    Very effective shooting, to say the least. Franklin seems to have their stuff together in the making of this AR....looks nice to.
    I especially like they way you pin point your target with the red crosses just prior to executing the shot. Thanks for this.

    Nice to see that there is an option to the retched BMag by Savage. AR Semi-auto in 17WSM is a nice alternative to Volquartsen in 17hmr. However, for those that reload, the 17Hornet seems like a much better alternative with more range and loading options .... just no semi-auto. I will be interested to watch this little caliber and see if it survives. If so, guns like this will be a major reason. Thanks for the review. Burt

    Nice. I like the AR platform Franklin provides. I've never considered .17 before (I don't like .17 HMR), but I seriously want a Franklin upper in .17 WSM.

    • @varmintermagazine

      +Norman Kellison - After this review, I purchased an upper and absolutely love it. We will be getting in their new SPR upper in soon for another test, so it will be interesting to shoot a lighter version of the upper I currently own. Thanks!

    • @Red_Proton
      @Red_Proton Před 8 lety +1

      I've watched a number of your videos and I like what you produce. I'm curious if you have shared a video specifically covering the .17 WSM? If not, is it something you can consider?

    • @varmintermagazine
      @varmintermagazine  Před 8 lety +2

      +Norman Kellison - I actually own 17WSM.com, and have slowly been testing all the rifles that come chambered in the 17WSM caliber, with plans to add the information, as well as ammunition information, to the site. I will begin adding the information/videos come late January, into February. This should be something that will cover EVERYTHING about the 17WSM, including a bit of the history as well. So, in answer to your question, yes, there will be full coverage, dedicated only to the 17WSM coming soon! - I hope this is what you were asking about.

    Cool rifle for sure! I wanted one of these before they even had them! Do you think they hit hard enough for coyotes! Because even with a .223 you get some runners with a poor placed shot! But I guess if you hit a vital. That fast little round will do the job! Love to see some coyote hunts! Thanks for the awesome info and video!

    • @varmintermagazine
      @varmintermagazine  Před 10 lety +1

      Thanks for the kind words! I have shot two coyotes and a bobcat with the 20 grain .17WSM and all dropped quickly. Coyotes are tough animals, so shot placement is definitely really important when you are shooting a .17 caliber bullet, whether in the 17WSM or a .17 Remington! I'm going to try and do more coyote hunts, but in the meantime you can check out some of my results from last year here: www.varminter.com/forums/topic/16312-first-bobcat-and-coyote-fall-2013-17wsm/

    I dig the .17's, but upwards of $13-1500 for the rifle? I'll pass on that one. I can build two to three AR's and shoot it cheaper.

    • @miked0rris738
      @miked0rris738 Před 3 lety

      guarantee it can't shoot cheaper than a 17 with an AR you make that difference up in the price of the rifle in one shooting if you do a lot of shooting the difference between Rimfire and Centerfire is pennies to the dollar

    Well, I have to say that it does not seem the most accurate rifle I watched in your videos. I say so because I know you are a marksman. (I have watched all of your videos)
    Is it a blowback action carbine? Very beautiful weapon anyway and with such an interesting caliber in every aspect.
    Regards.

      @varmintermagazine  Před 10 lety

      Actually, the missed shot was my fault, no fault of the rifle! I estimated the distance incorrectly and held wrong. It is a gas-operated piston system, which is the first of its kind for a rimfire cartridge. Head over to my site and read the entire write-up, it has a lot more information in there that is not in the video! www.varminter.com/franklin-armory-f17-l-review-and-hunt-report/ - Thanks! - Eric

      @varmintermagazine  Před 9 lety

      Brennan Johnson - I would wait and see what comes out during the SHOT Show next month. I did not run into the issues others have with their B.MAGs, but Savage did make a change to the 1:8 twist in their newer rifles, so waiting a bit to pick-up one of those may not hurt. Lastly, I think $270 is a little steep in price, as you can find them for less out there. In the meantime, Franklin has released just their upper for the 17WSM and that is next in line for me to purchase!

