Great reaction. Biggest rock band in the world for the last 37 years and still putting out great music.
I do think there’s a law on the books that carries a 3-5 year sentence for not reacting to this song live. Non-U2 fans buy tickets to their shows just to see them play this song.
Really every U2 reaction should be of a live performance. No one comes close to their live performances.
It would be cool to see Ethan react to the duo of songs - All I Want is You, into Where the Streets Have No Name from 2001 Slane Castle. Truly a jaw dropping performance just a couple of days after his father died.
If you want to see a different side of the band, check out Bullet the Blue Sky from Sydney in 93, or in Paris in 2015. Or Love Is Blindness from Sydney in 93.
I’m very jealous of you both, as I’ve been a fan for 36 years and have seen them 13 times. You have an incredible musical journey that you can discover. The best U2 is not the “hits”.

I haven't visited your channel for a while. Your son has grown so much a barely recognize him. I love this song. There is so momentum to it, it sounds like manifest destiny. The Joshua Tree was U2's album about America. It is counted among their best records but it almost was derailed by this song. They had a very difficult time recording it. There was a point where the band and Steve Lillywhite, Brian Eno almost gave up. Persistence ruled the day and it became among the best songs U2 ever released. So good to see you two, again.

what a song i am not a massive u2 fan but back in the 80s and very early 90s i did like there music and some of the meanings to there lyrics, Bono wrote the lyrics in response to the notion that it is possible to identify a person's religion and income based on the street on which they lived is why the song where the streets have no name is based upon so strong them lyrics

This whole album is freakin good but I have a special place for that song. In the official video you see the band playing on the roof of a building at the corner of two streets well... that's what we, my bro, a bud and me did in the form of a 30 people BBQ party on the roof of our appart. We had the speakers blasting this song. When nightfall came, to top it off, there was an international firework competition we could see from the roof. Decades later, people I barely know who were there still speak of this party to me when we cross paths.

You should definitely show him some live performances. They are the best live band. Try Bad from Live Aid 1985, the performance that launched their already great career to international superstars. One Tree Hill from the Rattle and Hum outtakes live performance, With or Without you Live from Boston 2001 (be sure he hears the studio version of that too. Because he sings on his back in the live performance and it's extremely emotional, but it's VERY difficult for even the best singers to sing on their back so his voice lacks it's usual power in that, but rather lands on the hyper-emotional side instead). also search "U2 Perform Rare, Intimate Version on "Every Breaking Wave" [EXCLUSIVE]" and it should come up with an older Bono singing on the porch of a house and even though the song is stripped down to it's base components, it's incredibly emotional and powerful. Another to see is "U2 - All I Want Is You / Where The Streets Have No Name" live from Slane Castle. There are two channels that I've found that uploaded that one, but one of them is extremely low quality and very blurry. The better copy is on a Larissa Onofre channel.

I saw them in New Jersey (!) on the "Popmart" tour (Meadowlands). They were brilliant. I agree with Ethan about Bono's voice. It has amazing rock and roll power and clarity, but also something very deep and emotional. There's something of the ancient folk singer about him. (One of his standout vocals was guesting on a track by Irish folk/new age band Clannad: In A Lifetime). The best live track to listen to IMO would be Bullet The Blue Sky from the Rattle and Hum album.

