Armscor 22 Magnum Ammunition Review and Hunt Report

  • Through-out the recent shortage, the one brand of .22 magnum ammo that was consistently available was the Armscor .22 magnum, loaded with a 40 grain jacketed hollow point bullet. In order to complete a review and hunt report on the Armscor .22 magnum rimfire ammunition, I purchased a brick and shot it exclusively out of my Browning A-Bolt .22 magnum rifle. After some range time, I took this rifle up to Northern California to shoot Belding's Ground Squirrels, so we got first hand results on how this ammunition performs in the field on varmints. These are our results!

      I know this is a old thread but I wanted to recommend some 22 mag ammo to you - I tried every 22 mag ammo they make and to my surprise the Fiocchi shot the best they offer it in total metal jacket , soft points , and hollow points.. I site all my rimfires in with CCI ammo then test from there and the fiocchi 22 mag groups cut in half I went from roughly a 1 inch group to a 1/2 inch group at 100 yards

    Great vid and review. Was just in Cedarville last weekend. The alfalfa was a little high due to the rain they got, but I managed 90 for 160 with my .223 Rem using Nosler varmint tips 40 grain handloads at 3500fps. That'll reach out and touch em. I don't have a 22 mag, but it's on the list. I do have an Armscor (RIA) 45 acp and it's a good piece of kit. I imagine their ammo is just as good. Thanks for the report.

    Thanks Eric for another great video - we all appreciate your efforts in bringing us your reports.
    Now I think it's good to see someone using the older, less well loved 22 WMR. I thought your accuracy at 100yds was excellent as the 22WMR isn't renowned for super accuracy. At the time of writing I have just bought a Winchester 9422M so I was curious about how you liked the 22WMR round in general - there are of course the 17HMR group of shooter too. I have found the 17HMR very wind unfriendly and it's a pricey round for what it is.
    How about testing the Hornady 30 grain WMR or a CCI lighter bullet? I would love to have your opinion.
    Regards Mark

    • @varmintermagazine
      @varmintermagazine  Před 9 lety

      +leboucdetrambly - Hi Mark. Thanks for the kind words! My Browning A-Bolt .22 Mag is very accurate, so almost everything I shoot through it shoots well. I really like the .22 magnum, but with the shortage on ammunition the past couple of years, it has been hard to hunt with it, because I did not want to deplete the ammo I have. The Armscor ammo, and the recent availability of the Hornady 30 grain that you mentioned, has changed that. With regards to the 17HMR. I enjoy all my rimfires, and change which one I am shooting regularly. I think there are some things I would do with a .22 Magnum, that I may not do with a 17HMR (close-in coyote, for example), but it doesn't prevent me from finding time to shoot all of them. In fact, I just got some lead free Winchester .22 Mag ammo in, that I will be testing here in SoCal, so I will be shooting that a lot in about a month.
      I will definitely do something on the Hornady 30 grain bullet, as I had planned to use some of those in the spring for ground squirrels. Lastly, I have a buddy with a 9422, and it is a very slick little rifle. I think you will enjoy yours! - Eric

      +Varminter Magazine I appreciate that. Like all the good viewers out there we tend to have 'shall we say' more than one gun. The Win 9422 will just fill a slot in my list of desirable guns I'd like to own - I'll put a Leupold VX1 2-7x32 on it to keep it neat looking but still useful out to 100 yds.
      The supply and choice of all rimfire munition has been a real problem of late of course - added to the difficulties you have living in California with their 'made on the fly' laws.
      A good review of accuracy at 100yds with different branded 22WMR and 17HMR would be useful.
      I and others keep fighting for our shooter rights - here and everywhere, to own and use our guns without undue and unnecessary persecution by hoplophobes. Although I don't live in the USA, when I travel there I support you guys in any way I can. I'm a long time member of the NRA as well.
      Regards

    • @varmintermagazine
      @varmintermagazine  Před 9 lety

      +leboucdetrambly - I will be working on a lot more rimfire once I leave California, sometime next year (to Idaho). Speaking of California, and our lead free area, the Hornady 24 grain NTX (lead free), 22 Mag round was the best I've shot of all the lead free. Of course, with the issues of rimfire availability, Hornady put that round on hold until at least next year. It is an excellent round, that performed very well, so I hope it comes back.
      I appreciate the fight, and even after I leave California, I will be fighting for the hunters/shooters who I leave behind.
      I'll keep in mind your accuracy review idea! Thanks again! - Eric

Otherwise, try to find an Anschutz, or Browning A-Bolt out there. I have an A-Bolt, and it is the most accurate .22 magnum I've ever shot. Caveat is, magazines are hard to find, and go for upwards of $75 - $100 dollars. You really can't go wrong with any of the top gun maker's .22 Magnum rifles, I just really like CZs, and my Browning!

However, when I first got the rifle I used in this article, I also received a box of the RWS HP ammo, which worked out really well (it was expensive though). I then moved to the Federal ammo with the 30 grain Speer TNT bullet. That gave me excellent results, and was devastating on varmints. But, I had the same problem, I can't find any of that anymore either. Here is an article I did years ago using that ammo: www.varminter.com/getting-reacquainted-with-an-old-friend-the-22-magnum-by-eric-a-mayer/ - Eric

      Have you ever heard of "depth of field" with camera/video work? Those "cows" (which are actually Antelope) are about 2 miles away. In order to allow enough light into the lens on these early morning, or cloudy days, I have to open the f-stop in the camera (slower shutter speed). By doing this, it also increases the depth of field, so the camera is capturing everything behind the subject as well. This is why there are some landscape photographs that show the entire scene, from right in front of the camera, to mountains/desert/whatever that is miles away. The opposite happens if you close, or lower, the f-stop. The shutter speed is increased and the background becomes blurry. You can see this in outside portrait photography. Lastly, I've been hunting for 45 years and have never hit an animal I wasn't aiming at. Same goes with equipment. I'm not sure what experience you have, but I will take your rudeness this time, considering you are probably ignorant of the depth of field subject.

      @@randybichsel8954 - Yet, not one picture, or video, proving anything you said. Do you know how many guys like you I hear from saying the same thing? If all of you were really telling the truth, there would be no varmints left on the face of the earth. If you believe a 40 grain jacketed HP bullet being shot out of a .22 Magnum rimfire rifle going 1875fps can still travel two miles after a "ricochet", you are not only ignorant about depth of field, but also simple physics. Go yell at and shake your fist at the sky, maybe they will believe you.
