Houseplants. You've got to love them. They can make any room feel that little bit better and bring a heap of benefits with them! You might have read somewhere that plants can clean the air in your house, maybe that plants can purify the air, maybe even detoxify the air and make it safer to breath. This all sounds good, especially considering how much time we spend indoors in most countries!
But how true is this? In this episode of Aspect Science I explore questions like this, looking into how plants could clean the air and how many houseplants you'd need to make a difference!

Don't replace Iggy, just water him regularly. Set an alarm to do it a couple times a week.
I believe the true answer of whether they will benefit in a given application depends on your outdoor air quality, the amount of pollutants originating inside your home and how well sealed your house is. I live in a place where it's best to keep everything out as best as possible at certain times. If you do have a true closed environment, plants can certainly contribute to better air quality.
I think the 1000 plants per 10m^2 was based on having air throughput in your house equal to the volume every hour. This seems a very specialized case. Can you confirm Aspect Tom?
In a sealed environment I believe they are required in far fewer numbers, like 1 per m^2 was the result of my research.
I have a dozen 7ft tall monsters in my small apartment. When it's all sealed up, I've no doubt they are contributing to better air quality.
A wonderfully produced vid but somewhat over generalized. Look forward to more videos!
Would you be able to cite your source for the 1000 plants per 10x10 please Tom, I'd love to read it.
Nooooooooo.... Don't dump it into the waste bin..... Noooooooooo😭😭😭😭....just water it & put it outside.... The nature will help it grow back & healthy again
You a stone cold killer man. I wasn't ready for that. NSFL warning please.
😂 Plants better watch out is all I'm saying...
😰😱 Seriously I almost died crying
I have had this plant on my desk for around 3 years and I have to say it has done wonders towards my study experience. With patience and responsibility, I promise you plants are super useful when you don't have a pet. It's like having another friend
I completely agree. It's pretty crazy the effect they can have...expect a video on WHY plants make you feel good in the future...
How did you learn your editing/cinematography/animation skills? They're excellent
I still consider them all very basic, I’ve got a lot to learn! But so far it’s been a mix of messing around with both in my spare time, working for clients that demand x,y,z and this CZcams channel has let me improve exponentially! Just practise. (CZcams tutorials for animating were invaluable - tutorials coming soon from me on Patreon by the way)
@@TommoCarroll Looking forward to it :)
BTW I guess it's After Effects..... Awesome Editing Otherwise.......
Amazing editing and writing work on this new episode! You didn't disappoint brother! So glad you're back!
Thanks so much! That really means a lot! A LOT MORE TO COME NOW!
Tom, the editing on this channel is highly enjoyable. Please never stop putting in the hours you do editing every video.
Siriusly, thank you so much. That really means a lot! It does take a lot of time and effort....but I do love it, so I guarantee I won't stop!
How did you manage to kill a spider plant?! In my experience, spider plants are practically indestructible
you managed to turn a subject that absolutely bores me (plants/botany) to something interesting and watchable. awesome job. thanks for the new knowledge! :)
Haha that’s good to hear! I know plants aren’t everyone’s favourite topic but hopefully you’ll come around after a few more plant episodes! Off to space for the next one...
We can name your plants, too!?!?! I didn't know! Last time I tried to do that I ended up with my subscribers naming my plant 'Tom Scott'... which was hilarious, but a bit confusing lol
Loved this. Huge fan of plants, but also the camera and editing are super tight, as always for your work. Glad you're back Tom!
Haha! Please tell me you still have a plant called Tom Scott!
The naming of the new plant will commence tomorrow on Instagram! :)
Cheers buddy! Really good to be back!
Great execution. I love how you approached the question, explained several angles and gently concluded. And of course the editing speaks for itself.
Thanks Sean! Really appreciate the feedback!
I guess others have already mentioned how well the scripting and direction was done in this video. It just automatically made me smile everytime the shots (of a plant for example) were taken matching with the soothing bg music
Crazy good editing and camera quality for a smaller channel, respect it! :)
I appreciate that! Thanks! Always striving to improve!
Love the way you edit this vid. It's classy, simple, and informative! ❤️
Love the editing on this video!
Thanks a lot! Glad you like it!
RIP Iggy. F
He served us well! He will be remembered!
I really enjoyed the new vlog-like format! And, as usual, amazingly edited. Thank you for such quality content, I feel like I learn something new with each of your videos and they inspire me to keep exploring the world around us 👏🏻
Thanks Rebecca! Really happy you like the new direction of the style of the videos! Hopefully I'll dial in a nice style that works seamlessly with the info etc.! Bring on more uploads!
I have two house plants in my room and not kidding since I have had them my sleeps gotten better!
That’s really great to hear!
So good. Can't wait to see how this channel transforms.
