Good, informative video. I did want to clarify one thing you said at 2:06: "So these new compositions are 75% copper--that's the inside core of these--and then 25% nickel." Actually, the inner core is 100% copper, with the outer layer being 75% copper and 25% nickel. 🙂

Silverhound, love your video's. I would imagine the coins struck on wrong planchets, thinner, silver, etc. would also weigh differently. The last one on this video shows 11.3G so assuming it weighs more than a normal 71 half. If true would be nice if you mention the weight difference as another sanity check., Thanks again :)

Do you ever get any replys? I don’t, I just sent another message with my Two 1971D Kennedy half dollars in fine shape for $10,000 each then the coin person Sean or whatever his name is can sell for $13,500 each or higher, in any event he could make over $3,500 per coin= $7,000 is easy money, but if he is a con man he won’t respond, like last week & most likely not again today Jan 23, 2023 . I think your coins would be much more valuable than mine. These utube coin channels should have buyers ready to buy or at least contact. People on this site want to sell but don’t know who to contact, so why can’t you have sells, buyers, sellers offering to buy once weekly. It would help your channel be the first to offer seller, buyers a chance to buy. Joseph

Ok so if your looking for a transitional error on the kennedy, the copper nickel clad weighs around 11.34g and the 40% silver weighs around 11.44g.... So looking for these by weight is going to be super hard, am I right here? I mean would the easiest thing to do is save up several you want to check and have one of the cash for gold an silver places check it? I know theirs a gravity test but whats the best and easiest way(free) to check one to be a transitional error. I have had several of this date and traded or what not on them but I'd admit I would love to find a transitional error 1965 coin. Now the 1983 penny weight wise seems a little more straight forward to find(been checking my old bank paper coin holders with several 1981-1984 cuz I collected them that same year when I was like 5 years old in 1983, several great MS 82's and 83's in penny), but how's the best way for regular joe to check the 1965 with someone thats going to be able to tell you absolutely if its from a silver planchet...Luv the coins and the history, thanks for any real replies....
So gravity test from a good coin dealer will tell 100% for sure....?...

Howsit EJ, a Sound test will work.
Take two half dollars and lightly spin them on a wood table so they make that end of the spin sound on the table. (I’m going to make a short on how to do this without damaging a coin.). A silver coin will sound completely different. Test yours with one you know is clad. If it has a higher pitch then the clad coin, it could be silver.
You can also hold it between your thumb and finger right in the center of the coin, very tightly and flick it with your other hand. This is called a Ping Test.
The best way to identify silver from clad coins is by how they sound. A lot of times we used to notice silver just by the sound of it jingling in pocket change.
You can also look at the reeded edge. A silver coin will look all silver, while a clad coin will show copper on the rim.
You can take it to a coin shop, they usually has a silver tester and can accurately let you know if it’s really silver or not.
Hope that explains it man, Goodluck!

    Hi Shawn,
How can I verify if I have a silver planchet, Kennedy Half? I have a 1971 D Kennedy Half that weighs 13.1 G. Are there other ways to verify before I send it out to be graded?

I have a 1971 D Kennedy half dollar that is double die struck on the obverse as well as the reverse. Seriously, on the obverse, each letter is double struck..In God We Trust and Liberty, also the date...on the reverse, each letter in United States of America and half dollar are double struck. I found this coin in change. It is in great shape and I imagine if it were graded, It would be demanding a premium. Could it be the rarest of the rare?

I got $500 boxes of sorted half dollars. Are they worth anything special ? When I started looking for silver, I decided to set up a bunch of plastic cups with year dates on them. When the cups got filled, I rolled them up and filled the same boxes that came from the bank.. Now I got them burried in plastic totes out in the backyard. For the .5% interest the bank pays, it wasn’t worth taking them back. Know what I mean ?
