    These blagdon affinity ponds are brilliant for keeping fancy goldfish.
    I live on a narrowboat and have a 130 litre half moon one on the front deck. Due to lack of permanent 240v electricity I’m unable to run the brilliant blagdon filter, so I use a 12v air pump powering a large sponge and box filter.
    In addition I have a solar powered air pump to air stone and a solar powered submersible pump running the waterfall. The substrate is gravel and lava rock.
    Maintenance through the summer is once a week gravel vac and 50% water change, less so in the winter. The water stays crystal clear.
    The fish in this setup, for the last three years are two adult ranchu which are thriving. ( they spawned this year )
    They over winter in the pond and I stop feeding when the water temperature drops below 10C.
    Thanks for this video, I hope you have many years of enjoyment from this pond.

      I found your email address on your website and sent some pics.
      I’m sure some fish keepers would frown at the living conditions of fish on a narrowboat but believe me they are thriving.

    Having five aquariums myself, you need pond plants, not talking about water lilies or any of that stuff. I’m talking about in the plants for the goldfish to munch on like Hornwort (Ceratophyllum dermersum;
    Hornwort (Ceratophyllum dermersum);
    Water Starwort (Callitriche) native;
    Hornwort (Ceratophyllum dermersum) Native
    Willow Moss (Fontinalis Antipyretica) Native
    Common Water Crowfoot (Ranunculus aquatilis)?

    We have the Grand Octagon which we bought in 2019. It’s been drained and moved once but otherwise the 5in 1 has kept everything clean and healthy, but had to replace it this year with a new one. We have to have a net over it but it looks good.

    • @Mountain_Aquatics
      @Mountain_Aquatics  Před 10 měsíci +1

      I like the grand octagon the best, but this one fitted best in this space.
      I have found the same, the 5 in one is keeping the water crystal clear. How often have you had to clean yours?

    • @kateeveritt3292
      @kateeveritt3292 Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@Mountain_Aquatics I probably clean the filters maybe every 10-12 weeks when I see the flow has reduced. With the new one the cables aren’t threaded through the frame which makes the process much easier.

    • @kateeveritt3292
      @kateeveritt3292 Před 10 měsíci +2

      Because it’s a raised pond the water heats up and cools down more quickly. We use a floating pond heater in the coldest months which the fish really enjoy. We haven’t lost any.

      I did wonder if the pond was at your place, it wasnt made obvious in the video. It is important to make a point of these things though otherwise people will think its ok to put fancies out in a pond all year. you also didnt mention anything about using pre cycled media, which Im assuming you did based on only "cycling" it for a week.

    • @Mountain_Aquatics
      @Mountain_Aquatics  Před rokem +2

      Yes we add some filter media from in the fish room that is already established and kick start the beneficial bacteria. I’d normally just put a couple of fish in at a time to give the bacteria a chance to catch up. Doesn’t make for as exciting viewing though. This video was filmed last week and other than a little peak in nitrates which soon levelled out the water has been fine