Thanks! I’m looking forward to the future!
Please make a detailed video on how you edit these videos. I've been watching for a long time and have never been disappointed! You deserve 100x more subscribers
Thanks Skyhound! Always nice to see a comment from you! So I’ve actually been working on a bunch of tutorials. They’re coming next week but are exclusive to Patreon, as they take additional time to make as I’m sure you understand! The tutorials will include animation tutorials as well as pretty much tutorials on anything people request moving forward!
This video was so beautiful edited! Can’t wait to see more from you :)
Thanks so much! I had a lot of fun making it!
This was so good! And made me appreciate my house plants a lot more. 🌿🍃🌵
Haha, I feel like all these houseplants that are finally going to be watered by all of you Aspect Herd members owe me a massive 'thanks!' 😂
Great video as always! Good to see you back man 😀
Thanks so much! :)
Plants _and your videos_ boost my mood. Superb work, Tom! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Haha that's amazing! Thanks so much!
I just found this channel, and im so glad! Just subbed!💕😀
Great stuff! I came from scishow, so glad they posted a shout-out. 👍
Really loved the pacing and newness of this style of filming!
:) That's great to hear! It's always a risk to change things up, so that's nice encouragement!
The video quality is amazing.
Tom, I really appreciate how much time and thought you put into your videos. It truly shows.
Thanks so much Debby, it’s worth it to see a comment like this :)
I had to dig to find you in my subscriptions. I love your content so it's sad I don't get recommended your stuff.
Hit the bell then
These videos are always so well produced, love it!
Glad you love it! :)
This video deserves way more views! Very straightforward video!
Oh man those B-Roll segments accompanied by some really nice SFX! Top job on this one man, the motion graphics must have taken so long but they look beautiful! You've also reminded me to go out and replace Ando the aloe vera 🌱
Aha, thought you might like those segments! They were super fun to play around with, looking forward to add more of them in within future videos! Thanks dude, surprisingly the thing that was hardest was actually figuring out how to illustrate a tree without looking like a 2 year had made it haha! Do it, get those houseplants a'going!
Excellent production quality! The time and effort you've put into this really shows. If you're trying to make candy for our eyes, ears, and brains, it's working. Can't wait to see what else you've got in the works.
That really means a lot! It does take a lot of time to make them! I could opt for quicker style videos but I want to put as much effort as I possibly can into them for all of you lovely folk!
Vines around lattices on an outside deck provide excellent shade and are very aesthetic. It's nice and relaxing.
ah, it appears i’m late to the party. love your videos. i cannot overstate how much the effort and time you put into your videos make them that much more enjoyable to watch. keep up the good work.
also love that you interact with your viewers in the comments(from what i’ve seen)
one thing tho, the music you use in your videos is quite good and i would love if you listed the music you used in the description of your videos or in pinned comments.
So beautifully shot! Loved it!
Thanks Trevor! :)
Hi Tom . Missed you so much . Feels so refreshing to see a video this good after a long time. In our school , ACs are on continously for 7 lectures in summer and heater in the winter even though no such need is felt , is it bad for the indoor air quality which would imply that our lungs are being played with ?? Superb editing
Editing is spot on bro!
ohhhh I like the vibe of this one man. Well done sir. Good to see you back
Ah thanks man! I had no idea it was you! I thought it was just someone else with your name by some weird coincidence!
I don’t know how you don’t have a million subs. Your vids are so much better than even big channels. You deserve more recognition man. Keep doing what you’re doing
Thanks so much! If you'd like to help reach that goal please feel free to share the video! And for me, I've just got to knuckle down and keep on making videos for you lovely lot!
Another great video! Worth the wait.
Thanks a lot Aiman! Thanks for your patience. That’s the last time that length of time happens in between videos!
that wiper blade editing was clever
Glad you liked it! I loved animating that part!
Iggy didn’t have to die. Just pluck the brown ones out and don’t over water. My stress level anxiety and blood pressure rising. Life can be so cruel when you’re a plant.
I feel you. I was a bit traumatized when he dumped it :(
Beautiful edit ! 👌
Love the new intro and outro been here since 500 subs :)
I was part of the Austin Flood.
Thanks for mentioning them! I wanted to bring a bit of freshness to the start and end of the video to solidify that things are changing! Thanks for your support and sticking with me for so long! :)
I like your knowledge you answered my question about the controlled environment experiments
Keep up
The trash bit at the end was hilarious. Great informative video Tom!
Haha thanks! It was one of those moments whilst I was editing on my own that made me laugh!
It's almost midnight in my place here but I immediately water my houseplant after this video because idk i think the last time i water them was like a week ago lol thanks for the reminder 😂
Haha! We're all the same! 😂 No problem for the reminder 🌿
Surprisingly, overwatering is how most people kill plants!
