Yeah, it takes about ten years for HIV to progress to AIDS, and life expectancy is on average one to two years after that. So unless Justin was sharing needles or having unprotected sex at the age of six, I call bullshit on this storyline. But even so, he didn’t exhibit any symptoms until like RIGHT before he dies, and his symptoms were nowhere near as horrific and bad as they actually are when you have end-stage AIDS. My main gripes are how badly and inaccurately they portray HIV/AIDS and how they totally lost the opportunity to show how being HIV+ isn’t a death sentence in the 21st century. They just went for the shock factor.

I just hate the fact that the writers used HIV and AIDS as a way to kill off a character. People with HIV and AIDS are real people and this is disrespectful to them. If the writers let Justin live with HIV (not giving him AIDS) and used this as a way to promote getting tested more often and safer sex practices, it would have been more meaningful. It could have been a good way of eliminating the stigma of being diagnosed with HIV or AIDS. But since they ran out of time, they did not even bother to research facts about HIV and AIDS.

      @ryancarson6962 Před 4 lety +88

Veronica Gagliardi Yes Monty was a bastard, trust me you won’t see me arguing that point, but that still doesn’t make what Clay and company did *okay* in the slightest. They still protected a murderer by pinning it on someone who didn’t even commit the crime, still lied to the cops, ultimately corrupting the investigation process by giving them false information, and they all do this for Alex despite him previously being willing to let Clay take the fall for him just so he will be in the clear. The idea that what they did is fine because the victims of their actions were assholes who deserve it seems counterintuitive to the whole plot of the show. Were we not supposed do things like protecting our friends when they commit a crime? Wasn’t that the whole reason why Bryce’s inner circle were wrong for protecting him to save their hides? Tell me, would Bryce’s rapes be justified then if his victims were assholes? I think we both know the answer to that question, NO. If Bryce should’ve been exposed then so should Alex. It’s wrong to cover up for criminals, even if they’re your friends, when they commit a crime, no matter how horrible the victim of the crime might be, that doesn’t make their actions any less wrong.

I’m surprised that people don’t talk about the shooting episode more. They could have provided some important social commentary about how traumatizing it is and what the recovery process is like. Instead Diego starts yelling about how he wants to be a hero which actually puts his team at greater risk of being found by the shooter, and he even challenges Justin to risk his life if he really loves Jessica. So when he does, and they start making out, the shooting doesn’t become a traumatic event, it becomes a romantic backdrop to their love story. No one knew it was a drill at the time so the fact that everyone’s still so focused on their social lives rather than survival at that moment is kind of concerning.

They have to see every single issue that kids today face, all at the same time. The graduates practically deserve a medal. They went to class a few times, and survived bullying, fighting, almost killing or actually killing each other, a serial r*pist, multiple criminal conspiracies and cover ups, hard drug usage, school shooting, sleep deprivation, and shitty parenting.

As it became less self important and more of a crappy teen drama, it stopped inciting real, vulnerable viewers to end their lives. The series has clearly gotten worse and worse, but it's also stopped killing real people, so maybe that means it's actually gotten better and better and has become what it was always supposed to be: a harmless, overly melodramatic, young adult teen drama that takes itself way too seriously but says nothing about the teenage experience.

The Bryce, Monty and Hannah “ghosts” annoyed me at first but, as someone with MADD, I’ve warmed up to the concept. To those who don’t know, MADD stands for “maladaptive daydreaming disorder”, a disorder where patients who have it will spend several minutes, sometimes even hours in an extremely vivid paracosm (imaginary world) while pacing, driving, listening to music or even jumping around, anything stimulating really to feel more in the zone while daydreaming. Now I’m not saying that Clay definitely has that disorder, but it’s common for people with MADD to feel attached to paras (aka characters in their paracosm) to the point of having full conversations with them or even preferring those exchanges over interactions with real people. Some people even become addicted to their daydreams, and will slip into one without even trying. Now if you combine that with psychosis, which Clay DEFINITELY has, and it makes a lot of sense why the “ghosts” would be popping up more randomly but especially more during stressful times, like a school shooter drill for example. Clay even says that he’s just “imagining what they would say” back to him when he’s “talking” to them. I doubt that the writers actually put that much thought into it though so this isn’t like a theory that Clay canonically has MADD or anything like that. However, if they had written the ghost scenes with Clay having MADD in mind, I feel like that would’ve changed how they presented it and it would’ve made a lot more sense. It would just fit with the story in general seeing that Clay isn’t the best with social interactions and lives his life as if he’s the protagonist in a movie. Not to mention that other characters have daydreams throughout the series too.

