Madden NFL 21 is a terrible game for many reasons. The game is shallow, with 89 features from older games completely absent, the gameplay is awful, bugs and glitches are everywhere, and yet the game still sells thanks to an exclusive NFL simulation license, game changers/mut streamers promoting the game, and "madden simps". It's a bad game with a perfect storm of chaos allowing it to be successful. It's a scam.

The absolute saddest thing is John Madden's vision for his series was a football game that wasn't just a video game. He wanted a learning tool that taught people football concepts and fundamentals. A video game that taught you how to actually play this game like in real life. Madden has become so far from this that I would say it's the exact opposite. For shame EA, for shame.
It feels like the 2k creators actually had fun and wanted to make an expansive gaming experience when making their football game

The worst part of all of this is that EA has vast, endless resources to fix these problems, but simply choose not to do anything. That's the part that bothers me the most. It's not that they can't fix these issues - they just won't.

To be fair NBA 2k isn't simulation basketball either. Game is trash and I am tired of them! Been playing religiously since 2k10. I want NBA Live to be that GAME for the NBA franchise. Their gameplay is way more realistic currently. It has problems but for Madden I don't get all the hate for it?? I rarely play it, but it seems you guys have the same problem we do for 2K. Riddled with pay-to-win microtransactions and terrible gameplay with legacy issues. Most of the community here in NBA hates 2K. Be careful what you guys wish for because 2k is awful!

Madden players are like battered housewives.
I’ve been saying this for years. EA sells the same game every year. They refresh some of the textures and colors to give it a “new” look, then market it as a “brand new” game. EA has ruined sports gaming. Look at what happened when EA had sustained competition (NBA 2K) they ended up discontinuing NBA Live because they had to ACTUALLY make improvements to the game or they would fall behind.
Man don’t get me started on madden gameplay it is so slow and unreleastic it just a pain to play.. i do not like it to say the least

One time my punt returner just slid of the field and I started at the 3 yard line when I could have started at the 30
Yeah. It plays very slowly. I wish it had that ncaa 06 feel of speed. There was a difference in a 88 and a 97 speed. It’s still a difference now, but it felt like the number ratings were more relevant, consistent, accurate, and dynamic back in the mid 2000’s genres of madden and especially ncaa games

The draft in madden franchise for the last two years have been god awful. Finding anything 71+ is a miracle it feels like, which isn’t realistic. The run game is overpowered in online which isn’t realistic either. It would be fine if stats were equal, but time and time again your 90+ d-line will get pushed off the ball every play by 84 ovr lineman. New announcers would be great. Making ultimate team less of a cash grab would be great. Rewards in MUT should be better for those who don’t want to make it a cash grab. I think the crowd and fan changes would be a nice bit of change for the game. Unique crowd noises or interactions depending on the field. I agree that the animations are buggy af. One thing I think could be changed however is abilities. I think they could still make a realistic game with abilities to add a little extra dynamic to the players, but in turn not make game solely reliant on the abilities. If you don’t have abilities on your players in MUT it puts you at an extreme disadvantage to your opponent which is just ridiculous. I think making the AI smarter is also something that could be added to help improve the game. Some dude runs the same play over and over again and you keep making your adjustments, but the same guy keeps burning you, because your DB acts like he’s on his last brain cell. It would add more of a dynamic to the game, where you actually have to have a scheme to run on offense instead of running the exact play or 3 plays every time. Lastly just the basic bug fixes. Whether it be glitchy animations in the game, player faces not matching etc. Basically things that should already be fixed but won’t because EA doesn’t care.

When I was a kid I dreamed of working to make Madden games. Have a passion for both football and video games, and have experience programming, so I imagined what better job would I want.

I used to get Madden every year for my birthday in August and would be absolutely stoked. I think I asked around 2009-10 for my family to stop, and I’ve barely played the games since. Holy heck, I didn’t realize how bad it’s become. I still have my NFL 2K5 copy and I’ve adored that game.

I played most of the games you mentioned and all the football and NCAA games from the NES to the PS4. I just cant do it anymore. Even before 2012 they were obviously going hard with the copy paste. i freekin just want to play a good NFL game!! and the quick blurb you said in one of them is true, EA can make a decent sports game in this era. why is Madden so screwed up!!
Nothing more frustrating in madden then when you throw a fade to the back corner of the end zone and you get intercepted because they force the DB animation

I use to be a MUT addict back when it first came out, spent thousands on packs for a good 2-3 years playing it. Took alot to stop playing it, so much that i totally stopped playing Madden altogether for about 2 years. Shit should be illegal, it almost ruined my life

I don’t believe Stockholm Syndrome is what I would use at 21:30. I would instead relate it more to the Sunken Costs Fallacy, which is the idea that when you’ve already spent so much money/effort/time on something, you force yourself to continue just to make it worth it. It’s common in gambling, which explains why MUT users feel it.

