I got early access to the Elden Ring Network Test. I expected a brief slice of the world - perhaps a boss if I was lucky. Instead I experienced a massive amount of dense territory briming with secrets, and I defeated 8 unique bosses. My key takeaway: so far, Elden Ring is exactly what I had hoped it would be.
Early access to the network test provided by Bandai Namco.

There are so many open world games, and yet there are so few that have this design philosophy, i.e. a focus on player autonomy in an abundant, creative open space.
Here comes the hot take train, Choo Choo!
"Open world" shouldn't be the foundation of a game's identity. Unless I'm forgetting something, the best open world games seem to already have a strong identity as something else, and use the open world formula to enhance that thing. BotW is a Zelda game that uses the open world formula, Elden Ring is a Soulslike game that uses the open world formula. Now, given, I haven't found the chance to play Outer Worlds (although I really want to and plan to soon), so that game could prove me wrong, but from what I hear it would be like an immersive sim that uses the open world formula. Either way, I feel like games as an industry have put too much of a focus on open world as a new approach, when at the end of a day it's near as arbitrary and general as the color red. Can you make a good game with red as a central piece of the palate? Of course! But you have to have something more to design around, otherwise what you end up with will be somehow both bland and overindulgent.
Or maybe I'm utterly delusional, tbf I don't play a lot of AAA games, so I'll need someone somewhat more educated to check me on this. :P
@@LazarNaskov Yeah man, I agree. I was gonna write about how it's great that the open world stuff is underpinned by a SoulsBorne game, but didn't for brevity.
@@LazarNaskov yeah a game like Batman Arkham knight is a great open world that's was a linear gane before but I think any open world could be good they just make them too big and uninteresting rdr2 world was amazing but they had hundreds of millions and 7 years to make a big world interesting and ac makes a bigger world in 2 years with a tenth of the money and it's dull valhalla was okay but way to big and same feeling
@@jaybabe7767 that’s true, but I’d say that no budget can pay for good design, Outer Wilds is an indie game which got amazing reviews all around.
That being said, a larger budget can’t hurt, especially for something like ac
@@LazarNaskov TBH Outer Worlds didnt feel like a open world game to me. More like Mass effect.
Ok, the dragon appearing as field boss is one thing, but for them to design it to behave in the manner it did is mind blowing. From could've just had it straight up beeline agro the moment you hit it line of sight, but they took the time to have it behave like a beast would and later recognize you as prey. It just the little things man. I'm really on that hype train now.
Yeah, They definitely learned that form Monster Hunter.
@@ebenezerspludge8369 lol the ai in monster Hunter is dumb as hell though
@@bbtbbbbtbb3166 Ha ha Monster hunter? That game has the best AI ever. DS games you can get a boss stuck on a wall, MH you will never see that happen. The monsters have tell tale signs when they get tired with things like Salivating at the mouth, Limping, broken parts depending on where you hit them and when they get tired they will go eat or sleep. They have had amazing AI since the first game on the PSP. I think you are thinking of a different game. From soft has said they took MH as inspiration for their boss fights.

"I'm aware of the discourse complaining about the fact that Elden Ring doesn't look next gen enough. Okay (laughs) whatever I don't fuckin' care. This game looks incredible." Best response to a ridiculous discourse.
Agreed
The discourse isn't ridiculous, you just meat ride from software way too much
I'm sorry but it's really not ridiculous, it's not about looking next gen, it's about looking graphically good enough for a game that comes out in 2022, and what i have seen of this game even at 4k is embarassing on this aspect.
There are games from 2014 that looks better than this graphically. I'm normally the first guy to say that graphics don't make a game, but here it's really to painfully average, the rocks, trees or grass all looks really old.
It's cray how some people have double standards regarding graphics, the first demo of Halo Infinite got people mad and the game delayed because apparently it wasn't good enough, but i'm sorry it looked way better than this. Skillup spent a section of his Far Cry 6 reviews saying that the game looked graphically dated, how can you say that then say this game looks incredible when Far Cry 6 looks MILES better than Elden Ring in this department.
This previews honestly sound ridiculously like his preview of Cyberpunk.

