Rye didn’t renew its lease because the landlord jacked up the price. That’s Brooklyn and New York in general for you. Cal’s back in Boise, ID working on a new restaurant space but it’s not open yet.
Holy shit! That's amazing!! Thanks for the update man.
That's a shame.
When he said “a bunch of people just watched me drown”, I felt that.
I dont blame them 74% of restaraunts fail
I really hate medusa
no more medusa
this guy’s got a good spirit, super realistic
edit: even if his restaurant is closed... I’ve got no doubts he’s cooking for the right reasons for the right people.
Seriously?
Michael Wilson What do you mean?
@@thisiswilson all good restaurants close at some point.
Man I just hope this guy is doing alright, buddy just looks like he needs a hug...poor fellow
This is my all time favourite episode in the entire series. I always come back to watch this dude being the realest chef and I live by the same principles as him. Cooking good food and keeping that focus on feeding people who want to enjoy good food for the low and just have a good time. From reading the comments and finding out his place closed down, which saddens me, I hope he got open another one and still does what he loves doing
"I'm raw dogging the tempura."
...yes chef
This guy is so cool and down to earth
i wonder how many DVDs he owns. i have an illustrious collection
And the restaurant is closed lol
I tried to remember and find this series a few years ago but couldn't. Chefs Night Out is how I discovered Vice and the Munchies youtube channels and been watching ever since.
Cal looks stressed out, being a chef ain't easy, when your job is to impress every single one of your customers.
right? looks like he hasnt slept right in yearsss
This is the toxic culture thag we have right now. Chef today should take note from the advice of successful chef that are now retired. Almost all of them will tell you that you should cook from the heart and serve from the heart. We beat ourself up more becausw we think we are not good enough and thst we should be better for the people that we dont even know. You see a lot of the good chef that are happy actually retired onwing a simple casual restaurant which made them happier because they are cooking and serving what they want without thinking of any judgement that could destroy them.
still easier than being married lol
Nah, thats the 9 years of commercial fishing he mentioned tbh.
Love Chef’s Night Out. Cool to see the hardest working people let loose and enjoy some great food and drinks.
You can tell he works his ass off and has sooo much on his mind. I love his spirit and I can’t wait to support this business when I’m in town 👍🏼
Matthew Ledezma heard it got closed :/
You're late for the party brah
I heard he passed away
Luka.B he’s in idaho about to open a new restaurant
Damn that meatloaf sandwich looked banging
All the love to this dude. i remember watching this year ago. Real cook through and through. This industry isn't for the weak hearted
Had to visit this place after seeing this video. Found myself on the last day at Ryes right before it closed and the food was freaking bomb. The scotch eggs were amazing and the meatloaf was succulent and tender. Very sad this place is now gone and awaiting Cal Elliott's next restaurant!!
why rhey close rye bud?
I've read this restaurant closed due to not renewing their lease it's a shame he looked as though he enjoyed everything he did
When did it close?
2018
What a real, down to earth guy
Wow glad this episode was brought back and glad to see Munchies recognize this as one of the really great episodes
Love that guy, he seems really authentic!
No joke???
When you hear a chef on Munchies say "every dish makes sense" you know you're about to get hit with some real crazy shit
The chef at Samurai Mama is giving off the best vibes. We need more people in the world like him
a man ahead of his time
this rocks every time
so humble, like the guy
Best Food Show Ever.
I love this guy!
Cal has always been my favorite Munchies Chef. This dude deserves a great spot --- hope he's doing well.
Looks damn good!
This guy is awesome!
Good guy, good episode
Crazy this place isn’t even here anymore
The coolest chef.
This was good
Everyone hates the fucking sandwich but because he's drunk there just rolling with it lol I love munchies man
♥️♥️♥️
Wish I had chef friends
That thumb line hahaha.
He looks like he is the brother of Dean Hall.
That’s a fuckin chef right there.
Google is saying that Rye is permanently closed? Is this true? If so, I’m sad :(. Everything looked delicious!
The rent got jacked up so they couldn't afford it anymore. Cal moved to Boise, ID and is working on getting a new place going.
i love cal.
can someone do one of these at salt lake city or park city??? some gooooood ass late night chefs.... xoxoxoxo
dudes kept it real lol he seems stressed tf out which was the baseline of every vibe working at a restaurant
If they ever do a biopic on this chef Tom Hardy should play him. Fr tho a really inspiring dude.
