I'm 50 and when I was young I dismissed Kenny Rogers absolute talent while my dad just adored him. Now I am old enough to realize men like Lionel Richie and Kenny Rogers are few and far between. My dad had this kind of love for my mom. Now he is gone and I think about the man he was and how much I was blessed to be his daughter.

There is something he does, so subtle, that shows how comfortable, and in command, he is when he is live on stage... he is walking, singing... and without any effort, just a subtle flick of the wrist, he moves the mic cable out of his way.... it goes unnoticed by most... but says everything about his comfort in front of an audience.

Love this song and "Through the Years" are two of my favorite Kenny Rogers songs. Now that my husband and I approach our 50th anniversary "Through the Years" has special meaning and my husband has always considered me his "Lady". I have always loved Kenny's voice no matter what genre he is singing.

Kenny Roger's gives me the same vibes as Michael McDonald. I get soulful, peaceful, warm vibes from their music. Especially the song called, "I Keep Forgetting." It's 🔥 fire.

Thank you for the reaction. This song had all the ladies falling in love with Kenny! So smooth and buttery. Lionel wrote this specifically for Kenny.
Both country and R&B got their roots in the church and the musicians can easily transition from one genre to the other. Some are more successful, such as Kenny, than others. So glad you finally did this one. I had a hunch you'd like it!

My brother, Kyle, absolutely loved Kenny Rogers. Then he played it for me on a record player, yes a record player. I am old. I was probably 6 years old at the time and I was like, holy shit! This dude is a beast. I didn't know what country music was or what R&B was, I just knew that his soul came through so I could hear it. I was hooked. His songs are absolute treasures. I love that he got Lionel Ritchie to write a bunch of songs for him, because it changed him from just a great country artist to a universal star. It was the pivotal moment in his career. "Lady" is my favorite Kenny Rogers song of all time. And I love so many of them. I play it for my wife and when I look over at her, it takes her breath away. That is how unbelievable this guy could sing. Hat tip. He will go down as the greatest male country singer to crossover into mainstream music. I know, I know Taylor Swift has him beat. But no guy does. That I can say with confidence. Especially considering the fact of when he was a star. What about Kenny Rogers in the era of CZcams and social media? OMFG. His star would have been the grandest of them all. His duets with Dolly, Sheena Easton, Dottie West and Kim Carnes and Tim McGraw were classics. Kenny Rogers is one of kind. His music will live on forever. Rest easy, Kenny.

Back in the late 90s, my sister and her high school choir sang with Kenny Rogers and Sawyer Brown at a Christmas concert at the Breslin Center in East Lansing,. Probably one of the proudest moments of my sister's life outside of having her kids.
Also, I think Lionel Ritchie wrote "Lady" in one sitting in the bathroom just for Kenny. 🤣

Little tip: Lionel pitched this song to the Commodores and they turned it down before he had the lyrics written down. Then, Kenny approached him and he pitched it to him with an incomplete verse and finished it in the recording studio. It was a big hit and a classic!

yes, the Commodores as a band declined because they'd already done at least two other songs with Lady as the theme and didn't want to do another. I recall Lionel saying he went looking for Kenny to sing it because he felt the voice is right.

Kenny Rogers is mostly country but he has covered several genre. I grew up listening to him and he holds a very speacial place in my heart. He has one of the richest and soulful voices ever. He is a great storyteller with his voice. He can really get emotions across. One of my favorite songs by him is Ruby. A real heartbreaker, he tells the story so well. My hubs put this song on when he proposed and managed to have it played somehow every anniversary. The most memorable was when I was working at the VA and it came on the "radio" and everyone in the office started singing flash mob style including patients ... He popped out in a patient gown with a rose in a biohazard collection bag. 😂
Honestly, we weren't even in the gown section of the building. I think he just want to show off his hairy legs.

Many MANY years ago, when i was young, i fell in love with Kenny Rogers. Rock and psychedelic rock was his original genre. There is even a video of him singing "I Just Dropped In to See What Condition My Condition Was In", with his band The First Edition. Please find it and react to it for us. I promise you won't be sorry. You will love it.

Kenny's career spanned more than 60 years and 21 number 1 hits. That growl in his voice was so recognizable and made women everywhere swoon. If you have to pick a genre, he's generally considered country, but his early career (with the group The First Edition) was more rock and throughout his career he had many cross-over hits including jazz, folk, and pop. He had great storytelling songs such as "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town", "Lucille", "The Gambler" and "Coward of the County" among others, as well as love songs like this one ("Lady") - "She Believes In Me,", "Through The Years” and "Buy Me A Rose" come to mind. He did duets with a number of artists, probably best recognized for those with Dolly Parton including "Islands in the Stream" and "You Can't Make Old Friends". He passed in 2020 at 81 years old (RIP). As others have mentioned, the live version of Kenny and Lionel singing this together is phenomenal not only for the music but for the genuine love and friendship you can see they had for each other.

The story behind this song is hilarious and is well explained and told by the two of them in numerous live recordings.
Lionel tailored this song very specifically for Kenny when he asked Lionel if he could write a song for him.
On meeting up with Kenny he discovered Kenny had just met a beautiful upper class woman, that gave him the inspiration to write this classic for him.
This song created a deep brotherly relationship between the two of them.
