For the last ten years, Band-Maid has been Japan's hidden gem of Hard Rock. Don't let the Maid Costumes fool you, This Is A Serious Band that deserves your attention and your admiration. This band has a deep skill stack of musicianship and song writing skills comparable to any band I've heard in the last sixty years. Lead Guitar Kanami Tono is simply a compositional genius as well as a phenomenal guitarist. Rhythm guitar Miku Kobato's talent for lyrics is off the charts: look up the translations and read along with the songs. Her band mates describe her lyrics as intellectual, philosophical, a bit on the dark side, yet also uplifting. You'll fall in love with everyone in this band: they're all soooo goooood at everything they do. On Drums Akane Hirose has earned Jimmy Page's admiration. Misa is lauded for every aspect of her bass playing. Saiki Atsumi can belt out the rockers, but stun you when Band-Maid goes off-script and changes up with a ballad or love song.

Thx for the reaction. "Her" is Kanami Tono, one of her generation's finest guitarists and songwriters. If you like One OK Rock, you'll probably like this band also (this one on average has a little heavier sound, and ofc a female lead). This band has a remarkably large, diverse, inventive catalog of incredible songs. You'll probably have to dig hard to find one that isn't at least good, most all being great to masterpieces imo. Hope you listen to more of them; they have too many great songs to feel good about recommending just a couple, so I guess I'll just point you to their recent stuff in Unleash, and Influencer (both wonderful songs posted on their YT channel (off the same EP as "from now on")).
The person on the rythmn guitar (not the lead) is their 2nd vocalist, band founder, and lyric writer Miku :) The main singer Saiki isnt in the video since its an instrumental.
The fantastic lead guitarist doing all the fancy stuff is Kanami :) Who also is an amazing composer and writes almost all their songs (with some input from the drummer and bassist) since about their 3rd album like 6-7yr ago or whatever it was. P.s The beautiful bassist is Misa - one of the best bass players in the world :) And their amazing drummer is Akane!
Fun to watch you getting so excited about Kanami Tono. As fantastic as a guitarist she is, she's an even better songwriter. Wide range of styles, intricate but catchy compositions, bridges that deserve to be songs in their own right, and produces an album's worth of material most years. For me she's one of the greats.

BAND-MAID is a five-member girls rock band. They are celebrating their 10th anniversary this year. The members have not changed. They are a hard rock band and fans consider them one of the best hard rock bands in the world. They usually have 20 songs and 2 hour gig. Formed in Japan in 2013, led by side guitarist Miku Kobato. Kobato has experience working at a maid cafe in Akihabara, Tokyo, and came up with the idea of playing cool music in her maid outfit. That's why the band was named BAND-MAID. "Thrill" was the first music video of 2014, reaching 2 million views in 2 weeks, and they escaped disbandment and decided to become a hard rock band. Also, they perform LIVE overseas and increase the number of fans. Now they write, compose and arrange all their songs. 130 original songs. And 46 songs have been released on the official CZcams, all of which are killer songs.
■ They will be the opening act for Japanese rock band The Last Rock Stars American performances on February 3rd, 4th, and 10th.
■ They have just finished their13 gig tour in the US.
■ 10th Anniversary Concert at Tokyo Garden Theater on January 9th of this year.
They just finished 2.5 hours of 26 songs and Long Alive tickets are now on sale.

On Kanami's guitar, it has an unusual paint job called "Angry Larry" It normally looks red with slight metallic sheen, but depending on the light and the angle you look at it, it can look green, red, purple or even gray. And it glows really weird under UV light.
The other guitarist with the red twin tails is Miku, the band founder, rhythm guitarist, Main Lyricist and secondary lead vocalist. MISA is the bass player and Akane is the drummer. Saiki the primary lead singer is not in this video, but she is in most of the others.