Im glad to hear you can get flasks for killing, that allows for the same thing Bloodborne was trying for, without them becoming items you have to grind for
I never had to grind for blood vials once, just everytime I was done leveling up I spent my B.e change on vials and would end up with hundreds of vials left over by the end of the playthrough.
@@clockworkNate yeah I was very focused on min-maxing on my first playthrough because it was also my first souls game so I never spent any money on anything in the store because I wanted those sweet levels, but I also didn’t mind going through yharnam 100 times while listening to a podcast to get vials, very calming and I didn’t have to do it again in the game
For me I would just go to central Yharnam with the eye rune and just get a ton of vials by the end of a run. Still prefer the estus system though

Oh that flask refill is now the best idea. It makes the game more accessible which is what I've always wanted in souls games. The health recovery in bloodborne was my fav idea.
Yeah it's clever. They've merged Sekiro's life/health system with DarkSouls estus flasks. Meaning progression is always possible but you need to think about it as a strategy in your exploration.
The same mechanic is in Dark Souls 3 also
Yep, DS3 also had the "kill enough enemies (or a major enemy) and you'll get one flask back". DS1 had a flask refill mechanic as well, if someone else kindles their bonfire in the area you're in, you have a decent chance of receiving a free estus flask (along with a gentle chiming noise and orange glow). But I like the sound of this implementation, sounds more "reliable" in terms of keeping yourself going. If you play flawlessly when you're low on resources, you can begin rebuilding them. Sounds nice!
@@JB-xl2jc i played ds3 and never noticed that at all lol this sounds like i can comfortably rely on it haha
@@NickHunter I think the thing with DS3 is that the flask refill, to me at least, was completely random. But in Elden Ring it seems to be a more guaranteed system.

As a person who deeeply respects Fromsoftware games but could never really "get good" (depsite playing thousands of hours of Monster Hunter), I can say you just sold me a copy of the game. I've never bought a fromsoftware game at release but I will this one, and stick with it so I can get to experience what everyone seems to love so much!
If you have friends to play with I believe co op is the best way to experience a souls game for the first time. The games can be brutal playing solo first but do what ya feel is right. You might just end up like all the rest of us and play through all the games.
this game seems very accessible. Just slap on a magic build, use summons and play with friends and ur all good !
That is surprising. I have a few hundred hours on MHW using Dual Blades and the similarities between that game and souls-like combat were glaringly obvious.
So far I have 100%'d DS1, DS2, Bloodborne, and Sekiro but not MHW! Not only did I never get good enough to dodge through roars, part of the reason I stopped playing was burnout from how fights were, especially in Iceborne. My dps just wasn't high enough and the Guiding Lands ended up feeling like the Grinding Lands very quickly.
I absolutely adore some of the monsters in MHW and I look forward to playing the next AAA iteration, but I don't know if I'll ever manage to handle that game's endgame.
Souls games on the other hand are nothing like that. Even the toughest bosses only take a few hours to beat … and then you're done! There's no, "Do I wanna farm Lunastra for 20-30min/run with the possibility of failing the hunt?" Or some bullshit flying dragon like Kushala Daora or Silver Rathalos.
I've played all the souls games using my favorite weapons: daggers or katanas, never shields, and I've had no problem.
I think MH's combat and bosses are amazing mechanically, but the latter have so much HP you can burn out before having gear with good enough dps to shorten hunts.
Good luck friend! And don't you dare go hollow.
go back and play them man you really dont have to be that good. The games are fairly easy if you just explore and grind for souls a little bit.
One of the main reasons I love FromSoftware games, is the exploration aspect. And seen this will be a hard presence on the games makes me LOVE the fact I will enjoy this game already, 100%. I'm so hyped.
Yup, same here. I do more exploration in your average From Software (sem--) linear title than I do in open world games ;p Because it's often much more rewarding (gear, lore, shortcuts).
Exploration and dopamine feeling took a loot from corpse/chest.
I just wished the games had a better story. I am just not engaged. The games have no narrative. A shame
But I still Hope for These really cool Moments and Things you have to Figure Out.
Like the Ashlake See or the painted world. Where you suspect nothing and Then Boom a entire new area.
Also I Hope for These sections Not Just to find Out enemies difficulties but also how to maneuver through an area. Like the Crystal Cave and its nearly invisible ways or the catacoombs with its pure Darkness or Things Like new Londos Water Level falling.
I think especially with the Dynamic day/night cycle and the Dynamic weather there would be big Potential to make really cool Things Happen.
Or Something light the Bloodmoon in Bloodborne where the world around you Changes.
Such Things Dynamic in the world would be neat.
Immediately reminds me of botw flawlessly designed exploration based world. The main hook of that world was being guided by intriguing landmarks to see what waited at the top of every hill, around every corner and at the bottom of every pit. The world just looks SO damn interesting and knowing what lurks in every new area are horrific fromsoft enemies and boss encounters makes this seem like one of the most exciting games of all time
That time stamp 🤣😂 didn’t think my hype for this could get any bigger great video man cheers
How nice! I just recently convinced myself to try From Software's games (currently Sekiro and original Demon's Souls) and I'm loving them. I will surely enjoy this after I'm done with Souls.

