My sister in law asked if she should get a quest 2 for my 12 year old nephew. I told her that if she does, it would require supervision while she plays. Since there are a lot of things that are not meant for someone of her age, VRchat wouldn't be a good environment for her. I know of the great things that Vrchat offers, but it comes to a point where someone should be mature enough to discern them.

A lot of kids the I meet in vrc are relatively chill, they have times as to where they'll ya'know, act like kids and they're just having fun and enjoying themselves, and as a kid myself, it feels so nice for people just to talk to you and treat you like an equal and not yell at you for being a kid, heck I've met some adults who act like a child more than I do! In the end, kids are trying to have fun, so let them have fun!

Honestly speaking, the squeakers from my experience had always been more fun to hang out with than people my age.
I really wish I was kidding, I've met more people in their mid 20's to late 30's that act like total cavemen than I had squeakers being loud and annoying. More often than not, they fear confrontation with their lives unless they're in a group; when they're by themselves, they do the classic "go up to your face, talk shit then run like they're getting chased by an emu" technique whereas a squeaker stands his ground and gets louder which isn't nearly as pathetic as the former.

as someone who has a relatively deep voice for a 16 year old who plays vrchat regularly, most people think im 19-20 so people don't avoid me because of that. But we were all little kids at one point in time. I think the we should just let them be kids and not shame them for being immature. Little kids are little kids, and they do stupid things sometimes. If you don't want to hear a little kid, there was a block button made for a reason.

Honestly at this point it falls on the parents, the culture of vrchat has so many aspects that kids shouldn’t be apart of, but every way I can think of to separate these kids from the abundance of adult content is a nightmare. I try to treat kids with respect and talk to them as I would anyone else because I always hated being treated like a kid when I was that age. I was one of those kids who was generally more mature than many my own age in some respects and so I know what it’s like to have people think you’re just some dumb kid when you actually are able to have decently educated conversations with people decades older than you. Now that I’m 22, I still get some stigma because I still look 17 or 18 plus people just view me as a young adult, not as an adult. Yes I still have learning to do from experience, as do these kids, but that doesn’t mean I’m not willing to be taught by those who do have more life experience than me. I’ve been able to give good advice to my VRC friends who are a few years younger than me because I have more life experience than they do and also know where they’re coming from because I was there myself just a handful of years ago.

  • @BranVR
    @BranVR Před rokem +84

As much as i personally dislike kids in vrchat and find a huge amount of them to be annoying and extremely loud, i find myself actually blocking way more "adults" because of their rudness and desire to be an edgy memer, and i think its because they are an adult but still act as if they were 12 leads me to blocking them immediately. I expect kids to be kids, but not grown men and women to act like immature children.
Just the other day was in the spider lair and actually got in to an interesting conversation with a 14 year old and a 16 year old about vr tech and other random stuff, but during that conversation i ended up blocking 4 or 5 people that were clearly in their 20s that invaded our convo with racial slurs, insults, shitty music blasting, etc. Not to say kids dont ever do this, but i actually find most kids are just trying to have fun, while alot of "adults" are trying to get reactions from people.
Yes i would prefer to primarily interact with people my age(27), but i rather have a fun convo with someone younger then get called all types of names and slurs by a grown man. Its definitely a tough question to answer, but with what ive experienced over the last 4.5 years, people are people and the block button is a powerful tool to remove anyone you dont wish to interact with, whether young or old .
Sidenote: someone in that same spider lair lobby criticized me for blocking said people, saying thats not how social interaction works, and my response to this was, this is vrchat and i will block anyone i dont want to interact with, you dont have to block them, but i dont wish to be called names by random people while im talking to someone, and thats what i choose to do to have the experience i want to have.

Vrchat definitely depends on the kid’s maturity, I have been playing since 2018 when I was 11 years old, I’m now 15 and I’ve met some amazing friends. I even visited one of them with my mom with me. We got Korean BBQ together. When I first played I got blocked because of my age or was harassed because being a girl in vrchat back then was like seeing pigs fly. In early 2019, I’ve decided do go mute for the rest of the time I played because it got so bad that I was scared to talk to anyone because I might get rejected and ostracized by everyone. Out of my observation of the 4+ years I’ve played Vrchat, I mostly see the adults that are immature, maybe because they know they won’t get judged as often as they would irl, I’m not sure.
My advice for the kids that play Vrchat or are new to the game, do not be a nuisance to other players, don’t be trolls, STOP SAYING RACIAL SLURS, and stay away from child predators. Look alive kids, you will be exposed to toxic, ostracization, and loadssssssss of nudity if not careful.

