Love these, they turned out so cute!! I have done jeans/shorts like this this several times. I started out doing them for my daughter, since her shorts are smaller it was less overwhelming to learn that way. I find that pulling the blue threads out with the tweezers is soooo relaxing.

Omg the tye dye stretch pants you have on, I have the same exact ones in 3x, got them from a family dollar in NY while on vacation, they're soooo comfy!! Love you girl!!
That razor knife is meant to be able to take off the top of the blade and you can use the next piece down. You take the other end off and open the knife enough to go just passed the first line (you will see the lines on the blade). Put the part from the top over it and bend. It will remove that top part of the razor- leaving a new top blade. And you can continue to do that for the entire length!
I do this all the time with old jeans or if I want to distress my jeans and I always get so many compliments!
