  • The notorious samsung ice maker issue. They have had this issue going on for a few years now and it is now finally fixed. You just need an Ice maker kit for the repair. This will include silicone to seal the ice box, New ice maker to prevent water from over filling, drain tube for better drain, y-clips for better defrost, and a new board for a software update. The video covers everything you need to do and if you need parts you can find links for them below(affiliate links).

I called Samsung and complained and they sent a service guy out within a week and he replaced the ice-maker at no charge. My unit was out of warranty by over 3 years and I told them I hadn't had ice for almost 2 years and tried everything short of replacing it to get it to work. I think they realize they had a faulty unit and needed to stay ahead of any class action that in the conversation on the internet. Now I'm happy, happy, happy! Thank you Samsung, you really shined!

3 years years ago I reported this issue to Samsung they said they had not figured out how to fix this issue. Another tech told me the same thing and that Samsung had a class action lawsuit pending on this issue. Just today after I read your comment I called Samsung again and surprisingly they said they will replace the ice maker free of charge.

Solved the problem, mine has been icing up for as long as I've owned my Samsung. Followed the steps described in this video and my ice maker has been trouble free for several weeks. The steamer is the right tool for the job. Don't try anything else. I have a slightly different model than shown in the video, so the part numbers were a little different. I used a google search to find the part numbers. The process was the same and video really helped out. I get a little kick now every time I use the icemaker. Thank you.

I had this done when the fridge was still under warranty. The fix lasted about a year and it started to ice up again. I then ran across a post that said that the ice maker was re-designed a second time and this one was supposed to be the real deal. I confirmed that the part number was actually a newer number. Since it was no longer under warranty I bought the kit again replaced it all and it lasted another year before it started to frost up again.
So if you are looking for a permanent fix here is what you do. Throw the Samsung unit out and buy a different refrigerator.

Thanks for sharing. i was wondering if all of this was worth it. I've had my ice maker replaced and various pieces...sealed with silicon, sealed again with hvac tape, etc... nothing has worked for me. Now I need a control board v2 lol? Or set the temp of the fridge to 36F? All of these seem to be temporary fixes that prolong the inevitable.

Parts arrived. When I got to the Auger motor the original skinny tube and heater wire were surrounded by custom block of Styrofoam. I tried cutting out for the bigger diameter drain hose in the Sytrofoam, but eventually gave up and just removed it. Likewise I had to drill a hole on one side to route a cable tie. FYI: Drain did not come with a cable tie. I had plenty of my own though. I didn't have a mirror to check the input water tube. I tried using my smartphone on selfie as the camera is at the top but just couldn't get it so again the heck with it. Did the silicone around the edges. Everything is back together. We ended up buying a large ice chest and putting everything in the frig into it. Left the door and freezer alone. Frig is 55 degrees and freezer is 0 degrees and cooling. I'll give it a day and then a couple weeks and update you. Thank you so much for your You Tube.

Thank you so much! You video helped me so much. I live in Jamaica so we dont have access to experienced repair techs all the time. 26:24 I did have trouble installing the auger back into the fridge. What I ended up doing was taking a metal straw and putting it down the drip hole and just wiggling it back and forth until it slipped right in. It also let me know it wasn't lined up properly since the straw pushed out as i pushed the auger in. Thank you again for all your help!

Thank you thank you - Really appreciated all the detail, especially showing the difference between the new and old version of the parts (saved me some headaches when I received a 'new' kit part that was clearly the same as the original).
Beyond that - the fix has been working flawlessly...not sure what exactly did it, but I'm just so glad to pull out that (full) ice tray and not see a speck of frost or ice build-up ANYWHERE inside that ice maker chamber...it's heavenly. Many many thanks!

My Samsung 4 door was made in 2017. After months of defrosting, I finally got Samsung to come out and they replaced the ice maker around 2022. Seemed okay for about 3-4 months then started forming ice again. I also had ice forming in the bottom of my fridge area and water leaking from the ice maker or ice maker schute and leaking on to our floor and the puddle on our tile floor damaged our new kitchen cabinet at the floor. Samsung came out again and the technicians worked on the fridge again, removed the icemaker and via a zoom call, a third technician said that since I used a hair dryer to melt the ice, that they would not repair. Put the icemaker back and said good luck and goodbye. Will never buy another Samsung product. If they would have just replaced that little gasket on the coil and added some silicon, i believe that would have fixed it for good. Great video. Now I need to decide if I just want to dump this fridge or fix it myself.

