  • We just made a 1700 mile drive from NY to CO, experiencing great weather and smooth flat roads - until we were approached by a trooper at a rest stop in Iowa. This will go into my story book as one of the strangest occurrences to happen to us while traveling.

My name is David and with my dog Lefty we live full time in our converted ambulance RV. I made this change to my 'standard' life and you can too! Like, subscribe and comment - Lefty would appreciate it - he wants the adventures to keep coming!
The Campulance is a 2002 Ford E450 Marque Commando 164 Class III ambulance powered by the Ford 7.3l Powerstroke diesel engine and a 4 speed transmission. Lefty is a 65lb Staffordshire Terrier (best I can tell) that came from the Verona Street Animal Shelter in March 2014 at the age of 9 months. We have been living full time in the campulance since July 2019.

Trooper was probably full of crap about "reports". He's asking you questions to see how you respond because you have out of state plates and your driving a vehicle capable of carrying large amounts of drugs across the country. Lawyer stuff, the more information you voluntarily give, the more information he has to work with to try to find a crime.

Great video! We took a 7 week 7000 mile trip in Serenity, our '09 chevy shuttle bus in June/July, did some of the same route. Stopped at the rest area with the windmill blade. Iowa rest stops don't allow outdoor smoking, which isn't so bad if you have a vehicle to smoke in, but if you're on a motorcycle, it sucks. Happy National Doggo Day to Lefty! Every time we stopped, my hound dog Buddy's nose went to the ground instantly, I should have called the trip "Buddy Smells America Tour".

  • @FairyChild_For_Freedom-Justice

Rule number one I was told by a police officer you do not answer questions. You simply say I'm sorry I do not answer questions if you're pulled over in a vehicle they'll ask you for ID but ask what did I do wrong do not give any information other than your driver's license your insurance and your registration do not answer questions they make a mountain out of the molehill by your answers they create problems they create situations next you know they feel they smell and imaginary smell coming out of your car police are allowed to lie to you it shouldn't be but it is never give any information do not volunteer anything just simply politely say I don't answer questions it's your fifth amendment right

Nice riding with you guys. A bit further south and west the Trooper would have been asking how many "guest workers" you had on board. You have done a nice job making the vehicle clearly no longer an ambulance. A few states must still allow people to leave the emergency lights on them, or don't enforce restrictions. Stay safe.

big difference between you & me, is I cannot stomach traveling on freeways! It's like a damn racetrack out there! Everyone is doing 80 or even 90 mph's! I don't get what the big hurry is...plus how much more dangerous it is!
We've got all these wonderful electronical distractions that keep us from watching the roads, not to mention the extra fuel consumption it takes to go this fast.
    No thanx.
    Not for me.
I stick to the old 2-lane highways as much as humanly possible. You travel at a much saner pace, and you still go through small town America. I Love seeing how folks from other parts of the country live. This is indeed a beautiful country we get to live in.

A cop will say someone reported/called about this or that just to use as an excuse to talk to you.
Yes, it can rattle one's nerves. I have had one good interaction with a cop, I'm still thankful for him. I was accused of something during an exceedingly stressful time in life back in 06... he sat there with me in my living room where I lived a quiet life alone and listened, and not as a law enforcement officer, but as one with empathy. He understood... he believed me.
I've had a lot of bad interactions, years worth. No... it was nothing within my control, I was much too young. *no reason for detail* I'll admit those years of very bad interactions tainted my overall view of cops, I wish it weren't so.
Listening to the news this morning, hearing the voice and words of a grieving mother who just lost her son in Afghanistan... the sadness of it all has probably prompted me to 'talk' here more than I should...
I'm alone in these latter years, up in age... it shows. =]
I'm sorry for your experience... I feel it. I hear 'cop' and I feel anxiety. PTSD
I'm currently building out my van to live out of, live out of by choice. 'The knock' is my greatest concern as that anxiety truly goes through the roof... it'll always be on my mind. In fact, I might not be able to do it for this reason alone... a constant fear.
Back to that cop mentioned... I wish it were possible to see him again, to thank him. He genuinely cared and I'll forever be grateful. I hope he's well, hope he's still the man I met and has not let the job change him.
Ya know... I may, thinking about him today, send a message of appreciation via that small town's department's Facebook page. I'd like that...
    I'd better start this day...
I apologize for 'talking' so much but your post, and the content of the news today, and the fact I stare at four walls most days, have encouraged me to talk surely more than I should. =]
    All the best!

Why do you speed across the country so quick? Don’t you want to just take different routes and see new places? Seems like you travel right through to your destination and miss out on a lot of the country side. Do more exploring and take your time. I bought my ambulance but I feel it’s to see and experience what each state has to offer not just drive right through it.

Hi David, well what a wonderful drive,so green & healthy, especially the little stops for Lefty. Over here in Queensland Australia,it’s also very green out west ,where the temperature gets up to your 108 degrees. We are in an La Niña circle now ,the 3rd. One this year. So we have had a lot of rain. Very good for all the Cattle & Sheep Stations & Farmers, this will set them up for a few years into the future. Anyway best of luck on your trip & give Lefty a big hug ,what a lovely dog.Elaine from Aussies Land.

Of course he thought it was you. Cops will loose their minds when they can no longer search vehicles for pot in a few years. They are like dogs in heat when it comes to trying to search your vehicle for a flake of pot residue. For them every stop and every conversation with a driver is made with the intention of entering your personal information into their data base and the hope they can con you into letting them search your vehicle. BTW, ‘ol Lefty is a beautiful dog.

Sounds like a gambit to search your vehicle. Don't fall for it, and don't consent to any searches. They will find "something" wrong, to write a ticket (or worst, confiscate the vehicle) to an out-of-state vehicle. Money, for the state.
