- In this video, I take an overnight ferry from Aberdeen to Shetland and review the experience.
I quite enjoyed the Scotland to Shetland boat, although it was a bit bumpy! But if you're wondering how to get to Lerwick, it's the cheapest option (flights to Shetland are expensive).
I was spending one week in Shetland for Up Helly Aa - videos to come!

I did this trip in 2003, regrettably we had a gale force 9 on way back to Aberdeen. Will never forget that night!!
Lol I know what you mean but I was in a gale 10 and had the best sleep ever.
Great video. During my last ferry crossing from Oslo to Copenhagen the sea was really rough it was something I wasn’t prepared for. The result was disastrous but somehow I have maneged to survive. I will never forget this trip.😭
I loved rough North Sea crossings to the Hook or Hamburg as the restaurants were often very quiet, Hamburg in very rough weather could often be close to 36 hours. The boss preferred to use ferries to Northern Europe as it kept the mileage down on the trucks and border crossings with all the extra paperwork in each country's language. Sailings to Spain in summer were mini cruises and I Was getting paid for it. All long before the Chunnel and EEC/EU.
Excellent - thoroughly enjoyed this. Have done this crossing a few times, but in the middle of summer so completely calm. I remember wandering outside at midnight in complete daylight! You have a new subscriber!
Thanks for the lovely comment! It would be a different experience in the summer for sure :)
I went to Shetland years ago & stayed with a friend, but I flew from Glasgow to Shetland but made a couple of stops before landing in Shetland, so had a good holiday in Shetland, hope you did as well , also enjoyed your video, so well done to the person who made this great video.
Never in a million years would I get on that ferry! A crossing of the English Channel in December was enough for me🤣
Nicely presented dear ,am sure you take happiness to wherever you may travel 😊
Hi, Sea journey rules…
Drink 300 to 500 cc, of good quality Ginger Beer about 2 hours before boarding, and you should be fine.
Great video. Loved it! xx
Really enjoyed your video. You speak really clearly and are very easy to listen to. I’ve now subscribed and look forward to watching more of your videos.
thankyou so much! I post lots of overland travel content from around the world, will be doing some more UK ferries this year hopefully too :D
This is very interesting and informative
I've been on that ferry. It has 2 variants 1/Aberdeen Lerwick direct,2/Aberdeen Kirkwall Lerwick.A bit slower via Kirkwall in the Orkneys.
Yes I believe goes to Kirkwall two or three times a week? We wanted to visit Orkney as well but didn't have the time on this trip!
Great watch thanks and that’s a journey I must do..
You should - I really enjoyed it! Thankyou :)
Great video - thanks ♥️♥️♥️🇦🇺
I did this ferry in gale force 10. Chairs sliding, glass breaking but man, I had the best sleep ever. My room was mid ship on the water line, must of been rocked like a baby.
Both my travel companions had a journey from hell however.
I did that many years ago, in the harbour you could shaved with the reflection from the sea, it was that calm, got on board still tied up and one of my companions felt sea sick, different strokes for different folks. My first crossing Harwich to Hamburg i took advice from everyone in the shared cabin, went the restaurant had sauerkraut mash and Würstchen in splendid isolation. Went back to the cabin where six others were either speaking to the divine, or to the toilet.
good evening my friend. Welcome. Thanks, for participating. Nice to meet you
:)
Take Gravol ginger capsules & ginger tea or good ginger ale to settle your stomach. I wouldn’t eat any strong coloured food - just plain white or beige food because that is what is coming up later on! Boat breaks the waves with it’s bow, eh? ❤ I would love to go to the Shetland Isles because I love the brilliant crime drama filmed there.
Far better to have a great honk to clear the stomach of all that crap food stuck in the corners and in the bends of your body.
Hi cracking video this cu on next one x
Yeah you dont want to be forward on a ship in bad weather. When i joined the navy in 2000 (no longer serving) my first ship was HMS Guernsey and my mess (accomodation) was right at the front of the ship and my bed was positioned so that my head pointed foward and feet towards the stern, absolutely horrendous in rough weather even with rough weather straps to strap you in lol
Thanks for the insight - that must have been rough! Definitely regretted our cabin placing at one point!