It would be a crime for you to not play BloodBorne. Best FS game ever made
@@PickleNick46 I play on PC. If it ever gets a port I'll surely try it
I wouldn't be too worried about the magic being OP. There's a good chance that it's a test version thing.
Predetermined classes in From's network tests are sometimes ridiculously OP.
However if it ends up being OP I don't mind that either because my first playthrough is always a melee build and it won't ruin anything for me.
If you remember the reviewers codes that they had for Dark Souls 3 the damage was doubled in the health damage taken was reduced by half because they were so worried about reviewers not being able to beat it
OP magic builds are the closest FromSoft comes to making an easy mode in their games.

6:30 - i miss when games let you explore open worlds organically instead of making it a series of map icons. I wish more games had the courage to actually hide things in them. It makes it so much more exciting when you stumble on a secret dungeon or item. Finding some of the crazy shit hidden in Morrowind was such a treat compared to the open world checklist of whatever game ubisoft just shat out onto the market.
Genshin does this actually. It's a game where you can just leisurely run in a random directly and go "wait, that's that over there", and before you know it you've unearthed ruins by solving puzzles that drain a lake of water where you then solve more puzzles to unlock the rest of the place and get loot. it's a game that's good at getting you sidetracked from whatever objective you previously had due to the shinies you encounter along the way.

The people complaining about how it looks, and that the Demon's Souls remake looks better, are just telling you that they've completed 0 Souls games without telling you they've completed 0 Souls games.
A game fully made a decade ago where a studio put all their time and passion into making it arguably the most visually stunning game release to this date looks better than a game built from the ground up with a brand new world and systems, where gameplay was the developer's focus? Shocking!
People who put graphics over gameplay are so weird
Don't get it either to be honest. I had countless more hours of fun playing those free flash games than most modern AAA games
You can still put gameplay over visuals and just remark on the fact that it does not quite hold up technically compared to the remake. That would never stop me from playing it, though.
@@baldinggrey5368 because the remake was exclusively next gen and a ps5 exclusive title. Elden ring has been in development since before even Sekiro- it was planned as a late ps4 release but got delayed into the next gen era. I've always thought that the best way to manage the "difficulty" of From Software games was to include magic and make it strong. It's not an automatic win button, but it helps mitigate some of the challenge for less skilled players. Due to the nature of From Software games (sekiro exluded) you can choose to ignore the easy option alltogether and play with your own playstyle. I don't know why more people don't share this opinion tbh. Hell, how often do people flex by playing the entirety of Dark Souls by using no armor and only the starting weapon? The people who want difficulty will make it for themselves. Let us plebs just enjoy the game too in our own way
Or they could just stop making games with the dark souls "formula" because its shitty
@@eftheusempire subjective opinion but okay. You realize other games exist, right? Why tf are you even here?
@@eftheusempire let me guess, died at the first boss and gave up?
@@patches_ no. I can get through most dark souls games without dying. I’m sick of this combat.

