I wouldn't call myself a furry, but if I had the choice to hang out with a group of depressed anime characters in front of a mirror or hang out with a group of fun, uplifting, and energetic furry people, I'm gonna hang with the furries.

Life time furry, the community is full of fans of anthropomorphic animals of every kind, there are also artists, content creators, pro gamers, dancers, performers, musicians, you name it they exist, there was a negative stigma about furries and sex in their culture that for the longest time was buried and denied because there were so few members of the community who made it awful, here we are more than 30 years later and a majority of us just don't care anymore, I told a few people that "ok yes the furries are having all the sex and everyone else is jealous" and for the most part the stigma has faded away and we are enjoyed as the artists and creators that we are now, I personally just am a member of the community because they are among the best people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting and being friends with, wouldn't change it for the world, good video by the way.

It also helps that the community has sane, rational, and articulate spokesfurries like Uncle Kage who hold down "normal" jobs and can speak in complete sentences, and are dedicated to showing the world that furries are just like any other subculture--they're just people who have an interesting, if not exactly mainstream, hobby and get very enthusiastic about that hobby. Yes, IMHO Kage does get a little hostile at times, but on the other paw (pun intended), if I had to tell the mainstream news media sniffing around for scandals to boost their ratings that "no, we DON'T have sex in fursuits; no, we DON'T have sex with animals; and no, we DON'T masturbate with our favorite plushies" for the millionth time, I'd probably get more than a little hostile from time to time myself.

I've been part of some communities for a while, and probably one of the most common things that people get wrong about furries is that "aLl FuRrIeS aRe ZoOpHiLeS." This is heavily blown out of proportion, as only a percentage of a percentage of the furry fandom does that. In fact, many furries look down on zoophiles. Honestly, take some time and get to know a community a little, and you'd be surprised how friendly and overall fun it can be. The vast majority of them are just people who like to hang out and chat with people who share similar interests. They've accepted the whole UwU and OwO thing as basically a meme at this point (I have yet to encounter a furry who unironically says those in a conversation). Oh and don't get me started on the artwork and animations some of them can pull off.
Overall, the fandom is vastly misunderstood, and is usually heavily bullied by outsiders who get their information from other outsiders rather than actually checking and doing research themselves.

For instace there've been several times I've seen furries get votekicked or crashed simply because they're a furry which is kinda fucked up. This seems like a really odd interview/really odd answers coming from the folks you asked questions to, and it really puts in perspective what Gen Z culture thinks furries are, versus what people who have been in the fandom for 10+ years feel.
For me, the definition of a furry is: Someone who likes anthropomorphic animals in art.
A fursona is a representation of yourself as an anthro animal. Someone can have multiple fursonas to represent different aspects of them, but usually they have one core fursona.
Not all furries are creatives/artists, some just enjoy the art.
Some furries wear fursuits. The fursuits can either be of their fursona, or just of a character design of an anthro animal that they think looks neat! It's like having a VRChat avatar in real life. Fursuits are extremely expensive, with heads alone usually costing more than $1000 from most makers.
There is definitely a lewd part to the fandom and there's no denying that, but it isn't what the fandom is about as a whole. (Additionally, the lewd part of the fandom should absolutely be kept away from minors.)
As a "fandom", furry is interesting because there's no one media that everyone bases their creations off of. Furry fandom is self-sustaining, creating its own content, with all money going to and from artists within the fandom itself. There is no corporate presence. While many furries like Disney's talking animal movies for example, it isn't a fandom based on Disney alone. Furry is honestly more like punk: DIY-based, community-based, and promoting the creativity of the community and rejection of the norm. Punk also lends itself into the queer community.
A huge part of furry fandom is that it is inherently queer. According to studies like Furscience and others, only 20% of the fandom identifies as exclusively straight/cis. Furry fandom is all about expressing yourself in ways that feel true to who you are on the inside in a welcoming environment, which encourages and attracts a lot of LGBT folks. The need to express a form of yourself differently from how you look in real life also hits home with a lot of the queer community. This also goes as far as expressing yourself differently in how you act; a large group of furries feel like they can be more outgoing and social when in fursuit.
There are of course a few bad apples that spoil the bunch, but the majority of the fandom condemns them, and it's infinitely frustrating that these folks seem to be getting the most attention. Almost all conventions are working to make sure the unsavory folks know they are not welcome here.
Overall, I'd say the takes of the people interviewed in this video are kinda surface-level at best. They may be young, new to the fandom, or have their only furry experience be on VRchat. Weirdly, I find way more hate for furries on VRchat and tiktok, places more dominated by younger folks, than on twitter, at actual conventions, or just in day to day life irl. There's so much more to the fandom, even within VRchat itself! I promise there's much nicer furs out there within the VR world. Definitely try to visit when a VR con is going on!

