Have you used any of these hacks? Let us know!
I used a shimano front derailleur shifter for my dropper post. Looks really neat and stealthy compared to the original switch that sticks like a bulge on my handlebar
Amazing hacks thanks very much. I've got a giant 150mm stealth dropper. When I first got it the dropper had a bit of side to side play maybe 5-7 mm each way. Other riders told me this was normal for droppers. 1.5 years on the side to side motion with help from wet dirt has worn down the paint on stanchions to the metal at the top and bottom of the stanchions, just a small 2mm wide scratch where the seat sits when fully extended and fully compressed. Would this be covered by warranty? Or should I just use Doddy's nail varnish technique? The dropper stills work perfectly.
i love the second one , i work at a small bike shop in Bahrain (small island in the middle east) and had one or two costumers come in with dropper posts stopping where it met the seat clamp , after experimenting on my own dropper post i found that their bikes had something wrong .. the seat clamp print said torque it to 7nm where the new clamps said 4nm both bikes were 2018-2019 Scott Sparks , i had previously given them a service and the grease had some dirt in it so.... i replaced it with suspension oil and for my bike i used mineral oil
. this vid would have been a life saver if i saw it a year ago . :0
If you have access to heat shrink tubes used in electronics that works really well connecting both cable ends to feed through your bike frame, that way you can tug the cable in both directions, there are heat shrink tubes(more Expensive) that have adhesive coated on the inside of the heat shrink tube, but don't that's really necessary.
Another hack if you donât have access to shrink tubes, use tightly wound electrical tape around the old and new hose, just donât use too many layers and thereâs a suprising amount of strength there, just make sure the hoses havenât got any lube on them and jobs a good one....
Henry is whispering like he snuck into the shop late at night, and is trying not to wake Doddy who fell asleep at the work bench
Agreed, maybe he does not know where the light switch is yet.
Facts
i think he had the mic in his pocket. maybe he has a eye problem his dr is working on and light botheres his eyes. lol just picking.
talking louder would help.
For my cable routing, I stuffed dental floss in my downtube and vacuumed it out of the seat tube then taped the outer cable to it very firmly and then pushed the housing through while gently guiding it with the floss. After that, just feed the inner cable through the housing and it works a dream!
I got a dropper on my stumpy when I got it & have to say it is a game changer & my riding & technique has improved no end
Henry was definitely right about not storing the dropper with the seat down. I did that with my first dropper and left it at a friend's house for like 3 weeks, couldn't ride due to work. When I got it back, it was stuck down. Now I always warn people to raise the seat when they're done riding. Naturally you lower the seat when you're done to get off the bike so it's easy to leave it down and forget. A few days down is probably fine but over a week starts to get sketchy imo.
Henry, you are just the right brow.
I love this mans voice!
Simp?
He sounds like Chris eubank
It's March of 2021, and I still don't have a dropper post. I know, I'm a hold-out like I was with tubeless tires, but I know the time is near when I will have a dropper on my bike.
Take my full suspension, disc brakes, carbon, 1x, whatever you think the best wheel size - but don't take my dropper post.
MehYam2112 Iâd even give my suspension fork
BraĆljo wow, youâre committed.
Anonymous Commenter itâs honestly the number one most important thing on the bike for me, other than having a frame that can accommodate one. Having started off road cycling, I never liked mountain biking that much till I tried a dropper post
@@Brauljo I am the same way all the way!
I have a cable dropper that I've had to change cable and housing alot. Instead of ripping everything out and spending a lot of time fishing the new cable through the frame, I would.
1. remove cable from dropper end the pull cable out from the lever
2. insert new cable into old housing.
3. remove old housing, leaving only new cable in place
4. clean and lube cable
5. push on new housing from seat post area and snug into lever ( may take a little effort to get through some holes in frame)
this method takes me 30 minutes to change cable and housing
Love your hacks videos Henry, I even enjoy trying to decipher your rather obscure references...a few good tricks here, the surgical tubing and the gear ferrule bodge are my favourites
Listening to Henry talk is like snuggeling up infront of a fire on a cold winter day with some hot choclate in your hands
Dude, youâre vocabulary is off the charts.
Instead of sergical hose I use a couple inches of spoke and slide it into each end of the cable because that sergical hose doesn't always fit through the gromets in a frame
Silky smooth voice...mood lighting...are you trying to seduce us? I enjoyed it by the way!đđ
My dropper post has got to be the best investment I've ever made on my bike ( and I've made a load ) it totally transformed riding. Especially in a group ride. No more stopping/starting to manually adjust seat height so much more fluid riding experience. Get one. Simples.
Agreed. I just bought my wife a new bike. She's not a confident rider so the first thing I installed was a dropper. Now she can drop the seat as she is stopping and easily put her feet on the ground. It's a game changer for her.
Properly helpful, thanks
Great tips Henry.
Awesome tips and info from The Prof...đđđđ
Great video and great tips for newbies to bike nerds!
Um? Stupid question here... how to deal with dust and grime build up? Isn't that going to eventually get past the seal and cause leaks? So should I clean that grime after every ride and apply new sram butter grease each time? Isn't there some kind of collapsible boot to go over the post to block grime? Or maybe use that old inner tube trick over the entire travel of the post from rails to clamp? Or fender? I am surprised nobody ever mentions this in dropper post care and hack videos. So I'm wondering if I'm being stupid about it?
to push through cables in a frame i have had success by using a piece of spoke (about 15 mm) to join the old and new cables, then put a bit of hot glue on the spoke and cover with heat shrink. it forms a strong bond. still push it through, but it grips so tightly you could probably pull it.
Good upload again

