  • Hi guys,
I think I have found my new favourite Japanese band! They're incredibly talented and I can't wait to see more from them!
Thank you to those who suggested them to me and stay tuned for more reactions of them :)
As always I hope you enjoyed my reaction, (as well as the mini breakdown I had at the end when deciding on schedules haha) and don't forget to check Band-Maid's performance out for yourself! I promise you won't regret it!

Judging from your reaction, looks like you might be a Maidiac in the making 😁. Which is a good thing. I think you will enjoy "Play" live from the same concert. For a MV, I highly suggest you watch "Blooming". For more guitar greatness, there's their instrumentals like "Onset" and "From Now On". They have over 100+ in their discography to choose from. You can't really go wrong in choosing any. Looking forward for more B-M reactions 👍

They are so good - extremely talented musicians and entertainers - they remind me of the best of early 80s rock bands - like Journey, Reo Speedwagon, Ozzy, Van Halen, etc. They are all real musicians and were fantastic to see live. Band Maid is very similar in that regard.

As much as I enjoy seeing videos of so many of them, it is the music of Band-Maid that has really grabbed me. They have rekindled my love of the rock of my youth which I thought had pretty much gone the way of the Dodo. I have purchased all of their albums and they easily dominate my playlists now. Welcome to the great world of BAND-MAID... I found Band-Maid back in 2014 and fell in love with them instantly. I am a musician of 56 plus years and was disappointed in uncreative music and bands,Until, I found Band-Maid. BAND-MAID writes all of their own music, which is very incredible music. Kanami Tono writes and composes all their music. Miku Kobato the rhythm guitar player and founder of the band writes 90% of the lyrics. If you love April Fools Day you have to check out the band (Band-Maiko) their prank on their fans. I very happy with your reaction and comments. Two songs you might want to check out would be "About Us" and "Memorable" both songs were written for their fans (Maidiacs). Sorry for the rambling, but I try to support Band-Maid any way I can. Again great reaction. 🙏🌹👍👍

    @Parker-- Před rokem +10

Welcome to the best band this century. This is a great starter to get why their live energy is so amazing, but as a song I would say it's their 25-30th best song. That's how good they are. And far from all their music sounds just like this; they make all sorts of rock, punk, metal and pop songs, but they're all catchy. Play Live is similar to this song and another great example of their live performances. After that you've got a smorgasbord of options and different rock genres they write in. Choose Me, Blooming, DICE, Don't You Tell Me, Warning, Manners, Rinne, and Puzzle are all absolute bangers and none of them sound much alike at all. The thing that ties them together is the craftsmanship and how catchy they are. Stick with this band and they will become one of your _all-time_ favorites.😊
And yeah, a lot of metal specifically is screaming. Not my cup of tea either. I like strained vocals but once it gets to be screaming it's too much for me too.

  • @hiawatha.g
    @hiawatha.g Před rokem +6

Oh my gosh, you have opened the floodgates. Why do you love this? Because they may be the best rock group in the world today (I think they are). They are certainly the most creative band since the Beatles. (Yes, I stand by that statement!)
You are going to get a lot of suggestions. First, a little background on the band:
Saiki Atsumi - Lead vocals Born Feb 8, 1994 29 years old
MISA - Bass Born Oct 15, 1992 30 years old
Kanami Tono - Lead guitar, Main composer and arranger Born Sept 28, 1991 31 years old
Miku Kobato - Rhythm guitar, backing vocal Born Oct 21, 1991 31 years old
Akane Hirose - Drums Born Dec 14, 1990 32 years old
Miku was working in a Maid Café after being in an idol group that didn’t break through. She envisoned the idea of a maid-band that plays hard rock and metal. She recruited Kanami, after finding a Kanami guitar cover on line; Kanami then recruited Akane, who recruited MISA. Akane and MISA had been students together at the Tokyo Music Academy. The group decided they needed more vocal “oomph”, and collectively recruited Saiki. Miku didn't know how to play guitar when they started, so Kanami has been teaching her. She's become good so fast that she is really adding to the music mix, and Maidiacs are daring to dream of a dual shred.
The band was struggling early on, and in 2014, even as the label was considering dropping them, they posted a music video, “Thrill” which went viral globally. When they realized what was going on, it gave them the momentum to forge ahead, and they have now done multiple tours of Europe and the U.S. and are building a global fanbase who call themselves the Maidiacs.
They have released seven full albums, as well as several EPs, singles and music videos. They have put out around 160 songs, covering a wide variety of styles and sounds, without any duds. They combine a punk vibe with instrumental virtuosity (two things that are often seen as being incompatible), and have done some amazing progressive-rock songs with a metal edge to them.
They toured the U.S. in 2022 and sold out 14 cities in less than 48 hours. Their fan base skews heavily to actual practicing musicians. Some of those followed the band to multiple dates and documented everything on youtube-some of the footage is hilarious. I’ve seen them twice (2019 and 2022) and their shows are truly life-reaffirming. They are touring the U.S. twice more in 2023; So far no announcements of another European tour but it seems likely in 2024.
Band-Maid are that rare band that sound perfect live, even better than in the studio. Here are more links:

Welcome aboard, J-G. You are embarking on (along with many others - over 174 million YT views plus over 40 million reactor plays!) an awesome, progressive, hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Prog, Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Jazz, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Joy of Playing, Consistency (125 songs), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destined for mega-stardom.
Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off-the-rails spectacular!
Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 70 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: czcams.com/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/video.html Their songs from albums Unleash, Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, Just Bring It, Brand New Maid, and New Beginning drive even more - Warning, No God, Different, Black Hole, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Don’t You Tell Me, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on.
But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, About Us, Memorable, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, At The Drop Of A Hat, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like After Life, Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or a bit jazzy like Wonderland… or progressive like No God, Giovanni, and Black Hole… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series… or instrumentals like From Now On, Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts… or their many acoustic versions like Catharsis and Sayonakidori... and last but not least, their Anime hits like Sense, Glory and Unleash (from their own Anime MV (series?)): czcams.com/video/7LB_EPS48HE/video.html)
And many songs are represented with 50 well produced music videos. czcams.com/users/BANDMAID
Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE audience & online OKYU-JI concerts:

Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid.
For fun, check out an awesome, little known "Mega Band-Maid Mix" by DJ Ray of some of their earlier stuff: facebook.com/djrayboston/videos/1004709499579009
    Band-Maid Members:
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 29 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen!
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 31 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kuruppo! No, no, no… KURUPPO!!
Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 31 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 32 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 30 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note... uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!
Maidiacs (Maid-e-acts) - Band-Maid’s crazed yet supportive, knowledgeable and loyal Super Fans.
    [BAND-MAID NEWS]

@@xagorvangard Thankee Sir. Here it is.
Band Maid was started in 2013 by Miku Kobato. At the time she had just left the Idol Group, Lil Cumin and she didn't like the type of music she had been performing. She approached her management agency with the idea of making an actual band playing rock music but dressed as maids. She had worked in a Maid Cafe and thought the image of maids playing rockin music would create what she called "The Gap" between what you see and what you hear. The Management company was like Ok, go ahead.
Miku then looked around and found Kanami a singer/songwriter who was posting her own videos on the internet. Miku had her agency contact her and Kanami thought the idea was cool and agreed to join. Miku then asked if Kanami knew a drummer who might be interested. Kanami had worked with Akane in the past and there is 2 versions of this, the first is, Kanami literally walked over to Akane's apartment and asked her, the second is Kanami called Akane and asked her. (Akane has said in 2 different interviews that 1: Kanami called her and asked if she could come over and 2: in a second interview Kanami just came over) Akane was actually hesitant as she had worked in an "All Girl Group" before and didn't enjoy it as it wasn't the type of music she wanted to play. After hearing a Demo, Akane was like ok, but was still slightly hesitant because of the "Maid Outfits", but she agreed to give it a try. Akane was asked if she knew a bass player and she had gone to Tokyo School of Music with MISA and had worked a couple of jobs with her. So Misa was contacted and after she heard a demo she was like I like the music, but she also was hesitant about the "Maid Outfits", but she relented and joined in as she really wanted to play the kind of music she heard in the demo. The 3 of them then "Auditioned" for the record company and passed the audition.
Now we have the "Core" members. The 4 members worked out some songs provided for them by the record company, and a setlist and they had performed 3 times with just Miku on main vocals. Miku after those performances felt that her voice wasn't powerful enough to really perform the songs she wanted. So she approached her management company again and asked if they had any singers who weren't in other projects. They then auditioned several singers. Miku heard Saiki rehearsing in a room across the hall and asked if she could be auditioned, the record company then had Saiki audition.
Saiki was signed to the same management company and had done some work as a backup singer and dancer and was asked if she would be interested in auditioning for this new group which currently had 4 members and she would be the fifth. She had been a member of a group with 8 other people as a backup singer and dancer, and HATED it. So she listened to the demo and thought "Cool" because she liked the music.
Now we come to the tricky part. Miku KNEW that if Saiki was told about the "Maid Outfits" she would say NO WAY!, so they didn't tell her. They told her they would have "Cool/cute Clothes"(I've read it translated either way), and she never met Miku until a few days before they had a contracted performance. She wasn't told about the "Maid Outfits" until the day before the performance, and she had considered backing out, but she had signed the contract. (Saiki also had NEVER met Miku until then as well)
So the Ladies, went and did the performance and Saiki really, REALLY liked the crowds reaction and the music they were performing. She DIDN'T like the apron she wore so it got ditched after the first performance.
And you now have the beginnings of the BEST LIVE HARD ROCK BAND in the WORLD!
      ALL HAIL BAND MAID!!!!!
Now that we have the Full band, it was felt that there needed to be a second guitar. Saiki was like, "Not Me, No Way." So Miku said, "I'll do it.", at first that was literally all she did, was hold the guitar and mime playing it, until Akane said, if you are going to hold it, you NEED to learn to play it. And Miku said, "Ok.", and Kanami started to teach Miku how to play. The Ladies released their first album in 2014 "Maid in Japan" which failed to chart, but later after "Thrill" it was reissued and charted to #26 in Japan.