Cool dude
MunchieS is THE BOMB!!!
This guys a goof, respect your people
come on we need new episodes of chefs night out
*6:06** AWKWARD MOMENT OF THE NIGHT....*
That sounds like something off the Joe Rogan Podcast😬
This guy has it figured out. He doesn’t care whether or not he makes money in his business (at least in the beginning) and he makes food that he would love to eat and just experiments, that’s the recipe for the perfect comfort food
Approved.
That moment when he almost kissed the owner on accident lol
Bruh remember 2013, no mumble rap, beautiful
@Sleeze is it though? I still see a lot of cis or man or police bad kicking about. At least mumble rap seems to have died though.
Future was literally mumbling his ass of 2013
love how he and his team ate first
what is the lettuce he keeps using?
Hope this guy is doing well.
He looks like he is also in a punk rock band
goddamn I miss Chef's Night Out.....
Oldy but still a goody
most depressing episode of chefs night out
I know Rye closed, does anyone know what Cal is doing now?
Died unfortunately.
Dylan Anderson Jesus really?
Dylan Anderson sad.
Damn what happened?
He didn't die.......
This guy seems like the real deal.
I know exactly how he felt
Long hours and stress make
You hurt from the inside out.
so real ..... you know how these people care... they came to save me ..fuckin way true
You lived a tough life Cal, 9 years fishing is hard work but in Alaska ?
hands down coolest dude on munchies ever
S M A S H E D !
Now that a cooking show 🤣😂 !
Why does he looks like dragunov from tekken??
It’s 1 in the morning in Australia what am I doing
1am? You're off the rails mate
@Eric Lee not everyone is just able to go and help put out fire fighters and save animals
Eric Lee very insensitive m8
Woah there, you crazy party animal!! 1am!! Don't let the newspapers find out.
I know 1 isn’t that late I just happened to be up right when this was uploaded and I figured while not at all being creative it was still better than saying “first” like what does this have to do with the time or the state of my home country. Hows about we just enjoy the vid fellas
Trying to think of a fitting description...This guy seems happy go lucky...polar opposite of how many chefs are. What a great attitude and disposition! Anyone know what he started after his place closed?
This guy is my spirit animal
this guy seems the fukn nicest
I've never had fried Lotus or sea urchin paste but I'm pretty sure I prefer the grilled cheese hands down any day. The fried Lotus did look pretty though :-)
Why are all the venues so dark
Low-light tech wasn't great on cameras back then!
Cuz Dark lighting + booze = everyones super attractive.
It’s called ambience sweaty look it up
@@Ginacrawf Thanks beautiful. Thought it was an electricity thing.
@@jzderf This guy knows what's up
Too bad the restaurant closed its doors...
In every kitchen, pizza shop, restaurant, Italian spot, and fine dining joint, are a group of hardworking and dedicated latinos/latinas. So let's give them a shout out cuz they make the great food we all love!
Wut
What an asinine statement lol
Are they still around?
Beck Someone already mentioned that they’re closed
Probably ended up smashing the general manager
El Panteón I would raw dog her tempura
Hallo
Honestly- ill be glad to work in his restorant... 👍💪🤘
Mads Mikkelsen lookalike!
Wonder what Cal Elliott is doing nowadays?
rotusloot....
He reminds me of Mads Mikkelson
Noice
Rye is close??? 😬😬😬😬
4:33 rotus loot 😂
He probably worked hard to learn the language. Just minor pronunciation errors but we still understood right?
The egg, OMFFGGGG..............
Wtf is rotis loot?
"I'm not interested in only cooking for rich people."
...charges $16 for a meatloaf sandwich
Well thats NYC for ya
bro did you saw the size of that sandwich? c'mon now.
Things the size of NY state though......🤷🏿♂
Greg Majewski it’s NYC and good quality food $16 for a sandwich seems fair
@@jenngranados825 I'm sure it's a pretty fair price but it doesn't exactly make him champion of the poor.
underpaid workers
Is it just me or does he sound a bit like Conor McGregor?
short rib lettuce and cheese is NOT A GRILLED CHEESE FFS
Maybe the last true chef!
4:32 Rotus luut = lotus root. You're welcome fellas!
Food safety rating: O/100
Its like the Oprah Giveaway but, with diarrhea and stomach cramps.
Not a good chef easy to see why he failed and moved back to Boise to be a big fish in a little pond. Everything he does will fail. And the drugs.