If they are being normal, treat them like you would treat your friends child. If they are being really annoying or disruptive, just block them. Iv had some fun convos with some kids, it can be fun. It can make you feel like a more responsible and mature adult when your being nice to little kids in vrc.
Just be nice y’all, and also, watch out for yourself when it comes to your happiness.

Great vid! With my experience most of the kids I come across in vr chat seem to be toxic. Always up in your face and screaming in the mic. I've only met a hand full of kids in vr chat that wasn't toxic. Some parent's just don't care what their kids do just has long as they are not bugging them and that's just sad. I have 2 kids of my own and they both have VR and on VR Chat but they are only allowed in private worlds with family and selective friends. I'm also in that world keeping an eye on things. Half of my family are from Japan so we use VR Chat to help stay in touch easier.

I've seen kids literally run around in NSFW avatars. That's the grossest thing, and what's even more frightening is how easily they are exposed to this kind of content. And then force it for others to view. Once in a while, you find the cute wholesome kid just trying to make friends and enjoy the game. And often times if you shows them kindness, they'll go from troll to being nice. However, their maturity level is nowhere near enough for this game. I'm not against kids having their own space, but vrchat at its current state is just not ready for it. It should be 18+ unless we can get an actual system for age verification. 90% of the time my interactions with kids have been pretty negative and toxic towards me. Spoiled little brats growing up to be our next generation homophobes and racist people.

Same with the first three sentences. One of the kids I've met tends to have an NSFW status (it's occasionally something like "BIG BOOBA!!" or smthn similar) and then constantly wear FNIA avatars. They also constantly talk about sex, which is really concerning...
And I'll be honest, content restrictions (adding certain trigger warnings in Unity before uploading) when uploading avatars and worlds does absolutely nothing from what I've seen. It just leaves a small warning on the site's page.
I really suggest adding a little keypad in world's to keep kids out of em. As well as monitoring your kid's activity weekly or every now and then. Make sure users they're friends with are at least around their age range, and if they're almost adults interacting with them, ask them to screen share their experience!

I've experienced both sides of this (sort of). When I was 13 and still had a very high voice I had a really bad experience with VRChat. I wasn't getting bullied that often, but I was ignored almost constantly by any older guy that I tried to talk to. It was really off-putting for me, especially because I was never bothering anyone or being annoying, I just wanted to socialize with people and have some fun conversations. Eventually I stopped playing because of it. I came back just after I turned 15 and my voice had changed drastically. My experience was wayyy better after my voice changed, people were more inviting and I wasn't getting picked on in every world I went to. One time I went to a world that lets you fly planes and I met a kid (probably 12-13 years old) and chatted with him for a bit. He did have some of the "immature internet 12 year old" stereotypes but he wasn't annoying at all. I started telling him about my past experiences on VRChat and he said he's been having the same thing. I didn't friend request him and felt kind of bad about it but we didn't really have anything in common besides being bullied on VRChat so I just let it go. Honestly, I don't think there's such thing as a perfect solution for this, but the best thing I can come up with is some sort of maturity ranking, or linking the trust ranking to one's maturity (as voted by other people).

It's the way that people treat kids in Vrchat that's making me really consider just leaving it for good, even though it's fun. I'm not a socially anxious person irl, I can go up to a random person and have a really nice conversation, but boy, is that not the case in Vrchat. This is because people seem to change their demeanor when around me, even from me just offering a simple hello. I might be confident one day (which is rare) and go up to a group of people having fun, but when i say something, it feels like I'm a pest to them and that they're just trying to not include me so that i go away. It works. Now, I know what some might say: "Well, you might just be annoying." I dont want to be arrogant or self-righteous, but im not unless i try. All of my friends have said that im not an annoying person and that im really chill, and i never try to deliberately get into trouble or annoy somebody unless its my friend, so I really dont know what these peoples' problems are. Like i said, i experience injustice daily as a kid on Vrchat, and i think that it is really unfair that i am unable to make friends on a game that is entirely based on socialization.
Until then, I'll just have to hope that my voice deepens soon. Puberty, do me justice...

