I'm so glad you went back in, I didn't comment because I didn't know where to start and I was far too tired to coherently comment. I was going to come back today and try to sort it out. Glad some others beat me to it. I am no expert but I probably have a dozen or so under my belt.
I feel better about this one. I plan to do the one in truck to eventually so I'll get another crack at it. Learning new things with the Volvo, which was the goal, do new stuff.
I used a shim pack that did not have the lip for the loose shims. About 6 months later the shim pack behind the ring gear was spit out and grinding on the axle. I used loose shims to get the thickness then i bought oem shims for mine. I used a big C-clamp to clamp from the top to the bottom on the axle housing, this springs the housing making it alot easier to put the carrier in with the shims.
That was a good catch.
For sure.
Glad you came back and explained things. I remember seeing videos where people used the original crush sleeve and machined it out to set everything and then replaced it at the end. I'm actually surprised the factory shim sizes were as close as they were since you changed the carrier qnd gear.
Talked to a few people that said they've just reused both the factory shims and worked well. We'll see how this holds up. Definitely better now that it was.
Mistakes were made, that why we circled the problem FORD!
You go girl!
Forget the factory shims, those were for the other ring and pinion and the depth of the pinion is what determines the shimming of the carrier for preload
most of the time if you are making a tiny ratio change 3.73 to 4.11 you sometimes can just swap the factory shims and it will go right back in and be damn close
The total distance between the bearings doesn't change so the factory shims will still be correct. Now its possible that some of the shims will need to be moved from one side to the other to affect the gear pattern but the overall preload needs to stay the same.
Is the carrier exactly the same length as the factory unit?
I didn't measure it, I measured the factory one, but forgot to measure this one before I put it in.
I’m glad some people caught all of that! Would have lasted not long lol has me thinking did I catch all this on mine hahaha