Solid video. Can’t wait for this journey
Such a good review for the time frame you had. Editing and script are so on point !
I don't always agree with the things you say on your videos but I can't deny how well made they are. Congratulations, you deserved playing Elden Ring early :P
Thanks. Really insightful and entertaining video and actually with no major spoiler. They were more like appetizers than spoilers. I've become more confident in buying this title.
That 10-12 second reload time at death is so you can go pick up your controller xD
Man, I'm watching this for like the ninth time. I'm so excited and yours was arguably the best coverage.
As someone who didn't like Sekiro as much as I thought I would, it's so nice to see this game is not about fast parrying and constantly in your face fights, but more on the tactical, RPG side of things. Can't wait to play this!
I've platinumed near all From Software games, been playing their games since the first Armored Core and I'm saddened to not of been accepted to their network test T.T I love the games they make and the world's they create.
Speaking of which, an Armored Core game is long overdue.
I’d love to see an Armor Core game with the same attention to detail that the Souls series has.
Bery hyped for this. Thos looks absolutely excellent.
lmao the crouch after getting into combat with the dragon :) thanks mate. Can't wait for this game.
The beaches are beyond gorgeous in this video, reminds me of the winning (I think it was the winning one it's been a year or two lol) submission in Vaati's imagine Elden ring art contest and demon horse boss fight a fan imagined.
Remember Ninja Gaiden's cutscenes 😢
Thankyou for explaining the learning curve/difficulty thing, I'm def interested in it, I'm just a bit nervous about owning another game that I can't finish, I'm good at my games but not godlike like the big elite players that can get through games on the hardest settings like a standard player plays on easy that's a scale I could never attain, but yep ok, I'm taking a gamble maybe I'll suprise myself and be great at it, cheers for you're impressions, you've convinced me 👍
This was a funny and informative video thank you very much for making it!
Excited, cheers for the video bub
Honestly the open world reminds me of Dragon's Dogma. Especially hearing you talk about how the Dragon reacts to you. Obviously not nearly as smart or vast, but they will see you from a certain distance and follow after you. I cannot wait for this game. Only dabbled with FromSoft games here and there but will be finishing DS3 finally soon. Want to try Sekiro but that might be just a bit too frustrating for me. Haha
REALLY into the magic here. Even the trailers/demos have some other awesome spell. Hope they don't nerf it too much on release. From what you seem to say, it sounds like something they'll change. But looking forward to doing a hybrid build.
Dark Souls is way more frustrating than Sekiro IMO, Sekiro feels way more refined and responsive.
Sekiro is easy once you learn to parry.
Remembering Ninja Gaiden 😭
badboje sekiro is a game that feels like you fucked up and that’s why you died every single time. With Sekiro i found myself wanting to smash my monitor more times than with dark souls but it was always me being stupid and messing up. the souls games def had some balancing issues. DS1 is probably the worst offender, but it’s a 2011 game so it’s not too big of a deal. i just hope that they make elden ring as challenging as Sekiro in its main dungeons but in its side content being as challenging as maybe DS3. it seems like in the network test area it is challenging but not monitor smashing hard
good to see someone mention dragons dogma, a hidden gem
Dragon’s Dogma is AWESOME! Play one and the dark arisen like hell and can’t wait to see number 2 come out! (Glad I was in my dragon phase back then 😂)
Watched this whole thing and somehow didn't feel like I had much spoiled. Thanks for holding back and just giving your impressions on various mechanics and sticking to stuff like your opinion on how successful they were at making an open world. That's what I wanted to see and hear. Started watching Vaati's video and closed it when it gave away stuff like that church being destructible and showing cutscenes. Was going a bit too in depth for me, those are the kind of discoveries I want to have myself. Your video didn't do much else other than assure me that this game is going to meet expectations and which is exactly all that I needed to hear.
Honestly skill up sounds like that one friend who really wants you to get in on the game, but also wanna watch you play trough it and see your genuine reactions
Omg you’re the only video I’ve seen explain the mechanics so clearly. The new flask system borrowing from sekiro makes me way less nervous to play this game. Im gonna suck but I’ll persevere
I have been binging your reviews through the summer and I have definitely become a fan. Very good channel and you are great at your job. I have never been as frustrated playing games than when I play FromSoft games. It's obviously a problem with me, because I know they can be enjoyed and loved. Maybe I'm missing something. But...I think this video has convinced me to pre-order Elden Ring.
Wow!! I had been hearing this title’s name for some time now and just figured it wasn’t for me. But seeing this gameplay… it looks spectacular. I will be getting this for XSX!! Great review as usual.
Don't forget about Ninna Gaiden!!
@@tobiramasenju6290
ninna?
The mounted combat really reminds of of Dynasty Warriors!
I was already excited for Elden Ring, this video has only added to that excitement!
... that's a bad thing. The mounted combat looks crap.
@@geoffrogers7590 In your opinion. I think it looks fine.
Lets hope it's DW 2 or 3 and not DW 9...
I got heavy Mount & Blade vibes.
Remember Ninja Gaiden 😭
10 Hours?!?! This man got access to a whole ass mini video game for review purposes.
Litteraly, when i saw how that dragon was hunting you, seen you and following you it was a mind blowing for me... just for that i would like to pre-order this game right know... Is amazing how just a little change, so little, can make a huge change. my god this games looks just so damn good
Thank you for the full breakdown, especially the discussion about magic and difficulty. I've avoided From games because I don't like bashing my head against a game's difficulty, but this looks like something I might enjoy.
Remembering Ninja Gaiden 😭
The games aren't too hard when you are actually playing and adapting, and that's not coming from an elitist, I've only beat ds1 and ds3 once each
@@retarddog6505 Ninja Gaiden
The load screens are actually an important aspect to me on my vanilla playthroughs of from software games. They show u items u may not have found
Great in depth video
Loved the vid, can't wait for more elden ring.
Have been using my steelseries Siberia since the start of 2017 and still going strong, love the changeable batteries and quality audio, am not looking forward to the day it dies but have a pretty strong feeling what will be replacing it.
Small spoilers below
Watching all these videos I love the difference between Skill Up and Maximillian_DOOD’s experience finding the dragon. Skill Up just runs across it and Max gets invaded by an NPC and another NPC comes in to help him and tells him there’s a strong creature nearby, which turned out to be the dragon. I love this, and can’t wait for Elden Ring.
"Elden Ring is exactly what I hoped it would be" - Shillup This made me so happy I am literally crying
Shillup 😂😂😂
Was there much doubt from any From Soft fans though?
@@gamerinatrance3618 The problem with FromSoft is that the expectation of all of their games is so incredibly high. its hard to believe any of game could live up to them. They consistently do but that's neither here nor there.
Just like his review of Cyberpunk 2077 - that means it has to be true ^^
@@brad7177 its the one studio i will always give the benefit of the doubt to. even when they miss (pre demons souls) its always really interesting.
I LOVE IT, im so happy i cant express it enough!, I love your voice BTW, and the one from the guy at Fextralife, and this game I Imagined it first time i finish Demon Souls, so Its a lot for me that my thoughts reach miyazacky almost intact :)
I cannot wait 🙌 this looks amazing
I am so jealous i wish i had a closed beta code but i am glad to see more elden ring footage. Looking forward to elden ring, even if the new horizon sequel is releasing alongside it.
Yeah I was bummed out too, but I’m definitely enjoying this gameplay and the fact that the embargo is lifted at least we can see what to expect! Glass half full :)
Hzd is a boring game , i dont get it why people liked it, good graphics and combat tho
I feel so stupid for thinking you were talking about an animal crossing sequel when you said “new horizon sequel”
its envy, not jealousy

