I went to Minneapolis on a 3-week course in American studies in summer 1992. Our first excursion was to a school in Edina outside which a large US flag was waving in the breeze. I asked our host what the occasion was. "Every day is a flag day in America" he said. I don't want every day to be a flag day. Too much flag-waving is a sign of excessive patriotism or aggressive nationalism. We can do without that.

Basically, everyone was supremely relaxed about it, and this is what they should continue to be now, and in the future. We should barely notice the presence or absence of the symbol in a tv interview.

"The cheapest form of pride is national pride. In a person who is full of it, it betrays the lack of individual qualities that he could be proud of, since otherwise he would not hang on to something that he shares with so many millions of others. Whoever has significant personal merits will recognise most clearly the errors of his own nation, since he has them continually before his eyes. But every miserable fool who has nothing in the world that he could be proud of, latches onto his last chance to be proud of something: the nation to which he happens to belong."

Having some national pride, recognising shared qualities and recognising the merits of ones own nation - as well as- having individual qualities to be proud of, recognising the errors of ones own nation and being proud of ones own achievements, are not all mutually exclusive attributes, ideals or opinions.
"Only a Sith deals in absolutes"
      - Obi Wan Kenobi (A long long time ago).
To be clear though, I wouldn't even say I'm _proud_ to be British, since logically, I can only be proud or ashamed of something I've personally done. However, I entirely dismiss the idea that _national pride_ per se is a bad thing.
If I were to even loosely agree that I have national pride, I'd prefer to elaborate on it by saying it's more thankfulness that I have for my nation. I'd prefer to explain that by the word _pride_ I mean how privileged I feel to be a part of a nation which has done so much in history to further the progress of the human race. A nation which still continues to be in a large part, a shining light to the most pitiful peoples of the world.
Categorically, no nation is or has ever been perfect. But it doesn't help only to recognise and condemn a nations flaws...no matter the importance of that sort of recognition. Surely there also ought to be recognition and celebration of a nations accomplishments, overall character and attributes.

Sorry.. All i have seen for the last few years, is the scottish flag & the eu flag! Yet there were no calls for them to be brought down? There is NOTHING wrong with flying the union flag & it is something to be proud of! 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

I mean Nicola and wee Eck never try and win favour with a flag 🤔🤔🤔🤔
Apart from when Scotland play Rugby or Football and they transform into biggest flag wavers that ever existed.

Why is it such a problem if somebody flies our nations flag? I would happily fly our flag from my property with pride. A flag is symbolic of our country. Far prefer the union jack than the EU flag. I am Welsh but would never dream of a united Wales. God help us if that ever happens. Not that it would because the pro left wing woolly back minority are not very popular with the more sensible majority of people.