Amen! I love my adjustable seat post! I can ride a hard tail forever if I have a dropper post installed.
Best invention ever!
fingerboard griptape (like quality tech decks if you didn't know) makes really nice pads for dropper levers and shifters. It's pretty much adhesive backed and surprisingly grippy foam, get them really cheap off ebay and they don't rip your thumbs up like some griptapes.
Great hacks Henry
Nice video #GMBNTech
The ligthning reminds me of a crime scene.
Not complaining.
i also noticed the neo-noir vibe...
Thanks Henry, love my dropper - have you ever used Juice Lubes fork juice? have to say I swear by it for keeping the bouncy bits in good nic!
If your dropper shaft is unprotected.. Give it a wipe before dropping (obviously you may not have time etc during a race or fast paced ride).
I have a cheap ZOOM Tequila and apart from the top actuator needing a lube, keeping the post as clean as I can helps keep it from wearing out.
Haha I love how it's actually rockshox that makes the stanchion clamp thing, probably because they know their reverb sucks đ€
Thanks for explaining what "one of THESE" is!
Fantastic hacks (and bodge ) lets see a bodge for putting sealed bearings in the 8100 hubs next ... seriously though any way to find out what specific keys you need for specific fox or marzocchi dropper lengths without having to pull I apart first?
Great video! Would this be the same for a TranzX?
Uhhh dropper post hacks ASMR edition???

I was actually thinking about using a Sram Grip Shifter as a Dropper leaver - I already have a gear shifter - but I wasn't certain that it would in fact work... What mods do I have to do to the shifter when I get it? Thanks...
hi, what is the thin suspension oil you're using @ 1:28, please? - looks like rockshox, but which one?
Hey man good bud but How do you get the collar back in, got it out but canât screw down or get the collar back
3:29 **notices nose ring** he's a... he's a monster!!
For grip on controls you can stipple the plastic with a soldiering iron.
Old inner tyre approx. 20cm cut it half and cover the MOVING part of dropper post (cut side front). Use zip ties both ends. Cheapest mud protect and doesn't look so bad even.
I wouldnt. The smallest grain of sand between the rubber and post will scratch it quick. Just like old fork boots did
@@Dude-Smellmyhelmet I use similar but with block to hold rubber away from post...and attached to seat rails. Keeps it at least 1 inch away from stantion.
Tho yes a big stone could sit in the rubber when dropped and get trapped when raised. But wont effect air seal unlike a fork
Yeah, I wouldn't do that. Would be too stressful, because I would have to be checking under it all the time, like that guy said, if you get any dirt in there, it'll scratch it very easily and also attract moisture and all the bad stuff.
I'd rather just wipe the post off with a micro fiber cloth after riding, already do that for the fork stanchions so it's not hard to remember one more spot.
@@Dude-Smellmyhelmet It is not skintight and it is up to you how much you cover the post. It just folds behind when you drop the post.
I thought I was listening to Chris Eubank đ
Love the phrases used...v funny... Not sure ur friend from Hartlepool isnt a 'wrong un' đ€đđđ