Then in 2015 they released "New Beginning"
On New Beginning was the song that changed Band Maid's entire existence. "Thrill"...
The band was getting ready to release their first music video and the choice was between "Love, Passion, Matador" and "Thrill" and the ladies chose Thrill. (Little known fact, Miku helped with the lyrics on Thrill but did not get credited)
This became the seminal moment of Band Maid. Because their second album charted at #64, the record company was seriously considering disbanding the Ladies and switching them to other projects. (In fact they had Kanami and Akane work with Mochi to Cheese thinking that when Band Maid cratered they could use them in another band. MISA had also just started working with Mochi to Cheese as well). However about 6 months after the video's release, a Facebook page "JRock Radio" posted the video to their timeline. And the video went viral. Having over a million views in just a few short weeks. The Ladies Twitter page got so many hits they thought their page had been hacked. Their CZcams channel also started getting more and more subscribers and views to Thrill.
Now the ladies knew where their fans wanted them to go. Harder Rock, less pop. And history was Maid.

Yeah, I understand your angst. So much great music in the world and so little time to hear it. Band-Maid is in their tenth year and still with their original five members. Saiki Atsumi is the singer for Band-Maid. She's not a screamer and the band doesn't do that style of music. She has a very direct delivery which is great for rock. They all wore the same maid outfit when the band first started, but as time has gone on they've made alterations. The drummer wears shorts and slippers because of the demands of playing drums, the bassist wears black and goes barefoot on stage because she's MISA. They change every year or so, usually after a major album release. I'm really looking forward to more videos; they are such an excellent band! I'll recommend the recent music videos for "Unleash!!!!!" (anime style), "from now on", and "Influencer", and live videos for "Freedom" and "Play" from this concert or "Puzzle" and "No God" from their January 2023 show from the Tokyo Garden Theater. But anything you choose will amaze you and whatever you've just listened to will become your favorite.

They have total control of their music. Kanami, lead guitar, is the primary composer with MISA, bass, and Akane, drums, create their lines from the basic music from Kanami. Miku, 2nd guitar, backing vocals, spokes pigeon is the primary Lyricist with Saiki, main vocals working with Miku.
The maid costumes are to create the "Gap" meaning the difference in what you are seeing Demure Maids vs what you are hearing Hard Rock. They now refer to their costumes as their Battle Armor!! Miku designs the costumes!!
If you want to see where maid concept came from, just do a YT search by inputing Maid Cafe!!
Next - "Puzzle" older song but updated.

So, Band-Maid is perfect for me. I hope you check out more of that group's music. As a subscriber to this channel prior to this wonderful reaction, I know a little bit about your musical tastes and I believe great follow ups would be songs called "Daydreaming or Start Over" both are official MV's and can be found on Band-Maid's CZcams channel.
Their live performances tend to bring out the best in them and I know you also tend to gravitate toward live takes, but in this one instance these 2 MV's might be the better way to go before heading back to live performances.

