  • I spent one week in Svaneti, one of the most isolated regions of Europe, in the middle of winter.
    ABOUT SVANETI
Svaneti is located high up in the mountains and it has been geographically isolated throughout the centuries.
This means that, not only is this region renowned for its jaw-dropping scenery, but also its unique culture and customs; Svaneti has its own language, different cuisine and celebrates festivals like Lamproba.
    THINGS TO DO IN SVANETI
See the historic Svan towers; centuries ago, villagers used to live in these due to feuds with nearby villages! 🗼
Learn about Svan culture at the excellent Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography (one of the best collections of Georgian artefacts in the world) ⛰️
Go skiing at Hatsvali Ski Resort ⛷️
Go hiking in the mountains (summer only) 🥾
Recharge in Papas Quel Sauna ( papas_qel?...) 💆
    Culinary masterclass in Latali at Lali's Guesthouse ( / svanuri_kerdzebis_mast... ) 🥟
Road trip to Ushguli, the highest continuously settled village in Europe and a UNESCO site 🏰
WHERE TO STAY IN SVANETI (affiliate links)
We stayed at Paliani Hotel, which is a small friendly guesthouse, with lovely staff, serving great food. www.booking.com/hotel/ge/pali...
Hotel Posta is also a good option - it’s a larger hotel with a sauna and pool. www.booking.com/hotel/ge/post...
    GETTING TO SVANETI
While Svaneti is magical once you’re there, the journey there is long and can be difficult - part of the journey is up a long winding mountain road.
On our winter trip, we had the misfortune to be on the roads in the worst storm in 20 years and were stuck between avalanches for hours!
Usually, conditions aren’t this bad but I recommend leaving a buffer day on either side and avoid the road in stormy weather. Be especially careful in the winter months. In the summer, the roads are better.
The easiest way to reach Svaneti is to take a bus from Tbilisi (or Batumi or Kutaisi) to Zugdidi and then transfer to a local van to Mestia.
Would you visit this scenic corner of Georgia?
