"Stan" is a song by American rapper Eminem featuring vocals sampled from the opening lines of British singer Dido's song "Thank You". It was released on November 20, 2000, as the third single from Eminem's third album, The Marshall Mathers LP (2000). "Stan" peaked at number 51 on the Billboard Hot 100. Outside of the United States, "Stan" topped the charts in 12 countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, and Ireland.
The 45 King-produced track also uses a slightly modified break from "Thank You" as its base sample; both songs were released as singles in late 2000. Retrospectively, "Stan" has been called one of Eminem's best songs, and, alongside "The Real Slim Shady" and "Lose Yourself", is considered one of his signature songs. In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked "Stan" 296th on its list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, upping their ranking to 223rd in a 2021 updated list. The song was also listed 15th on VH1's list of the greatest hip-hop songs of all time and named in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.
The song was nominated for multiple awards, including Best Song at the MTV Europe Music Awards, Video of the Year, Best Rap Video, Best Direction, and Best Cinematography at the MTV Video Music Awards. It won Best International Artist Video at the MuchMusic Video Awards. In April 2011, Complex magazine put together a list of the 100 greatest Eminem songs and ranked "Stan" second. The eponymous character's name gave rise to a slang term that refers to overzealous, maniacal, overly obsessed, entitled fans of a celebrity or personality; the term has since been included in the Oxford English Dictionary.
This song was so great the word “stan” was added to the dictionary
It's so pervasive that tons of people don't know that the term "stan" came from Eminem.
It's largely unknown that the designation "stan" was added to the English lexicon after first being used in this track.
@Ben Morrison That is true. In song form, Nas was the first to use "stan" to describe someone else, as we do in common usage.
It's definitely more because of the widespread use, regardless of the fact it comes from the Eminem song.
Stan comes from st-alker f-an. Eminem thought that through really well.
@@forreal88 He has never confirmed that. It's just a theory.
Honestly I feel like the concept of this song is one of the most genius things to ever occur in hip-hop
Yesss, this next to Nas rhyming from the perspective of a gun

eminem mid
@@ceoballs2535Even if that’s the case we are talking about the song and not him, let’s say he was mid, this song is still a masterpiece. Your statement means nothing.
Aside from the story, one of the absolute best and most classic rap samples and beats ever made
IT REMIIIINDS ME THAT ITS NOT SO BADDDD ITS NOT SO BADDDDDD
Yeah the original song - Thank You by Dido - is so good. Just as good as Stan imo.
@@junpeixix I love Thank you. Love that whole album, honestly.
RIP The 45 King
This one song is worth a whole album.

Not enough people notice that Eminem flipped the meaning of Dido's chorus. It went from a love perspective "put your picture on my wall and it reminds me that it's not so bad" and flipped it into a fan perspective of the same line. The whole chorus fits perfectly into what Stan was writing about.
ehm.. I guess literally everyone „noticed“ haha 😂
Fun fact. Lupe fiasco teaches a class at MIT on rap theory and Stan is the song he uses for the story telling example and explains why it’s the most perfect song ever written
Has lupe heard Dance with the devil ?
The way Eminem is able to manipulate his voice to flow any words he's feeling together is the most beautiful part of his talent. This song is a masterpiece. A genuine piece of art.
This song is a piece of art but he’s got lazy recently he’s just started saying the words wrong to rhyme them😭😭

Eminem's 'bad guy' is essentially a part 2 of this song. written from the perspective of Stan's little brother. It's also worth listening too
that last verse is one of his best goosebumps
vouch
Absolutely. My fav Eminem song
@@XReactionsOG I forgot Abt that verse man I used to go over that verse so many times.
Definitely a great follow up to Stan 💯
it’s genuinely so heart warming seeing someone be able to listen to these songs and albums for the first time, especially when it’s a father and son
Zero chance someone’s a big Dido fan and has never heard Stan before.
