I grew food on Mars...sort of

- With the world seriously looking at the idea of colonising and living on Mars, and with companies like SpaceX and NASA developing the technologies that could one day make that a reality, there's something important that we've got to figure out: food. How do we feed future Martian inhabitants trying to make a life on the red planet? There's a bunch of different technologies that could be used, like hydroponics, but what if we could grow it in Martian soil itself? That's what I look at in this episode as I try to grow a salad in the closest thing to Mars soil that's available...
(This video was originally released back in January on Tom Scott's channel as a guest appearance. I wanted to re-upload it for anyone that missed it and for new subscribers!)

Nice editing
Agricultural plants should not 🚫 be introduced as the first line of vegetation on Mars.
The first line of vegetation should be super hardy fast growing and spreading weeds like dandelions and other extremely hardy plants.
Then introduce insects for pollenization and small creatures mammals such as mouse and other small creatures to balance out the eco system.
Go figure.
Afterward it will be a green planet.
Imagine him being your friend and asking you to come over and try his Martian salad
Then u have a great mate
i would be there in a heartbeat :)
shrimpcrumb
Same, and I don't even like salad

I remember watching this on Tom's(the other one, not you) Channel. I love the flow of the videos, very well edited and filmed shots. You seem to have done your research and provide most of the important information in a coherent, interesting manner. Great music and sound effects too. This channel has great videos so I'd love to see more.

Great Video Tom! How do you find your video topics though
I remember this video! Very cool!
Cool video! Those microgreens look great!
Great video
Hi Tom! I've been binge-watching your videos and the quality is superb!
As a gardener and a bit of a nerd as well, this made me think. I've long thought of the scenes in the Martian where Mark Watney grows potatoes in Martian soil and as my experience in growing food grew, some questions came into my mind: Will the growth of high-calorie food be affected by the lack of our Earth-native microfauna in Martian soil granted that plants do need help from the symbiotic processes to ensure healthy growth? Does mixing [properly fermented or composted] feces into Martian soil help improve quality?
I feel that a lot of people fall into thinking that plants are magic just-add-water food machines with most tech-savvy designers getting exposed to the "cool" gardening methods such as hydroponics. Even with hydroponics though, there is a huge role that microorganisms play in the bioavailability of free nutrients and to an extent the overall health of the plant. I feel that it's a nice thought to have since plants essentially evolved with our living earth and, like us, humans, have built themselves on top of an already full world of invisible but significant creatures.
Here are some nice links on soil and microbes:

And the problem is touched upon in this article too. Though I haven't found good papers on using sterile, mars-identical soil, only non-sterile Earth soil.

Fuck maaaan, I wish so much people knew about this chanel. I love your dedication and the quality of every video.
The video is great! I can see the effort you put into this video. But, I do have a question.
Can we neutralise the perchlorate compounds in the soil by its conjugate, perchloric acid?
Hardly a martian salad, you could've sprouted those in water and they would've probably gone fine for another week from when you harvested them on just stored nutrients and sugars alone, so I doubt any nutrients have actually been extracted from the regolith.
Oh my god Tom, I actually worked with Wieger on the Food For Mars and Moon project! Very cool video, perfectly explained. Are you trying your own pee as fertilizer in the next batch? (;
Woah!! I totally forgot about your channel. I hate it when CZcams doesn't send me notifications. I don't know whether you'll read this comment but if you do, know that I'll keep supporting you! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
What programme do you use sir?
Love your accent

Underrated comment
If you had the chance, to go on a mission to Mars, would you take it?
You didn't eat the salad! Come on
I did! Just only 1 little bite 😅
@@TommoCarroll lol. Your content's really good.
>I wanted to re-upload it for anyone that missed it and for new subscribers!
nah fam, just admit that you have no new content to upload
Nope. Plenty of new content. Just finished a bunch of sponsored videos and finally had a slot for this video. Hope you enjoy Fam ✌️
try growing it on british soil mate ... it's at least as hard as martian soil xD
Grown in a martian soil simulant... in earth's atmosphere... irrelevant results
This video is pretty leafy