How do i know what â light suspension oilâ is? a little more specifics would be good
S D i guess he refers to a low viscosity
Hi i have a dropper post on my 2018 Orbea rall m10. Every time I clean it n take the post out it plays havoc on the cable n has been a nightmare since any other tips you can advise as when I reinstall the post the cable gets caught n at the bar end it seems to be loose.
Thanks great video đ€Ł
Reverb, or post with adjustment at lever end
Great video Henry. Can anyone tell me the make of the clamp Henry put round the post when it wouldn't stay up?
Rock Shox makes those ;)
@@kubagajda7347 can you supply a website link as I've Google it but can't find a clamp that is split so it's easier to attach like the one in the video

My lever isnt working do you think the cable couldve come loose ?
If i pull the cable from under the seat the seat will rise and putting my weight on it will allow me to lower it. Its just the lever that doesnt work and its blowing my brains.
Any feedback would be much appreciated,
Thanks.
Can I use Teflon grease on my dropper post?
'LA Looks' hair gel (around $3 for 20 oz.)... it says, "Hold Level 10" and "Extreme Sport" so I used it when installing my dropper post. So far, so good (I shit you not)! ;)
My droper post is squeaky..i know its my dropper post because when i ride sitting down is drives me.crazy..and when i stand up and pedal i cnar hear it..can sumone help..driving me nuts
Quick one - the Rockshox Reverb seatpost collar; does it only fit a Reverb? Do I have to trial and error to see if it would work on my X Fusion dropper?
Edit: figured it out. Found collar specs of 25.4mm diameter, and my X Fusion stem is 27.0; dang it! Not going to work!
Can you use fork juice instead of silicone spray
I took my dropper post out to grease it before I learned I could turn the bars, so I had to unclamp my remote/lever. Now my lever sticks when I push it. How can I get my lever to stop sticking?
I personally put a towel as an interface between my seat post stanchion and my bike stand
Hi, unrelated to dropper posts, my question is about lock on grips. I have a 2017 scott spark 740 and I have attempted to change the stock Syncros grips to Lizard Skins. The problem is that on the new grip the plastic flange that is supposed to be clamped by the lockring is approximately 50% the size of the stock Syncros 1, With the scott the clamp for the lockout lever also locks the grip in place. rather than needing the lockring. Due to the flange size difference I cannot clamp the grip. The second problem is that lockout lever clamp is too large to clamp the bar without having a grip flange inside it otherwise I could of just slid the clamp along slightly and used the lizard skin lockrings to secure the grip but this is not possible, I can see that simple option would be to just buy the exact same grip that came on the bike again. But is there another solution to this problem. Thanks in advance.
ESI grips or similar
What do you thing on long travel post - heavy rider combo? I'm 92kg/~200lbs and my 170mm dropper flexes a lot when i'm climbing... this worries me. Any thoughts?
@Henry Quinney Only one more question: Do larger diameter seatpost also have larger diameter shafts? I would't expect a brand to manufacture 3 different shafts for a given model depending on a frame standard. Anyway, my Kona fits 34.9 so I'd happily go for the thickest one there is, as soon as my Bontrager decides to give up
Can u use gt85
Toe strap? Have you been lurking in museums?
Could I fit a dropper to my ih Sunday I only have about 5 maybe 6 inches of seat post to mount it to, but only need a 4 inch rise/100mm ish from the seat for climbing and same drop for descending, anyone got a suggestion for a compact in length post that's fairly robust đ€

That reference to Matt Damon in The Departed is just genius.

