Man, this episode was nuts and solidified it for me, after so darn long, The Boys from the Dwarf were back in my life
re: the laugh track. I'm proud to be part of the "laugh track" on three episodes of the second series. I was lucky enough to be in the studio audience for filming because my friend's dad was a cameraman at the BBC in Manchester.
That is awesome =]
The scene where Craig Charles is being 'listers dad' was filmed whilst Craig had a really bad case of flu and was in bed most of the rehearsal week, and the drink he's taking back is orange juice.
Series 10 (as well as series 1-6) was filmed before a live studio audience so the laughs are real reactions to the show.
I think this one is my favourite of series ten, loved the whole debate about Chinese Whispers that ran throughout the episode and Lister having a conversation with his 'dad' was hilarious! I won't give away too many spoilers but Lister does eventually get his guitar back in a series 12 episode 😁
It's an unpopular opinion I know, but I loved Series 8. For me, that was Red Dwarf at its best.
The whole concept of Lister being stuck in space with just Rimmer, Cat and Kryten was a great plot - but I think that by Series 7, they had explored every possible story at that point and exhausted every joke. Bringing back the Red Dwarf crew gave the show new energy and so much more potential - and the Series 8 cast were incredible. Captain Hollister was a great character, as loved as Holly I think.
So for me, Series 10 feels like a backtrack. The show evolved and then they forcefully returned it to some point in the middle of its evolution because that's what the fans preferred - but the evolution of the show ended with Series 8. A new Holly would have been good though (if Norman wasn't available), maybe Rimmer could have had a new colour uniform. He went from beige, to green, to red to blue, which kind of defined the series numbers a bit - and I liked that.
But yeah, Series 10 and 11 feels like Series 7 with Rimmer and a higher budget. That's not to say it isn't good though. I've absolutely loved every episode. I just enjoyed Series 8 more.
Omg finally someone agrees!! I loved series 8 too! 😭
Yeah, RD doesn't have the same punch from S10 onwards. It has some high points, but sometimes it feels like it's just retreading old ground.
I was lucky to have been part of the Audience for this episode (also managed to be part of the first half of The Promised Land (season XIII)) and I laughed so hard during the scene where Lister was talking to his dad! 😂There's even funny cut part of the scene where he walks past Rimmer who has no context on what's going on and he just yells "Look what he's done! It's so unfair!"
You should give the blooper reels a watch. Smeg ups and Smeg outs.
As far as I know Red Dwarf doesn't have laugh tracks...it was recorded in front of an audience...the reason they went back to it is because the staff felt like they got better performances from the actors when they were in front of an audience.
It did for S7.
Two classic scenes in this episode, Rimmer and kryten choosing the new computer and lister talking to his 'dad', Red Dwarf gold
You cut out my favorite line of the episode. "And your saying because I would have cocked all this up, you cocked it all up for me!"
The theory that time has reset to before Ace Rimmer returned has a major flaw. Lister knows he's his own father. That didn't become apparent until after Rimmer first left.
I hadn't heard that theory.
@@JackRascal I heard someone say it last week and I thought...nah!
@@benellis9665 I heard that this is the original Rimmer, but not the time back thing. Though if it hasn't been on screen, it hasn't happened, right?
@@JackRascal so he resigned as Ace Rimmer and returned?
@ItsTerryTime This Rimmer is a hologram of the Rimmer from series 8 (the one that was revived along with the rest of the crew), and who did not have any of the experiences of the hologram Rimmer from series 1-7. The Rimmer from Series 1-7 became Ace Rimmer, and is presumably still out there somewhere.
My poor Rimmie. One of my faves. Craig does such an amazing job
He is great =]
It's a 5-star episode. And like others, I was like: "Oh thank god, Back to Earth was a fluke".
Even Rimmer was ready to celebrate Lister saving the day.
You messed up, Pree... Never should have turned the ship around towards that star!
You can see a lot of the punchlines coming from light years away, but these Dave episodes aren't bad. I believe it's around this point that Chris Barrie started wearing a wig for the part - that's a good wig, isn't it?
I can remember a joke from broadcast that had they 'shown' the breasts, Cat would commented on there being two moons on a collision course.
I've not watched your last few Red Dwarf reactions, because I'm still waiting for you to upload your reactions to 8.8 (Only The Good...) and 9.1 (Back to Earth part 1)!
That first dental jokehit hard and had me in hysterics 🤣🤣🤣 When that dropped I was actively stood in the kitchen swashing Vodka around the massive hole in my tooth as I'm in agony and also fear the drill 🤣🤣🤣
Go to the dentist
Oh no, hope you feel better.
It’s not a laugh track, it’s a live audience
Sounded as bad as a "laugh track" (also known as canned laughter)
It’s definitly canned laughter , Live audience sounds totally different and more spontaneous
@@minkyfran8307 Most of Series X was filmed in front of an audience. I was watching the "extras" dvd of this season today, and not only did they talk about how they put so much effort into having one, but they showed the audience. Some of the stuff they couldn't do in front of an audience and used a track, but most of it was shot in front of a live audience.
I can't wait to see your reaction to the next jc episode
Thank bud =]
@@AfterWorkReactions You are are gonna laugh so hard at the Red Dwarf jc episode.
I agree. All that fuss about the boob size and we never saw them.
Live audience. I don't think this show ever used a laugh track.
Season 7 not only had a laugh track, but it had the awful generic BBC one.. even the cast were relieved to have the audience back in S8!
@@burri06 they didn't film the show in front of an audience, but the finished product was shown to one and that's what was used. Not as great, but not canned laughter either.
😂😂😂❤
The main two storylines were pretty good even if the 'hes his own Dad' schtick was a bit laboured. The Chinese Whispers secondary plot was just racist as fuck and just needs to be cut out
Like Trojan, this was a very good episode after a somewhat creaky first scene. Unfortunately it did introduce one of the slight flaws of this series, Doug Naylor's sometimes out of touch humour. While you don't see it in this video the "Taiwan Tony" thing didn't land right with a lot of the fanbase, as while I'm sure the intention was to laugh at racism, this wasn't made clear enough. Also as the show had always established Red Dwarf in a future where racism was no longer a thing (Craig Charles has talked about this in the past) suddenly having a racist vending machine as part of the JMC didn't really work for the sake of a joke. A similarly controversial part occurs in 'Dear Dave" later in the series.
Other than that, this was a good episode even if it did just rehash the plot of Queeg to some extent.
Personally, as one who is half-Asian myself, I thought the Chinese whispers joke was hilarious. I think people these days are over-sensitive sometimes -- and especially so when it doesn't even concern their own race, which I find particularly weird.
@@RubesGoodBrainCoffeeyour opinion Isn't everyones. Hand wave it away all you want, but it was racist as fuck.