Your content is always great.
Thanks so much! I really appreciate that!
Ayy love the videos glad to see more
Whoop! Glad you like them! So stoked!
So damn good man!
Phenomenal video as always! What kind of camera do you use? Your videos are always so crisp and professional.
Thanks so much! I'll link you to a gear page tomorrow! :)

@@DiscountSeanConnery Hey there! Here's the link as promised: kit.com/AspectScience/gear-equipment
Another great vid, the only house plant I’ve ever had was a Venus fly trap. Had over 30 traps on it but never caught any flys.
Thanks Jevon! Haha whilst that’s really disappointing it’s probably a good thing to have so little flies in your house!
I'm happy to say that I've been here since the 'austin flood'
I'm super stoked you stuck around! It really does mean a lot! Love you all!
This Video was A lot Better Because I Could See The Advanced Planning For Eg:- Those Scenes When You Used That Sketchbook for animation and windshield animation.....
Thanks Malki!
Hey mate. Of particular interest to me as I work with a lot of companies who add Biophilic design into their products and interiors. Great video. Nice job.
Andy! Good to hear from you mate! I am all for biophillic design! Let's be honest - a nice bit of greenery makes you feel a whole different mood wherever you are!
Aspect Science very true mate 😊
Great contents! Please let me know the name of the intro soundtrack :)
For some reason, when you said it was time to replace Iggy, I thought you were going to go out in the rain and dig in the dirt. 🌿⛏️
😂😂😂😂 This made me actually chuckle. Nicely done! :)
Now to go hide the evidence...
@@TommoCarroll I saw the bandaid on your hand. Did Iggy go all _Little Shop of Horrors_ and bite you when he realized he was being replaced? "Feed me, -Seymour- Tom. Feed me!"
@@LisaBowers Haha! I was wondering who would notice that first! You're eagle eyed! You can see that this video was filmed over a couple of days as the bandaid (or plaster, where I'm from) isn't there in some shots! He did, and that's why I ultimately threw him in that garden bin so angrily!
@@TommoCarroll LOL!! Temperamental biting plants are the worst! 🤣 And, yes, I did notice it was only there in some shots. Your videos always have my full attention! 👀
RIP Iggy
2018-2019
He lived a happy, if a little dry, life!
"just open the window" he says.
I look at the thermometer outside. it's 4.30p and 97F/36C outside. I sigh.
36? We get temperatures upto 39 out here
@@Nippontradamus yeah, it gets up to 43C/110F pretty regular here. But it isn't a measuring contest; summer sucks in hot places
@@HmmmmmLemmeThinkNo Absolutely. Hot is hot everytime
Minus 15C here right now. Not planning to open a window for a few months, yet.
glad you're back
Glad to be back!
I brought my plants inside for air purifying but i realized i didnt really care but to have my babies arround made me really happy
Can we talk about how graceful and cinematic that B-roll is?
Go for it. I’m listening. Haha!
Actually, air can be quite stationary in certain setups. Like a bedroom where you sleep at night... there are a lot of factors to consider before making a conclusion
Good to have you back
Good to be back :)
Looooveeee this channel!!!!
Artsy and informational👍🌱
Like the edit 👍🏼👍🏼
This was really fun and engaging! A big pro regarding your editing style is that my ADHD-having brain leaps back to *it* instead of to other things, if that makes sense? Even through a rough patch of focus I didn't have to rewind too much to keep my place.
To demonstrate the bizarritude of my leaps in focus, during this video my brain decided to, out of nowhere, try to construct your face out of a variety of simple polygons. You'd make a very attractive collection of rhomboids... but I sure did also learn about plants, which is the impressive bit!
Also, dammit, surface area again. Like every single answer to every structural question in biology, it all comes down to surface area. I sorta have intermediate biology hard-coded into my head at this point and essentially everything that isn't vocab or a cyclical process is to do with surface area; it's both super satisfying and infallibly irksome. I do definitely intend to have a truly ludicrous number of houseplants when I'm older; I work much better when surrounded by nature, and my wallpaper would end up being green anyway.
That said, I live in Scotland so opening a window is my go-to for fresh air. I'm lucky to have that option.
well done video man. also, a suggestion for the plants new name, what if it were to be called Jackson?
Jackson? I like it. Any reason behind it though?
Aspect Science no real reason, other than the name is fun to yell, at least to me.
Quality content, as usual.
Thanks a lot! Glad you like it!
🌱loved this video so much!
but I am going to miss iggy:(
Thanks Sophie! We will remember Iggy on this day each year. It shall be know as 'The Day of Iggy' from now on
Aaaand....this channel keeps getting better!...I'll wait (im)patiently for the next video!