This is a great video! I have had Samsung come out to repair this issue at least 6 times and each time they came out the problem became worse and worse. Now I have water melting from the ice maker into the dispenser chute, of Course it melts, then if you dispense the ice, a bunch of water comes out then the ice which looks half melted. Samsung gave up and supposedly is refunding me because they say my icemaker is unrepairable. (I have yet to see the check from Samsung. I didn't see my model listed below, and want to confirm that the parts replaced were the correct ones, or maybe they were improperly installed. I have is RF24J9960S4/AA. From the video it sounds like the problem I am having may be due to the fan not circulating properly, or a leak, or maybe the supply tube alignment. Samsung replaced the control board twice and the ice maker 4 times in the past 2-3 years. The last time was in March 2023. The first time was in 2018. I remember the first technician applying the food grade silicone, because he said that this compartment is notorious for leaking. After the icemaker was replaced for the first time, the problem appeared to be fixed. Since then every repair was worse and the time in between the issue got shorter and shorter. One question I have. Is it possible, if they put the incorrect control board in, would everything work but the ice maker not chilling properly, or the defrost mode in the ice maker not set properly? If the fridge is not balanced properly, could this cause the ice chamber to not seal to the door? I have checked the door gasket and even added backer rod under the gasket to insure a real tight seal. It seems like this should be an easy fix, but I still cannot determine the cause. Do you have any idea, or know the kit number for my fridge? Thank you.

Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I have seen many over the years but yours is the most detailed and informative of any of them. I’ve had my Samsung refrigerator since 2014. I’ve gone through this process about 1/2 a dozen times and it is so aggravating. I wasn’t aware of the updated kit that was available. I had already taken care of all the air gaps with silicone and replaced that rectangle ring with the Y clips but it just happened again after about a year and a half. I’m ready to do the rest of the retro if that will help. I see you are still producing the vid for my model. It’s pretty much the same as the one in this vid. Ordered the parts for my RF28HDEDBSR/AA. Operation went pretty much exactly as described by in his video. Hardest part for me was pulling out the auger motor. I think it was iced in back. I thought I could do this without a steamer (though for the most part I did), but I borrowed the neighbor's steamer to melt around the auger, and after some muscle, it finally came out. Assembly was easy.
One week later, no icing up at all so far. Thanks BeardedApplianceRepair.

This is a known issue. Chat with Samsung customer support. They will send out a local qualified technician and order you parts for free. Mine is doing mine now. Says he does 15 a week. Don’t use a hair dryer to defrost anything. He says people do that a lot. I took out my food left the doors open and used a mug of water that I kept microwaving over and over to speed up the process.

Same issues as everyone else with the ice maker freezing! Force defrost about every three weeks! But last week we noticed the food in the freezer getting more and more soft, poured the ice cream out! Took everything out and removed back panel and the coils were bone dry! Took back panel off and cleaned condenser, checked drain tubes, etc. everything was great except the compressor high and low side did not appear as cold or hot as they should’ve been! Utility water pressure plays a role in the filling of ice tray. It is a timer based valve opening. High water pressure can result in overfilling of tray resulting in buildup of ice from overflow. Sometimes backing down ice maker water line feed value helps reduce the amount of tray fill volume. This unfortunately also reduces front door drinking water dispensing flow rate. A small valve put inline with tube on back of refrig, only on ice fill line could be used to reduce ice maker water fill level.
The tube fill end position at inside top is also important as shown in video. Misalignment will cause filling water to splash outside of ice tray again adding to ice buildup in icemaker area.

I got one of these refrigerators with a house I bought and I have been having problems with icing up. I watched your entire video and pulled mine apart to take a look if anything obvious is wrong. My model number is RF23M8070SG/AA and date of mfr is April 2018 so this is one that should have kit DA82-02638A installed.
However what I found is mine has the Y clips on the evaporator tubes so that got me wondering, how can I tell if mine already had a kit installed? Did some come with the Y clips and still have problems? The ice maker has a date label of 2018-04-02 and DA97-18859A which makes me think it does not have the kit installed.

I just purchased a new Samsung with this "style" of icemaker. Mine has a build date of June 2021 so hopefully it won't be a problem, but if it does give me a problem I think I would merely use the old fashion ice trays or buy a countertop ice maker to avoid the frustration of a continual problem.

good vid, my samsung was built in Oct 2014, ice maker broke DA97-15217D and I replaced it myself. back in Feb 2019. along with the ice bucket which cracked. worked fine then started to ice up again and stop making ice. I then found the Fd mode every few weeks I have to run it a few times. but its annoying. now past 2 months twice the Fridge Evap froze up coils, I thawed it out and resealed it and seams to work so far. if it gives me more problems I am about get rid of it. and never buy a Samsung again. I gave Samsung 1 more chance on a Electric dryer. and it was working out but broke after 5 years. first burned thru coil. I replaced coil, then burned thru wire leading to coil. and that was it. I will only buy appliances made by Whirlpool brands ( Whilrpool, Maytag, AMANA, Roper), GE, and to some extent frigidaire (Kitchen appliances only)
here is a solution dont buy a samsung.

Meanwhile in the reality, there is no ice or water. I checked the tube from the water valve to the icemaker. The tube is empty. The parallel tube supplies the door dispenser with water perfectly. So, there is no problem with water filter or water tank. The valve is closed, which supplies the icemaker with water. Why?

4:49 - why would you put the tip of the steamer against the side of the ice box, where the sealant is? If the box is completely frozen in place, like mine was, it would take a long time for the steam to get around the sealant or to heat the box up enough for the ice to melt. I put the tip of my steamer up into the opening of the ice chute, where the ice comes out, and it melted all the ice and freed my ice box in about 2-3 minutes. Water started pouring out of the bottom in a few seconds, so definitely have towels underneath before you start!