    • @mattwolf7698
      @mattwolf7698 Před 2 lety +19

I'm thinking there's more furry hate on TikTok and VRChat because a lot of the players are relatively young, kids just tend to be edgy at those ages. Some also like to bully people but people are kind of running out of things to bully, for example 10 years ago people still made fun of LGBT people to an extent and nerds were also still somewhat uncool back then, you are rightfully considered a bigot now if you bully and LGBT person and nerds are considered cool now so edgy kids have to look for more out there things to bully.
Also, they are just immature, college was a lot less annoying than high school for me. People would mock people over stupid things in high school (and god forbid middle school) but by college nobody cares anymore. I'm now openly a furry to some of my non-furry friends who are in their mid 20's and nobody cares about it.

As part of the furry community when the stigma was around you can't go anywhere online without getting harassed or bullied, as of late a lot more people are accepting the community and it makes socializing way easier, I myself am a Furry artist and just love the art that the community makes, not to mention how open people are for people with something special like disabilities or so on. Overall I don't think I will be leaving the community any time soon.

A large part of that is because of the old stereotype of furries being into bestiality, sex in fursuits, and screwing plushies because of some really bad PR back in the "good old days" when furry fandom was branching off from SF/Fantasy fandom in general. Fortunately, 98% of the furry crowd is just there to have a good time, enjoy some nice art by folks like Monica Livingston or Max the Black Rabbit or stories by writers like Royce Day, and have been good examples of what furry fandom is REALLY about so that the stigma is slowly fading, just as how RPG players STILL have to explain how D&D is not either Satanic, won't drive you insane and make you run off into the sewers like in that stupid movie, and doesn't make you think you're Aragorn from Lord of the Rings.

I tend to mirror dwell with my friends when not playing a game or soemthing. Personally it helps me for two reasons: one: the furry avatars I use are really complex and it gives me practice learning the different emotes through different hand positioning. That's actually the second reason for mirror dwelling. When hanging with friends to see and interact with others a little more comfortably.
Now to talk about the fursonas and things, do note I'm biased. Although it tends to be a way to express one's self in a safe environment. No fear of being seen as too edgy or constrained by how you look in real life. That being said I know that's not for everyone but I just figured it was worth adding.

So basically the simplest way to put it is that Furries are an art subculture. Specifically they like and appreciate Anthromorphic media and artwork. There are other art movements out there as well for example impressionists or surrealists, really there is no difference it's just a different style of art! "Anthromorphic" art is any media that has animal characters with human like traits, they could walk on two legs, wear clothes, and talk. Movies like "Wolfwalkers" and "The Cat Returns" are good examples.

    1. The Virtuefurence Map is actually 1:1 based on the Estrel Hotel in Berlin, which has held the annual furry convention "Eurofurence" since 2014. And that's just one of the numerous major furry conventions around the world.
    2. The most popular definition of furry/furry fandom consists of two elements: a) people fond of anthropormorphic animals, and b) acknowledging the presence of the fandom and consider themselves as parts of the community. Doesn't matter if you have fursonas, furry avatars, fursuits or else as they're not obligatory for being furries.
    3. Just like human societies, the furry community is composed of all kinds of personalities and traits, you may see artists, nerds, gamers, anime/sci-fi fans, roleplayers, scientists, occasionally, while cringy ones, trolls, mental diseased patients, horny furries do exist as well, and the fandom generally holds greater acceptance towards LGBTQ+ members, avoid holding specific stereotypes is advised.
    4. The fandom offers chances to express yourself with all kinds of ways, fursonas, avatars, fursuits, commissioned drawings, literature, musics are just common medium. By the way numerous content creators have benefited from taking commissions from furries and even make ends meet around the world.
Sorry for my nerdiness but the video doesn't seem to reach the core of what furries are. Hope this helps.

As a commission artist I had a lot of experience with furries and they generally are really nice and approachable people. Many furries' fursonas and avatars of choice do look off-putting in my eyes to varying degrees, but I won't just judge people based on a character or general look they personally enjoy.
It's stupid how people still, in this day and age, are very prone to hating on others just for liking something they don't.

