  • From the episode "The Builders" - Basil pretends Stubbs did some building work in the hotel when actually it was O'Reilly. He can't fool Sybil though.

    I heard on an interview with John Cleese, that Prunella Scales is such a kind person. So it was hard for her to do the physical stunts. They had to instruct her, to beat harder several times. Then she demanded the umbrella to be padded. Which it’s quite clear it is, from this scene. - Great actress. 😁

    • @hodgeelmwood8677
      @hodgeelmwood8677 Před 10 měsíci +2

      The reason this type of comedy worked is because of the role reversal. It was taken for granted that "most men" would not "allow" their wives to be this physical in anger. The joke was not the beating, it was the man portrayed as fearing his wife's wrath, showing that he was not capable of "controlling" his wife.

    • @user-et6pj4db9s
      @user-et6pj4db9s Před 4 měsíci

      @@hodgeelmwood8677 That does get reversed at times though like in the Psychiatrist he tells Sybil to watch as he exposes the guy with the girl in his room, though that gets undermined when the old mother comes out instead but also in the wedding anniversary he takes control and puts her in the cupboard after she comes home while he's busy bluffing their friends that she's sick. And she doesn't even protest she just lets him lead her and gets in the cupboard! And perhaps the most defiant moment is when he orders a room in his own hotel at her after having walked out on everyone a moment before. Usually these moments of assertion come once he's at the end of his tether and has mentally snapped but he isn't meek all the time

    Good comedy is born out of real life situations. The UK, especially in the 1970's & 80's had plenty handy Irish tradesmen, many unqualified, but able to do a fairish job at a reasonable price. They got on in life, by being able to take the criticism and use their Blarney to talk their way out of any awkward situations. In contrast their English counterpart would probably down tools and storm out in a huff, full of righteous indignation. As an Irish person I find this episode very funny, true to life and in no way offensive. The joke in this episode, for those that don't get it, is that Basil's ineptitude and penny pinching land him in trouble.......again. This is the running theme of both series of Fawlty Towers. It is a common comedic theme also used by Laurel & Hardy and many others. I assure you Ireland had many O'Reillys too.

    • @DieFlabbergast

      People tend to notice those who stand out. Immigrants from Ireland largely came in two categories -- the highly qualified (doctors, accountants, lawyers, engineers, etc.) who moved to England because there was much more money to be made there, and the unqualified and uneducated (farm labourers, etc.) who moved to England because of high unemployment in Ireland and higher wages in England. For most English people, it was only the second type of Irishman that they encountered. Most of the first category were not easily recognisable as Irish, as they "Anglicised" their accents, or their accent from the start was little different from their English counterparts. Ordinary Irish people mostly stayed in Ireland.

    There's a very rare editing slip-up here.
    After Sybil says 'You think I'm joking don't you' with a terrifying smile at O'Reilly, O'Reilly beams back at her. But then there's a cut away which is too fast, so we don't see O'Reilly's face properly - a still photo exists sowing how hilarious his 'charming smile' is.
    Therefore when Basil then says 'Oh don't smile', it's not immediately clear that he's referring to O'Reilly's disastrous smiley attempt to ingratiate himself with Sybil, and - which is the main point - it's a bit less funny as a result. (I realise Sybil then says 'Why are you smiling?' to O'Reilly, which does help clarify things, but O'Reilly's full smile, and the comedic contrast between it and the upcoming beating, is still lost!)
