  • I'm a comedian, reliant on public transport and when I first heard about the hyperloop I found it fascinating so made this video to share my thoughts. Let me know what you think about the hyperloop in the space below - engineering masterpiece or scary pipe dream??

    What a wonderful breath of fresh air you are🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻😂😂 I’m from South Dakota in the United States, but was raised in California, where they have been flushing money down a high speed rail project bottomless pit for decades, they even put so much money in at times that they plug it up. Thank goodness my curiosity got the better of me after seeing you on CZcams on GBNews. You are a world class comedian!!!

    What an informatively hilarious video!
    Reminds me of British scientist Geoffrey Pyke. During WW2, he proposed building aircraft carriers out of blocks of ice, since the Allies were somewhat short of more conventional carriers. Churchill was actually quite intrigued by the idea, though it ended up being dropped when it was realized that building ice carriers was more expensive, and not so effective in warmer climates. Later, Pyke proposed moving troops and cargo underwater and over difficult terrain through tubes. The tubes were to be pressurized, and men and equipment would be whisked away with brisk efficiency. Now, Pyke knew such a trip might be mildly traumatizing for soldiers, so he suggested knocking them out with barbiturates. What a visionary!
    Thanks again for the laughs, Diane.

    • @DianeSpencercomedian
      @DianeSpencercomedian  Před 3 lety

      WOW. Okay, erm was Geoffrey Pyke missing a bit of empathy for his fellow man perhaps?! LOL! "If it's traumatic we'll just knock them out" yeah no cool cool cool cool cool...

    • @chrisbonin2174
      @chrisbonin2174 Před 3 lety

      Well, Pyke committed suicide shortly after the war. Overdosed on barbiturates. So I don't think he was what you'd call well adjusted. Fun fact: Geoffrey's cousin was Magnus Pyke, also a scientist and television presenter. He's the voice on Thomas Dolby's "She Blinded Me With Science" shouting "SCIENCE!"

    How wonderful, the projectile vomit from the hard acceleration induced motion sickness will soak the walls, floors and windows. All that stomach acid rotting the metal work, working into every tiny crack and then pop! Passengers ruptured and the chamber is filled with low pressure farts.
    Cynicism aside, the engineering required is wonderful. A rapid decompression of the pod would be a worry, with injuries similar to those of divers returning to the surface to soon or even Brunel's engineers who worked in compressed air spaces before they understood the dangers of compressed gasses. I imagine the expense will make the journey fairly exclusive too. At least they won't have to worry too much about fire!
    Thank you for another fabulous video Diane.

    She's back! 👍 Perfect presentation! When you showed the "common peoples" behavior i was thinking about them "group jumping" because of course somone would try and 4" is not that big a distance...
    About the dangers when the capsule might get a leak:
    There's something i remember reading from the guys flying so high up that they needed space suits (in the SR71 Blackbird for example): in those heights wihtout the pressure suits the fluids in mouth and lungs would immediately boil! Water boils at exact 100°C, but only at sea level, if you go up to higher altitudes it boils at lower temperatures because of lower air pressure. Same would be true here i guess.

    With apologies, but my brain can't stop me from mentioning that if there was a hole in the pod, the air inside (at one atmosphere pressure) would push the air in the pod out, but there would not be any wind sucking going on. If the hole was small, you could stop the leak with your finger, as one of the astronauts had to do on the ISS when that developed an air leak (alarmingly probably due to a micrometeorite hitting the station). They fixed that with (probably high-tech) duct tape and a patch. A larger tear would be, of course, a serious problem - but there are mechanisms designed to restore air quickly to the tube. This doesn't mean the hyperloop is a good idea or won't be prone to other risks that you mentioned (and others that you didn't) and I love your content. Thank you for your tolerance in allowing me to get this thought out of my head.