Thanks for making these videos. I competed in Madden tournaments from 03-07 and sporadically after that. I stopped completely in 09. These videos are spot on. MUT has destroyed the game. It makes me so sad. Madden was such a huge part of my life. I met so many people traveling over the years and it just really pisses me off that EA has destroyed the game. Again, thanks for making these man. I really appreciate it. You did such a great job.
I think I love you bro. Thank you for making this video. I too got banned 3 years ago from the EA forums for complaining about Madden. I even have a couple of short videos if you ever need them for any reason on my very small and just personal channel of blocking...or lack there of.
Thank you for the trip down madden sucks life. I remember back in the day I had so much fun with Madden 02, and the expansion draft. I remember playing college football and porting it over to Madden. I became that guy who bought the game every year, and played it to the point of breaking the game. I slowed down after the last college game, as what was the point of having fake drafting players. 15 to 18, I bought but got rid of it. I moved on from Madden when 20 hit. Over the years, I watched a good game give away to greed, becoming a poor product. Watching the modes change, losing allot that made Franchise good, I found that EA stopped caring about the consumers. The gameplay alone is insane in moments when you play well and the the AI does something not possible to every happen. Best part that always sucks, is the idea to have a competitive AI, as I was kicking the computer by 48 points, only to see my team suck in the second half and lose by 10. I understand football, as a former player, and spent time learning the coaching to know that Madden is lacking true Football. Madden football makes the name Madden a sour mouth, while the living legend is wondering why as the greed took over football. Giving that I am writing this, I am one of those people pushing for EA to drop the game and let someone do it better. I am also one of those guys who went back to a ps2 and 3 to play the best versions of the game, both college and Madden,, while still playing Ncaa football 14 revamped mode....which is far better then Madden in so many ways. Thank you for speaking for the people who need a voice to shout out to the EA people. We must stand together. Thank you for your time.

If you want real Madden, pick up 05 and 06. Madden 20 is awful.

WOW you've earned my sub SoftDrink. I've watched a lot of RyanMoody videos in my day, and I have owned Madden 98 -2015, then 20. This video and your prior one are spot on and why I stopped buying these, I THANK you. Maybe one day we can enjoy getting that new yearly madden again and be excited about trying to make our favorite team a dynasty in Franchise mode, or get back to seeing our created superstar's beat-down apartment transform into a multi-millionaire dollar loft. Look forward to seeing more content.

Great work on part 1 and part 2. I knew about some of the features that have been lost, like play creation and custom teams, but I didn't realize exactly how many features were lost over the years that I would personally love to have in a football game. Not to mention the features in other football games that madden never incorporated. There's still room for a truly great football game, but I don't think EA will ever make it with their monopoly on the sport in video games.
I recently got a huge hit of nostalgia & decided to pick up Madden 22 after about a decade since buying my last madden game. I really enjoy the arcade style play with the x-factors and big plays, but that's probably all after about 50 hours of playing. What really got me excited for the game (and ultimately disappointed me the most) was Face of the Franchise (FF). I haven't seen RP that bad since high school English class when my classmates had to read roles out loud for Romeo and Juliet.
Cut scenes where the animation doesn't match the intensity of the voice, animated characters silently mumbling to themselves before and after delivering their line, watching the back of the head of the person delivering the line. Scenes where half the conversation is voiced, and the other half gets a couple words, then plain text. Scenes where if you want to skip to the next line of dialogue you find yourself at the end of the conversation or making a choice with the context provided being what's on screen. I could go on. This mode feels like it was literally an afterthought. They had the opportunity to provide an amazing experience, but instead I'm stuck playing a game with rp that removes you from any immersion, is unimpressive, and is ultimately a HUGE disappointment.
My experience with this kind of mode extends to the time(s) I played The Show '19 RTTS mode, and I remember having a positive experience. I don't think the rp was anything to write home about, but it wasn't that bad. I don't even care for baseball and I would almost rather play that mode over madden's FF. Hell, if there were a game out there with comparable arcade style play and better RP I might actually get it as soon as I could afford it.