I remember growing up I was convinced that the first 3 verses were legit delivered by someone else. It never registered to me that it's Eminem playing both characters. Some of the best storytelling in music right here
How old are we talkin now, when you thought that ¿
Really awesome idea to have super iconic tracks in their own separate video. Entertaining video as always
It'd be really cool to see a video of Kevin listing off his favourite albums that you guys have listened to together since you started doing these videos.
Yes please
Yes! They should do it once every year
they posted a favorite albums of 2022 back in December
One of the most underrated song samplings in hip-hop history. They way they interpolated Dido’s ‘thank you’ into this song is incredible.
love the idea of iconic tracks having their own video!
I vividly remember bringing this CD home the day it released almost 23 years ago, and listening through. The way Stan stood out from the rest of the tracks was something truly amazing. Glad I could see Kevin experience this for the first time all these years later. Thank you!
I love that I experienced his genuine reaction to this song. I remember the same feeling when I first watched the video. The chills. The emotion. The mindblown-ness.🤯
Haven't listened to this song in years, thanks for the throwback. Still as good as ever
Gotta be one of the best Eminem (and rap in general) songs ever. For people that like Stan but haven’t found other Em songs like it, I highly recommend “Bad Guy” and “Darkness”, both very good with deeper meanings
omg i'm so excited that you guys are doing this one. I'm not even a huge rap fan but my mum raised me with eminem songs constantly playing in the background! so many artists wish they could reach this level of storytelling.
Amazing reactions as always, im loving the content that is happening here, id love to see Passion Pain and Demon Slaying sometime though, I think your dad would go crazy!! Keep up the amazing work!
i loved the single song format. i know albums are your bread and butter and i never want you guys to stop those, but more singles could be a great way to dive in more on certain songs and give the fans more content. thanks for all you guys do
Great call
i’m so glad you guys did stan separately. it’s em’s best track imo. thank you guys 🙏
shouts out from kelowna lol ✌️
Classic song. One of Em's greatest for sure
You gotta show your dad “When I’m Gone” song & video. Some of my favorite Eminem tracks are these emotional ballads.
I honestly think Kim deserves a solo video as well. If you wanted time and space for your dad to process Stan by itself, Kim definitely deserves the same treat. And I can't wait for the full album reaction!
fr , Kim is definitely something you have to process ahah
I remember the music video being hyped up on MTV before it came out and the song and video were, and still are, mind blowing.
I'd love to watch a reaction to the music video with you guys too.
The Marshall Mathers LP is my favorite album of all time and Stan is a standout for sure. Im exited for the reaction of the whole album.
even when I was in elementary school when I first heard this I knew it was special and the older I got I continued to listen to it and love it more and more. One of my top songs ever. You guys hinted at it but doing music video reviews would be dope.
Immortal Techniques Dance with the Devil would be such a suitable song for this type of format. Just as shocking, great story telling, a simply incredible song.
nahh dance with the devil is way more shocking
It's the only song that should only be listened to once
I never listen to it cause of the subject matter but it would be a cool reaction.
@@ilmohaikonen7707 I see what you mean, I only listen to it once every 3 years or so.
The silence and shock is always there after every listen...
It's to inappropriate to cover on CZcams tbh
Yeah it's hard to argue against this song as the greatest in hip-hop's history. The concept, the storytelling, the lyricist, the sample... It's got it all in spades.
Stop it, this is nowhere near the best song in hip hop history lmao. He is probably the only rap artist you listen to lmao.
@@HiiipowerHabits I never said it was, said it's hard to argue against it.
And no, I listen to a lot of artists, no doubt more than you do. But thanks for dropping by anyway ✌🏼.

This is my favorite music reaction channel. Youre both very educated about music and the way you experience the songs and break them down is just great.