  • @blave549
    @blave549 Před 9 lety +2

    Interesting, but here is what I'm wondering: at 30 cents or more per round, what's the advantage of this over .223? .17WMR involves buying a new gun (or at least AR upper?), and having to be at the mercy of whichever ammo mfr's are willing to mfr this new-fangled ammo. It's maybe 10 cents less per round than .223, but having to buy a new gun or upper will mean that a lot of rounds have to be fired to make the economics work out.
    Note: I'm pretty new to firearms in general, so hopefully my question isn't a dumb one ;^) .

    • @varmintermagazine
      @varmintermagazine  Před 9 lety +2

      No dumb questions here. You have some valid points. There are a lot of areas that require rimfire to hunt at night, or on certain public areas, especially during deer season. Quality .223 hunting ammunition is going to be more expensive than this, unless you reload. It's just handy to have a rimfire, where you can grab a box of ammo and go hunting! Lastly, this upper is just really fun! - Eric

    • @varmintermagazine
      @varmintermagazine  Před 9 lety +2

      ***** - True. For example, here in California, I can use this AR15 with no bullet-button to remove the magazine. It may seem like a small advantage, but when you are out shooting varmints in large number, digging around for a tool to release your magazine is the last thing you want to do. - Eric

      @bladesmilitariauk5013 Před 6 lety

      Excellent!
      These are legal in the UK because rim-fire. Our gun laws have some similarities to California, but we can have pretty much unrestricted accessories which includes bump-stocks, trigger mods, suppressors & unrestricted mag capacity so it makes sense why this 400ft. lb/3000fps rifle is desirable for gun people over here.
      We want to incorporate 150rnd drum mags, dual bump-stocks & binary 1.5lb triggers so we can get 900rpm in .17WSM for sporting use :-)

    • @varmintermagazine
      @varmintermagazine  Před 9 lety +1

      MrTriumph6661 - We have tree squirrels as well, but although these look like they could be tasty, they are definitely not something you want to eat. Besides the plague fact, they are also cannibalistic and their feces carries disease such as hantavirus. They are also very destructive to crops here in California, so we do our best to get rid of them for farmers! - Eric

  • @ringolapua8864
    @ringolapua8864 Před 9 lety +1

    What do you do with the squirrels you shoot? Do you skin them and eat them? If so, how do you prepare them and are they good to eat? Would be a shame to just let them rot.

    • @varmintermagazine
      @varmintermagazine  Před 9 lety

      Ground squirrels and prairie dogs are considered non-game animals and are not recommended for human consumption. They have fleas that carry the plaque, as well as other diseases. Nothing goes to waste in nature. Predators such as coyotes and bobcat feast on the non-game animals that are left in the field.

      I am still in a paradox about this gun. 20 gr shooting in the wind even at 2 kfps may cause me pause out over 100 yards. I am really looking into the CMR-30 in 22 mag. Not as fast but anything over 1.2 kfps at 30 to 50 gr has to be more stable out to 200 yards and pack more energy. My Father and I were avid Ground Hog hunters going back to the early 60s. Weapon of choice was the my Dads 22-250.. Awesome gun. I believe it was a Remington bolt action. Even at 55 gr these bullets were HOT HOT HOT. Somewhere around 3.5 kfps at the muzzle you dare not even hit a blade of grass or the bullet would just vaporize.
      My longest shot with that gun was 375 yards. The only part of the hog I saw was its head just out of the hole. That was all I needed. My Dad said I missed but I said NO WAY.. So I sprinted down and across that field and counted 425 steps. Yep, there it was. Hit it right in the mouth. My Father just shook his head and said Good Shot Son. Those were good times. I was 14, my Dad was 33 and we were hunting and fishing buddies 24/7. My Dad is now 82 and I 63. I wonder if Ground Hogs go to Heaven.

      +Willy Durf - Run ballistics charts on both rounds, and I think you will be surprised on the difference in drift between the two out at the 200 yard range. Because their is less surface area on the 20 grain bullet, and because its speed means less time for wind to "push" it. The .22 magnum goes much slower, so it will be affected more by wind and drift. Great shot on the ground hog (and I don't think they go to heaven)!

    Why are you killing these animals? Are you eating them? Trophy?

      They are considered varmints that do a lot of damage to the prairies where cattle and other livestock roam. If their numbers are not kept in check, they can spread quickly. Also, they carry fleas that spread disease. Nothing we left was wasted, as the predators will always come in and clean up the remains.