Thanks so much Miguel! Haha not too long for the next one!
Im a fan of your animation techniques
The quality of these videos is astonishing for how small your channel is.
Thanks as always Space Duck! You rock!
*Pro tip...*
Don't buy 'houseplants'. Search for weird and exotic plants that will make your home look unique and grow them from seed.
As someone with severe depression and anxiety, watching my plants grow into something that looks really cool, really chills me out.
Cannabis are the coolest plants I've had because the leaves are so unique, give the house a constant fragrance without attracting insects like flowers do and have something new about them almost every day.
The Filth just took my cannabis plants even though they weren't capable of producing anything to get high from a couple of weeks ago which was quite distressing having spent the year growing various plants and they destroyed one of my Bodhi Trees and a Dragons Blood tree that had only just started producing leaves.
But I do notice the difference in how long it takes odours to dissipate from the toilet now, along with feeling more depressed and anxious since I lost half my plants and am stuck with the depressing view out of my windows.
Actually modern homes are very airtight I believe that a study showed some homes had more air pollution inside than there was outside. I think in those cases a bunch of houseplants would help even if just a little. Great video, glad to see you back.
You’re correct. That line was actually edited out as it wasn’t working in the edit, but often it’s up to around 7 times higher indoors even when compared to city air pollutant levels (I’ll check on that figure if you’d like, this is just from memory right now so let me know!)
@@TommoCarrollI understand having trouble with the edit. No need to find the exact number. You are doing great, I love all your videos. Have a excellent day.
This was dope
You see the problem is half my state is constantly on fire and the air outside is unsafe to breathe
Hey buddy, just a heads up, you should put the links to your instagram and other platforms :) Just makes it easier for people to find or follow you (currentyl subscribing and following your socials). Love the channel, happy I found you this lovely Monday morning. Keep smashing the videos brother! Peace. Angus
Hey man! Thanks for checking out the channel and following all the socials! Glad you like it all! Links are in the description of the video if that’s what you mean? I could do straight up clickable links though actually
Aspect Science that’s what I meant. Just the ease of clicking and be directed straight through. More of an incentive to follow through ease of doing so. Keep smashing Tom! Respect! Where are you from buddy?
Yeah I’ve been pretty hesitant to put too many offsite links in my descriptions. But my last video had about 20 and also blew up so I don’t think I need to worry too much anymore. Will make sure to add clickable links moving forward and may retroactively change descriptions of already released videos! Cheers for the encouragement dude! I appreciate that! Poor Iggy :'( Did you think he might just be hibernating and just need some water? :( Could have replanted him outside. Sniff... :'(
To be honest, half the leaves were brown and the other half were falling off. It didn't look good. We will remember the hero known as Iggy!

You don't know how much it means to me to hear that! When I tell my CZcams buddies who I'm aiming to style the videos after, Peter Mckinnon enters into the list every time!
Very nice video! :) There is a TEDTALK about this and it is only 4 mins long - I would love to hear your "take" on it...
It is called: "How to grow fresh air | Kamal Meattle" on youtube... How would you explain their findings? :-)
7:02 that is impossible when the air outside is 10x more polluted than indoor air like my city:/
Welcome back!
Good to be back!
what about the "fresh air" during this time with the coronavirus , as the air is filled with that virus any tips on that ? thanks
Luckily the virus isn’t an airborne virus that we know of yet. It floats to the ground/whatever surface once someone coughs or sneezes. So as long as no one is coughing or sneezing into your window you should be all good. Make sure to research all these points though as I’m not a medical professional so you shouldn’t take my words as professional advice.
Also, did you keep iggy there the whole time just waiting to film this video?
Genuinely the couple of weeks before filming this video it was a case of 'jeez I need to throw this thing out....but it'll work SO WELL for the video!' 😂
You need to get a Peace Lilly (Spathiphyllum). They a super hardy. Is it starting to look like Iggy (or even worse)? Soak it in some water for an hour and it will bounce right back. The only real way to kill them is to desiccate them.
I set mine up on a capillary watering system and they always look spectacular. I just fill the reservoir when it starts drooping, and it is basically a no maintenance plat for the rest of the time. I can write up some instructions if anyone wants them.
That's awesome! I've been considering a Peace Lily so it might have to be done!
You are wrong about the filtering qualities. Research TED TALK from the guy in INDIA. Extreme transformation of air quality, even with air infiltration from one of the world's worst city for air pollution. Palms and "mother in laws toung". One works best in day and other at night. Backed by readings and data. Fo shizle mah nizzle.
how dare you tell me my tiny snake plant won't purify the air in my entire house!
That spider plant might still have been living mate! Ive seen ones looking worse spring back to life given sun and careful watering/drying cycles