On duets. Springsteen may not be to "son"'s (sorry, name?) liking, however objectively speaking Springsteen is a legend, and would have been at a peak during the time. On the reverse, I am not much of a Billy Joel fan, but I understand his significance.
One of my favorite concerts was (of course) U2 in Vegas 2005. This specific show turned out to be somewhat legendary in the U2 community. I had gone to the show, the night before. I did not have tickets for this second show on Nov 5th. I scored some at the box office that morning (Both nights were sold out, but they sometimes release tickets on the day of the show, as certain comp tickets are sometimes not used or the something like that. So, U2 usually sticks to the same setlist from night to night, changing only 2 or so songs if they do more than 1 night in the same venue. They completely changed up the setlist on Nov 5. Not only did they rearrange the order, but also changed up more songs than they ever do, playing some that made a rare appearance on the tour, and/or played first that night. The band were also on another level that night, and the crowd as well. It was madness and deafening.
But back to duets. On top of a killer performance, we got other treats. Mary J Blige came out to duet on One. As that weren't enough, Brandon Flowers from The Killers came out to duet on In A Little While (one of the only performances, if not the only performance of that song, on this tour). The Killers are from Vegas, so this was extra special. Plus Brandon Flowers is a huge U2 fan. Similar to Springsteen, this was probably at the peak of the Killer's popularity as well.

A cool U2 song. The song is about Ireland. In Ireland (and Northern Ireland), many cities are divided: rich/poor, Catholic/Protestant, etc. By knowing which street a person lives on you can tell their religion, wealth and beliefs: it's where the streets have no name.
Other U2 songs to check out - With or Without You, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, Sunday Bloody Sunday and New Years Day (play this Jan 1, 2024). Glad you are doing a new band to the channel. Hope to see you explore more bands this year that you have not done on the channel.

Great Reaction. I love the analogy of the Italian Restaurant. Im glad you did the studio/album version first. If you thought the lead-in/intro was great here there are multiple different live performance of Where The Streets Have No Name, where the transition from the previous song is just out of this world:
    ZooTV Tour
Running to Stand Still > Where The Streets Have No Name
    Super Bowl Halftime 2001
MLK > Where The Streets Have No Name
    Shane Castle
All I Want Is You > Where The Streets Have No Name
    Popmart Tour
Please > Where The Streets Have No Name
Each one gives me goosebumps and chills. I have been to over 400 concerts, and nothing comes close to the live experience of Where the Streets Have No Name. If you feel that build up and the feeling of wanting more from the studio recording, LIVE is a whole other experience. It is anthemic, intimate yet grand and majestic and communal and spiritual, a rush of energy and emotion that builds and builds and everyone around you is one in the moment. We aren't just singing along, we are all transported somewhere else, and you feel connected to the band and everyone in that stadium/arena.
It is far above and beyond any other sing-a-long or moment from any other artist. Ive seen some amazing acts live too.

Many say the Slane Castle version with the song All I Want You as a package is the best; worth mentioning and very emotional is the Super Bowl 2002 version (some say the best intermission act) with all the names of the victims from 9/11/2001 in the background.

Ethan, this is the opening (taster?) track for the album Joshua Tree, so if you want more of a meal then maybe you should listen to the album? You can't beat Italian restaurants, so I'm with you there. This song, written by lead singer Bono (born Paul David Hewson), is apparently inspired by the notion that you can identify a person's religion and income based on the street on which they lived, particularly in Belfast, although Bono and the band are from Dublin. It says here (on Wiki) that producer Brian Eno nearly gave up on the song and wanted to erase the tapes and have the band start again from scratch!
    My favourites:
    1983 - New Year's Day (UK #10, US #53)
1984 - Pride (In The Name Of Love) (UK #3, US #33)

Totally agree with Ethan on this Springsteen would ruin any act, and I think Richie Blackmore would back me also on this.

Springsteen never did much for me either, Ethan, though he did have a couple of really cool songs, and I'm told his live performances were legendary, which might be the real reason he became so famous. I think you'd enjoy his live performance of Rosalita, as well as the studio version. Fun song.

This song is far from iconic. I would say it is slightly above average. Sunday Bloody Sunday and New Year's Day are iconic - not some song from a highly overrated album. U2 found their their sound on the album War. Instead of staying with that sound, the sound bcame more ambient on The Unforgettable Fire. Instead of going back to the political themes on War, Joshya Tree was full of introspective nonsense. Bullet the Blue Sky was the only song on Joshua Tree that sounds like it could have been on War. Things got even worse after Joshua Tree when they experimented with dance and industrial music.