  • @draceon

I've been a part of the community (on and off) for more or less 6-7 years at this point. I joined mostly due to some movies and TV shows I watched as a kid combined with a sudden interest for drawing and animating. I left for a while, thinking that people wouldn't respect me, or want to be friends with me if they knew I was a furry. However, my interest for drawing, animating, and 3D modeling hadn't gone away. Eventually I realized good friends would judge me based on my character, not my interests and I came back. In the community, there will always be people that do strange things like make animal noises, but I've seen far more people who are just there to talk about normal, though often nerdy, things like game design, drawing, animating, programming, tech, etc. And that is my personal reason for using VR Chat, I want to meet and talk to people with similar interests. I may look different from what I am in real life, but I'm still very much just the same regular dude I am outside of VR.
The one thing in your video I want to add on to is the snowflake argument. Though I personally can laugh off furry haters, there are more than enough people in the community with mental illnesses and depression. For a lot of them, insults hit way too close to home, especially if they're already being bullied in real life by people that threaten and commit acts of violence, or even just degrade them socially. I've been there and it isn't fun. That being said, there are of course also people that get unreasonably upset at others for saying negative things about furries, even if they are just meming. But, those cases are far less frequent and more often than not, people are quite justified in being upset.
Anyways I've rambled on for far too long, so if anyone actually reads this, thank you!

actually I took a college course about furries so I know about the historey and lore of furries. It all started when President John F. Kennedy authorized an attempt to overthrow the Cuban government of Fidel Castro in the failed Bay of Pigs Invasion in 1961. It's not common knowledge, however the bay of pig was in fact a bay of pig people. These people were pretending to be strange humanoid pig creatures. To kennedy's surprise however, the pig people were much stronger than anticipated. During a second attempt at invading the bay of pigs in 1963, the military brought bacon to fend off the pig people. Unfortunately their intel was wrong as the pig people had transformed into wolf people. The bacon backfired and they were slaughtered... The enemy wolf people were dubbed "Furries."
Everyone feared the furries. But eventually people learned to coexist and they formed their own island nation where furries prosper and yes you guessed it, play Vrchat. It is estimated that 69% of vrchat players are located in the furry island nation of Furrytopia.

I think it's important to not let things hurt or offend you too easily, especially if it's something people don't have the patience to understand.

Both terms are portmanteaus of their respective fandoms + the word persona, as in "Fursona" = "FURry perSONA" or "Steamsona" = "STEAMpunk perSONA". You should interview the Warhammer PVP community as someone who is apart of it we definitely have our ups and downs, particularly petty almost fully grown men ripping our avatars because they got blacklisted for being a racist ass.

I am one of them, i discovered the fandom back in 2020 and knowing absolutely nothing about them, and not googleing it (thankfully), i researched by looking at the more calm youtubers, and after about a year of research i came to the conclusion that they are just regular people with interest in anthropomorphic animals with human characteristics and/or traits that may hang out while expressing themselves in different ways, an example of which may be: wearing a fursuit (furry suit) which is just a suit based off a fursona (furry persona) and may roleplay as said fursona while in fursuit or in any form with the fursona, also speaking in "owo" or just replacing every r with a w hurts most of us to do.
Though there are "dark sides" to it, there is that side in every singular fandom

the 2 worlds are both very popular, the plain one in space is Furry Talk and Chill, it is optimized to just be very basic and give people places to talk, Furhub on the other hand has a TON of avatars, a TON of portals, a TON of art, and a nightclub so it is a hard world to run smooth.

Nice video, surprisingly. Respect for being adequate bro, and, as you wanted, my comment on your definition: it's alright, though there should be a mention that furry can mean the antropomorphic animal character itself too! Some people tend not to know about this.

i became a part of the furry fandom in 2018 im starting to slip a bit out of the fandom, but i still call myself a furry since i draw my oc's from time time and still love anthropomorphic animals, im really glad that when i joined the first thing i saw was the nice and cute part, i found a really cute video of a fursuit of a dutch angel dragon and i fell in love with it and made my own fursona that ended up being a dutchie(dutch angel dragon) since its the first interaction i had with the fandom and they're really cute. alot of furries draw, but not all of them and there arent actually that many furries that have a fursuit compared to how big the community is. thanks for making this video and putting us in a good light, it makes me and alot others very hapy!
