- How Abagnale got captured was not the same in real life! Abagnale's capture in the movie was represented as a tense standoff in a warehouse where Hanks manages to con the conman. It was somewhat less dramatic in real life when someone saw Abagnale on a wanted poster and recognized him while he was shopping for groceries. Moreover, Tom Hanks's character, Carl Hanratty, was a fictional character that was created for the movie. He is actually an amalgam of several agents who pursued Frank. Interestingly, the real Frank Abagnale also made an appearance in the scene where the movie Abagnale got captured. To be more precise, he was the one who grabbed Frank from Carl Hanratty and put him in the police car!

Main inspiration of Hanks FBI agent is drawn from the FBI agent Frank is friends with and mentors after frank was caught
It was one of the FBI agents who caught him that remained friends with him until the end. It was based on Joseph Shea.
Though there were many other FBI agents who pursued him. But Joseph was the closest. And Carl Hanratty was inspired by the amalgamation of those FBI agents and at last at the end Joseph Shea too.

Most of it was real but he did make some stuff up , ya know like a fisherman saying how big the fish that got away was. But he actually pulled a lot of this stuff off.

He is a criminal and he did have some cons but not anywhere close to the level depicted by himself or in the movie. The guy didn’t even steal more than $1500 in counterfeit checks lol