The younger players have no idea of the features they missed out on in the early 2000's havent bought madden since 2017 and I kept that on the cheap when I use to be a game fly member.
I started playing madden on madden 13 and have every madden since then and yet the game just hasn’t ever been good, like the animation in which a linebacker closes a 10 yard gap on a wr in .2 seconds to block a pass. but watching this video has almost convinced me to go out and buy a xbox 360 or PS3 so that i can play these games. they seem so much better than what i’ve grown up with.
@@benjihayman1377 That's because they were so much better. lol I grew up playing Madden since '98. And I personally saw the decline as I bought the game every year. Everything in these 2 videos is 100% true. If you have a PC I recommend getting an emulator and picking up All-Pro Football 2k8.
@@benjihayman1377 before you do that I believe softdink has another video on his channel where he briefly discusses emulators which basically trick your pc into thinking its a ps2 so you can play the old maddens with an Xbox one controller, better graphics, and updated rosters all without paying for a whole console, just gotta get the old games

I’ve had every madden since 96 on sega and man this video hit a chord man. I’m older don’t play much anymore but the game play is definitely stale glitchy and the game lacks depth. People don’t even know EA original saying wasn’t “it’s in the game” it actually use to be “ if it’s in the game, it’s in the game” they’ve been taking things out of the game for years, sometimes they’ll bring a feature back pretending it’s new when in reality it’s a lesser version of a feature they once took away. Great video dude!
The problem is that everyone who complains about the game still buys it every year. I stoped buying it after 18. I don't regret it.

I’m wondering if we could sue them for false advertising. They claim that the game is sim, but it is clearly arcade or competitive at best. Neither of those is simulation. By the way, another well researched video softdrink. We’ll get the game we deserve one day.

I’m pretty sure you could get some gameplay footage of shitty looking game play you could at least make it so the NFL has to open the license of to some competition. A law suit against EA for making a truely awful simulation football game may make them re-evaluate the companies that want to be in the business with the NFL. We would get some really amazing looking and playing games if they opened it back up. Maybe a company that won’t pay the most for the license, but could build royalties into the contract that would make the NFL more money in the long run because the game would sell like hot cakes. Instead of EA getting flithy rich at the expense of the NFL’s reputation. They are only paying a fraction of what they themselves are racking in. There are ways out there that the NFL can pull in more with a different company. They just need to seek it out instead of doing what’s easy instead of what is best for all parties, the NFL, the gaming company, and most importantly the fans, whom these two entities could not exist without. Whew…
I used to love NFL 2K5. I didn't know about the history, but I always found Madden unsatisfying as a sporting simulation. I prefer Cyberball for pure arcade sports. :;

I'm very late to this video, but thank you for putting into the words the disappointment with buying Madden 4 years ago after not playing it (too busy and broke to afford gen 5 consoles) for 8 years. I havent bought it since because of my complete disinterest in what it had become, and you put it into words! Thank you! I hope, though I am sure I will be equally disappointed, they dont ruin the next NCAA football, which was my preference of the two franchises when they peaked.

I couldn't put my finger on what was so wrong with the game on franchise mode. You are 100% right that success is based in animations. Even after I win the superbowl on all-madden I feel nothing. I actually want to stop playing even though i achieved success. Loved part 1 and 2 of this series!
My favorite part is how you describe how most of the community feels. In every video you and Ryan Moody put up explains perfectly how most people feel, at least how I feel towards EA/Madden
Madden really needs to separate Ultimate team from the base game. Ultimate team should be free and standalone from Madden. Only then the problems would be solved.

It’s unbelievable what Madden has become. Madden 05 was probably the peak, IMO. I really miss the old franchise mode. I haven’t bought a single Madden game in a long time. I don’t even bother trying them out. It’s sad. I’m glad you posted this. Pretty much everything you said was on point. I hope more people start realizing this.

There is NOTHING they can do to save this franchise until they change the physics engine.
When the foundation of every single action within a sports game is built on animations, it prevents the game from ever becoming a decent simulation. There is no room for authenticity to play out within an animation based sports game. All you're left with is a frustrating, repetitive mess.

I couldn't care less about sports yet your Madden videos are still so engaging to me. I'm glad I don't play sports games because if I did I'd be super bummed over the complete lack of options out there now. What EA and NFL are doing is enraging and the EA Sports games are the epitome of everything wrong with modern triple a games.
I'm not gonna lie, watching that montage of bugs might genuinely be the hardest I've laughed so far this week lol