I became a Band-Maid fan after listening to Domination and Freedom. The sound produced by this band has a uniqueness different from conventional rock music. I feel that it has become a charm that attracts people who say "I don't like rock music". I feel that Band-Maid's songs are influenced by the unique sound that has been popular in Japanese pop music for over 50 years. Maybe that's why people in the West feel fresh about Band-Maid's individuality, which is different from Western rock.
And let me imagine your taste in music... I highly recommend LOVEBITES as another band.
It has a lot in common with Band-Maid. (Japanese female band, unique fashion, transcendent performance technique, very impressive vocals... etc.) Band-Maid and LOVEBITES share a lot of fandom. I think the probability that people who like Band-Maid will also like LOVEBITES is high. (I recommend Holy War or Judgment Day as an introductory song)

I only encountered Band-Maid about a year ago and they have become my favorite band. They have a huge catalog and their songwriting is amazingly and consistently of high quality. Most of their songs are hard rock but they occasionally go off label and perform softer songs. They have been playing as a band for the last ten years and their live performances are as tight as anyone. Their live shows are an experience.
They do instrumentals: "From Now On", "Onset".
Watch their last two live videos from their 2022 Tokyo Garden Theater concert: "Puzzle" and "No God"
"Daydreaming" has excellent vocal performances and one of the most incendiary, heart-rending guitar solos I've ever heard.

Hmmm..... I wonder where the usual suspects are. They'd normally swarm over the comments way before me.... Only see Shikataganai.... bah, they'll all make their grand appearance soon enough.
Fine, I'll beat them to the intro, so here goes: -
Lead Singer = Saiki Atsumi (pronounced similar to "Psyche").
She's wearing a black, Dominatrix Maid outfit, with a Blue Rose at her head. Nicknamed the "Ice Queen". (Looks like she thawed out quite a bit of late).
    Lead Guitarist = Kanami Tono.
Kanami wears a standard maid outfit with a bonnet. Nicknamed "Mincho". Some of us also call her "Obiwan Kanami".
Secondary Vocalist/ Rhythm Guitarist = Miku Kobato.
Nicknamed "Little Pigeon", Miku is actually the founder of the band and is their main Spokespigeon. (That statement would make more sense as you learn more about this group 😛). Anyway, she's wearing a standard maid costume with a red rose in her hair, signifying that she's also the vocalist.
    Bassist = MISA.
I wish I knew her full name, but just remember to spell her name completely in capital letters. Nicknamed the "Barefoot Assassin", she's the one wearing the black Chinese Maid costume, and looking so absolutely cool in it.
Drummer = Akane Hirose (pronounced as "Ah-Kah-Neh").
Primarily nicknamed "The Gorilla", she wear the standard maid costume, though I suspect she's wearing shorts so that it doesn't get in the way of her drumming.
Hope that helps. Welcome to Band-Maid. We look forward to hearing more from you, Jordi Grace.

Saiki is a top class singer. She packs a lot of syllables into each song (packing the Japanese language into the English/rock framework). Her breathing technique is very good to keep up. Look up the translations of the songs online as well and you'll see what she is putting out. Their acoustic songs shine an ever better light on her voice.

If you like the instrumental part, they play 100% instrumental numbers live to give singer Saiki a break. Some of them are available on their YT channel. Try the most recent one From Now On.

The part where the members gather around the drummer is a game they play in every concert, hengao or silly faces. Basically one or more of the band members will make faces at Akane, seeing if they can get her to slip up or miss a beat. Not only does she not miss any beats, she often dishes right back.

Yep, as you've undoubtably by now surmised, you're gonna need to add a day...just for Band-Maid 😄 Any song suggested for you're next reaction is the correct song to check out. They're THAT good (it's seriously crazy, but true). A couple of personal favs of mine are "Blooming" - mv, "Puzzle" - live, and "Daydreaming" - mv. Have a BLAST and welcome to The Maids! 🕊

I'm certain you will be flooded by Maidiacs suggesting Band-Maid songs for you to view, so let me suggest the all female Japanese Pop-rock/Pop-punk band SCANDAL instead! Here is a live performance of their song Burn czcams.com/video/PjVPqQcsvoc/video.html

Good call. SCANDAL has a long track record of excellence and should be much more well known than they are, at least overseas. I love them as much as I do Band-Maid, for different reasons since they have different strengths. Their "10th Anniversary", "Wonderful Tonight" or "Invitation" live blu-rays are must-see concerts if you get the chance.

Don't know what else you have done but BAND-MAID have a lot of songs Dice and BLOOMING are popular. Have you done NEMOPHILA yet? They have great songs but they are heavier and they do covers as well that are nearly as popular as their own songs. A really good Korean band is DIH. They are new and don't have a lot of songs but definitely worth looking at as is Hades who are another Korean band. The new BABYMETAL album is really cultish try Metal Kingdom .