Band Maid was started in 2013 by Miku Kobato. At the time she had just left the Idol Group, Lil Cumin and she didn't like the type of music she had been performing. She approached her management agency with the idea of making an actual band playing rock music but dressed as maids. She had worked in a Maid Cafe and thought the image of maids playing rockin music would create what she called "The Gap" between what you see and what you hear. The Management company was like Ok, go ahead.
Miku then looked around and found Kanami a singer/songwriter who was posting her own videos on the internet. Miku had her agency contact her and Kanami thought the idea was cool and agreed to join. Miku then asked if Kanami knew a drummer who might be interested. Kanami had worked with Akane in the past and there is 2 versions of this, the first is, Kanami literally walked over to Akane's apartment and asked her, the second is Kanami called Akane and asked her. (Akane has said in 2 different interviews that 1: Kanami called her and asked if she could come over and 2: in a second interview Kanami just came over) Akane was actually hesitant as she had worked in an "All Girl Group" before and didn't enjoy it as it wasn't the type of music she wanted to play. After hearing a Demo, Akane was like ok, but was still slightly hesitant because of the "Maid Outfits", but she agreed to give it a try. Akane was asked if she knew a bass player and she had gone to Tokyo School of Music with MISA and had worked a couple of jobs with her. So Misa was contacted and after she heard a demo she was like I like the music, but she also was hesitant about the "Maid Outfits", but she relented and joined in as she really wanted to play the kind of music she heard in the demo. The 3 of them then "Auditioned" for the record company and passed the audition.
Now we have the "Core" members. The 4 members worked out some songs provided for them by the record company, and a setlist and they had performed 3 times with just Miku on main vocals. Miku after those performances felt that her voice wasn't powerful enough to really perform the songs she wanted. So she approached her management company again and asked if they had any singers who weren't in other projects. They then auditioned several singers. Miku heard Saiki rehearsing in a room across the hall and asked if she could be auditioned, the record company then had Saiki audition.
Saiki was signed to the same management company and had done some work as a backup singer and dancer and was asked if she would be interested in auditioning for this new group which currently had 4 members and she would be the fifth. She had been a member of a group with 8 other people as a backup singer and dancer, and HATED it. So she listened to the demo and thought "Cool" because she liked the music.
Now we come to the tricky part. Miku KNEW that if Saiki was told about the "Maid Outfits" she would say NO WAY!, so they didn't tell her. They told her they would have "Cool/cute Clothes"(I've read it translated either way), and she never met Miku until a few days before they had a contracted performance. She wasn't told about the "Maid Outfits" until the day before the performance, and she had considered backing out, but she had signed the contract. (Saiki also had NEVER met Miku until then as well)
So the Ladies, went and did the performance and Saiki really, REALLY liked the crowds reaction and the music they were performing. She DIDN'T like the apron she wore so it got ditched after the first performance.
And you now have the beginnings of the BEST LIVE HARD ROCK BAND in the WORLD!

Now that we have the Full band, it was felt that there needed to be a second guitar. Saiki was like, "Not Me, No Way." So Miku said, "I'll do it.", at first that was literally all she did, was hold the guitar and mime playing it, until Akane said, if you are going to hold it, you NEED to learn to play it. And Miku said, "Ok.", and Kanami started to teach Miku how to play. The Ladies released their first album in 2014 "Maid in Japan" which failed to chart, but later after "Thrill" it was reissued and charted to #26 in Japan.
Then in 2015 they released "New Beginning"
On New Beginning was the song that changed Band Maid's entire existence. "Thrill"...
The band was getting ready to release their first music video and the choice was between "Love, Passion, Matador" and "Thrill" and the ladies chose Thrill. (Little known fact, Miku helped with the lyrics on Thrill but did not get credited)
This became the seminal moment of Band Maid. Because their second album charted at #64, the record company was seriously considering disbanding the Ladies and switching them to other projects. (In fact they had Kanami and Akane work with Mochi to Cheese thinking that when Band Maid cratered they could use them in another band. MISA had also just started working with Mochi to Cheese as well). However about 6 months after the video's release, a Facebook page "JRock Radio" posted the video to their timeline. And the video went viral. Having over a million views in just a few short weeks. The Ladies Twitter page got so many hits they thought their page had been hacked. Their CZcams channel also started getting more and more subscribers and views to Thrill.
Now the ladies knew where their fans wanted them to go. Harder Rock, less pop. And history was Maid.
And for all your Band-Maid facts, please don't hesitate to ask. If I don't know the answer, odds are very good that another Maidiac will.

