Story goes that the little brother Matthew grew up to be more of a "Stan" then his brother, that's why in the funeral you see him with his hair also dyed when his mother pulls back the hood. And what a coincidence that years after this song, Eminem's home was broken into twice by a guy named Matthew, who in 2020 was 28, right about the age little Matthew in the video should've been that year.

The ironic thing is that Matthew wasn’t even really a fan. He couldn’t have looked less bored at that concert. Stan drug him there.
Em invented this name combo of "Stan." It stands for "Stalker Fan." It was so impactful, that "Stan" was added to the dictionary. Look it up. People that are overzealous fans of other celebrities, are still referred to as "Stans."
You said it all. This was literally, a game changer; instantly iconic. Good news, it was metaphorical and not a true story.

This was the track that blew him up in the wider music industry. You didn't have to be a rap fan to love this song.The storytelling is just off the charts.
The sample from Dido also gave her a huge amount of success.
It's not a true story but I'm sure Em had quite a few obsessive fan letters to base it on.
He came up with story from many fans, obsessive fans you could say, and their letters to him. There is a story that 1 fan committed suicide, but I don’t know if thats true, or if true it had nothing to do with not hearing back from EM? Again I can’t say if that’s even true. But after this song became so popular I think people assumed it was true, and then many stories told were proven untrue, except this one. If it was true I think it would have been publicized so much that everyone would mention it in comments of reaction videos like this one. Among 100’s of other videos.
@@chrisfrank2664 I remember an interview he had when this song first came out and he said it wasnt true there. He said he got the inspiration after reading a bunch of fan mail and how obsessed he found a lot of them.

IMO, this is not only a great song but one of the most important songs that an artist has written. It warns both for artists and fans against the dangers of idol worship. Artists need to remember that the word fan comes from fanatic and fans need to remember that they are not entitled to anything from artists.
The irony of it all is that the term "stan" over the years has morphed into someone who is a huge fan of something. Stan was not a huge fan. Stan was a person who worshiped someone who he didn't know and when that person didn't give him what he thought he deserved he tried to ruin him emotionally the way that Eminem had done to him. That isn't a huge fan. That is pathological.
One of the greatest story telling in a song. & its kind of a real story.

I remember hearing this first time when album came out , I think it was 2nd track on album, and knowing EM writes funny material, from Slim Shady album, I thought first lines were jokes/ humor, and then listening to it just showed a whole new side of Eminem. Kinda foreshadowing how his career and songs could cover anything, and be serious or be funny with humor.

It’s not based on a true story but his experiences as an artist. He created the term “stan”, which we know now. It’s similar to Billie Jean and Dirty Diana, not true stories but a combination of Michael’s experiences with obsessed fans.

Eminem said he do receive letters from fans, but he then stretched it and made this beautiful story. Its a fictional story but there's a little truth in it.

You nailed it! Making a story telling from a character or from some other person perspective is so much of a Eminem thing. The only ones I've ever seen doing that is Joyner Lucas and Chamillionaire with that song Hip Hop Police which he rhymes the bad cop, the good cop and his own perspective.

Crazy people like Stan exists but most of them are not know. A few ago years there was a case of a crazy stalker fan of a rising star singer girl that ended shooting and killing her. Shes was Christina Grimmie. She was on The Voice USA a few years ago, didn't win but she was a great interpreter and she got his career boosted by the show. Some time later his life would sadly end after a small show. If you don't wnow her you should listen to her. She was GREAT!