So far i have only seen the "bad" side of kids in VrChat. I have in the past had basically every stereotypical thing that comes to mind happen, from micspamming, general missbaviour, to racist stuff, to homophobia/transphobia and all that from kids who got access to VRChat through their parents or something similar. Now i am not the guy who gets angry at this type of thing,i usually stay calm and in 90% of cases don´t talk to them. Because of this i have been adovcating deviding the game into an adult and a kids section, and even tho that idea has a variety of flaws and issues i know of, saftey for the kids and peace of mind for the adults was allways my argumentation regarding the idea.

As someone who often visits the FNAF and Hazbin worlds I can say dealing with kids in VRC is a mixed bag. My main course of action is to just talk with them and if they are rude or too loud I just lower their volume and move on with my day. If they are being toxic then I just ignore them with their volume either muted or at 5% depending on how I feel.

In my opinion, VRChat just needs to actually use their content tags for filtering. Avatar and world creators are already expected to mark avatars as NSFW, having excessive gore, etc, but the game never does anything with it. What they should really do is outright refuse to allow avatars with certain tags to be used in public worlds, forcibly switching users to other avatars, and hiding avatars with those tags for other users on the off chance that some bug or hack allows people to load into them anyways. The system should also be expanded to add in other tags, and allow users above certain age limits to enable or disable different tags as filters depending on whether or not they want to be able to see those kinds of avatars. Actually, ChilloutVR already has this kind of a system implemented, and it even allows people to tag individual parts of avatars so the whole avatar doesn't have to be blocked, and instead portions can just be disabled. Of course, this all hinges on creators marking avatars properly, which means they would need to be held accountable to tag avatars properly through reporting. This doesn't fix the issue of the actual people, but it at least fixes the issues with avatars.
As for verifying age, they could do what other companies have been required to do by COPPA and confirm your age with ID for anyone who self reports to be over 18 to try and eliminate people faking their age

TBH, I agree with the maturity part of kids playing on VRCHAT. As I am a minor who plays on vrchat but, I feel like there should be a vote kick system in every VRCHAT game (like recroom) let’s a say this, a child joins a world in VRCHAT that is meant for 18+ users. If those users in that room are 18+ they should probably be able to detect the child (probably by their voice or the child says they are under 18) and Vote kick the child off of the game for 24 hours. That’s my personal take on it. I just simply stay away from places that are only for 18+ users.

I typically don't speak in the game until I have made sure that the group I'm playing with is okay. I tend to wear more masculine avatars but have a feminine voice as I am a pre-T trans man. It's typically the younger players I see just blasting music or having avatars that could crash other or have nsfw options. I've been harassed for having a furry avatar many times. It's almost always younger players. There's nothing wrong with children playing the game but it needs to be monitored.

As a parent, it is the parent's responsibility to monitor their kids, it's not VRC's responsibility. It's in the ToS what is and isn't allowed. If they find proof, they do ban underage kids, but it's difficult for them to have 100% ACTUAL proof that they are a kid. All that being said, a parent is suppose to check up on their kid, see what they are doing, and teach their kids the right and wrongs of the world.

I’m a child myself that plays vrchat, no I’m not some sort of troll or anything, I’m 14 and yet many people have said I am mature for a 14 year old (I truly do not understand what they mean, I’m just more mature in public than I am normally) and I also apparently sound like a “depressed college student” and I don’t know if that’s a compliment of an insult, cause on one hand I don’t sound like a child, but at the same time I don’t wanna sound depressed, and my age has been mistaken many times saying they thought I was 17-20, and earlier today someone said I sounded over the age of 20 and truly believes I’m 20 now even though I told him I’m 14 just assuming I’m some sort of predator, so that was fun lol, and sounding like this has also gotten people over the age of 18 to try and say some very strange things and stuff, so either before they continue saying these things they check my bio and realize I’m 14, or I just look them in the eyes and say “I personally wouldn’t say this to a 14 year old.. you should probably stop now” and most of the time they run away, so that’s usually fun, but I feel like the whole 18+ worlds and minor roles would be neat as long as they don’t affect the ranks and create a whole new rank system, I would gladly mark myself as my age if that did become a thing, the only problem is judging by the whole anti cheat thing I doubt vrchat is really listening to any of our suggestions anymore if they were to begin with.