That moment you refresh CZcams exactly as a SkillUp video drops..and it's about Elden Ring!
yeah massive pant explosion
that dugneon at 7:16 in the vid is actually like one of 2 in the CNT that had another mechanic linked to it on the open world - there is a little statue way out in the wild that if activated indicated a pathway to that place, indicating for ppl there is something down that way, in similar way to how some graces indicate the main story path.
I love your enthusiasm 🤠💜
Hearing you passionately speak for nearly 6 minutes about how this is the most accessible Souls-like and From Software game ever nearly brought a tear to my eye. :)

Sick, can’t wait. Sure hope I can get my paws on a next gen console by then.
I like the exploration piece. I like open world games where you have to explore to discover new things. Its much more exciting and rewarding
Not been this excited for a game since sekiro and I know I won’t be let down

This game turned out to be everything and more as described so excellently by SkillUp. Fantastic!
@skill up. You really set the bar for game reviews. Great job
This is the first time I've seen difficulty and the "play your way" concept combined in such an organic, un-gimmicky way.
I think this game will prove not only From Software's skill at creating stunning and well-polished worlds, but also their absolute genius in abstract game design.
Never forget: Ninja Gaiden
The Souls series has that "Organic Difficulty" philosophy to a T and I am so pumped for this entry!!!
Please do a video where you cover the combat mechanics, like you mentioned you didn't have time for. Great video again. Looking fwd to your next.
I couldn’t hold it any longer and watched the video twice. Great preview! and I don’t think you spoiled any part of the game.
8:50 Dark Souls 3 actually had a similar mechanic, where defeating certain enemies gave you an Estus Flask back. Same with killing an Invader.
Ofc it did. There's not really a like, big mechanic in Elden Ring that hasn't been carried over from previous games (I don't mean it in a bad way...I mean it as in From knows what they're doing) I think with Elden Ring, From mainly wanted to go over the open-world formula along with what they're already perfect at.
I can already hear people/Journalists whining and screeching that finding stuff is to hard and they are not lead to stuff by a trail of other goodies like a toddler lead to the bat or car by a trail of candy. XD
But I love the outlook of this, no handholding, actual freedom of choice to fight or not, just going on discovering, no in game marker who forces you to go there because there is something or it just flashes annoyingly all the time, you have the choice to look up stuff on the internet, but are not forced by the game to know there is something but you just don't want to go there.
The combat system looks grate, is there only one magic system or are there multiple like in Dark Souls? Pyro, Sorcery and Miracles, maybe different names in Elden Ring?
thanks for the Video!!!
lmfao it's a video game guy. Save the elitism.
Outstanding summary of the game! Looking forward to playing it.
