This song was actually written by Lionel Ritchie, and he knew that Kenny was the man to sing it. Lionel, Prince, and many other successful artists write songs, and decide that they think someone else could sing it better. Prince gave Nothing Compares to You by Sinead O'Connor. Ed Sheeran has written for Justin Bieber, Sia has written for Rihanna, and John Lennon wrote Fame and gave it to David Bowie. This is unbelievable common in the Music industry.

Part of the charm of Kenny Rogers' voice was that it wasn't a 'clear' or 'pure' tone. It sounded more genuine and relatable to the general audience. The raspiness, or 'gravel' of his voice seemed to be an echo of warm, audible masculinity.

Love Kenny Rogers music from when he was with the First Edition (60's-70's) to his solo career. He was a great story teller in many of his songs like "Coward Of The County" & "The Gambler". He had so many hits "Lucille", "Through the Years", "She Believes In Me", "You & I" (written by the Bee Gees) etc. He did a lot of duets such as with Kim Carnes "Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer", with Sheena Easton "We've Got Tonight" & with Dolly Parton "Islands In The Stream". He also did quite a few duets with Dottie West.

Kenny Rogers was a master of using "vocal fry", what you described, Bisscute, as the "roughness" in his singing. It's a vocal technique for adding intimacy and vulnerability to the voice, but it's difficult to control. Most singers will get a natural "fry" to their voice when it is pushed to the point of exhaustion. In a live performance though most singers won't even attempt it. And yes, the ladies loved it. Thank you for sharing this one. 🙂

Ok, Miss Cute, no, that's actually always been Kenny's voice. He started out (as far as I know) in a group called The First Edition, later Kenny Rogers & The First Edition with some great songs like, Something's Burn and Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town, and he sang just like this then, so what you are hearing *_IS_* the sound that *_IS_* the attraction. I think you'd like both of them. Kenny is a true crossover artist, as even those two songs would show, the first a definite rock song, and the second showing a great country flair ... about a soldier who was wounded in the war, singing to his love who had decided she wants something else.

Alright, my lady! Ha! So you've finally gotten to one of the two Kennys. There's another Kenny, but I'll get to that in a minute. This actually was Kenny Rogers when he was probably in his prime, or at least the height of his career. He had been around for a long time, had been in different groups, and had crossed over various genres. He had been Rock/Pop/Jazz and then at his height, crossed over into Country, granted, at a time when Country was pretty Poppy, so there wasn't necessarily that much of a difference. By the time he really reached the height of his fame as a solo artist in the 70s and 80s though, he was already a bit of an older dude, and already had a white beard. So when you see him there, that's not an older artist doing one of his old hits, like Frank Sinatra or something. That's when the song came out and was one of his biggest hits.
As he mentioned there, the song was written by Lionel Richie, who I always like as a kid because he had my name, and you might actually know him from American Idol. He had been in a group called The Commodores, and then went solo, and was a big pop artist in the 80s. Lots of good songs to check out. I guess at the time, Kenny Rogers and him became buddies, and had like a songwriting partnership for a while. One of Kenny Rogers' other biggest hits was "The Gambler", which was a big deal when I was a little boy. Off the success of that song, they made like a handful of TV movies inspired by the song, where Kenny Rogers played a gambler in the old West, that I don't remember, traveled around from place to place, playing poker, and getting into trouble, I guess, but a classic song!
This is a little off topic, but just to provide some context when I say "TV movie", it was a while different world back then as compared to today. TV and movies were considered to be two seperate worlds. Because TV had to work quicker, on less of a budget, often with different technology, there was just so much more of it, and advertisements aside, was essentially being broadcast for free, it just wasn't expected to be the same quality as films. The quality of TV now adays is amazing, and quite honestly, sometimes more cinematic than the cinema. That was not the case then. They were really thought of as two different art forms, and often, you got stuck in one or the other, but it was difficult to switch between the two, and particularly if you were on the TV side, you were looked down upon by the cinema side. Lots of people's careers did start in TV, with the goal of making it over into film, and some were able to pull off doing both, but it was less common, it was hard to make that jump out of TV, and many never did, and unlike today, where there's probably more oppurtunity in TV, back then, you wouldn't have seen someone with a successful film career doing TV. If you were, it was probably a sign that your career was in bad shape. So, when I say that they made a handful of Kenny Rogers Gambler TV movies, you have to kind of understand that they were quickly thrown together, and aren't going to be super high quality, but that's just how TV movies, meaning movies made by TV to be broadcast on TV, were. That's just how it was then, and when you watched a TV movie, you knew what you were getting, and you weren't really meant to judge them compared to a proper movie.
Then there is also Kenny Loggins! Who was probably younger than Kenny Rogers, though they were basically popular in the same era of the 70s and 80s. I've maybe pitched him to you before. Probably when you did your Bissflix reaction to Top Gun. Kenny Logins was a great song writer, and in the 70s and 80s when it became more popular to use contemporary popular music in the soundtrack of movies, he was kind of the king of that. His songs were in at least five or six different movies from the time, and some of them were written specifically for that purpose. You migh as well react to both Kennys now.
In fact, I think all three of them participated in "We Are The World". This I have mentioned to you before, and now there's a new documentary on Netflix about it, but short version is, Quincy Jones is a legendary music producer, Stevie Wonder is a legendary musician and songwriter, he wrote this song, then Michael Jackson at his height jumped on board, and they gathered together a large group of famous artists at the time, to record the song for charity. When I was a kid, there was a famine in Ethiopia, and probably other places in Africa, so that was the big charity then. Well, that, and the whales, I guess, but as children we were always guilted to empty our plates because there were starving children in Africa. Anyways, I probably told you before that you might not even be in a place to recognize all the people in the "We Are The World" video. I can't even recognize all of them, but now you'd probably at least know a few. Either way, it was a very iconic thing from the 80s.

Kenny Rogers released this NEW song on his Greatest Hits album. That is how much he knew he had a monster hit in Lady. The CD come out at the end of 1980 and he absolutely ruled Valentine's Day 1981. EVERY man bought it for their girlfriend/wife. (They might as well have renamed Valentine's Day as Kenny Rogers Day).

Are you sure CD's were available in 1980 to the general public? I had to go back and check myself cause I was unsure but it seem's it was 1982 even though they were made in 1979.

@@UtopiaBlue68 You're right. It was the cassette tape or LP. Those were the options.

There is a nice video of Lionel (who wrote this) and Kenny singing this years later. Even if you don't 'react' to it, I would suggest watching it as it will be special now that you have seen and heard this.

You thought it was his aging voice when actually I'd say that low raspy voice is his trademark and at this time he was at his Zenith the height of his singing career I'd say. Just like your reaction when you heard his low voice as you called it and those eyes that look of yours of realization. Like another female reactionist said, he's a panty dropper, did you hear those girls. I was in my teens around this time and I was envious of Kenny Roger's. Of course at the time I thought what do they see in this old guy. Now I'm 56 years old and I fully understand, I appreciate the man and his music. May he rest and peace. Thank you Biss for another wonderful reaction.

Kenny would have been 85 years old in one week from now (March 20th) and could probably still pull a lady out of her senses just by singing this to her.