Things that didn’t make sense to me about this season:
The funeral not being consistent in every episode
Zach going off the deep in for no particular reason? And did not get better? He knew he didn’t kill Bryce...so why?
Alex was the one that killed Bryce and he BARELY had any scenes of him feeling guilt over that. It mainly focuses on his relationships and figuring out he’s gay. Like why make him the killer if he doesn’t even care?
The random moments of clay hallucinating things that didn’t happen. Why is he the one freaking out? He didn’t do anything to Bryce. Why is he the one going crazy making himself look even worse?
Making Tyler look suspicious for no reason?
Entire episodes with random things going on like a camping trip and parties?
Making clay and Zach seem like they have rapist tendencies?
Killing off Justin for literally no reason and so quickly just so the other characters mad about Monty’s death would back off leading to 0 consequences and threats for nothing?
The crazy wreck just to lead to minor bruises and no cops involved?
The gun dealer guy shooting at nobody?
Bringing Monty’s sister into the picture none other than a date for Tyler?
It’s like the writers just called riverdale and was like hey give us writing advice?

Also why kill monty and bryce if they gonna bring them back as ghosts that haunt only clay? I mean sure they were pieces of shit but why kill them if u keep on using them why not just let them live and be like ok they are in prison now and clay is paranoid because he thinks they will some day come free and hunt him or something why not do that instead of killing them off. Also what doesnt make sense to me is monty was like a day in prison and the writers are like well …we cant use him anymore apperantly so how about we dont show how he dies but we write a story around it how he died in prison. By an inmate killing him or something like wtf ? At least make it make sense why go through the effort to put him in prison when u would kill him off anyways . And lastly for the love of god , how do these writers view males ? Especially athletes because they literally created a whole club for the athletes to take some pictures of girls and then blackmail them into having sex with them ? It was like watching a show written by hardcore feminists that scream all men are bad and they rape. Like i know the show is to spread awarness but aside from tonys boyfriend there was no sane person on this show. Tbh i felt bad for monty a bit because of the thing with his dad , and im so mad that the writers decided to make him this asshole that had to feel like he needs to prove himself and make him rape tyler with the broomstick (which was the most disturbing scene ever , not even hannahs suicide was that disturbing than that) like he had some sort of potential to be somewhat of a good character now that bryce was gone , but no remember all men are bad and rapists

I think if they wanted to cover so many topics (rape, suicide, prejudice, school shootings, etc) they should have done different stories. Kinda like Black Mirror, except full seasons instead of episodes

I loved the first season because of the directions it took outside of the book. While it followed it pretty faithfully, it also added a lot of depth to the characters and the impact Hannah made on everyone named in the tapes. Readers only saw Clay’s POV so whenever a character was mentioned in a tape, readers never intimately got to know them besides what Hannah said of them or Clay’s feelings about them. I was glad they did a season two because it left the question of “What if the school was held liable by the death of Hannah for not helping her?” I know many people that said that season 2 wasn’t as good as season 1 but I thought it was a great closure for the characters accepting what the tapes did to them. If the show wrapped it up in season 2, I would have felt closure with the story of Hannah. But they left it open ended for season 3 which revolved around a character that didn’t need to be in the spotlight. I thought Tyler was going to be the main focus and he wasn’t. There was some foreshadowing in season 4 but all they did was make him look like a villain even though he hasn’t done anything worse than what Clay has been doing in season 4 and Clay gets rewarded with prom and a speech at graduation? Thats bull. Season 3 and 4 clearly favor to Clay even though there were many interesting characters and their storylines that could have been restored. Hell, I came up with a better plot for season 4: to tie in the “13” motif of the show, Hannah’s mom could have sent Clay a list Hannah made of “13 things to do before graduation.” Each episode centered around Clay and the group honoring Hannah during their senior year while also tying loose ends from their craggy relationships. Each task they do, brings them closer. Now THAT would have been an interesting ending to the show. Something light hearted, not so serious, yet still close out the show. I kind of want this season to be remade like the many fans of “Game of Thrones” wanted a different season 8.
