The Confusing HALL OF FAME Case of Chauncey Billups! Stunted Growth

  • Chauncey Billups has to be the biggest example of both stunted growth and growth spurt, as that’s kinda how his career has played out. Perfectly on the fence of is he or is he not a hall of famer. I’ve seen many make the case why he should be a hall of famer, and also cases as to why it hasn’t happened yet, and a few that say eventually one day he’ll get in, he has to right. Well ask Damian Lillard and he’s confused as to why his former head coach isn’t in after all these years as well. Since 2018 Chauncey Billups has been eligible for the Naismith basketball hall of fame and every year he’s been passed on and many don’t understand why. Today I’ll give you 3 of the biggest reasons Chauncey Billups should be but is not a hall of famer, while also explaining the most important reasons he’s been passed on all these years. One thing we know for sure though, is Chauncey Billups was one of the best point guard of his era, catching his stride after a few difficult adjustment years in the NBA. 5 to be exact, and 4 different teams before he signed with the Detroit Pistons for a bargain 5 year 35 million dollar contract. We all know how it went from there. He became a 5x all star, NBA champion and finals MVP, led his team to 6 consecutive conference finals and back to back NBA finals in 04 and 05, defeating a juggxrnaught early 2000s Laker team that won 3 straight from 99-00 to 01-02. That gave Chauncey Billups the juice to even say he belongs in the hall of fame alone. Top it off he was awarded the finals MVP, one of only 2 point guards to win a championship and finals MVP of his era. Here are 3 reasons Chauncey Billups still hasn’t been named a hall of famer. The Confusing HALL OF FAME Case of Chauncey Billups! Stunted Growth

A great video! It proves that hall of fame voting is not set in stones I do look at the basketball hall of fame with less reverence because of how it lets in ppl who really don’t fit that standard. And in Chauncey’s case it’s very confusing. He prob is a boderlkneline candidate. I actually like how you point out he was overshadowed by guys like iverson and kidd (both of whom should not have been in the hall-iverson because while he was fun was extremely overrated-kidd because of him being a cancer in the clubhouse and his domestic violence conviction ). So that should raise his profile as a candidate.
However…the cons you pointed are equally strong.
He’ll prob get in eventually, I mean Yao Ming is in the hall!

Chauncey is my personal, all time favorite pg. His on court, demeanor, ability to run a team, defend his position, and just being a leader have always stuck out to me as a Piston fan. Once he found his grove, he always made the team he was on better. Needless to say, he's a HOF in my eyes and will definitely be in that group soon enough.

Chauncey Billups is probably the greatest example of why being in the right situation is at least as important if not even more important, to reaching your full potential as a player, as having the talent and skills to do so. Chauncey bounced around the league and found a bit of success in Minny with KG, but was considered a disappointment if not a bust, until he got to Detroit and LARRY BROWN. IMO, Larry Brown is the greatest coach in the history of basketball. EVERYWHERE he's gone, college or pros (except for that dumpster fire with the Knicks in 04-05 and early 80's stint with Jersey) he's not only won, but changed the entire culture of his teams. David Thompson, Reggie Miller, Allen Iverson and Chauncey Billups all had some there greatest success under Brown.
Back to Billups, once he was able to learn how to play the PG position the right way, the winning way, under Brown, peaking at being the FMVP of the 04 NBA championship against the Shaq/Kobe Lakers, Billups was a HOF level player for the remainder of his prime. When he got traded to the underachieving, undisciplined Nuggets for Allen Iverson in the 08-09 season, he LED that team (even tho Melo was the best player) to a WCF appearance in which they likely would have won the whole thing if it wasn't for that guy they called Mamba in LA.

And Rip did not out perform Chauncey in the finals or the season. As a dir hard Piston fan just cause you average more points than another player doesnt mean you out performed another person on your team. We had a coach in Larry Brown that was super focused on the pg position when he was coaching us. Larry was on Chauncey every second which was what had made Chauncey a greater player. He would be all over Chauncey for looking for his offense instead of setting other players up. If he had a coach who was more pg friendly Chauncey would have easily averaged more points when he was in Detroit. It was a different time in basketball and not like it is today with pg doing whatever. I feel Marbury, Gilbert Arenas, and Stever Francis with the help of the legend Allen Iverson help usher the ear of the pg averaging more points than everybody and having the ball all the time is what helped the pg be able to score more without being looked down upon because historically in the game the pg was suppose to facilitate. Chauncey played a role in the pg being more of a threat offensively and being able to shoot more shots with his emergence and play in Minnesota and Detroit.

I don't think he deserves it. He's a shueting first PG and never got 20 PPG! There were also plenty of opportunities to score: Two starters were not even scorers(Prince and Big Ben) and they were a low scoring team, too! With that not being true(ever getting 20 PPG), what about assists? He only got 8 assists once in a long career and I do not think he got close to that again. He also was not a defensive player or steal guy(like Iverson). Finals MVP is subjective and it should be clear for that to count. I do think his MVP was controversial! He was a great and clutch shueter, but he's got a whole, whole lot going against him on the court! I enjoyed and liked him a lot as a player, but--like Deion once said--if you have any tangible doubts, pass on that guy!

Rick Pinto was not the right guy to coach the Celtics when he took the job he felt that he had to trade Chauncey for veteran experience to boost a playoff run, and it blew up in his face in his first year. If he kept Chauncey, and let him develop then I can see himself Pierce, and Walker winning a championship in Boston

Stunt #2 is for sure the reason they're making him wait. Tim Hardaway had to wait for so much longer than he should have because he had that homophobic rant decades ago. For better or worse basketball is by far the most image-sensitive, politically correct sport out there, and that absolutely affects who gets to get in the HOF. I have no idea whether there's any truth behind the allegations, but outside of that he's been a model player and citizen in general. It's stupid to punish him over something that he was never even charged with.

    • @elliemyers6435

This is interesting, because you're definitely right about BBall being so image conscious. Kobe got inducted early because of the tragedy, but I wonder if he had lived if the HOF would've made him wait....especially since what happened with him went WAY further than what happened with Chauncey. Would've been interesting to see.