    I'm 100% in favour of getting kids out of spaces with individuals 18 or older and here's why;
Having seen two of my friends get railroaded by the legal system due to kids (first instance was a 13yr old posing as a 20yr old. Second instance was a 16yr old posing as 18) being in places and partaking in activities they shouldn't, is a glaring problem that no one seems to want to tackle. Seeing what happened to them, ngl, spooked the shit out of me and made me realize how damning being falsely accused can be, especially when it involves minors.
For clarification, said minors were partaking in sexually suggestive activities which is what started this downward spiral. I don't know the exact details of what was done and/or said.
My friends lives are forever ruined and backgrounds stained because the honour system was circumvented (as it always is in a lot of cases) and the law came down on them with the ferocity of a god. Meanwhile , the brats that caused this mess get no punishment whatsoever. It's disproportionate AF.
And before anyone tries the argument that 'well, you can obviously hear in their voice that they're younger.' or 'just report them and disengage from them.' etc
    1. Not all preteens physically mature the same. My brother and I sounded and looked a lot older than we were when we were 13 and we sort of grew into our voices and size.
    2. All it takes is some self righteous Karen/Kevin parent to find out and raise hell by getting law involved and when they catch up to you, your life as you know if is over.
Let's focus on #2: it's literally that easy. All it takes is an accusation for law to go full 'let's protect these poor, innocent children' mode, not question wtf a child was even doing with said person online. The law will railroad you and whoever your DA is, you can bet they will push hard to make the slew of charges stick.
So yes, get them the f* out of 18+ places entirely and do not allow mixing. Second Life did this very thing years ago and, assuming the users were being honest about their age, worked decently well with keeping 18+ and underaged out of each other's spaces.
It's largely why I won't interact with total strangers anymore in places like VRchat unless I know for sure they are 18+.
As far as how to effectively get them out, that is quite the topic that can get pretty heated. But I think the elephant in the room that needs to be addressed first (in North America) are the current laws on the books surrounding minors. The laws are archaic at best and are not designed to effectively assess situations like this were children and adults can come in contact, without the parent knowing, so much easier than before. Sort out the outdated laws and actually punish minors who willingly circumvent the honour system and maybe things will start to improve.

Nah, this is 100% the PARENTS responsibility for their kids and what they view. There are SO many ways to lock apps now days on ANY device. Parents just don't take the time to see what their child is doing online anymore. That's the sad reality. In my honest opinion, VRChat is NOT for kids, but that's because of user generated content. If there was a way to manage worlds and put an age blocker on them, it would help A LITTLE. Most kids lie when signing up for services. But some don't. The really shitty thing is I've experienced first hand adults creeping on kids, trying to get them to drink, do drugs, etc. This is why the club scene in VRChat is VERY strict about people being over 18. If there is even a WIFF of suspicion that someone is underage, we first ask them to leave, if they don't, then we kick them.
The internet as a whole is a lot different from when I(28) grew up. It's a lot more hostile in some ways, but there are so many safe guards for parents to block things. It's just not taken advantage of.
In closing, I think both of the people you interviewed missed the mark on this one, horribly.

Personally, i feel like the only way to solve this that makes pretty much everyone happy, is to age-gate certain content. I'd say to take a page out of, oddly enough, Sony's book. On the Playstation, when you input your age into an account upon creation, it locks you out of certain games and apps via parental controls, as well as preventing you from adding a payment method to that account to buy games, and sending an email to the parent's account when a purchase IS made, either through a giftcard or the wallet. When the user's age reaches 18, these parental locks are removed and the account is free to do whatever.
Theoretically, VRChat could implement Parental Controls, preventing children from viewing avatars and worlds that are tagged as NSFW or Adult, and it uses the age you put in when you create your VRC account as a baseline, keeping track of it and removing those locks upon turning 18.

I had some child force clone my avatar right in front of me and it also was a NSFW. In all I feel that VRC needs to make two sides of it. One being for the child and two for adults.