The ghost of the okey kokey....đđđ
I think the grip shifter is a terrible idea. Imagine doing a descent, holding on for dear life and actuating it as you go over a drop?
Tom Just the momentum you need for a nice frontflip.
My seat post are slipping, help? I canât find any video. Still new to mountain biking.
im thinking of buying a dropper post but I don't have much money what is a very cheap dropper post that will actually last?
Howard The Alien the brand x ascend ii works great for me while not being kept great. It costs $200 Australian or like ÂŁ112. You can get it from chain reaction cycles

There is no such thing. Brand X is good, but it will not "actually last".
My crank brothers highline is breaking my heart by constantly creeping back up. I can spend half an hour twiddling around with cable tension to fix it but the next ride it starts all over again. I'm sorry I didn't go with a reverb
I just burned my crank bros biggest pile of shit!! Got a fox now and not looking back
My Fusion x is only 3 months old and is not going down at all when I press the button, Surly it can't be dirt that is stopping this.
Hartlepool reference is going to go over a few heads đ
Mine included.
I might be wrong... I am a complete beginner when it comes to maintenance. But doesn't WD40 wreck dropper posts?
I think if my dropper wouldn't stay up or down in the middle of a ride, I'd rather use some zip ties to hold it in the down position. Put the zip ties through the saddle rails and around the top tube of the frame. I'd rather descend safely than climb comfortably.
I have just got a new bike with a dropper post. I just got used to the seat being high all the time on my old bike and now i feel uncomfortable with the seat down
Just keep it erect then, mate :)
Have never really got the dropper post thing, my bike came with one, had it not, I wouldn't have bought one
Hey Anthony, It really depends on the riding you're doing. If you're more of an XC or downhill kind of person you probably wouldn't need one. đ
Can you please help me! My dropper post is completely jammed, it won't move, I only got it today đ
Love the moody lighting...
I want a dropped so bad, but finding a good 27.2 dropped is hard
Ran a ks eTen its a good post for the money, ran it for about a year up until I upgraded to a longer travel one and it comes in 27.2mm đ
KS has the Integra Lev, which should be pretty damn good.
Lynecomponents.com
So my friend in Hartlepool said đđ
WD40 only attracts dirt and Grit. What's good for loosening up tight or seized bolts or made it surfaces is not an ideal lubricant. Pure Silicone. The best for rubber seals
Agreed. And wd40 will dissolve the grease when it seeps inside
Is this the new Chris Eubank, speaking?
all this and nothing on the cable travel itself (from the lever to the seat post itself ???
Why is this asmr
Can't say I'm too keep on having a grip shift for any function. I'd have nightmares about accidently actuating something while moving around on the bike.
Great bike , rides smooth czcams.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L I added a bigger spring loaded seat to it . Takes a bit of adjusting cables to get brakes and shifting to perfect . I've owned quite a few bikes in the past that were absolutely uncomfortable to ride and they always ended up as garage wall decor . I'm not seeing that with this one. It's pretty light I've only ridden it a few miles but I like it . As for the pedals falling off in the other reviews , the pedal arms are aluminum along with the pedal studs look to be also . I would not overtighten them. I can see it would be very easy to overtighten them and strip the threads right off . All in all I think it's pretty good quality besides the aluminum pedal thing

David because itâs heavy?
@@NotTheLarryDavid noo, the weight is fine (i tried ks carbon) but the whole thing of getting up and down the saddle is a waste of time, we have short decends and you arrive, stop pedalling early, push the lever and the saddle, do the decend and if in the middle you need do pedal hard for 2-3 sec (maybe a wall) you have 0 traction and a bike tha goes all over the place, than you finish and ypu have to push again the lever and wait for the saddle.
Add the fact that after the first hour you are not lucid anymore.
I tried in my test track and actually i was faster without dropper.
And a plus of a carbon seatpost is that is you do Marathon also, like me, on a front is way comfier and doesn't get loose overtime.
@@David-jh2jl hm, interesting. I've always had XC bikes so I'm used to having one height set and that's it. I recently bought a trail bike with a dropper post and I've got to say I feel like everyone else when they say it changed the way they ride. It has for me for sure. It's so convenient to press a lever to get a completely different geometry in a matter of a second, and I've gotten so used to just change the seat post on the go that I find it hard to go back to a bike that hasn't one.