    Thunderf00t loves de-bunking the Hyperloop, have a look at his channel.
    It only takes 9 minutes to get to Birmingham, plus the time it takes to depressurize the intermediate chamber to the same pressure as the main tunnel/tube, then pressurize a chamber at the other end. Because you can't just open the tube and destroy the medium vacuum inside, then the pressure wave would not be good for anyone inside a pod, inside the tube.

The Hyperloop is not for 'normal people'. It's for the rich. Like the train in Hunger Games. A fast luxurious mode of transport unattainable for the masses who actually are doing all the meaningful jobs.
    The transport of the future is ... the bicycle.

True story - in Leicester, there used to be a famous - nay, almost legendary! - music pub called the Princess Charlotte, which is now a Korean supermarket (also true, but not the point of the story). Back in the 90s, they closed for redevelopment for a while, and that while became a long while after they dug down under the dance floor and found a cemetery full of Roman soldiers. Yup, all those countless happy evenings I'd spent down at the Charlotte moshing my brains out to hardcore punk bands, we were literally dancing on the graves of people who'd died a long way from home.

    Thank you, thank you for this. It is so necessary for people to hear this. The Hyperloop is the most dumbcock of an idea for public transport since Elon Musk suggested using a tiny sub to rescue a bunch of boys from a crammed cave in Thailand.
    Liking something to come to existence from your imagination doesn't mean it is practical nor sensible. Musk is certainly no Arthur C Clarke, a celebrated sci-fi writer who is both grounded in science and common sensibility. Clarke envisioned GEO satellites and co-invented the aqualung (scuba diving).

    Grime and filth are the least of my worries. Given the deadly dangers of decompression, one had better hope that maintenance on the Hyperloop is not as lacking as it is on the metro. A catastrophic in-transit seal break, even on a 9 minute commute would put off the public on this mode of transport. Perhaps they're planning to issue space suits? I think I'll stick with riding my horse.

    Thanks Diane very well done, love your work, Your great presentation has just exposed the obvious conclusion to the hyper loop development.
    Its not being designed for an atmosphere of 101 kpa, or for a global population. But it would work well on the moon or Mars.
    Its the same with the whole renewable energy thing, It really doesn't make any sense unless you look at it in a context of, that there is no fossil fuel. IE there is no plant life on this planet.
    If you look at it as a global push to develop technologies to get us off the planet it starts to make sense.

    • @DianeSpencercomedian
      @DianeSpencercomedian  Před 3 lety

      Thank you - I am so happy you like my work! Speaking exclusively about the hyperloop, I agree that this is an idea that would work brilliantly on Mars, which was what sparked the alien rant at the end :)

      @@DianeSpencercomedian I think you need a pointy hat & a long black dress to "feel" the vibes of the lines. A bit of moon beam helps light them up. Your Ginger white face with blackened eyelashes would be Ok but obviously the hair might be an issue. Sorry about that!! Perhaps a bare chest might make up for it, to keep people's eyes off the embarrassing bit on top. On second thoughts- perhaps not !!!! do not want to end up as a sacrifice

    I just watched Noob and wanted to say, I was a stand up addict from the '70s to early '90s (it was Carlin's fault) so from grade school through my early career. Even while everything got worse and worse, there were always those brilliant people who could flip it and make me see that as long as you can laugh, it wasn't nearly so bad as it was absurd. Then sometime in the '90s the brilliant funny people were replaced with mean, cynical, and manipulative.
    I can admire Seinfeld's craftsmanship, or Foxworthy's fake humility, but the funny seems to have got lost in the marketing.
    I think you're the real deal and I'm so happy to have found you.

    They should hire you for doing the PooP (Pointing out obvious Problems) for the human paste tube. Most excellent visuals in the proud vein of The Pythons of Monty btw. Very good to see your visage back in the Hallowed Halls of the Tube of You. All the best to You, Kevin, C3PO and Keith.

The gigs are few and far between, but they are steadily increasing in number as restrictions are lifted in the UK. I am so so so excited to be getting back to it. Thank you for being so supportive.