As many have said..the lady you are enamored with..is "Kanami Tono"..known as Mincho...She is the bands main composer...and also creates the backing tracks as she is also a fine pianist..So the piano you hear..is also her....Being as good as she is..she also taught the other lady in this MV...The one with the red flower and twin tails ..Miku Kobato..the bands founder and main lyricist..how to play guitar as she didn't play a note when she started the band...The Bass player (all in black)..is MISA...And drummer is Akane Hirose.
So kanami or mincho is a fabulous guitarist. But holy shit, she is the einstein of writing music!

Kanami is also an classical trained pianist and plays piano since she was 4 ( i guess it was four ) and also composed classical songs. The music st the beginning and whenever you hear classic music in their songs is for sure also composed from her.
Not to say that Akane on drums and Misa on bass are also multi instrumentalists, they play horn, trumbone and also piano, Both did study music.
The hamonies of Saiki and Miku on vocals are one of the most well known and important characteristics of this band. And also the bass solos which I never heard in any band in such a quantity ( and quality ).

I've been listening to Band Maid since 2015. In the early days, comments that I heard from multiple reactors: (a) "C'mon, it isn't really those girls playing their instruments?"; (b) "Women have no stamina -- they'll never be able to keep that up"; (c) "That guitarist will never be able to replicate that solo live". Since I haven't heard these kinds of comments in awhile, I'll assume that those who uttered them have been "sent away" (permanently). Not only is Kanami a killer guitarist; she taught Miku (the one with the magenta highlights in her hair) to place guitar from "scratch" -- Miku now not only shares vocal duties with lead vocalist Saiki (who is celebrating her birthday today), but plays a very respectable rhythm guitar. Oh, the gorgeous and wildly-gifted bassist (dressed in black) is Misa (just "Misa"), while the equally-talented drummer is Akane. They're in their tenth year as a recording act, critics, and they are constantly getting better (their "bar" was pretty high to begin with). They have virtually total control of almost every aspect of their music. They normally play 18-28 songs a show (depending on the circumstances). They seem to have held-up after all. Perhaps, if you ask very nicely -- and pay them a small fortune -- they can come over to your place and teach you how to play YOUR instruments (composing and arranging songs, as well as post-production techniques, will be extra).

For those who have not heard, Band-Maid has added another May music festival. They will be performing at Pointfest 2023, a one day festival (May 27) in the St. Louis metro. The headliners are Incubus along with Coheed and Cambria. Only 9 bands performing, including Band-Maid.

Any Maids track always ROCKS!!! The ladies are in their early 30s now and have been rocking for almost 10 years with plenty of Solo work from Misa, Kanami and Akane. The great thing is they always look so happy.
Try Thrill the track that blew them up on the world stage, after a slow start it suddenly went viral outside of Japan (the label was about let them go when this happened in 2015), Freedom, Onset, From now on, Without Holding Back, Hate? Are all great tracks and they have an extensive back catalogue.

KANAMI Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want is more!
AKANE Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa), "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA!

Love to see you fangirling Kanami! I’m a Kanami fanboy myself. One of my favorite guitarists of all time… right there with players like Tony Iommi, Frank Marino, and Ritchie Blackmore. And what really makes her special is her compositional ability. I love them all, though. What a perfect band where the sum of the parts is better than all the individuals.

OK. Many people see this sons as one of Kanami’s lead-guitar-solo show off’s. But it is not! It’s about all show off show case of each member’s musicality and skills in playing the instrumental. That’s fuck what we call “talent.”
The lead vocalist, Saiki, sits this one out.
Kanami - lead guitarist, essentially handles the vocals on this instrumental track as her guitar “sings” in her capable hands. Kanami is also the primary composer so she definitely wrote this piece as a bit of a showcase for her constantly evolving skills.
The silver rhythm guitar player is Miku Kobato, the band founder. She primarily sings backing vocals but does sing lead on a few songs, too. They are incredible! 🤘🏼🔥🎸🎤🎼🙌🏼😀✌🏼

