting anybody in at this point. D Rose better get in smdh
Stunt #2 is for sure the reason they're making him wait. Tim Hardaway had to wait for so much longer than he should have because he had that homophobic rant decades ago. For better or worse basketball is by far the most image-sensitive, politically correct sport out there, and that absolutely affects who gets to get in the HOF. I have no idea whether there's any truth behind the allegations, but outside of that he's been a model player and citizen in general. It's stupid to punish him over something that he was never even charged with.
This is interesting, because you're definitely right about BBall being so image conscious. Kobe got inducted early because of the tragedy, but I wonder if he had lived if the HOF would've made him wait....especially since what happened with him went WAY further than what happened with Chauncey. Would've been interesting to see.
Nothing is confusing about Chauncy Billups. He is HOF.
I think having Finals MVP on your resume should be a shoe-in for HOF. Yes, even Cedric Maxwell
Controversial, but: Chauncey > AI
There are definitely people with worse reps that are in the hall of fame
Bro Billups is NO QUESTION A HALL OF FAMER!!! Especially since in my opinion they have WATERED DOWN THE HOF ANYWAY, bruh they let Tony Kukoc in so based on that Billups should Most Definitely be in!!!
Kukoc is in for international play as well. As is Divac, Yao Ming and some other's.
Well @amick they should just invent a nba hof becauee yea it’s ridiculous!!! And I feel you on the international stuff but I still don’t think it’s enough for Tony to be in!! But aye that’s my opinion 🤷🏾♂️
I feel like he definitely deserves hall of fame
He was never the best PG in the league at any time
Rick Pitino really tried to ruin my boy
Malone had a kid with a young teen of about 14yrs old...so how is Chauncey's situation worst?
Chauncey ain't do nothing to that girl. HOFer all day in my book.
If Avery Johnson made the HOF Chauncey is a shoe in ❤️ nothing confusing about that !
Avery not in the HOF 🤣
