Uni-Vibe before or after pedals?: JHS Unicorn V2

- I've always wanted to try a Uni-Vibe. Back in the 90's and early 2000's they were expensive and kind of rare. So, I ended up forgetting about the idea of getting a Uni-Vibe and settled with Phasers and Chorus pedals instead. Lately, I've been on a Uni-Vibe kick, so I reached out to the kind folks at JHS pedals, and asked if they were interested in sending one my way.
They obliged and sent their Unicorn V2. Now, considering how little experience I have with this specific guitar effect, I decided to test out the Unicorn V2 with some of my favorite pedals and experiment with not only the controls, but also the pedal placement and signal chain.

I have a unicorn. It is the 2nd pedal In my chain behind my compressor. It is before everything else including fuzz
It just makes sense to put it before fuzz and ODs. When it's after, I find it too overwhelming.
You definitely get more of the effect of the pedal at the end of the chain but with the wet/dry switch can't you fine tune how much your introducing the effect?
Exactly! That is what makes this a more versatile effect.
I've read some people say that the JHS Unicorn has some clipping issues; mostly with humbuckers or hotter pickups. Did you notice any clipping at all? Been wanting to get a Uni-Vibe but the pricetags can be a bit high on other options
Cheers!
I haven't heard any clipping. Mind you, I don't play the hottest humbuckers so I can't say for sure.
I think most people would use it before pedals. It tends to make drives sound a little harsh when placed after them although we ve seen players we love to put it at the end. Must be one of the neglected pedals nowadays or not?
I think that it isn't as popular as it once was. I think it's still one of my most mystifying pedal that I have ever heard. When I was a kid, I could never figure out what effect it was. I bought flangers, phasers and choruses and none sounded like this.
It's many years later that I heard about the Uni-Vibe. So much time and money wasted trying to get this exact modulation lol
@@TheToneLounge Yes Jon, same here, i am a sucker for the sound of some tracks of Clapton, specially his beano period, i understand he made extensive use of it. Not to mention Hendrix if we want a fine example of how the uvibe sounds like at the end of the chain.
a Univibe clone should have "weight" behind the modulation, sort of like what a Leslie speaker and the original Univibe have. This one sounds weak.
Do you mean that the modulation effect is not present enough?
@@TheToneLounge yes like the modulation isn't affecting everything or isn't "dynamic" enough. Listen to a real Univibe where the low frequencies get noticably louder and then almost disappear and even lag behind (the high frequency rate) with each rate shift. I call that "weight" or maybe "throb". Univibes had that "throb" to them
@@TheToneLounge There's almost a human vocal quality to a real Univibe and its more accurate clones