Yep the trip can be a right hood honker!
My father was once "sea-sick" in London's Charing Cross Dock on the Thames during a heavy swell!
Oh wow haha!
I wouldn't catch that boat for a million pounds.....I get seasick on a canal boat.
haha yeah maybe not for you if that's the case!
Nice video
I am commenting b4 I’ve finished the vid, is there an all inclusive option? If so how much extra would it be
Although Shetland wishes to retain its Nordic connection, Shetlandic is basically a Scots dialect. Shetlandic Norn died out in the mid nineteenth century but also by that time it was heavily corrupted and even if spoken today, it would be practically incomprehensible to any other Nordic speaker. The Faroe Islands fared better and the language is still intelligible for Icelanders although with some effort. I think there have been some moves to promote Norwegian on Shetland to regain the Nordic connection.
thanks for your insight! I did actually post a more detailed video about Shetland later. There are definitely lots of Nordic elements but I didn't hear enough of the language!
@ClairesFootsteps Having studied Icelandic, I noticed that a lot of vocabulary is derived from Norse in Scottish dialects. You can see its influence too in the Gaelic languages. There is a movement on Shetland to promote Nynorn but personally I think it would be a better idea to promote Nynorsk since it a modern living language spoken widely in Norway which is the original land where Shetland Vikings came from.
@@Islandicus There are a whole swathe of `Scots` words that are Scandinavian.
Such a fantastic upload. You are really sweet and always smiling. You have just got yourself another subscriber.
i used the Hrossey in 2018 and 2019, the northsea was calmer than a bathtub
Really! What month was it?
@@ClairesFootsteps July :-) 2019
@@Xantec ah yeah I think it can be much rougher in winter! This was February :)

Stugeron…. Brilliant meds for sea sickness and I slept like a log 👍
Yes that's what I used, they worked well!
I once got an overnight ferry from a southern English port (cant remember which one) to Denmark and I NEVER got on a ferry again I was so ill. 11 HOURS OF HELL!
Sounds bad 😢
thats were you would find me at the fifa game lol
Hi Claire how are you you have best videos do you have any membership options or way i can support you
Thats nothing compared to that wee 2 hour crossing btween thurso( scrabster) and stromness- Orkney!!
Haha I will have to do that in the future!
The pods aren’t really pods, they’re just slightly bigger slightly more comfy reclining seats, not worth the extra £18 if like me you can’t sleep without stretching your legs out !
On a ship, you don't refer to the different levels as "Floors", they're referred to as Decks. The rooms are referred to as cabins
thankyou, slipped my mind a bit when talking to the camera!
@@ClairesFootsteps ignore them we all knew exactly what you meant 😂
Did you see Jimmy Perez..😅
I went on the irish sea and my friend kept walking around the ship he said he felt better walking around weirdo
It's a ship.
not a ferry?
You said it was a boat. It's a ship.
@@Michael43713 my maritime knowledge isn't amazing so I may be wrong but I was under the impression that ferries should actually be called boats... Quick Google seems to say that's the case but I'm only going by a few sources.
It's a question of size. While it is possible for a ferry to be a boat, the ferry you were on is a ship.
@@Michael43713 fair enough, I didn't know that! So at what size does it become a ship?
Shetland is part of Scotland !.the picts, decendants of modern day Scots inhabited the island's long before the vikings, and the Scots got it back
I have never seen that flag before I wondered which One, it was a white cross on a blue background and of course the Shetlands
It's Shetland not Shet Land
I only said that once 😂 sometimes when you're filming it's easy to pronounce things slightly wrong
I lived snd worked in Shetland you should of got on a airplane its faster
Not as fun though and much more expensive!
@@ClairesFootsteps I loved there 😍
Dont be so naive about Nordic, when they have oil they want independence, when they are struggling they all want the dole
ShetLAND?
Why would anyone want to go to shetland
Wow what a great trip!! 🌊🛳⚓
To travel by boat or train is best!!!🤢🤮 ha ha I`m kidding! 🤣
Ah I much prefer both to flying! :)
