I speak with Charles “CHIP” Lanskey about all things night vision. More specifically, all the questions someone who is just getting into Night vision would ask if they had a chance to talk to someone as knowledgeable on the subject as CHIP is.

For shooting, I can run a single tube on my non-dominant eye and use my red dot normally through my dominant eye. Since I’m used to shooting with both eyes open and learned to shoot on illuminated scopes with small eye boxes, my brain processes both pictures and lays them over one another without issues. My feeling is anyone can train themselves to take two pictures from two eyes and make them work together with enough practice.

For a Poor-Mans NV setup do the following like I did. (Civilian, so outside of something wild happening this is more than sufficient for hunting, etc. NOT For "Hardcore Use" )
    1. Helmet - Shred Ready Tactical Rescue Helmet- basic bump helmet with nvg shroud - $80
    2. Sionyx Aurora Sport monocular - can be had on sale for ~$400. Color IR night vision with some latency and less FOV and low battery life, but in a pinch should work ok.
    3. Norotos Mount can be had on ebay for like ~$60 or less.
    4. Lionsgear Adapter for Sionyx Aurora $120
    5. For a weapon mounted IR illuminator and laser combo, a PEQ or similar is very pricy, but Russia has you covered with a 2IKS+Klesh IR illum+laser combo for $300. Get from Ivan Tactical, it takes some time to get thru customs, but it works great.
All in I have less than $1k into a basic starter setup. I get full color NV with a zeroed laser and a decent illuminator. Now is this equivalent to anything that uses gen 2+ or 3 intensifier. Nope! If you want great equipment you'll have to drop some serious cash. But again, i'm just a civilian who's primary purpose for this might be hunting, and will likely and hopefully never have to use this against something that shoots back. I'm more than happy with this setup, its not streamlined or "battle proven" but it seems to work for my purpose. and it might for you too.

I just bought an ATN X-Sight 4K for my coyote rifle. $500, and it comes with a ton of other features besides day/night capabilities, most notably a ballistic calculator that can account for drop and wind both. All you need is a good IR illuminator and you can see out to 300 yards or more in total darkness. It even comes with a decent one.
Edit: They don't seem to be mentioning near-IR digital gear at all. That's the black & white stuff you get in good digital cameras and the X-Sight I have. You can get stuff like that for $250 or even less, and they're pretty decent. They're better and cheaper than Gen1+ and some Gen2 image intensifiers.

I started off with not as much money and bought a Gen 2+ monocular (which is tremendously better than what I had in the 101st Airborne in the 80’s which was NADA, CO had the only device in the company) and it’s a surprisingly good performer, especially with my MRO red dots and the mounts allowing me to mount to any rifle it’s rated to handle.

Im glad I got mine when I did. I paid 4k for mine, 2 yrs ago. and couldn't be happier with it. Then another 1500 for my eotech peq 15. Night vision aint cheap, but it's worth it. I'm glad they touched on taking the batteries out. I didn't and had to send it back to the manufacturer to have the spring cleaned. NEVER leave a battery in anything you don't use daily.

My sons pooled their resources together and purchased a night vision scope for me and gave it to me on Fathers Day. I've mounted it on both an AR and my 7mm-08 magazine fed rifle. I also have a rangefinder that links to the scope, which makes shooting a little like a game. I enter a little information (wind speed) and it provides a shooting solution. And does it in less than a second.
It's great for daylight or night. It came with an IR "flashlight" but it's a little weak. A stronger one is my next purchase.
Being in Utah, I need to look up the class Colion came for...
And Colion said he's fallen down the rabbit hole. I think someone pushed him.

Night vision (image intensification) has an expiration date/life cycle. NVG/NVD require maintenance to recharge and/or replace the photocathode. They are also susceptible to damage from bright/daylight. Thermals are a sensitive camcorder.