Loved your reaction! About the way I feel with every new song of theirs lol. They are truly a force! Kanami (Ka-na-me) is the lead guitarist. She's also the composer. Akane (Ah-ka-neh) is drummer, MISA is (Me-Sa) Bass, Miku (Me-coo) is rhythm guitar, vocals, and the does most of the lyrics. Saiki (Sai-key) the singer is of course not there for this one. Okay, names, pronunciation, nicknames, and roles, in order that they joined the band.
Miku Kobato - mee-koo - Kuruppo, the Little Pigeon, the Little Engine Who Will - band founder, backing (and occasionally lead) vocals, rhythm guitar, principal lyricist, tireless Spokespigeon and PR machine. Wielder of weapons grade cuteness. So determined to see her band succeed that she fired herself as lead singer (she decided her voice wasn't strong enough for hard rock), then went looking for a replacement. Learned to play guitar after the band was formed.
Kanami Tono - kah-nah-mee - Kanamincho or just Mincho - lead guitar, keyboards, principal composer and arranger. On stage, she's a savant mad riffer with a room temperature IQ and a huge crush on Saiki. In reality, she's a genius, and not just musically- she has a degree in economics with honors from Tokyo University.
Akane Hirose - ah-kah-neh - A-chan, the Gorilla - drums, sequencing, snacks, the leader the band doesn't have. What you see is what you get- a cheerful jock with a huge appetite who burns off the calories murdering her drums. Frequently snacks between songs.
MISA - mee-sah - the Barefoot Assassin, MISA MISA MISA! - bass, booze, occasional wet work. Usually stone faced. Barely acknowledges the audience's existence. Always has a beer or a bottle of Jim Beam on her Orange amp. Originally, these were ways of coping with stage fright. These days, that's just how the assassin rolls.
Saiki Atsumi - sah-ee-kee (but Psyche is close enough) - the Ice Queen, Sensei, Sai-chan - lead vocals, some lyrics, the "We're done" girl. Fashionista and train nerd. In total command on stage; hides behind Miku off stage (she's actually kind of shy). Obviously, she isn't in this video.
Her name is kanami and yes she is a master on the guitar

I saw them play this live in Dallas last year. You just have to see it and hear it yourself because it's impossible to describe the energy this group has. They are starting a US tour soon too. Another group starting a US tour like next week is Otoboke Beaver. Four crazy ladies from Kyoto. Well worth a listen if your not booked up but only if you like thrash punk type stuff.
遠乃 歌波 (Tōno Kanami where 歌 is "song" and 波 is "wave"). The lighting is low, her PRS is red. She calls it "angry Larry" although no one seems to know who Larry is or why he is angry. She wrote the song and (probably) plays the piano and strings on the backing tracks.

One of Kanami's influences is jazz guitarist Larry Carlton so maybe her guitar is an angry version of Larry's style.

On their recent U. S. tour I was about ten feet away from her and she is absolutely stunningly beautiful in person.

Yup, "Thrill" was good, but more of an intro' because it was very early in their development as a band, and it was written for them because they weren't allowed their own material.

There is no Black Guitar. Kanami is the lead guitarist. Her guitar is the Purple PRS, but it looks black under certain lighting. Sometimes she plays a green PRS. Miku is the rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist. She has the metal faced Zemaitis Flappy Pigeon, her Signature Guitar. Sometimes she lays a differnt Zemaitis. She has all of them. MISA is on a Black Cloud Black Smoker, the rest of her Black Clouds are custom one offs.

well they are band maid a group of very talented and beautiful japanese woman who are reminding the western world that music can actually be played to a huge level and without any ego. Kanami is one of the most talented guitar players around she is definately one of the best heavy rock music composers around. Misa the bass player cute as hell but supper talented on her bass. Akane the drummer currently one of the type rock drummers in the world (regardless of gender) miku the one and only pigeon learnt how to play from her sensei kanami and can throw down a good vocal track as well. Throw in Saki and well who can argue the ice queen of the band.
Oh, and by the way...listen to Nemophila " Dissension". I like to see your mouth standing open again, they have two insane lead guitarists. A little more in Metal dsirection, but also 5 insane girls.