Such a special song, great reaction as always, you guys rock
Absolute classic and the Dido feature fits perfectly, one of my favourite Em songs 👌
I really hope that you guys will react to castle and arose from the album revival. Those two songs playing back to back always make me so emotional. The picture he paints with his pen and the emotions he can conjure up with his skill of storytelling is so vivid that it’s honestly insane. ❤️
That would be so awrsome. This 2 Songs an in your head are enough to make Revival a good album
y'all need to react to this whole album. one of my fav albums of all time
Would of been great to see his reaction to the music video following him listening to it for the first time. This is a song I would love to listen to for the first time again.
need a full MMLP reaction!!!!
This song is a masterpiece
Hope you do the full album soon. I remember hearing it for the first time and my whole music world changing.
Definitely would love to see more videos like this!
I’d love to see you guys do a reaction to this whole album. Easily his best album and one of the most iconic rap albums ever
One of the greatest song I've ever listen
I still get goosebumps to this day!
Man, now I really want to see your dad's reaction to Dance with the Devil! Talk about shivers down the spine
Gotta do ‘Dance With The Devil’ Immortal Technique! Best story telling I’ve heard.
THANK YOU! Stan is an amazing song but dance with the devil is superior
Ton of respect for the Relapse wax on the back wall. Such an underrated record in his discography (and his last great album).
I 98% agree but relapse still had spirit but for me it’s not “great”, but compared to the last like 10 years it’s great
I agree. Recovery had potential since it was consistent, but it was consistent with overall average and a little bit above average songs
Great video and really smart idea to do the song standalone. Can’t wait for the full album reaction 👌
IM SO GLAD YOU UPLOADED THIS ON CZcams ❤️
When I was like 4 years old I remember my mum playing this song. I remember I was scared of it and asked her what the scratching sound was. She told me the song was about this son who was being ‘naughty’ and liked to write and scratch on walls (I don’t remember exactly what she said as I was 4). When I listened to this song again years later for the first time (I think I was 13) I was shocked to find out what this song was really about. Fast forward 7 years later and this song is my favourite song of all time, but I wish I can remember the depth of what I felt when I was 4 when I first listened to it, because I find it fascinating that despite not being able to understand the lyrics at that time the song still brought fear.
I really appreciate you doing singles. Some songs aren't on any really good albums(not this one) but they are culture changing songs.
Found this channel a year ago, been waiting for this video since. Great video
It’s nice to see you guys doing a single
dope video! do more single song reactions!!!!
They do single song reactions regularly on their patreon.
Dude I’ve been watching dad reacts with Connor for over a year and boy has my life changed but not my comfort CZcams content t. Keep the good tracks and albums/relevant and classic coming. I’m 35 so I’m in between both stances on the music and so appreciate dads opinions. I also am so close and get most of my music taste from him-we jam too. Y’all r entertaining and keep the good albums coming-I even paid for a patreon sub while he discovered Mac.
I have so many fkn suggestions but u have to show him the Marshall mathers LP. I was 12 listening to that on my Walkman and I think he’s gotta hear the whole thing
These two kill me how they are always move off key to the beat. Love them.
I would love to see your dad watching the video for the first time after the listening, but totally loved this 🖤
Yesss do more singles reactions
I like this, you should do more singles or even some EPs. I would love to see you’re dad’s reaction to the Vroom vroom EP
Thanks for the heart, I love the videos!
So glad you brought up the origin of the word and how it relates to this song. So powerful.
This reaction was amazing. Please do the MMLP soon!
I think Brenda’s Got A Baby - Tupac would be worthy of a single track video, his story telling in that song is superb.
Great video as always guys!
Love that song
Definitely
You should do immortal technique - dance with the devil. That song deserves its own episode
Pleaseeeee do this whole album
Gotta watch the video for this. Adds to it
Hey I absolutely love this! If you guys would like another album that goes through a full story there's this really interesting album called the girl the cat and the tree by lausse the cat. Its a quick album only about 20 minutes but tells a cool story. Definitely recommend it to anyone who's a fan of this story telling type of hip-hop.
i went to look up this album because it sounded cool and realised I already new one of the songs from it lmao. I'll have to listen to the rest!
