    Jamie, despite your very posh accent that we generally associate with the privileged elite, I like your video right up until the last 3 words... I just don't see how 'Both Votes SNP' is the best message for Scottish Independence, under the D'Hondt method of our voting system, where thousands of votes are deducted because we do well with the 1st votes to get the most Constituency Seats. I will definitely be giving my 1st vote to the SNP in Paisley, but my 2nd vote will go to the next largest pro-Independence party most likely to pick up Regional List Seats in SNP Strongholds like my location and that's the Scottish Green Party. Both votes for Independence. I believe the The Highlands and Islands and the Borders, perhaps also in the North East are the only Regions where 'Both Votes SNP' might be worthwhile. The most pro-Indy MSPs in our Scottish Parliament with less Unionist MSPs is surely worth more than SNP 2nd votes that don't amount to anything and which everybody forgets about? Æ

    • @JamieJauncey
      @JamieJauncey  Před 3 lety +5

      Thanks Andrew. You are not alone in seeing it that way, but my reading of the system is that if the SNP fail to keep their percentage share of the list vote very close to their percentage of the constituency vote they are disproportionately penalised - as happened in 2016. I have the greatest respect for the Greens, but on this occasion there is too much at stake to risk any loss of seats by the SNP - they’re the ones who are going to get us over the line, after all.

    • @BuddyBoy68
      @BuddyBoy68 Před 3 lety +1

      @@JamieJauncey in 2016 our SNP got many more votes than in 2011 and gained 6 more Contituency Seats which meant more deducted votes under the D'Hondt method. Nearly 1 million 2nd votes and they only got 4 Regional List Seats out of it, whereas the Tories got 24 Regional List Seats with far fewer votes because they didn't do so well with the 1st votes. Only 10% of the people who gave the SNP their 1st vote didn't give them their 2nd vote. It seems the system was indeed set up so no one party could dominate our Scottish Parliament. So, if you do well with the 1st votes, it is not possible to do well with the 2nd votes in those same regions. If more of that 90% of people who gave their 2nd votes to the SNP the last time gave them to the Scottish Greens instead, we would have many more Pro-Indy MSPs right now and I expect we would be closer to Independence than we are now. I've asked the SNP, of which I am a member, about this several times and got no response at all. That speaks volumes. Æ

    • @MrBillybonkers
      @MrBillybonkers Před 3 lety +3

      Jamie, I too share the feeling that the D'Hondt count means we cannot give both votes SNP, if we want to win. The system does seem loaded against any party that is successful in the constituency vote. I truly fear that the difficulty in understanding this is going to lose us this opportunity.

    Where have you been for the past 14 years, the SNP have blown your argument out the water, Europe and the EU is in turmoil.

  • @andrewgibbon-williams7974

    This dear old chap is wildly out of touch with global reality; he has bought into SNP-promoted victim-hood big-time. He has a highly optimistic and romantic idea about Scotland's potential. Virtually every argument he makes could be made equally plausibly on behalf of Yorkshire (bigger population!). 60 countries have left the UK? Oh, come on. Presumably he's thinking of former colonies. Never part of the UK. Scotland has never been Guadeloupe! I applaud his criticism of Tory cronyism, but note, he makes no mention of the disgusting cronyism recently exposed in the SNP. What sticks in the gullet is the fantasy that Scotland is somehow different and even superior to the rest of us on these islands. Shear arrogance ! He cares not a jot about the damage his secessionist prescription would do to others nearby (Muslims in our ghetto cities in the north of England, e.g.). In short, he is no more than a Johnsonian scoundrel-patriot concocting seemingly plausible arguments to back up his Anglo-phobic case. What he DOESN'T say is far more pertinent than what he does. Thankfully, the majority of his compatriots are far too pragmatic and level-headed to be convinced by this nonsense. One idea would be to scrap the Barnett Formula, write off the Scottish tax contribution to Westminster, and allow Holyrood to tax independently in order to make up the differential. NOW - that's an interesting scenario! There'd be riots on the streets of Glasgow and Edinburgh.

    • @chickmckenna1
      @chickmckenna1 Před 3 lety +13

      You are wrong of course, but your clouded vision will not allow you to see that. By the way, just look at what you said about countries being former colonies. I am sure your grasp of semantics will allow you to understand that "former colonies" were once countries that we invaded, took control of and robbed. And they claimed their rightful place once more as countries, despite this country trying to prevent that happening. Scotland is a part of the current UK, sadly. Leaving that union does not constitute secession. Leaving the UK is a natural desire for those of us who believe that we should not be controlled and dictated to by people like you and your kind stuck in the decaying and diluting swamp of empire.

    • @andrewgibbon-williams7974
      @andrewgibbon-williams7974 Před 3 lety +4

      @@chickmckenna1 No! You are wrong Chick. I advise you to check out the history of the Union. Clearly, you are ill-acquainted with it. Scotland has NEVER been a 'colony' of England. It amalgamated with it by due legal process under the auspices of a Scottish Stuart monarch called Queen Anne. Attempting to break with that Union is by definition, 'secession'. Just as when the Confederacy sought to detach itself from the American union. They lost. Scotland has never in recent history been 'dictated to' or 'controlled' by Westminster. On the contrary, considering the power wielded by Scottish politicians in Westminster, recently, the opposite would seem to be the case. Christ! I hardly think someone of my generation has been stuck in the swamp of Empire; that entity was over before I was born. I strongly advise more reading up. Concentrate. You may be fortunate enough to be deprived of your ignorant prejudices. Hope so, anyway!

      @andrewgibbon-williams7974 Před 3 lety