I always love to hear what you guys say to some of my favorite albums/songs. if you want to listen to something with amazing story telling I recommend King Park by La Dispute, its post-hardcode, I don't doubt that it'll send shivers down your spine. great video!
it's also amazing how I've heard this song so many times, yet never really realized there's a scribbling sound effect the entire way through
I need more from you guys! You guys help me go to sleep and I’m running out of videos!
Dance With The Devil by Immortal Technique is one of the greatest, yet horrifying story telling hip hop songs of all time. Would suit great for a 1 song reaction.
That song is garbage.
Ohhh yea that’s another good one.
This
Facts that’s a great one song reaction
LMAO no, that's a cornfest
Snoop Dogg is bringing all of the Deathrow collection back to Spotify real soon! Would be great to get some reactions to classics like Snoop's debut, or some deeper cuts from the era!
i love these one song episodes because kevin and connor really get to focus on the details and emphasize on what they love about the track
Amazing video
I think your dad deserves to be introduced to Rick Ross...hustling was the song he burst onto the scene with and the interesting backstory of how ppl were mistaken him for the actually legendary "Freeway Rick Ross" who was a known street kingpin
Damn if you guys are doing singles I would HIGHLY recommend Dance With The Devil by Immortal Technique. Man to see your Dads face at the end of that song would be priceless
How fitting, I just listened to this yesterday
God I love this channel so much
What about a reaction series where you show him rap disses and their responses in order? Then, have him decide who he thinks had the upper hand.
Would love to see MGK - Em beef
You guys should do MMLP & MMLP2
I wanna see more of these 1 song videos!
Dido's last record Still On My Mind released in 2019, was actually quite good, a mix of Acoustic and Folktronica, hope you guys do a reaction to the music video as well.
you should’ve watched the music video it brings an extra dimension to the song
Would love to hear your dad listen & react to “Dance with the Devil” if you ever just do one song again! His reaction would be nuts 😂
gotta do the entire album now!!
he has got to watch the live performance of eminem where he brings dido out. shivers all over my body
Love your dad reaction to the ending. Can we do, Dance with the Devil by Immortal Technique? It’s a little dark but a great story.
Bro's, imagine Kevin's reaction to Kim 💀
You have to follow this up with Bad Guy from MMLP2. It’s a sequel to this song and one of Ems best intros of all time. That last verse on Bad Guy is just crazy.
i listened to this for the first time the other day and honestly nearly cried i hadnt known much about it and didnt know what to expect
'Dance with the devil' by Immortal Technique is another great storytelling track that I'd argue is even more perfectly made that deserves it's own video.
His whole catalogue is great and worth going through but that track is a standout.
that song traumatized me
@@FAYTANA Valid reaction, had me completely shocked and unable to process it for a bit as well. I looked it up afterwards if it was a true story, but even after finding out the artist's description it still took a few days and listening to some of Tech's other songs to understand it better and get over that initial feeling
I would love if you guys did “Yeah (bonus)” by Mac Miller. I’d love to see your dads reaction to that one.
we actually did do that song, its on the extended version of our Patreon Faces reaction. turned out to be my Dad's favorite on the mixtape
@@turningthetables not surprising tbh

I had the same feeling when I first heard this song as a kid, and when I asked my mom if she'd heard it before she said "that song gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it". Very powerful song 💯
Y’all have to react to the whole album sometime!
I think "mona lisa" by Lil Wayne ft Kendrick Lamar is definitely a song from an album worth listening to on it's own, I'd put it up there with stan in terms of story telling songs.
100%
SAMIDOT is fire too lifts up an entire album and underrated
If you're doing singles then you should absolutely do C.R.E.A.M and for more storytelling songs Common - I Used to Love H.E.R., Slick Rick - Children Story, and Avantdale Bowling Club - Years Gone By
